• Can documents indexed with Solr on JDK6 be retrieved using only lucene api on JDK1.4?

  My runtime environment is still on JDK1.4 but I like the Solr features related to how documents are ingested and indexed. Would I be able to index my documents using Solr offline on a recent version of the JDK, copy the index over and use it in my runtime environment with an older version of the JDK? Version wise, Solr 1.4.0 uses Apache Lucene 2.9.1 which is JDK1.4 compatible. (but Solr itself requires JDK5). Assuming what I'm trying to do is even possible, what features would I lose if I search Solr indices only with the Lucene API?

• How should I move my code from dev to production?

  I have created a PHP web-application. I have 3 environments: DEV, TEST, PROD. What's a good tool / business practice for me to move my PHP web-application code from DEV to TEST to the PROD environment? Realizing that my TEST environment still only connects to my TEST database; whereas, I need to PROD environment to connect to my PROD database. So the code is mostly the same, except that I need to change my TEST code once moved into PROD to connect to the PROD database and not TEST database. I've heard of people taking down Apache in such away that it doesn't allow new connections and once all the existing connections are idle it simply brings down the web server. Then people manually copy the code and then manually update the config files of the PHP application to also point to the PROD instance. That seems terribly dangerous. Does a best practice exists?

• Trouble using genericra to integrate activemq and glassfish when using failover protocol

  Hi, I'm attempting to use activemq in glassfish using the genericra resource adapter provided with glassfish 2.1. I have found a few pages with helpful information including http://activemq.apache.org/sjsas-with-genericjmsra.html. I have actually had success and been able to get MDBs to use activemq as their JMS provider, but I'm running into an issue as I'm trying to do some more complicated configuration. I want to set up a master-slave configuration, which would require my clients to use a brokerURL of failover:(tcp://broker1:61616,tcp://broker2:61616). In order to do this, I set the following property when calling asadmin create-resource-adapter-config (I have to escape '=' and ':'): ConnectionFactoryProperties=brokerURL\=failover\:(tcp\://127.0.0.1\:61616,tcp://127.0.0.1\:61617) However, I am now getting a StringIndexOutOfBoundsException when my application starts up. I suspect the comma in between the two URLs is the culprit, since this works fine: brokerURL\=failover\:(tcp\://127.0.0.1\:61616) Just wondering if anyone has dealt with this issue before. Also wondering if there is a better way to integrate with glassfish than using the generic resource adapter.

• How do I push a new project to a shared Mercurial multi-repository?

  I have a local machine ("laptop") and a shared Mercurial repository on another machine ("server"). The shared repository is set up as a multi-repository as described in the Mercurial documentation using Apache, the hgwebdir.cgi script and Mercurial 1.4. The setup works in the sense that I can browse the projects (repositories) in the web browser, I can clone and pull from the server, and I can push from the laptop when the project/repository already exists on the server. But I cannot create a new project on the laptop (hg init, do stuff, hg commit) and push it to the shared multi-repository (hg push http://server/hg/my-new-project-name) - I get "abort: HTTP Error 404: Not Found", presumably because the directory/project repository does not exist yet. How can I push a new project/directory structure to a Mercurial running elsewhere? I couldn't find anything in the documentation, how do you guys do it?

  I am running a JSP/Servlet Web application and out of nowhere we experienced some random problems that don't make any sense. I checked the catalina.out file to check the log files, and I noticed it contained some of the following messages SEVERE: Error starting static Resources java.lang.IllegalArgumentException: Invalid or unreadable WAR file : error in opening zip file INFO: validateJarFile(/home/weremo/appservers/ apache-tomcat-6.0.26/webapps /WMA/WEB-INF/lib/ servlet-api.jar) - jar not loaded. See Servlet Spec 2.3, section 9.7.2. Offending class: javax/servlet/Servlet.class I am aware of what this message means, but am in the dark as to what could have caused it, or what effects it could have on the application.

• PHP File Serving Script: Unreliable Downloads?

  This post started as a question on ServerFault ( http://serverfault.com/questions/131156/user-receiving-partial-downloads ) but I determined that our php script was the culprit. So I'm issuing an updated question here about what I believe is the actual issue. I am using a php script to verify permissions and then serve up a file for users of my website to download. Most of the time, this works, but recently one user has been seeing problems with larger downloads. He is only getting ~80% of downloads for files that are 100MB in size. Also, all downloads from this script fail to report a filesize. Further, tests revealed that the same user COULD reliably download each of the failed files if given a direct link (at which point the filesize is reported). Here's the relevant snippet of code that we are using to serve the file: header("Content-type:$contenttype"); $len = filesize($filename); header("Content-Length: $len"); header("Content-Disposition: attachment; filename=".$title.".".$ext); readfile($filename); Note that $contenttype, $filename, $title, and $ext are all set correctly before we get here. These have been triple-checked. None of them are the problem. Also, $len does provide the correct filesize. While researching this issue, I came across this post: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1334471/content-length-header-always-zero It seems that I am encountering the same issue. When I use the script, I get chunked encoding on the file and no size is set for content-length. I'm hypothesizing that something is going wrong on the large downloads, leading him to get a zero-length chunk before the end of the file.   I followed the Maven tutorial to the letter but I still can't get Maven installed. When I run the following in command prompt: E:\Documents and Settings\zach>mvn --version I get: 'mvn' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file. I navigated to the maven install folder and ran mvn --version and got: E:\java resources\apache-maven-2.2.0\bin>mvn --version ERROR: JAVA_HOME is set to an invalid directory. JAVA_HOME = "E:\Sun\SDK\jdk\bin" Please set the JAVA_HOME variable in your environment to match the location of your Java installation but when I run java -version I get: java version "1.6.0_14" Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_14-b08) Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 14.0-b16, mixed mode) So I do have Java installed. Anyone know what the problem is?

• Switching to a VPS

  Well, I know absolutely nothing about the subject, so I really need help. I currently have a website running on google app-engine (Java) and I can't get it to what I want because of app engine's limitations (no full text search mainly). The traffic is low, never reached 15% of the free quota (around 1500 daily pageviews). I also have 3 sites in drupal hosted in a shared hosting service, and this is giving me problems, because the server speed is awful. The sites are VERY low trafic, but load times are bad, and I might need to add more sites for some clients, so this will only get worse. So, i'm planning to move all that to VPS. The question is, can I have 2 http servers running in the same VPS? because I will need Apache-php-drupal server and a java server (tomcat?). I have really no idea on this, so any tip will be very helpful to me. Thanks!

• Prevent Django from redirecting to add trailing slash

  UPDATED: Sorry, it looks like it's Apache that's rewriting it for some reason, not Django. I'll investigate further and post my findings. I need to add a /xmlrpc.php to my Byteflow installation to handle an application that is written for PHP blog engines and uses this hardcoded path. For some reason Byteflow appends a slash to this URL using a 301 Moved Permanently redirect, which breaks the application. It does not do so for the /robots.txt that is configured in a similar way. Relevant lines from the project urls.py: url(r'^xmlrpc.php$', 'django_xmlrpc.views.xmlrpc_handler'), url(r'^robots.txt$', include('robots.urls')), I read that the behavior was changed in the Django codebase in commit 6852 (in 2007) to prevent redirects being done for urls that have been explicitly configured not to contain any trailing slashes. I'm using Django 1.1. I assume that once I have fixed this problem, I should be able to use this application with Byteflow, because the application uses the MetaWeblog XML-RPC API. Any clue?

  There is a GPL'd program that has some nice icons I would like to use in a project of my own. I would like to release my project under a more liberal license like Apache or BSD. After reading the GPL V3 license (a few times), I can't figure out how it applies to resources like icons. Can I use them at all? If so, must I release my new project under GPL instead of some other license? Of course, I plan to contact the original author and ask them what they had in mind and honor that intent. But what are the legal requirements for use of graphical resources from GPL'd software?

  We use Tomcat to host our WAR based applications. We are servlet container compliant J2EE applications with the exception of org.apache.catalina.authenticator.SingleSignOn. We are being asked to move to a commercial J2EE application server. The first downside to changing that I see is the cost. No matter what the charges for the application server, Tomcat is free. Second is the complexity. We don't use either EJB nor EAR features (of course not, we can't), and have not missed them. What then are the benefits I'm not seeing? What are the drawbacks that I haven't mentioned? Mentioned were... JTA - Java Transaction API - We control transaction via database stored procedures. JPA - Java Persistence API - We use JDBC and again stored procedures to persist. JMS - Java Message Service - We use XML over HTTP for messaging. This is good, please more!

  Hi, sorry for my english, I speak spanish. I recently migrate an application from ejb 2.x to ejb3 (approx. 300 entities), Im using WebSphere 7.0.0.9. After 10 hours of work, the system crash with an OutOfMemoryError. Analyzing the coredump, I see a lot of instance of the org.apache.openjpa.jdbc.meta.ClassMapping class (please see the attached a screenshot). I believe that the culprit is the list of ValueListeners of the Value class, but I'm not sure, and I dont know how to fix this problem. Thanks

• Is it actually possible to connect to ActiveMQ via XMPP and query/browse queues using "AciveMQ.Agen

  I tried what I think are 4 most popular XMPP (aka "Jabber") clients (Spark, Pidgin, Psi, Pandion) to connect to ActiveMQ instance (Apache ActiveMQ ver. 5.3.0) on XMMP connector with an idea to use the "AciveMQ.Agent chatroom" for querying queues/etc and no success at all Some of them fail with 'Unknown error', some don't fail but kind of "hang"... interestingly, some communication does indeed reach the ActiveMQ side, because when I close a client it spits an exception "could not close" or something to that effect... and if I try "register new user" option (present on most clients" the ActiveMQ also spits some most cryptic warning message But I was never able to get to the point when I could see or specify "ActiveMQ.Agent" as chatroom and issue any commands... Before I waste any more time on this curious feature, I would like to hear whether anyone had any success with it? Thank you! PS: BTW, the book "ActiveMQ in Action book" http://www.manning.com/snyder/ shows that it is apparently works and is very easy using some Mac client (AdiumX), but I wanted it on a Windows PC ;)

• How to search SVN repository for a file when I'm not sure where I put it?

  Co-worker is sure he checked in a file: foo_oustanding.dpr but isn't sure when/where (we have lots of "tools" and "utility" ancillary branches, lots of project branches, etc.. I need a way to search the entire repository for this file. I could check the whole source tree out to my HD, but that would take several hours. Is there a faster way? I tried the Repo Browser (Tortoise) and it didn't seem to have a search. I also thought about dumping the log, from the beginning of time. But that seemed silly. I have, at my disposal: Tortoise SVN 1.6 Subversion 1.5.6 running on Apache It runs on a Windows 2003 server. Remote Desktop access to the server, with admin rights. Thanks for any ideas.

  Apache webserver setup added: AddType application/x-mpegURL .m3u8 AddType video/MP2T .ts to "httpd.conf" file. Movie file preparation I have 3 movie files (9mb - 25mb each). Used QuickTime to convert movies into iPhone format. Used mediafilesegmenter to convert .m4v into 10-second segments of .ts files, with an accompanying .m3u8 file. Placed these in a folder on webserver. iPhone App implementation Created UIWebView whose URL points to http://71.191.59.68/~yujean/stream.html Simulator accesses the site and streams the movie-files just fine. Question Will I still get rejected by apple for bandwidth issues over the 3G and/or Edge network? Do I need to somehow check which network the end-user is on first? I have placed the following bit of configuration code in my Django project's settings.py file: import logging import logging.handlers import os date_fmt = '%m/%d/%Y %H:%M:%S' log_formatter = logging.Formatter(u'[%(asctime)s] %(levelname)-7s: %(message)s (%(filename)s:%(lineno)d)', datefmt=date_fmt) log_dir = os.path.join(PROJECT_DIR, "var", "log", "my_app") log_name = os.path.join(log_dir, "nyrb.log") bytes = 1024 * 1024 # 1 MB if not os.path.exists(log_dir): os.makedirs(log_dir) handler = logging.handlers.RotatingFileHandler(log_name, maxBytes=bytes, backupCount=7) handler.setFormatter(log_formatter) handler.setLevel(logging.DEBUG) logging.getLogger().setLevel(logging.DEBUG) logging.getLogger().addHandler(handler) logging.getLogger(__name__).info("Initialized logging subsystem") At startup, I get a couple Django-related messages, as well as the "Initialized logging subsystem", in the log files, but then all the log messages end up going to the web server logs (/var/log/apache2/error.log, since I'm using Apache), and use the standard log format (not the formatter I designated). Am I configuring logging incorrectly?
