  • Ubuntu - Create a link to a specified directory so I can easily change to that directory

    - by Denby
Is it possible to create a symlink to a directory, like /var/lib/tomcat6/webapps/MyWar that I can access from everywhere? I want to be able to say cd myapp from anywhere in the directory tree and go to that directory. Is it only possible in the directory where I create the symlink? Do I have to update my ~/.bashrc file to include an alias like: alias myapp="cd /var/lib/tomcat6/webapps/MyWar" and then just type myapp from anywhere? What is the best way to handle this situation so I don't always have to type in the long directory? I also want to be able to use that parameter in say a copy command, so the alias wouldn't help in that situation. Hopefully I can do something similar where ~ maps to the home directory in any command.

  • Noob proftpd questions

    - by Camran
I have setup my VPS pretty much now, and want to upload some basic files to the server. How is this done in Ubuntu 9.10? I have PuTTY and use the terminal there... Is there any ftp program, like in regular managed hostings, to just upload files with? I was thinking about proftpd, but don't have a clue how to get it to work. I am using my home-laptop with windows xp to command the VPS. Thanks

  • How to reverse-i-search back and forth?

    - by m-ric
I use reverse-i-search often, and that's cool. Sometime though when pressing Ctrl+r multiple times, I pass the command I am actually looking for. Because Ctrl+r searches backward in history, from newest to oldest, I have to: cancel, search again and stop exactly at the command, without passing it. While in reverse-i-search prompt, is it possible to search forward, i.e. from where I stand to newest. I naively tried Ctrl+shift+r, no luck. I heard about Ctrl+g but this is not what I am expecting here. Anyone has an idea?

  • Simple NNTP clent for Ubuntu

    - by Alexander Gladysh
I need to download a particular NNTP group. I do not need to setup any crons, put group contents in /opt and other stuff. Just run <fetch-nntp> <server> <group-name> <output-dir> and be done with it without putting a lot of garbage in the system. If that <fetch-nntp> would not fetch the same messages on the second run — fine. But I can live without it. All NNTP clients that I've looked at are trying to be a NNTP server as well. Is there something simpler that is suitable for my needs?

  • How to secure Firefox traffic (+DNS) through SOCKS proxy under Ubuntu 10.04?

    - by Maarx
I'm using Ubuntu 10.04, and starting a SOCKS proxy with 'ssh -D', and setting Ubuntu to use it with "System - Preferences - Network Proxy". Firefox uses the proxy, and the proxy's IP appears when I visit a site like http://www.whatismyip.com/. My question is, is Firefox resolving DNS requests through this proxy? Is my web-browsing truly secure? (That is, until I exit the other end of the proxy. I know it's insecure after that.) (And I've verified the keys, I'm not being man-in-the-middled) (And--screw it. You know what I mean. Is it resolving DNS requests through the proxy?) I don't know how I would go about verifying such a thing for myself. Using additional hardware such as another debugging proxy is not an option. If Firefox isn't resolving my DNS requests through the SOCKS proxy, how do I go about fixing it?

  • Epson Artisan 800 on Ubuntu/Linux

    - by Tim Lytle
Update for Ubuntu 10.04: Printing should work 'out-of-box', scanning still needs the newer sane backend. Looking for a known good way to setup an Epson Artisan 800 on Ubuntu specifically or any linux box in general. It is a printer/scanner with ethernet/wifi/usb. I'd like to use it as a network printer/scanner being able to do both from my Windows and Ubuntu machines; however, if it needs to be physically connected to a computer (preferably the Ubuntu machine) that is doable (again, then sharing print/scan functions to the network). Basically, I'm looking for someone who has used this printer/scanner (or similar) in a multi-platform environment to share how the set it up and how well it worked. Updated: A little more information, like most printers (I expect) the documentation for the printer basically says, "don't use plug-n-play, run our setup CD from your Windows/Mac system", to do anything (set it up for network use even). I guess that's to make it easy for anyone else to setup, but when you're looking to use it with an unsupported (by Epson's documentation) OS, you're just stuck on your own. What I was hoping for was someone who could say, "Forget the bundled software, do [this] to set it up on wifi manually, install [this] to connect to the scanner from [os], printing works with [this] driver - at least that's how I set it up." I'll will (and have so far) use the information here, and post my own setup when I'm done, if there's no one else out there with that experience.

  • Using find and tar with files with special characters in the name

I want to archive all .ctl files in a folder, recursively. tar -cf ctlfiles.tar `find /home/db -name "*.ctl" -print` The error message : tar: Removing leading `/' from member names tar: /home/db/dunn/j: Cannot stat: No such file or directory tar: 74.ctl: Cannot stat: No such file or directory I have these files: /home/db/dunn/j 74.ctl and j 75. Notice the extra space. What if the files have other special characters? How do I archive these files recursively?

  • How to query a DHCP server to get the local DNS serves

    - by Dan Berlyoung
I have a ClarkConnect (CentOS based) box running as my home router on a RR connection. I had the DNS servers set up to use Google's DNS server. I want to change them back to the local DNS servers but I can't find an obvious/easy way to get those address short of a)reconfiguring the router's network to DHCP them (would rather not interrupt everyone) or b)calling their T/S (kill me now!). Is there a command line tool/command I can use to query the DHCP server on the external NIC to see what DNS servers it would set me up with w/o munging my existing setup?

  • Convert KVM virtual machine to LXC container

    - by linkdd
I have 2 virtual machines (with Debian, using KVM) with virtual hard drives: /srv/kvm/ssh.img /srv/kvm/www.img Both have 3 partitions (/, /home, swap). I want to convert them in a RootFS usable with LXC (in order to use LXC instead of KVM). The only solution I have for the moment is: create a new RootFS copy /home partition into it reproduce the same configuration into it But is there an automated way to do it

  • openSSL tutorial not fully working - Can sign but cannot restore original file

    - by djechelon
I'm writing, and testing, a little tutorial for my groupmates involved in an openSSL homework. We have a bunch of PDF files, I'm the CA and each one should send me a signed PDF for me to be verified. I've told them to do the following (and tried to do it by myself) Request and obtain a certificate (I'll skip this part) Create a MIME message with the PDF file in it makemime -c "text/pdf" -a "Content-Disposition: attachment; filename=”Elaborato.pdf" Elaborato.pdf > Elaborato.pdf.msg Sign with openSSL openssl smime -sign -in Elaborato.pdf.msg -out Elaborato.pdf.p7m -certfile ca.pem -certfile nomegruppo.crt -inkey nomegruppo.key -signer nomegruppo.crt Verify with openssl smime -verify -in Elaborato.pdf.p7m -out Elaborato-verified.msg -CAfile ca.pem -signer nomegruppo.crt Extract attachment with munpack Elaborato-verified.msg View with Acrobat Reader The problem is that even if I get a file that (from its binary content) resembles a PDF file my current Ubuntu PDF viewer doesn't read it. The XXXElaborato.pdf extracted by munpack is a little bit smaller than the original. What's the problem with this procedure? In theory, they should send me the signed S/MIME message and I should be able to read the PDF within it. Why can't I restore the original content of the PDF file?

  • DVD ROM is not working

    - by Cyril N.
(note: I don't know in which StackExchange site to put this question, I'll thank the moderator that will move it to a more appropriate place, if there is a S.E. available for my question). I have a DVD RW drive that is well listed in the bios, and if no CD is in, it is also present in the "My Computer" of my Fedora 16. But when I put a disc on it, the icon disapear from "My Computer", and I can not do anything with this ! (Like erasing a RW disc). I'd like to boot a Fedora 17 Live CD image. • Wireless disconnects at random after upgrade to Ubuntu 10.4

    - by Daniel Elessedil Kjeserud
After upgrading my home server from Ubuntu 8.10 to 10.4 my wireless seemingly drops out, even though my IRC client keeps it's connection to the servers, so it looks like the machine just stops taking wireless requests. A ping will give a me this Request timeout for icmp_seq 27 ping: sendto: Host is down After a while the machine just starts responding again, without any interaction from me. • Empty /var/log after running cron bash script

    - by Ortix92
I wrote a little bash script and all of a sudden my /var/log folder is completely empty except for the log I created for the bash script. This is the script I'm running every hour with cron: #!/bin/bash STL_DIR=/path/to/some/folder/i/hid LOGFILE=/var/log/stl_upload.log now=`date` echo "----------Start of Transmission----------" 2>&1 | tee -a $LOGFILE echo "Starting transfer at $now" 2>&1 | tee -a $LOGFILE rsync -av -e ssh $STL_DIR [email protected]:/users/path/folder 2>&1 | tee -a $LOGFILE echo "----------End of transmission----------" 2>&1 | tee -a $LOGFILE printf "\n" 2>&1 | tee -a $LOGFILE I want to be clear that I'm not 100% certain this is related to the empty logs folder. So if anyone could give me a pointer as to what could be going on about the reason why my log folder is empty, that'd be great.

  • What's wrong with my custom .desktop xsession?

    - by Noam Gagliardi
I want to create a custom Xmonad session that loads an .xsession script in my home folder. This is the original file I copied. This one works: [Desktop Entry] Encoding=UTF-8 Name=XMonad Comment=Lightweight tiling window manager Exec=xmonad Icon=xmonad.png Type=XSession This is my modified file, xmonad-custom.desktop. When I logout, then login choosing this "xmonad-custom", the screen just flashes and sends me back to the ubuntu login screen (as if it briefly logs in and out of the session): [Desktop Entry] Encoding=UTF-8 Name=XMonad Custom Comment=Lightweight tiling window manager Exec=/home/{username}/.xsession Icon=xmonad.png Type=XSession X-Ubuntu-Gettext-Domain=gdm I also tried without the last line. This is my ~/.xsession file, in case there's an error with this script: #!/bin/env bash xrdb -merge .Xresources trayer --edge top --align right --SetDockType true --SetPartialStrut \ true --expand true --width 15 --height 12 --transparent true --tint 0x000000 & dropbox start & exec xmonad

  • adress-chunk: separate data stored in one collumn - into three (street, postal-code, town)

    - by zero
hello dear community. Hello dear friends form all over the planet first of all - this is a great great forum. I like this place to share the ideas. It is so great to see such a supportive place - featuring the knowledge exchange! today i have the following thing to discuss: i want to separate the following data that are stored in one column of a calc-spreadsheet: See the following data: You see that there are the following categories:_ steet, postal-code, town All the data are stored in only one Colum; Well to be honest: i want to separate them into three colums steet, postal-code, town see the data: what can i do? note - you see that there are commas inbetween the enties: and besides this we see that we have a postal-code with four digits: that is a good thing. Perhaps we can use this as a marker that helps us to separate the data?! Perhaps See a data-sample! Here you can see some exceptions: eg. the town that has two words combinde with a "-" ... or somethims without any signs and characters... see the following... as an example: Max-Bader-Platz 1, 5620 Schwarzach im Pongau Pestalozzistraße 4, 9990 Nussdorf-Debant Schulstraße 4, 5162 Obertrum am See But i guess that this means no problem... • Log rotation with automatic *.log file discovery

Does any existing tools offer this kind of log file discovery and rotation capabilities, without manually specifying each file? If not... then just write a shell script which generates the logrotate conf?
