  • Subquery vs Traditional join with WHERE clause?

    - by BradC
When joining to a subset of a table, any reason to prefer one of these formats over the other? Subquery version: SELECT ... FROM Customers AS c INNER JOIN (SELECT * FROM Classification WHERE CustomerType = 'Standard') AS cf ON c.TypeCode = cf.Code INNER JOIN SalesReps s ON cf.SalesRepID = s.SalesRepID vs the WHERE clause at the end: SELECT ... FROM Customers AS c INNER JOIN Classification AS cf ON c.TypeCode = cf.Code INNER JOIN SalesReps AS s ON cf.SalesRepID = s.SalesRepID WHERE cf.CustomerType = 'Standard' The WHERE clause at the end feels more "traditional", but the first is arguably more clear, especially as the joins get increasingly complex. Only other reason I can think of to prefer the second is that the "SELECT *" on the first might be returning columns that aren't used later (In this case, I'd probably only need to return cf.Code and Cf.SalesRepID)

  • Question on SQL Grouping

    - by Lijo
Hi Team, I am trying to achieve the following without using sub query. For a funding, I would like to select the latest Letter created date and the ‘earliest worklist created since letter created’ date for a funding. FundingId Leter (1, 1/1/2009 )(1, 5/5/2009) (1, 8/8/2009) (2, 3/3/2009) FundingId WorkList (1, 5/5/2009 ) (1, 9/9/2009) (1, 10/10/2009) (2, 2/2/2009) Expected Result - FundingId Leter WorkList (1, 8/8/2009, 9/9/2009) I wrote a query as follows. It has a bug. It will omit those FundingId for which the minimum WorkList date is less than latest Letter date (even though it has another worklist with greater than letter created date). CREATE TABLE #Funding( [Funding_ID] [int] IDENTITY(1,1) NOT NULL, [Funding_No] [int] NOT NULL, CONSTRAINT [PK_Center_Center_ID] PRIMARY KEY NONCLUSTERED ([Funding_ID] ASC) ) ON [PRIMARY] CREATE TABLE #Letter( [Letter_ID] [int] IDENTITY(1,1) NOT NULL, [Funding_ID] [int] NOT NULL, [CreatedDt] [SMALLDATETIME], CONSTRAINT [PK_Letter_Letter_ID] PRIMARY KEY NONCLUSTERED ([Letter_ID] ASC) ) ON [PRIMARY] CREATE TABLE #WorkList( [WorkList_ID] [int] IDENTITY(1,1) NOT NULL, [Funding_ID] [int] NOT NULL, [CreatedDt] [SMALLDATETIME], CONSTRAINT [PK_WorkList_WorkList_ID] PRIMARY KEY NONCLUSTERED ([WorkList_ID] ASC) ) ON [PRIMARY] SELECT F.Funding_ID, Funding_No, MAX (L.CreatedDt), MIN(W.CreatedDt) FROM #Funding F INNER JOIN #Letter L ON L.Funding_ID = F.Funding_ID LEFT OUTER JOIN #WorkList W ON W.Funding_ID = F.Funding_ID GROUP BY F.Funding_ID,Funding_No HAVING MIN(W.CreatedDt) MAX (L.CreatedDt) How can I write a correct query without using subquery? Please help Thanks Lijo

  • TSQL Writing into a Temporary Table from Dynamic SQL

    - by Jeff
Consider the following code: SET @SQL1 = 'SELECT * INTO #temp WHERE ...' exec(@SQL1) SELECT * from #temp (this line throws an error that #temp doesn't exist) Apparently this is because the exec command spins off a separate session and #temp is local to that session. I can use a global temporary table ##temp, but then I have to come up with a naming scheme to avoid collisions. What do you all recommend?

  • Run a proc on several different values of one parameter

    - by WEFX
    I have the following query that gets run within a proc. The function MyFunction returns a table, and this query joins on that table. This proc works great when a @MyArg value is supplied. However, I’m wondering if there’s a way to run this on all @MyArg values in the database. I’m sure there’s a way to do it within a loop, but I know that loops are generally to be avoided at the db layer. I really just need to perform this for the sake of checking (and possibly cleansing) some bad data. SELECT ColumnA, ColumnB, ColumnC FROM ( SELECT a.ColumnA, a.ColumnB, a.ColumnC, ROW_NUMBER() over(partition by a.ColumnD order by f.ColumnX) as RowNum FROM dbo.MyTableA AS a INNER JOIN dbo.MyFunction(@MyArg) f ON f.myID = a.myID WHERE (a.myBit = 1 OR a.myID = @MyArg) ) AS x WHERE x.rownum = 1;

  • SQL Server Maximum row size

    - by DannySmurf
Came across this error today. Wondering if anyone can tell me what it means: Cannot sort a row of size 9522, which is greater than the allowable maximum of 8094. Is that 8094 bytes? Characters? Fields? Is this a problem joining multiple tables that are exceeding some limit?

  • SQL to have one specific record at the top, all others below

    - by superdario
Hey all, I am trying to put together a query that will display one specific record (found by the record's primary ID) at the top, and display all other records below it, sorted by date (I have "date_added" as one of the fields in the table, in addition to primary ID). I could do this with a UNION (first select would locate the record I want, and the other select would display all other records), but I'm wondering if is there perhaps a better way? I'm using Oracle, by the way.

  • select columns by a concat text as columnname in oracle

    - by glaudiston
I have a table with columns named with the number of hour of day like this: col00 NUMBER(5) col01 NUMBER(5) col02 NUMBER(5) ... col23 NUMBER(5) ...and I have another query that returns a count by hour. I want to recover the colXX value by hour.... then I can recover with "decode" or "case when..." but I want know if exists any way to recover the column by a text like this: select "col"||hour from table; in the hypothetical above example if hour is 13 then would be translated like: select col13 from table; there is any way to do this ?

  • SQL Complex Select - Trouble forming query

    - by JoshSpacher
I have three tables, Customers, Sales and Products. Sales links a CustomerID with a ProductID and has a SalesPrice. select Products.Category, AVG(SalePrice) from Sales inner join Products on Products.ProductID = Sales.ProductID group by Products.Category This lets me see the average price for all sales by category. However, I only want to include customers that have more than 3 sales records or more in the DB. I am not sure the best way, or any way, to go about this. Ideas?

  • Help with SQL query

    - by user154301
Hello, I have list of DateTime values, and for each value I need to fetch something from the database. I would like to do this with one query. I know it's possible to pass a table (list) to the stored procedure, but Im not sure how to write the query itself. Let's say I have the following table: CREATE TABLE Shows( ShowId [int] NOT NULL, StartTime DateTime NOT NULL, EndTime DateTime NOT NULL ) and an array of dates DECLARE @myDateArray MyCustomDateArrayType Now, if I were fetching a single item, I would write a query like this: SELECT * FROM Shows WHERE StartTime > @ArrayItem and @ArrayItem < EndTime where @ArrayItem is an item from @myDateArray . But how do I formulate the query that would fetch the information for all array items? Thanks!

  • SQL query help - merge a value to all rows in a column

    - by Tommy
I'm trying to migrate a site from a joomla system to a drupal. The problem is that drupal needs filename and sourcepath in the same row, but joomla only has filename. I'm looking for a way to add sourcepath before the filename in all the rows in that column. I'm figuring it's the UPDATE statement that I should use, but I can't figure out how to construct the query. There's a person with a similar problem here, but I don't find the answers in that thread helpful to my problem: http://www.daniweb.com/forums/showth...t+value&page=2 Any suggestions?

  • Getting the most recent entry per group in a select statement

    - by TheObserver
I have 3 tables to join to get table1.code, table1.series, table2.entry_date, table3.title1 and I'm trying to get the most recent non null table3.title1 grouped by table1.code and table1.series. select table1.code, table1.series, max(table2.entry_date), table3.Title1 from table3 INNER JOIN table2 ON table3.ID = table2.ID INNER JOIN table1 ON table2.source_code = table1.code where table3.Title1 is not NULL group by table1.code, table1.series, table3.Title1 seems to give me all entries with a non null title1 instead of the most recent one. How should I structure the query to just pick the newest version of Title1 per code & series?

  • When does the DataContext will open a connection to the DB?

    - by Eran Betzalel
I am using L2S to access my MSSQL 2008 Express server. I would like to know when the DataContext will open a connection to the DB? and will it close the connection right after it opened it? For example: var dc = new TestDB(); // connection opened and closed? dc.SomeTable.InsertOnSubmit(obj); // connection opened and closed? foreach(var obj in dc.SomeTable.AsEnumerable()) // connection opened and closed? { ... // connection opened and closed? } dc.SubmitChanges(); // connection opened and closed?

  • Can I set ignore_dup_key on for a primary key?

    - by Mr. Flibble
I have a two-column primary key on a table. I have attempted to alter it to set the ignore_dup_key to on with this command: ALTER INDEX PK_mypk on MyTable SET (IGNORE_DUP_KEY = ON); But I get this error: Cannot use index option ignore_dup_key to alter index 'PK_mypk' as it enforces a primary or unique constraint. How else should I set IGNORE_DUP_KEY to on?

  • Codeigniter - Active record - sql - complex join

    - by Jack
I have a function that retrieves all tags from a table: function global_popular_tags() { $this->db->select('tags.*, COUNT(tags.id) AS count'); $this->db->from('tags'); $this->db->join('tags_to_work', 'tags.id = tags_to_work.tag_id'); $this->db->group_by('tags.id'); $this->db->order_by('count', 'desc'); $query = $this->db->get()->result_array(); return $query; } I have another table called 'work'. The 'work' table has a 'draft' column with values of either 1 or 0. I want the COUNT(tags.id) to take into account whether the work with the specific tag is in draft mode (1) or not. Say there are 10 pieces of work tagged with, for example, 'design'. The COUNT will be 10. But 2 of these pieces of work are in draft mode, so the COUNT should really be 8. How do I manage this?

  • SQL change "like" to "contains"

    - by Paul
products table (mySQL) record_id categories (comma-delimited list) --------- -------------------------------- 1 960|1,957|1,958|1 I have the following dynamic query (simplified for the purposes of this question). The query is passed specified categories, each in the format xxxx|yyyy, and I need to return products having the passed category in its comma-delimited list of categories. The current query looks like: select p.* from products p where (p.categories like '%27|0%' or p.categories like '%972|1%' or p.categories like '%969|1%') But, the LIKE clause sometimes permits anomalies. I would like to write the query more like: select p.* from products p where (p.categories contains '27|0' or p.categories contains'972|1' or p.categories contains '969|1') How would I do this?
