  • How should I deal with sqlite errors?

    - by Dustin
I have a long running application written in a mix of C and C++ that stores data in sqlite. While I am confident that committed data will remain available (barring mechanical failure) and uncommitted data will not be, it's not clear to me what I can do with this sort of middle state. I do a large number of inserts in a transaction and then commit it. When an error occurs on a given statement, I can schedule it to be attempted at some point in the future. It sounds like some errors might implicitly rollback my transaction (which would be undesirable if true). A larger problem is what happens when my commit itself fails. Currently, I'm just going to continue to retry it until it works. I would expect that whatever would cause my commit to fail may very well also cause a rollback to fail. What is the recommended mechanism for error handling in such a situation?

  • Is there kind of runtime C++ assembler library around?

    - by Anton
Hi guys! For my small hobby project I need to emit machine code from C++ program in runtime. I have base address 0xDEADBEEF and want to write something like this: Assembler a((void*)0xDEADBEEF); a.Emit() << Push(Reg::Eax) << Push(Reg::Ebx) << Jmp(0xFEFEFEFE); Inline assembler isn't my choice because generated machine code is dependent of the program state. Does anybody know any existing library for doing this? If no, would it be a good idea to develop one from scratch and make it open source? (I mean, will anybody ever use this library if it existed?)

  • iPodMusicPlayer doesn't send notifications, if it is created in background

    - by Aleksejs
If iPodMusicPlayer is created in background, then I doesn't send notifications about playback state changes. Here is code: - (void)initMusicPlayer { musicPlayer = [MPMusicPlayerController iPodMusicPlayer]; NSNotificationCenter *notificationCenter = [NSNotificationCenter defaultCenter]; [notificationCenter addObserver:self selector:@selector(musicPlayerStateChanged:) name:MPMusicPlayerControllerNowPlayingItemDidChangeNotification object:musicPlayer]; [notificationCenter addObserver:self selector:@selector(musicPlayerStateChanged:) name:MPMusicPlayerControllerPlaybackStateDidChangeNotification object:musicPlayer]; [musicPlayer beginGeneratingPlaybackNotifications]; } - (void)viewDidLoad { [self performSelectorInBackground:@selector(initMusicPlayer) withObject:nil]; } Is there some way how to create iPodMusicPlayer in background? Otherwise if it is created on the main thread, it blocks executions for a while.

  • Proper code but can't insert to database

    - by Dchris
I have a Visual Basic project using Access database.I run a query but i don't see any new data on my database table.I don't have any exception or error.Instead of this the success messagebox is shown. Here is my code: Dim ID As Integer = 2 Dim TableNumber As Integer = 2 Dim OrderDate As Date = Format(Now, "General Date") Dim TotalPrice As Double = 100.0 Dim ConnectionString As String = "myconnectionstring" Dim con As New OleDb.OleDbConnection(ConnectionString) Try Dim InsertCMD As OleDb.OleDbCommand InsertCMD = New OleDb.OleDbCommand("INSERT INTO Orders([ID],[TableNumber],[OrderDate],[TotalPrice]) VALUES(@ID,@TableNumber,@OrderDate,@TotalPrice);", con) InsertCMD.Parameters.AddWithValue("@ID", ID) InsertCMD.Parameters.AddWithValue("@TableNumber", TableNumber) InsertCMD.Parameters.AddWithValue("@OrderDate", OrderDate) InsertCMD.Parameters.AddWithValue("@TotalPrice", TotalPrice) con.Open() InsertCMD.ExecuteNonQuery() MessageBox.Show("Successfully Added New Order", "Success", MessageBoxButtons.OK, MessageBoxIcon.Information) con.Close() Catch ex As Exception 'Something went wrong MessageBox.Show(ex.ToString) Finally 'Success or not, make sure it's closed If con.State <> ConnectionState.Closed Then con.Close() End Try What is the problem?

  • Socket Programming for the Web

    - by Benny
I have to interact with a legacy system that accepts socket communication and messages. My goal is to make the application cross-platform, but I need the ability to push messages to the client (i.e. - .NET's WCF, Java's Comet) and detect when the user closes out of their browser to destroy the socket. I have built a prototype of .NET wrapper + WCF + Silverlight but it is so disconnected it is difficult to manage the state of the user and seems to be a nightmare to support. All of that considered, what would be my best option?

  • result set using two different views (from an if statement)

    - by mailman1979
Hi All, I have a bit of code that works with a result set called "result" (original I know) but depending on the incoming variable I'd like to fire the specific query depending. I have the below in an if statement but that just makes the "result" recordset gets those nasty red lines and it doesn't work. I'm sure this is easy to work out. if (area == "dashboard") { IQueryable<ViewGetNavigationMainItem> result = (from m in _entities.ViewGetNavigationMainItems where m.area.Trim() == area.Trim() where m.state == "Online" where m.parentID == parentID orderby m.sequence ascending select m); } else { //Get the Content Items IQueryable<ViewGetNavigationContentItem> result = (from m in _entities.ViewGetNavigationContentItems where m.navID == navID where m.parentID == parentID orderby m.contentOrder ascending select m); } maxRecords = result.Count(); foreach (var item in result) { etc etc etc

  • What is the best way to do multiple listviews in android?

    - by Nicos
Hi all, i am writing a software that i have to drill down on content a lot. For example when the program starts a listview is displayed. When user clicks on an item, then a second listview must be displayed. For example: Select Continent Select Country Select State Select City Select Address What is the best way to do this (less memory, faster, easier to code etc)? To create multiple listviews with multiple adapters? Or 1 listview with multiple Adapters? Lists are loaded from an external XML File. So far i am creating a new adapter and setting it to the listview. How do i create a second listview and after clicking on 1st listview displaying the second one, with animation. Any examples? Extend my class to ListActivity or Activity? Best regards and thanks for helping, Nicos

  • Django - Expression based model constraints

    - by rtmie
Is it possible to set an expression based constraint on a django model object, e.g. If I want to impose a constraint where an owner can have only one widget of a given type that is not in an expired state, but can have as many others as long as they are expired. Obviously I can do this by overriding the save method, but I am wondering if it can be done by setting constraints, e.g. some derivative of the unique_together constraint WIDGET_STATE_CHOICES = ( ('NEW', 'NEW'), ('ACTIVE', 'ACTIVE'), ('EXPIRED', 'EXPIRED') ) class MyWidget(models.Model): owner = models.CharField(max_length=64) widget_type = models.CharField(max_length = 10) widget_state = models.CharField(max_length = 10, choices = WIDGET_STATE_CHOICES) #I'd like to be able to do something like class Meta: unique_together = (("owner","widget_type","widget_state" != 'EXPIRED')

  • Using a part of a class in multiple projects

    - by Axarydax
I have a set of methods that do some utility work over SQL connection, and until now these have been copied over from project to project. But as time goes on, project numbers have grown and I need to keep these methods in sync in case I find a bug or need to update it. I have managed to get it to the state that SQL access class is a partial class, one part is specific for project and contains wrappers for a specific database. The second part is the common one and contains methods that are used in all project-specific databases. The problem is that now I would have the "utility" class copied over 8 projects, with the same content, but in different namespaces. In C/C++ it would have been simple, because I would just have #included the contents of the file wherever needed. What should I do in C#?

  • Windows Service Fails on Launch

    - by Jeff
I'm trying to write a windows service. It installs fine, but fails when I run it with the following exception. I've searched for the string "MyNewProgramService", but I can't find any conversions that would throw this error. I've also added try/catch blocks to a bunch of code with custom exception handling without finding where this exception is occuring. I'm thinking it's somewhere in the auto-generated configuartion/setup code. Any ideas? • What is considered bleeding edge in programming these days?

    - by iestyn
What is "bleeding edge" these days? has it all been done before us, and we are just discovering new ways of implementing mathematical constructs within programming? Functional Programming seems to be making inroads in all areas, but is this just marketing to create interest in a programming arena where it appears that the state of the art has climaxed too soon. have the sales men got hold of the script, and selling ideas that can be sold, dumbing down the future? I see very old ideas making their way into the market place....what are the truly new things that should be considered fresh and new in 2010 onwards, and not some 1960-1980 idea being refocused.

  • Is facebook Data Store API available, or a similar/supported persistence mechanism?

    - by jdk
Question Is there a facebook entry point to a Data Storage mechanism, or should I consider alternatives: What are my alternatives to persist some state information away from my server? ... Background The facebook Data Store Admin tool is made available in a facebook App's Settings (through a link) for the developer to choose as seen here (continue reading below): However when I visit the DataStoreAdmin link nothing works (i.e. clicking the buttons to define the data store types and objects does nothing - I have tried different browsers). The Wiki page for Data Store API hasn't been updated recently and the second last update says the beta Data Store was taken offline. It seems odd the link would be readily available to Apps if the technology is defunct.

  • How big can a SQL Server row be before it's a problem?

    - by John Leidegren
Occasionally I run into this limitation using SQL Server 2000 that a row size can not exceed 8K bytes. SQL Server 2000 isn't really state of the art, but it's still in production code and because some tables are denormalized that's a problem. However, this seems to be a non issue with SQL Server 2005. At least, it won't complain that row sizes are bigger than 8K, but what happens instead and why was this a problem in SQL Server 2000? Do I need to care about my rows growing? Should I try and avoid large rows? Are varchar(max) and varbinary(max) a solution or expensive, in terms of size in database and/or CPU time? Why do I care at all about specifying the length of a particular column, when it seems like it's just a matter of time before someones going to hit that upper limit?

  • Complicated Order By Clause?

    - by Todd
Hi. I need to do what to me is an advanced sort. I have this two tables: Table: Fruit fruitid | received | basketid 1 20100310 2 2 20091205 3 3 20100220 1 4 20091129 2 Table: Basket id | name 1 Big Discounts 2 Premium Fruit 3 Standard Produce I'm not even sure I can plainly state how I want to sort (which is probably a big part of the reason I can't seem to write code to do it, lol). I do a join query and need to sort so everything is organized by basketid. The basketid that has the oldest fruit.received date comes first, then the other rows with the same basketid by date asc, then the basketid with the next earliest fruit.received date followed by the other rows with the same basketid, and so on. So the output would look like this: Fruitid | Received | Basket 4 20091129 Premuim Fruit 1 20100310 Premuim Fruit 2 20091205 Standard Produce 3 20100220 Big Discounts Any ideas how to accomplish this in a single execution?

  • Can you step into specific properties in VS 2010?

    - by cyclotis04
I know that you can either step into every property or not step into every property, but I would really like to be able to step into a specific property, and not the rest. Is this possible? (I also know I can use keyboard commands, but I'm asking if there's a more permanent solution.) I have a lot of properties and my setters do important things, so it's silly to step over them, but most of my getters are pointless. I'm looking for something like: public string ImportantProperty { get { return _importantProperty; } [DebuggerStepThrough(false)] set { if (this.State != ConnectionState.Closed) throw new InvalidOperationException( "Important Property cannot be changed unless This is closed."); if (ImportantProperty == value) return; _importantProperty = value; OnImportantPropertyChanged(new EventArgs()); } } Unfortunately, I can't find anything that will act like [DebuggerStepThrough(false)] and I must resort to turning off property step-over and putting [DebuggerStepThrough] everywhere I don't want to step-through.

  • Intercommunication between Java Chat Servers

    - by Pravingate
I have a application in which I am using socket programming , having this(image) scenario. Where number of clients will try to connect Broadcast server. Now here I am managing load through LVS(Load balancer). so as a example shown in image, suppose 200 clients will wish to login for broadcast they will be distributed as 100 users on server 1 and another 100 users on server 2.clients will get connected to servers using TCP connection. Now I am maintaining user information on server side in arraylist which will be stored in heap memory,Now the problem is if client wish to broadcast to all logged in users, but that particular client is logged in server 1. and so client will not be able to broadcast another 100 users from server 2. Because both ther servers are unaware about each others state. please suggest to solve this scenario by whatever means you want.

  • Django Find Out if User is Authenticated in Custom Tag

    - by greggory.hz
I'm trying to create a custom tag. Inside this custom tag, I want to be able to have some logic that checks if the user is logged in, and then have the tag rendered accordingly. This is what I have: def user_actions(context): request = template.Variable('request').resolve(context) return { 'auth': request['user'].is_athenticated() } register.inclusion_tag('layout_elements/user_actions.html', takes_context=True)(user_actions) When I run this, I get this error: Caught VariableDoesNotExist while rendering: Failed lookup for key [request] in u'[{}]' The view that renders this ends like this: return render_to_response('start/home.html', {}, context_instance=RequestContext(request)) Why doesn't the tag get a RequestContext object instead of the Context object? How can I get the tag to receive the RequestContext instead of the Context? EDIT: Whether or not it's possible to get a RequestContext inside a custom tag, I'd still be interested to know the "correct" or best way to determine a user's authentication state from within the custom tag. If that's not possible, then perhaps that kind of logic belongs elsewhere? Where?

  • To change checkbox text or to not change?

    - by Axarydax
Hi, I'm having an argument with a co-worker, and I'm trying to convince him that it's a bad idea to change checkbox text (label) according to the checkbox state. For example, we have a combobox that automatically picks selected value (and is disabled) when checkbox next to it is checked and is enabled when checkbox is cleared. His idea is to show Autoselect when checkbox is checked and Manual select when it's cleared. I'm sure that this will confuse the user as users tend to think that checking a checkbox next to a verb will make it true, only to find that the label has changed to something else. What is your opinion on this matter? P.S. I remember reading about changing checkbox text somewhere, in a book or blog article, but can't remember where. It would be great to have this in writing :-)

  • NServiceBus - Message Sent to and Removed from Queue, but Never Fire IHandleMessages.Handle

    - by grefly
First let me state, today is my first day using NSesrviceBus - so I hope my question isn't too elementary. I have managed to set up Sender, Receiver, and Messages projects. When I debug the Sender, I see the messages show up in the configured queue. When I debug the Receiver, the messages are removed from the queue. However, my IHandleMessages Handle event never fires, and no Console output is displayed. I'm sure I've done something wrong (I think I may have mixed tutorials from different versions of NServiceBus) - any suggestions would be appreciated.

  • WPF Datatemplate + ItemsControl each item uses > 1 MB Memory?

    - by Matt H.
Does that sound right to anyone???? I have an ItemsControl that displays data from a custom object that implements iNotifyPropertyChanged. The DataTemplate consists of: Border 3 buttons 5 textboxes An ellipse A Bindable RichTextBox (custom class that inherits from RichTextBox... so I could make Document a dependency property (to support binding)) Several grids and stackpanels for layout It uses: Styles (stored in a resource dictionary higher up the tree) Styles affect: colors, thicknesses, and text properties: which are data-bound to a "settings" class that implements iNotifyPropertyChanged, so the user can change display settings That's it! So what gives? I've also noticed that when I empty and remove the ItemsControl, memory isn't freed. over 5000 instances of "CommandBindingCollection" and "WeakReference" are CREATED (using ANTS profiler). And huge number of EffectiveValueEntry objects are created too. So really, what gives!!! :-) Thanks for your insight! Management needs this project soon but in its current state, it's unreleasable.

  • Comparing Design Patterns

    - by Lijo
Hi, I am learning design patterns using C#. One of the challenges that I am facing is that they look similar. Could you please help me to distinguish them – basically when to use them? - Why not the other? Bridge and Strategy State and Strategy Façade and Strategy Composite and Strategy I understand that there are lots of resources available in the web. However they does not treat this special question. [Note: I am looking for implementation examples and rationale behind the selection; not mere explanations] It would be great if you are taking examples from any of the following 1) E-Commerce 2) Payroll system 3) Banking 4) Retailing Thanks for your understanding.. Thanks Lijo

  • WCF server component getting outdated user name

    - by JoelFan
I am overriding System.IdentityModel.Policy.IAuthorizationPolicy.Evaluate as follows: public bool Evaluate(EvaluationContext evaluationContext, ref object state) { var ids = (IList<IIdentity>)evaluationContext.Properties["Identities"]; var userName = ids[0].Name; // look up "userName" in a database to check for app. permissions } Recently one of the users had her user name changed in Active Directory. She is able to login to her Windows box fine with her new user name, but when she tries to run the client side of our application, the server gets her old user name in the "userName" variable in the code above, which messes up our authentication (since her old user name is no longer in our database). Another piece of info: This only happens when she connects to the server code on the Production server. We have the same server code running on a QA server, and it does not have this issue (the QA server code gets her correct (new) user name) Any ideas what could be going on?

  • How does Git know which Index blob to add to a tree?

    - by drozzy
In Pro Git Ch9 the author says: Git normally creates a tree by taking the state of your staging area or index and writing a tree object from it. My question is how does git know which of two consequitive index entries to create the Tree object from? For example: $ echo 'First change' > one.txt $ git add one.txt $ find .git/objects -type f .git/objects/1f/755a7fffe4 //first index entry $ echo 'Second change' > one.txt $ git add one.txt $ find .git/objects -type f .git/objects/2d/234asdf2 //second index entry $ git commit -a -m "Initial commit" $ git cat-file master^{tree} 100644 blob 2d234asdf2 one.txt //How did it know not to take 1f755?? Does it just look at the blob timestamps? Also - what happens to the first blob created - no one is referencing it. Does it just get destroyed or forgotten?

  • android thread management onPause

    - by Kwan Cheng
I have a class that extends the Thread class and has its run method implemented as so. public void run(){ while(!terminate){ if(paused){ Thread.yield(); }else{ accummulator++; } } } This thread is spawned from the onCreate method. When my UI is hidden (when the Home key is pressed) my onPause method will set the paused flag to true and yield the tread. However in the DDMS I still see the uTime of the thread accumulate and its state as "running". So my question is. What is the proper way to stop the thread so that it does not use up CPU time?

  • Is there anything wrong with a class with all static methods?

    - by MatthewMartin
I'm doing code review and came across a class that uses all static methods. The entrance method takes several arguments and then starts calling the other static methods passing along all or some of the arguments the entrance method received. It isn't like a Math class with largely unrelated utility functions. In my own normal programming, I rarely write methods where Resharper pops and says "this could be a static method", when I do, they tend to be mindless utility methods. Is there anything wrong with this pattern? Is this just a matter of personal choice if the state of a class is held in fields and properties or passed around amongst static methods using arguments?
