<b>Tech Drive-In:</b> "I tried upgrading the whole distro 2 times before and failed miserably. It took a heck lot of time and post installation issues were simply overwhelming."
I'm using CentOS. What I'm wondering is, what happens if I manually edit /etc/sysconfig/iptables and save it? Is that the definitive source? When I type iptables -L I get something that doesn't match the contents of that file. Is there a way I can just edit the chains directly without adding/removing rules one at a time? i.e. open VIM and get everything set up the way I want it and then save.
Along those lines, when I do something like iptables -A INPUT , where does that go in the immediate sense? Is it not applied until I do an iptables-save? I feel like I'm just missing an a-ha moment here and I can't seem to find the answer in a search.
I have never worked in the large IT-corporations, and it is very interesting for me of how much work advanced level developer has to perform during the period of, for example, a week or month.
So what is the average performanceand intensity of work of such a high class professionals expected by employers?
I understand that the question is a bit abstract and the result depends on the set of different factors in every particular case, but I think that it is possibly to do the average and rough estimation or to give an example.
Allocating memory from the system heap can be an expensive operation due to a lock used by system runtime libraries to synchronize access to the heap. Contention on this lock can limit the performance benefits from multithreading. Learn how to solve this problem.

I'm having some issues now that I can't see what I'm doing wrong. I'm Pinvoking a non WindowsAPI DLL (I mean, not a dll provided on windows). Pinvoking LoadLibrary, I can get a IntPtr to any WindowsAPI DLL, but never I can get a pointer to my DLL. The code I'm using is very simple, like this one: [DllImport("kernel32.dll", SetLastError true)] public static extern IntPtr LoadLibrary(); static void ...
<b>Phoronix:</b> "While the 2.6.35 code has not even seen its first release candidate yet, there are some massive performance drops in a variety of different tests that have yet to be corrected and nothing like we have encountered with previous kernel release cycles especially for a regression that has lived now for about one week."
As a DBA, it is vital to manage transaction log growth explicitly, rather than let SQL Server auto-growth events "manage" it for you. If you undersize the log, and then let SQL Server auto-grow it in small increments, you'll end up with a very fragmented log. This article demonstrates how this can have a significant impact on the performance of any SQL Server operations that need to read the log.
If you are considering SEO for your website, it is important you understand the landscape of the SEO. SEO do not have anyone to regulate the providers nor is there any accreditation for the SEO. This has created the issues of overpricing, scams, and reselling. To avoid becoming a victim of certain SEO, educate yourself about the different ones available as well as their proven history of other websites.
I've dabbled with PHP for a few years now and I'm capable of most of the basic things, building login forms etc but from my time on here I've noticed there's so much more I need to learn, like best practices, security issues etc and so I want to learn everything from the very basics.
In the past I've used forums and browsed the web for snippets of code only I think this has led to my bad practices, can anybody recommend books or Valid, recommended learning sources?
Thanks in advance!
Just wondering, assuming no security issues, that is, you're in total control of the command passed to exec(), is there a difference (in terms of speed or standards) between using exec() vs native PHP?
Example just to name a few use cases:
Using the DirectoryIterator vs exec(ls -1, $output), to list all files.
List 100 files from the 99th file onwards (that is, file 100 to 199)
Count total number of files in directory.
The hours and effort needed to increase the visibility of your small business website depend greatly on your marketing plan and which keyword you're going after. A year-long optimization campaign is not unheard of for a large site. If your site is less than three or four months old, or the domain is expiring in less than a year, you may have issues with high rank despite your best efforts as these are 'red flags' to the search engines.

Recently I'm reading about Puppet (and similar systems), which - as I believe - can make my work easier, a lot. But I try - and unfortunately can't - to understand what all I can "puppetize". I can imagine "clouds" or HA clusters, where is the same config on more servers. But what about workstations? I have one pc (centos with kvm), one notebook (fedora) and personal server, can (or should) it be puppetized? What are (dis)advantages? Or in our company we have hundreds of servers (mainly with centos), but each of them is a little bit different. Can't decide if it's better to have a lot of configs on one place.. (Dis)advantages? I will be happy for all your opinions or links with this topic.

<b>The H Open:</b> "Expected for release in May, Linux kernel version 2.6.34 contains several new network drivers and various advancements designed to improve network performance or increase network configuration flexibility, which will particularly impact virtualisation."
I've read that it can be dangerous for your computer to try to run Ubuntu and that the safest option is to run it on an external hard drive. Is this true?
(I don't want to run it through a Virtual Machine.) I would prefer to dual boot it, given that my hard drive has so much space.
Update: So does this mean that even if I have Ubuntu installed, that my data would still be at risk due to, say, stability issues?
<b>Longene:</b> On May 31, 2010, the Longene team realesed its crucial product, Longene 0.3. This new release has fully eliminated Wineserver, the request to wineserver now is turned to system call, so that its performance has been substantially improved.

For the average person this can be frustrating as often the reason we went to a particular web site was because we were looking for something in particular that that web site supposedly offers.
