  • Is void *p = 0L valid?

    - by Artefacto
In this answer, sassman initializes a pointer with: zend_class_entry* ce = 0L; My question is – is this valid? I would say it isn't, to initialize the variable with a null pointer either an unadorned (and possibly casted to void *) 0 constant, or some macro that evaluates to that such as NULL should be used. However, I can't find definitive language in the standard that supports this interpretation. All it says is: An integer constant expression with the value 0, or such an expression cast to type void *, is called a null pointer constant.

  • Keeping Score in XNA Game

    - by Seven
    Hi. I'm following an XNA tutorial and have the following code for collision detecting (detecting when a bullet collides with a target). Basically I'm looking to increment a score variable to display the score to the screen without re-writing the whole program. No matter where I place it in this method it seems to start incrementing from the number of targets, not from zero. Is there something simple I'm missing here? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. private CollisionType CheckCollision(BoundingSphere sphere) { if (completeCityBox.Contains(sphere) != ContainmentType.Contains) return CollisionType.Boundary; for (int i = 0; i < targetList.Count; i++) { if (targetList[i].Contains(sphere) != ContainmentType.Disjoint) { targetList.RemoveAt(i); i--; AddTargets(); return CollisionType.Target; } } return CollisionType.None; }

  • Communication between c++ objects.

    - by Pradyot
    This is an issue, that I have come acrosss earlier. Basically a c++ object has a member object that does some work, once the work is done , a notification needs to made to the parent. What is the most elegant solution to allow this communication. Does being in this position indicate a flaw with the design to begin with? To elaborate. class A { B member; void do_something(); } class B{ void talk_to_network(); }; void do_something() { //Conditional wait on a variable that will change when talk to network completes. //So need a way for B to inform A, that it is done. }

  • Create object of unknown class (two inherited classes)

    - by Paul
I've got the following classes: class A { void commonFunction() = 0; } class Aa: public A { //Some stuff... } class Ab: public A { //Some stuff... } Depending on user input I want to create an object of either Aa or Ab. My imidiate thought was this: A object; if (/*Test*/) { Aa object; } else { Ab object; } But the compiler gives me: error: cannot declare variable ‘object’ to be of abstract type ‘A’ because the following virtual functions are pure within ‘A’: //The functions... Is there a good way to solve this?

  • [iphone] use NSString in other method?!

    - by user134282
It's really embarrassing but i stuck on it for two hours of trial and error. I declared an NSString in the interface as: NSString *testString; Then i made a property and synthesized it. I allocate it in viewDidLoad with: testString = [[NSString alloc] initWithFormat:@"thats my value: %i", row]; If i want to get the value of the string in another method it always return (null). So the string is empty, but why? how do i make it accessible for every function inside of one class? So i don't want to make a global var just a "global variable inside the class" It's really confusing because as long as i code i never ran into this problem :( thanks a lot for helping me!

  • Passing dynamic parameter to a JavaScript function using innerHTML

    - by user958263
I am having issues passing a dynamic parameter to a JavaScript function using innerHTML. Included below is the current code that I am using: var name = "test"; frm.innerHtml = '<button name="close" id="close" title="Cancel" type="button" onclick="closeTab('+name+');">Return</button>'; When I debug the code of the CloseTab() function, the parameter specified by the name variable is null. I believe there is a problem with the declaration of the value while modifying the innerHTML property. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

  • .NET Garbage Collection behavior (with DataTable)

    - by gmac
I am wonder why after creating a very simple DataTable and then setting it to null why Garbage Collection does not clear out all the memory used by that DataTable. Here is an example. The variable Before should be equal to Removed but it is not. { long Before = 0, After = 0, Removed = 0, Collected = 0; Before = GC.GetTotalMemory(true); DataTable dt = GetSomeDataTableFromSql(); After = GC.GetTotalMemory(true); dt = null; Removed = GC.GetTotalMemory(true); GC.Collect(); Collected = GC.GetTotalMemory(true); } Gives the following results. Before = 388116 After = 731248 Removed = 530176 Collected = 530176

  • C++ inheritance: scoping and visibility of members

    - by Poiuyt
Can you explain why this is not allowed, #include <stdio.h> class B { private: int a; public: int a; }; int main() { return 0; } while this is? #include <stdio.h> class A { public: int a; }; class B : public A{ private: int a; }; int main() { return 0; } In both the cases, we have one public and one private variable named a in class B. edited now!

  • Easy way to cast an object array into another type in C#

    - by Na7coldwater
I want to be able to be able to quickly cast an array of objects to a different type, such as String, but the following code doesn't work: String[] a = new String[2]; a[0] = "Hello"; a[1] = "World"; ArrayList b = new ArrayList(a); String[] c = (String[]) b.ToArray(); And I don't want to have to do this: String[] a = new String[2]; a[0] = "Hello"; a[1] = "World"; ArrayList b = new ArrayList(a); Object[] temp = b.ToArray(); Object[] temp = b.ToArray(); String[] c = new String[temp.Length]; for(int i=0;i<temp.Length;i++) { c[i] = (String) temp[i]; } Is there an easy way to do this without using a temporary variable?

  • Isotope active class when using select menu

    - by Michael
I am using Metafizzy's Isotope plugin and have it set up to filter using a select menu as seen here: http://jsfiddle.net/trewknowledge/jJZEN/ $(function() { var $container = $('#container'), $select = $('#filters select'); $container.isotope({ itemSelector: '.item' }); $select.change(function() { var filters = $(this).val(); ; $container.isotope({ filter: filters }); }); });? What I am trying to figure out is how I would add a highlight/active class to the selected elements when the filters variable is already being used.

  • C#: reading in a text file more 'intelligently'

    - by DarthSheldon
I have a text file which contains a list of alphabetically organized variables with their variable numbers next to them formatted something like follows: aabcdef 208 abcdefghijk 1191 bcdefga 7 cdefgab 12 defgab 100 efgabcd 999 fgabc 86 gabcdef 9 h 11 ijk 80 ... ... I would like to read each text as a string and keep it's designated id# something like read "aabcdef" and store it into an array at spot 208. The 2 issues I'm running into are: I've never read from file in C#, is there a way to read, say from start of line to whitespace as a string? and then the next string as an int until the end of line? given the nature and size of these files I do not know the highest ID value of each file (not all numbers are used so some files could house a number like 3000, but only actually list 200 variables) So how could I make a flexible way to store these variables when I don't know how big the array/list/stack/etc.. would need to be.

  • Java synchronizing static list ?

    - by JavaUser
Hi, In a Java class , i am having a static list so this list is shared across all the objects of this class. The business logic in this class will run periodically which is invoked by some method with out passing instance parameters. Now I want to invoke this run method based on the list(I will add some vales into this list based on JMS) ,this list may empty sometimes and after finishing the run , i am emptying this list. Now my question is , whether I need to synchronize this list or not? Also let me know is there any other way to pass value in one object instance(Thread1) to other object instance (Thread2) other than having Static variable(static list)? Thx

  • Catch a generic exception in Java?

    - by Alex Baranosky
We use JUnit 3 at work and there is no ExpectedException annotation. I wanted to add a utility to our code to wrap this: try { someCode(); fail("some error message"); } catch (SomeSpecificExceptionType ex) { } So I tried this: public static class ExpectedExceptionUtility { public static <T extends Exception> void checkForExpectedException(String message, ExpectedExceptionBlock<T> block) { try { block.exceptionThrowingCode(); fail(message); } catch (T ex) { } } } However, Java cannot use generic exception types in a catch block, I think. How can I do something like this, working around the Java limitation? Is there a way to check that the ex variable is of type T?

  • Interesting XSL Dilemma

    - by bobber205
I've got this issue. A template called "checkbox" that's called from while inside a table HTML element and also outside of it. To solve an issue, I've added tags to "checkbox" input control. Here's what I'd like to do to but I'm not sure if it's possible or not. When I hit my "row" (part of the custom table markup) template, I would set some variable or pass some parameter, that for each template applied afterwards, would know it was in a "row" and do something special based on this information. I know I can't add parameters to apply-templates. I may be able to add a row "mode" but I can't make changes to each template and have one copy with the mod parameter and one without. Thanks for any suggestions. I know the ideal solution would to be to make changes to the XML but I'm not sure if I can do that as this point. That's a "content" issue. :P Thanks!

  • what is the accepted naming convention for int, string, array, list, object, etc...

    - by RJ
The company I work for now uses a set naming convention for their C# variables such as iSomeName for int, sSomeName for string, aSomeName for arrays, bSomeName for boolean, dSomeName for datetime and so on. My previous employer did not use the i, s, a, b and d prefixes and just named the variables a good understandable name. My impression is that these prefixes lost favor a while ago and from what I read it is not the current trend. It seems fine to me either way as long as the variable is descriptive enough to understand what it is doing but I was wondering what the now-a-day accepted practice is for naming variables?

  • Run command with no terminal output

    - by Insomaniacal
Hello, I've searched around online, but can't find the answer to my question. What I want to do is run a command in pythong, using the subprocess module, and store the output in a variable. However, I do not want the command's output to be printed to the terminal. For this code: def storels(): a = subprocess.Popen("ls",shell=True) storels() I get the directory listing in the terminal, instead of having it stored in a. I've also tried def storels(): subprocess.Popen("ls > tmp",shell=True) a = open("./tmp") [Rest of Code] storels() This also prints the output of ls to my terminal. I've even tried this command with the somewhat dated os.system method, since running "ls tmp" in the terminal doesn't print ls to the terminal at all, but stores it in tmp. However, the same thing happens. I'm using python 2.6. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance!

  • Using PHP to grab the absolute URL of the script?

    - by Rob
Basically, I want my script to output its absolute URL, but I don't want to statically program it into the script. For example, if my current URL is http://example.com/script.php I want to be able to store it as a variable, or echo it. i.e. $url = http://example.com/script.php; But if I move the script to a different server/domain, I want it to automatically adjust to that, i.e. $url = http://example2.com/newscript.php; But I have no idea how to go about doing this. Any ideas?

  • Access Ruby on Rails 'public' directory without relative path

    - by huntca
I have a flash object I wish to load and I belive the best place to store that asset is in the public directory. Suppose it's stored in public/flash, there must be a better way to path to the swf than what I've done below. Note the 'data' element, it has a relative path. def create_vnc_object haml_tag :object, :id => 'flash', :width => '100%', :height => '100%', :type => 'application/x-shockwave-flash', :data => '../../flash/flash.swf' do haml_tag :param, :name => 'movie', :value => '../../flash/flash.swf' end end Is there some rails variable that points to public?

  • What is a good rule for when to prepend members with 'this' (C#)?

    - by RichAmberale
If I am accessing a member field, property, or method, I'm never sure when I should prepend it with 'this'. I am not asking about cases where it is required, like in the case where a local variable has the same name. I am talking about cases where the meaning is exactly the same. Which is more readable? Are there any standards, best practices, or rules of thumb I should be following? Should it just be consistent throughout a class, or an entire code base?

  • Are sessions modifiable by the client/user?

    - by Sev
In my PHP Web-App I use sessions to store the user's data. For exmaple, if a user logs in, then an instance of the User class is generated and stored in a Session. I have access levels associated with each user to determine their privileges. Store the user in a session by: $_SESSION['currentUser'] = new User($_POST['username']); For example: if($_SESSION['currentUser'] -> getAccessLevel() == 1) { //allow administration functions } where getAccessLevel() is simply a get method in the User class that returns the _accesslevel member variable. Is this secure? Or can the client somehow modify their access level through session manipulation of some sort?

  • Problem with NSMutableArray?

    - by RRB
Hi, i initialize instance variables in .h file, NSInteger saveValue0, saveValue1, saveValue2, saveValue3; NSMutableArray *nodeArray; Now in .m file, in viewWillAppear event, saveValue0 = 0; saveValue1 = 2; saveValue2 = 3; saveValue3 = 0; nodeArray = [[NSMutableArray alloc] initWithObjects:saveValue0, saveValue1, saveValue2, saveValue3, nil]; But above variable does not inserted in the array. When i trying to see the objects in array using break point, it gives me 0 objects present in nodeArray. Why it will give me 0 objects. Any reason behind that?

  • mysql_real_escape_string & slashes (again, oh yes)

    - by Fizzadar
Righto, firstly magic quotes & runtime are disabled correctly in php.ini, and confirmed by phpinfo(). PHP version: 5.3.4 MySQL version: 5.1.52 I'm only use mysql_real_escape_string on the data, after htmlspecialchars and a trim, that's all the data cleaning on the variable. Yet, when I submit a single quote, the slash remains in the database. When running mysql_query I'm using "' . $var . '", although in the past this hasn't changed anything (could be due to the double quotes?). Any ideas? and please don't tell me about PDO/prepared statements, I'm aware of them and I have my reasons for doing it this way. Thanks!

  • Rails: saving a string on an object -- syntax problem?

    - by Veep
Hey there, I am trying to write a simple function to clean a filename string and update the object. When I save a test string it works, but when I try to save the string variable I've created, nothing happens. But when I return the string, the output seems to be correct! What am I missing? def clean_filename clean_name = filename clean_name.gsub! /^.*(\\|\/)/, '' clean_name.gsub! /[^A-Za-z0-9\.\-]/, '_' clean_name.gsub!(/\_+/, ' ') #update_attribute(:filename, "test") #<-- correctly sets filename to test #update_attribute(:filename, clean_name) #<-- no effect????? WTF #return clean_name <-- seems to returns the correct string end Thank you very much.

  • How could I compare these database values in PHP?

    - by Dan
So a user selects from a drop down list a value. I take this value, put it into a variable, then select from the database the ID value of that table A holding the selected value also. So now I'm trying to use that ID value to get to a many-to-many relationship table that has the selected value from table A to a different table B. The many-to-many relationship table has both IDs. How can I compare this using PHP? So it would be like: $A = $_POST['a']; $sql = "SELECT a, aID from TABLEA WHERE a = $A"; What do I do then to compare the aID with the many-to-many relationships table, then get the other ID in that table and then take that ID to get values from table B?
