  • Port a Rails App from Windows to Mac or Linux

    - by Ryan Max
Hello I've been a Rails developer on Windows for quite some time now, but I recently completed my biggest project yet (it's quite extensive, took me over a year to build) but I am having trouble deploying it. The combination of it's size, complexity and a windows environment is making it needlessly complex to deploy. I am thinking about getting an old mac mini and using it just for rails development. Either that or install unix on another box. Is there any way I can port my app to this mac or linux machine, without having to start over? I can't find any resources on the internets about this.

  • Rails Rspec testing not saving a transactional model

    - by NolanDC
I'm currently testing my Rails controllers using RSpec. In one controller, I have a model that uses transactions, so that it will not be saved unless another nested model (whose data is filled in using fields_for) is also saved correctly. The tests hit a snag when they reach the transaction. Some debugging output proves that the model is valid and ready to save. However, upon entering the transaction block, the model does not save. Even stranger, the code never reaches the else clause of "if model.save" (It does, however, enter the transaction block). I can only assume this is a problem with my testing a transactional model. Any ideas/hints/solutions?

  • Authlogic: passwords saved in the DB are not working as expected.

    - by user570459
Hello everyone, Im having trouble with authlogic on my production server. Im able to update passwords in the database but when i try to validate a user using the new password, the validation fails. Please check the below console output. Notice how the salt and crypted_password fields get update before and after the new password is saved. The issue is only on my production server (running passenger). Everything works fine on my development machine. => #<User id: 3, login: "saravk", email: "[email protected]", crypted_password: "9bc86247105e940bb748ab680c0e77d9c44a82ea", salt: "WdVpQIdwl68k8lJWOU"> irb(main):003:0> u.password = "kettik123" => "kettik123" irb(main):004:0> u.password_confirmation = "kettik123" => "kettik123" irb(main):005:0> u.save! => true irb(main):006:0> u.valid_password?("kettik123") => true irb(main):007:0> u.reload => #<User id: 3, login: "saravk", email: "[email protected]", crypted_password: "f059007c56f498a12c63209c849c1e65bb151174", salt: "lVmmczhyGE0gxsbV421A"> irb(main):008:0> u.valid_password?("kettik123") => false The authlogic configuration in my User model.. class User < ActiveRecord::Base acts_as_authentic do |c| c.login_field :email c.validate_login_field false c.validate_email_field false c.perishable_token_valid_for = 1.day c.disable_perishable_token_maintenance = true end I use the email field as the main key for the user. Also the email field is allowed to be blank in some cases (eg a facebook user) Also i belive that my schema is proper (in terms of the length of the salt & crypted password fields) create_table "users", :force => true do |t| t.string "login" t.string "email" t.string "crypted_password", :limit => 128, :default => "" t.string "salt", Any help on this would be highly appreciated. Thanks.

Relationship as follows: has_many :album_photos, :dependent => :destroy i upload photos to S3 When the user delete album I want to delete all photos as the relationship shows but it takes time if the user has many photos. Can I automatically set photo deletion to happen in the background (delayed_job) without having to manually call 'send_later' on every photo?

  • What is this Hash-like/Tree-like Construct Called?

    - by viatropos
I want to create a "Config" class that acts somewhere between a hash and a tree. It's just for storing global values, which can have a context. Here's how I use it: Config.get("root.parent.child_b") #=> "value" Here's what the class might look like: class Construct def get(path) # split path by "." # search tree for nodes end def set(key, value) # split path by "." # create tree node if necessary # set tree value end def tree { :root => { :parent => { :child_a => "value", :child_b => "another value" }, :another_parent => { :something => { :nesting => "goes on and on" } } } } end end Is there a name for this kind of thing, somewhere between Hash and Tree (not a Computer Science major)? Basically a hash-like interface to a tree.

  • Rails controller not rendering correct view when form is force-submitted by Javascript

    - by whazzmaster
I'm using Rails with jQuery, and I'm working on a page for a simple site that prints each record to a table. The only editable field for each record is a checkbox. My goal is that every time a checkbox is changed, an ajax request updates that boolean attribute for the record (i.e., no submit button). My view code: <td> <% form_remote_tag :url => admin_update_path, :html => { :id => "form#{lead.id}" } do %> <%= hidden_field :lead, :id, :value => lead.id %> <%= check_box :lead, :contacted, :id => "checkbox"+lead.id.to_s, :checked => lead.contacted, :onchange => "$('#form#{lead.id}').submit();" %> <% end %> </td> In my routes.rb, admin_update_path is defined by map.admin_update 'update', :controller => "admin", :action => "update", :method => :post I also have an RJS template to render back an update. The contents of this file is currently just for testing (I just wanted to see if it worked, this will not be the ultimate functionality on a successful save)... page << "$('#checkbox#{@lead.id}').hide();" When clicked, the ajax request is successfully sent, with the correct params, and the action on the controller can retrieve the record and update it just fine. The problem is that it doesn't send back the JS; it changes the page in the browser and renders the generated Javascript as plain text rather than executing it in-place. Rails does some behind-the-scenes stuff to figure out if the incoming request is an ajax call, and I can't figure out why it's interpreting the incoming request as a regular web request as opposed to an ajax request. I may be missing something extremely simple here, but I've kind-of burned myself out looking so I thought I'd ask for another pair of eyes. Thanks in advance for any info!

  • Problem in mutiple :dependent=> :destroy when multiple polymorphic is true

    - by piemesons
I have four models question, answer, comment and vote.Consider it same as stackoverflow. Question has_many comments Answers has_many comments Questions has_many votes answers has_many votes comments has_many votes Here are the models (only relevant things) class Comment < ActiveRecord::Base belongs_to :commentable, :polymorphic => true has_many :votes, :as => :votable, :dependent => :destroy end class Question < ActiveRecord::Base has_many :comments, :as => :commentable, :dependent => :destroy has_many :answers, :dependent => :destroy has_many :votes, :as => :votable, :dependent => :destroy end class Vote < ActiveRecord::Base belongs_to :votable, :polymorphic => true end class Answer < ActiveRecord::Base belongs_to :question, :counter_cache => true has_many :comments, :as => :commentable , :dependent => :destroy end Now the problem is whenever i am trying to delete any question/answer/comment its giving me an error NoMethodError in QuestionsController#destroy undefined method `each' for 0:Fixnum if i remove this line from any of the model (question/answer/comment) has_many :votes, :as => :votable, :dependent => :destroy then it works perfectly. It seems there is a problem while deleting the records active record is not able to find out the proper path because of multiple joins within the tables.

  • How can I get all the checked items from a submitted form with sinatra's params?

    - by 102405176597896213397
I'm running Sinatra 1.0 with HAML, my form has a number of checkboxes, for example books I like, and you would select all the books you want. The checkbox name is "books". In sinatra params['books'] there should be an array of all the books that were checked, but it only has the last item that was checked, not an array. How can I get all the checked items? HAML: %form{:action => "/test", :method => 'post'} %input{:name=>'check',:type=>'checkbox',:value=>'item1'} item 1 %input{:name=>'check',:type=>'checkbox',:value=>'item2'} item 2 %input{:name=>'check',:type=>'checkbox',:value=>'item3'} item 3 %input{:type => "submit", :value => "send", :class => "button"} Sinatra get method post '/test' do puts params['check'] #should be an array but is last item checked end

  • How do I form a Rails link_to with custom field value as parameter

    - by rwheadon
I have an invoice form where I'm giving the user opportunity to apply coupons to the invoice total. These coupons are held in another Model and I am going to do a lookup on the Coupon code (something like "20OFFONFRIDAY") which I will use to find what the restrictions and benefits of the coupon. (and to see if it even exists at all) The invoice does not have "coupon_code" on it so I hand forged the field onto my form with html: <% if (@invoice.status == 'new') %> <input id="coupon_code" name="coupon_code" type="text"/> <% end %> and I am calling a controller method with link_to and would like something like the following jquery enhanced link_to to work: <%= link_to "Apply Coupon", { :controller=>"invoices", :id=>@invoice.id, :coupon_code=>$('.coupon_code').val(), :action=>"apply_coupon_code" }, :method=>"post" %> ^formatted for easier reading Then inside my "apply_coupon_code" method I will go off to a couple other models and perform business logic before returning the updated invoice page. ...but maybe it's a pipe dream. I guess if push came to shove I could add the "coupon_code" field to my invoice model (even though it's persisted elsewhere.) so it's part of the entity and thus easily available on my form to send back into a controller, but I just hate adding a column to make a coupon validation easier. I figured I'd ping stackoverflow before taking that path.

  • Nested Resource - How to pass needed keys, and attribute to update?

    - by Jason B
My nested resources are working for form_for updates, but I have a few toggles that I need to setup to change a status field. So I am using link_to, and accessing the url helper. link_to "toggle", edit_project_expense_path(@project[:id],expense_item[:id]) routes.rb resources :projects do resources :expenses end match '/submit_expense/:id' => 'expenses#submit_expense', :as => 'submit_expense' rake routes edit_project_expense GET /projects/:project_id/expenses/:id/edit(.:format) expenses#edit My question is: How can I also send along :approval_status = "1", with my link_to?

  • Rails 3 namespacing requires model to be defined twice?

    - by RSG
I'm pulling my hair out trying to understand namespacing in Rails 3. I've tried following a few different tutorials, and the only way I can get my models to work is if I define my model in both the base directory and my namespace directory. If I only define the model in the namespace directory it expects it to define both Model and Namespace::Model, as below: LoadError (Expected .../app/models/plugins/chat.rb to define Chat): or LoadError (Expected .../app/models/plugins/chat.rb to define Plugins::Chat): I'm sure I'm missing something obvious, but I could really use a pointer in the right direction. Here are the relevant excerpts. /models/plugins/chat.rb class Plugins::Chat include ActiveModel::Validations include ActiveModel::Conversion extend ActiveModel::Naming ... end /controllers/plugins/chats_controller.rb class Plugins::ChatsController < Plugins::ApplicationController load_and_authorize_resource ... end /config/routes.rb namespace :plugins do resources :chats end /config/application.rb config.autoload_paths += Dir["#{config.root}/app/models/**/"]

  • Rails: Best practice to store user settings?

    - by ole_berlin
Hi, I'm wondering what the best way is to store user settings? For a web 2.0 app I want users to be able to select certain settings. At the moment is it only when to receive email notifications. The easiest way would be to just create a Model "Settings" and have a column for every setting and then have a 1-1 relationship with users. But is there a pattern to solve this better? Is it maybe better to store the info in the user table itself? Or should I use a table with "settings_name" and "settings_value" to be completely open about the type of settings stored there (without having to run any migrations when adding options)? What is your opinion? Thanks

  • How to allow devise users to edit their profil?

    - by user1704926
    I have a namespace called "backend" which is protected by Devise. I would like now to allow users to edit their profil. So I created a users_controller in Backend. Here's the users_controllercode : class Backend::UsersController < ApplicationController layout 'admin' before_filter :authenticate_user! def index @users = Backend::User.all respond_to do |format| format.html # index.html.erb format.json { render json: @users } end end def show @user = Backend::User.find(params[:id]) respond_to do |format| format.html # show.html.erb format.json { render json: @user } end end def edit @user = Backend::User.find(params[:id]) end def update @user = Backend::User.find(params[:id]) respond_to do |format| if @user.update_attributes(params[:user]) format.html { redirect_to @user, notice: 'Article was successfully updated.' } format.json { head :no_content } else format.html { render action: "edit" } format.json { render json: @user.errors, status: :unprocessable_entity } end end end end When I go on backend_users_path there is a list of all the users. I would like to permit to edit only his own profil. So I go on the Edit page : <%= link_to "Edit", edit_backend_user_path(backend_user.id) %> . Here's the Edit page code : <%= simple_form_for @user do |f| %> <div><%= f.label :email %><br /> <%= f.input :email, :autofocus => true %></div> <div><%= f.submit "Update" %></div> <% end %> And there is my problem : when I try to modify the email address, nothing happen. The update fails. How can I do this ? I'm quite lost. Thanks by advance.

  • how do I block my rails app from being hit by bots?

    - by codeman73
I'm not even sure I'm using the right terminology, whether this is actually bots or not. I didn't want to use the word 'spam' because it's not like I have comments or posts that are being created/spammed. It looks more like something is making the same repeated request to my domain, which is what made me think it was some kind of bot. I've opened my first rails app to the 'public', which is a really a small group of users, <50 currently. That was last Friday. I started having performance issues today, so I looked at the log and I see tons of these RoutingErrors ActionController::RoutingError (No route matches "/portalApp/APF/pages/business/util/whichServer.jsp" with {:method=>:get}): They are filling up the log and I'm assuming this is causing the slowdown. Note the .jsp on the end and this is a rails app, so I've got no urls remotely like this in my app. I mean, the /portalApp I don't even have, so I don't know where this is coming from. This is hosted at Dreamhost and I chatted with one of their support people, and he suggested a couple sites that detail using htaccess to block things. But that looks like you need to know the IP or domain that the requests are coming from, which I don't. How can I block this? How can I find the IP or domain from the request? Any other suggestions?

  • SEO Friendly URLs where the phrase used may change in Rails

    - by Newy
Say I have http://www.mysite.com/I-Like-Cheeseburgers and I want that to point to Item with id 3. Sometime later, I change the name of the item, and now its http://www.mysite.com/I-Like-Hamburgers (and perhaps many more times). I want all these URLs to remain pointing to Item 3. Is it efficient to simply keep a table of [strings,item_ids] and do a lookup on this? Is there a better way?

  • Watir question regarding select_list and reloading

    - by AJ
I have a drop down with multiple options. Whenever you choose an option, the page reloads with data specific with that option. Currently I'm using select.list(:name, strg).set(value) and it does that part just fine, but it does not reload the page with the specific data. Anyone know how to help. When i watch it in action, it doesn't select the option either, but my logs show that it does.Thanks.

  • How can I display a list of three different Models sortable by the same :attribute in rails?

    - by Angela
I have a Campaign model which has_many Calls, Emails, and Letters. For now, these are each a separate Model with different controllers and actions (although I would like to start to think of ways to collapse them once the models and actions stabilize). They do share two attributes at least: :days and :title I would like a way to represent all the Calls, Emails, and Letters that belong_to a specific Campaign as a sortable collection (sortable by :days), in a way that outputs the model name and the path_to() for each. For example (I know the below is not correct, but it represents the kind of output/format I've been trying to do: @campaign_events.each do |campaign_event| <%= campaign_event.model_name %> <%= link_to campaign_event.title, #{model_name}_path(campaign_event) %> end Thanks so much. BTW, if this matters, I would then want to make the :days attribute editable_in_place.

  • Background processing in Rails

    - by Shreyas Satish
A certain function in my controller takes a lot of time to process (heavy db work) . So when my user clicks on "submit" on the form he has to wait for the process to complete which is quite long. Is there any way that on "submitting", the user is redirected to the next view without any delay while the processing continues in the back-end without making the user wait ? Thanks & Cheers !
