• How do I get a Canon MF4150 printer working?

  As I am enjoying my new Ubuntu 11.10 OS (and impressed with it) I ran to some difficulty getting my Canon MF4150 printer to work. The printer seems installed properly (followed this post) however when I try to print something I get this error: printer-state-message="/usr/lib/cups/filter/pstoufr2cpca failed" I think I've come across the solution but I don't know how to apply it to my version of Ubuntu. Any ideas?

I usually don't worry about it, and I never had any loss, despite switching computers often.   I have gotten the error message "The report belongs to a package that is not installed." Generally I would just ignore that since seemingly there is no problem except I got a crash report and then I said to report the problem and then I get this. Now, how can a package or program crash that is not even installed? Sounds a little paradox, isn't it? What should I do with this? Why does this even come up?

  Following upgrade to 12.10, my usb drives - both pen drives and a usb hard drive - fail to mount with the error message: Unable to mount *name of drive* volume Adding read ACL for uid 1000 to '/media/*my home file name*' failed: Operation not supported This is on a desktop Dell Inspiron 530. I also have a Dell Inspiron Mini 10 netbook which I also upgraded to 12.10 (slightly smaller installation on a flash hard drive). all devices mount automatically without problems on this computer.

We recently changed our subdomain from www to shop but really there have been no other major changes. When I modified lighttpd's server.max-read-idle from default 60 to 5 the connection close message comes much more rapidly however it has not corrected the issue.

  Example of current file structure: example.com/foo.php example.com/bar.html example.com/directory/ example.com/directory/foo.php example.com/directory/bar.html example.com/cgi-bin/directory/foo.cgi I would like to remove HTML, PHP and CGI extensions from, and then force the trailing slash at the end of URLs. So, it could look like this: example.com/foo/ example.com/bar/ example.com/directory/ example.com/directory/foo/ example.com/directory/bar/ example.com/cgi-bin/directory/foo/ I am very frustrated because I've searched for 17 hours straight for solution and visited more than a few hundred pages on various blogs and forums. I'm not joking. So I think I've done my research. Here is the code that sits in my .htaccess file right now: RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME}\.html -f RewriteRule ^(([^/]+/)*[^./]+)/$ $1.html RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} !(\.[a-zA-Z0-9]|/)$ RewriteRule (.*)$ /$1/ [R=301,L] As you can see, this code only removes .html (and I'm not very happy with it because I think it could be done a lot simpler). I can remove the extension from PHP files when I rename them to .html through .htaccess, but that's not what I want. I want to remove it straight. This is the first thing I don't know how to do. The second thing is actually very annoying. My .htaccess file with code above, adds .html/ to every string entered after example.com/directory/foo/. So if I enter example.com/directory/foo/bar (obviously /bar doesn't exist since foo is a file), instead of just displaying message that page is not found, it converts it to example.com/directory/foo/bar.html/, then searches for a file for a few seconds and then displays the not found message. This, of course, is bad behavior. So, once again, I need the code in .htaccess to do the following things: Remove .html extension Remove .php extension Remove .cgi extension Force the trailing slash at the end of URLs Requests should behave correctly (no adding trailing slashes or extensions to strings if file or directory doesn't exist on server) Code should be as simple as possible I would very much appreciate any help. • Parallel Port Problem in 12.04

  I have a “dumb” printer attached to a parallel port in my machine which works fine under the “other” resident operating system (from Redmond) on the same machine. I recently added Ubuntu 12.04 as a dual boot on the machine, but Ubuntu doesn't seem to recognize the parallel port at all. All I need to set up a printer is a really plain-vanilla fixed pitch text-only generic driver, which is present, but no parallel ports show up. (The other printers, all on USB ports, seem to work just fine). Following what appeared to me to be the most reasonable of the many conflicting pieces of advice on the web, here's what I did: I added the following lines to /etc/modules parport_pc ppdev parport Then, after rebooting, I checked to see that the lines were still present, and they were. I then tried echo “Hello” > /dev/parport0 which didn't give me any message at all, but still didn't print anything. Running the command sudo /usr/lib/cups/backend/parallel gives the following: direct parallel:/dev/lp0 "unknown" "LPT #1" "" "" Checking the permissions for /dev/parport0, Owner, Group, and Other are all set to read and write. crw-rw---- 1 root lp 6, 0 Sep 9 16:37 /dev/lp0 crw-rw-rw- 1 root lp 99, 0 Sep 9 16:37 /dev/parport0 The output of the command lpinfo -v includes the following line: direct parallel:/dev/lp0 I've read several web postings that seem to suggest this has been a problem for several years, but the bug reports were closed because there wasn't enough information to address the issue (shades of Microsoft!). Any suggestions as to what I might be missing here?

  I recently did the update from 12.04 to 12.10 on my old Dell Latitude CPx laptop (Pentium III). When I rebooted I got this error message with no response from keyboard input. Below it is says Wait to continue, press S to skip mounting, or M for manual recovery. I also see occasional errors pop up on the screen from mountall and Plymouth. I can still get into Recovery Mode. Can anyone shed some light on the matter?

• update manager - insufficient storage space (false alarm)

• Nautilus copies files but not directories from samba server on OS X

  I need to copy files from OS X on a Mac to Ubuntu on a PC. I enabled File Sharing on the Mac and selected the samba option. I was then able to connect to the samba server in Nautilus. Copying files was no problem, but copying directories failed, with the error message "is a directory". I can accomplish what I want using samba in the terminal. But it would be more conveninient to do this in Nautilus.

• systray-whitelist changes are only temporary (how do i make them permenant?)

  I am writing a Qt C++ app. The notifications from trayIcon->showMessage(title, message) show up fine after I run the following command and logout/login: gsettings set com.canonical.Unity.Panel systray-whitelist "['all']" But after a few minutes the notifications don’t display any more and I have to repeat the gsettings logout/login. How can I get unity to play my messages without this fooling around when my user installs my app? Thanks for any help!
