• Cloud service and IM protocol advice, for a backend to group chat mobile app

  Overview I’m going to develop an app on Android and iOS. It will allow users to set up group ‘chat rooms’ and talk on chat rooms set up by other users. The service needs to be highly scalable, such that it could accommodate a massive increase in users overnight (we can only dream). Chat requirements The chat protocol used should be flexible: it should allow me to determine who can view/post on ‘chat rooms’ based on certain other factors, as determined by the first poster/creator of the particular ‘chat room’. It should also allow for users to simply install the app and begin using the service, after only providing a simple nickname (which could be changed later). Chat protocol plans Having looked around I think the XMPP protocol is the best candidate. In particular the Multi-user chat extension looks like what I’ll need. Would this be most suited to my requirements, or do you know another potential solution? Cloud service I have been deciding between Amazon Web Services, Google App Engine and Windows Azure. I’m coming to the conclusion that Azure will be best, as it is easier to manage than AWS (ease of scalability will be a key factor in the design), I think it may be less restricted than GAE, plus Azure will soon have toolkits to allow easy interfacing with both Android and iOS phones. Is this the decision you would have made, or would you recommend/look into other cloud services? General project philosophy I have only recently started looking into this project’s feasibility, and am no expert on any of its aspects. So wherever possible I will leave the actual implementations to experts, i.e. choosing a higher-level cloud service, using a well-documented plugin of a, proven reliable, group chat protocol etc. My background I have some programming knowledge from a computer science degree. Main languages I’ve used have been Java and Python, but I don’t want this to affect design decisions for the project. The most appropriate languages for the task should be used, i.e. I don’t mind learning a lot of new skills (my current programming levels are relatively basic anyway). • Playing with F#

  Project Euler is a awesome site.   When working with a new language it can be tricky to find problems that need solving, that are more complex than "Hello World" and simpler than a full blown application. Project Euler gives use just that, cool and thought provoking problems that usually don't take days to solve.  I've solved a number of questions with C# and some with Java.  BTW, I used Java because it had BigInteger support before .Net. A couple weeks ago, back when winter had a firm grip on Columbus, OH, I began playing (researching) with F#.  I began with Problem #1 from Project Euler.  I started by looking at my solution in C#. Type inference. F# infers the type of a value.  In the C# code above we declare a number of variables, the list, and a couple ints.  F# does not require this, it infers the calc (a function) accepts a int and returns a int. Great built in functionality for Lists.  List.map for example. BTW, I don’t think I’m spilling the beans by giving away the code for Problem 1.  It by far is the easiest question, IMHO, solved by 92,000+ people. Next I’ll look into writing a class library with F#.

  Though in every project we (testers) face different set challenges, when it comes to CV, more or less we have same responsibilities. For example responsibilities like understanding requirements, preparing and executing test cases, creating defects, liaising with dev, BA teams will be repeated for every project we involve. If we keep writing same responsibilities for every role, CV becomes mediocre and a yarn. In fact most of the testing resumes I have come across are like that. How do I avoid repetition of responsibilities in my resume and make it more interesting? If this is not the correct forum for this question let me know. Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

• Unity iOS optimization and draw calls

  I am curious of what methods I should approach in optimizing my Unity project for iOS hardware. I have very little image effects running (directional light with low res shadows) and I used the combine children script from the standard assets to lessen the load on the CPU. My project currently runs with 45-57 draw calls at non-intensive segments and up to 178 at intensive segments. I heard that static batching relieves some of the stress, but the game has the environment moving around the player instead of the player moving around the environment. Is there any alternative that I may look towards to improving the draw call number?

Without revealing any details (to avoid bias), I'm curious to know: What features do you love in a scripting language for game development? If you've used Lua, Python, or another embedded language such as Tcl or Guile as your primary scripting language in a game project, what aspects did you find the most useful? Language features (lambdas, classes, parallelism) Implementation features (performance optimisations, JIT, hardware acceleration) Integration features (C, C++, or .NET bindings) Or something entirely different?

  I would like to know why were annotations introduced in Spring and Hibernate? For earlier versions of both the frameworks book authors were saying that if we keep configuration in xml files then it will be easier to maintain (due to decoupling) and just by changing the xml file we can re-configure the application. If we use annotations in our project and in future we want to re-configure application then again we have to compile and build the project. So why were these annotations introduced in these frameworks? From my point of view annotations make the apps dependent on certain framework. Isn't it true?

• Inspecting the model in a Rails application

  I am learning some Ruby on Rails, and am a newbie. Most of my background is in ASP.net MVC on the back end. As I play with a basic scaffold project, I wonder about this case: you jump into an established Rails project and want to get to know the model. Based on what I have seen so far (again, simple scaffold), the properties for a given class are not immediately revealed. I don't see property accessors on the model classes. I do understand that this is because of the dynamic nature of Ruby and such things are not necessary or even perhaps desirable. Convention over code, I get that. (Am familiar with dynamic concepts, mostly via JS.) But if I am somewhere off in a view, and want to quickly know whether the (eg) Person object has a MiddleName property, how would I find that out? I don't have to go into the migrations, do I?

  I am a "one man team" ASP.NET C#, SQL, HTML, JQuery programmer that wants to split workload with two other guys. Since I never actually thought of possible issue in a team of programmer, there are actually quite a few that came to my mind. delegating tasks (who works on what which is also very much related to security). I found Team Foundation Service could be helpful with this problem and started reading about it. Are there any alternatives? security (do now want for original code to be reused outside the project) How to prevent programmers from having access to all parts of code, and how to prevent them from using that code outside of project? Is trust or contract the only way?

• Do I have to deliver my utility and helper code to clients?

  Over the years I've created a bunch of Java utility and helper libraries which I just attach to new projects. Then, when I deliver code to my clients, I send all the code except for the libraries themselves (not JARs but source code files). A client complained that he could not compile the project as some libraries were missing. I tried explaining him about my own libraries, but he was not satisfied. How do you handle such situations? I am still apporting changes to these libraries often and I cannot compile JARs each time I start working on some new project. How to overcome this issue - not to share private libraries (personal intellectual property) and have happy clients?

  This post will be a part of Visual Studio 2012 series. Before some days Microsoft has released the release candidate version of Visual Studio 2012. Today I got installed Visual Studio 2012 and once I loaded the visual studio 2012 first things I noticed that there is purple color blank strip is there at bottom. After doing some R and D on internet I have found that it is used for the different indication. The purple color indicates that there is no project loaded now. Once you open the project this line will be of blue color like below. Once you run and F5 and debug it, the color will change to orange like below . Isn’t that great? • BizTalk 2009 - Custom Functoid Wizard

  When creating BizTalk maps you may find that there are times when you need perform tasks that the standard functoids do not cover.  At other times you may find yourself reapeating a pattern of standard functoids over and over again, adding visual complexity to an otherwise simple process.  In these cases you may find it preferable to create your own custom functoids.  In the past I have created a number of custom functoids from scratch, but recently I decided to try out the Custom Functoid Wizard for BizTalk 2009. After downloading and installing the wizard you should start Visual Studio and select to create a new BizTalk Server Functoid Project. Following the splash screen you will be presented with the General Properties screen, where you can set the classname, namespace, assembly name and strong name key file. The next screen is the first set of properties for the functoid.  First of all is the fuctoid ID; this must be a value above 6000. You should also then set the name, tooltip and description of the functoid.  The name will appear in the visual studio toolbox and the tooltip on hover over in the toolbox.  The descrition will be shown when you configure the functoid inputs when using it in a map; as such it should provide a decent level of information to allow the functoid to be used. Next you must set the category, exception mesage, icon and implementation language.  The category will affect the positioning of the functoid within the toolbox and also some of the behaviours of the functoid. We must then define the parameters and connections for our new functoid.  Here you can define the names and types of your input parameters along with the minimum and maximum number of input connections.  You will also need to define the types of connections accepted and the output type of the functoid. Finally you can click finish and your custom functoid project will be created. The results of this process can be seen in the solution explorer, where you will see that a project, functoid class file and a resource file have been created for you. To do this you will need to build the project, copy the compiled DLL to C:\Program Files\Microsoft BizTalk Server 2009\Developer Tools\Mapper Extensions and then refresh the toolbox in visual studio.

• RTOS experience

  Hi, I have been working as an embedded software engineer on mostly 8 bit micro-controller firmware and desktop/mobile applications development for the past five years. My work on a WinCE project (in which I got introduced to .NET CF) was short lived. I did use core APIs for interrupt processing, peripheral communication, etc...but again, not exactly a pure RTOS environment. In order to get together more solid experience for growing more in the embedded field, I want to work more with RTOSes. Will buying an evaluation board with an RTOS and putting together a project at home be regarded as a good experience or will an online course be more useful? I am just not clear as to what will be regarded as good experience. Any suggestions or directions will greatly help me. I have a passion for the field but just a need a point in the right direction. • Is QTWebKit still being actively developed? [closed]

  I am considering recommending PhantomJS/CasperJS for a project, to provide continuous integration testing. Unfortunately those testing frameworks are based on QTWebKit, and it does not appear that there has been much activity on QTWebKit since September of 2011. It seems this is because of Nokia's financial troubles. QT has since been sold to Digia in August of this year, and can be found on qt.digia.com. It is not apparent whether QTWebKit will be actively developed. Before putting the effort into developing a PhantomJS/CasperJS testing framework, I would like to know whether the underlying QTWebKit framework is probably going to continue to be actively developed (or, alternatively, could be easily substituted with an alternative). I would suspect that since Digia just acquired QT it is a little too soon to tell what direction they will take the project. I would be interested in thoughts and comments on this issue.

  I just got a new project. It’s a WinForm app. And it’s interesting because I will have the possibility to learn how fish farms work and are managed. I will have to develop touch interfaces, and use datasnap to communicate and sync data between farm and office. The development will be done in DELPHI win32, still not sure about the database, but maybe SQLlite. So now comes the difficult part of the project, building it. I am just finishing one. It took me a lot of time to do it and I am a bit “burned out”. I will have time to relax, not much, but a few days. What I am looking is some tips and tricks and possibly tools to be able to speed up the development. It must be up and running in 2 months. So what tricks do you use to speed up things?

Or just to alienate potential users? Assume the project has value to programmers - I'm looking for generalizations here, though specific examples comparing existing projects will be very interesting. What I have in mind involves code generating programming utilities. And one issue I can think of, either way, is a near total inability to enforce any license restrictions. After all, I can't go around the internet demanding that everyone show me their source code just in case!
