  • Should I read Kochan's "Programming in C" (10 years old) [on hold]

    I plan on learning Obj-C and so I decided to do it by the book and learn C first. The problem: S.G. Kochan's highly acclaimed book "Programming in C" (3rd edition) is almost ten years old now1. I really want to get started and everywhere I looked this seemed like the book for beginners with an assumed zero-knowledge in programming2. So, should I buy it or not? 1: A 4th edition is available to preorder but it's only due in March, 2014! 2: I know some HTML, CSS, and a tiny bit of PHP.

  • DHCP forwarding behind access list on a Cisco Catalyst

    I'm having some trouble with forwarding DHCP from a subnet behind an access list on a Cisco Catalyst 4500 switch. I'm hoping somebody can see the mistake I'm making. The subnet is defined like this: (first three octets of IP addresses and vrf name anonymized) interface Vlan40 ip vrf forwarding vrf_name ip address 10.10.10.126 255.255.255.0 secondary ip address 10.10.10.254 255.255.255.0 ip access-group 100 out ip helper-address 10.10.20.36 no ip redirects I tried turning on a VMWare machine on this subnet that was configured to use DHCP, but I never got a DHCP response and the DHCP server didn't receive a request. I tried putting the following in the access-list: access-list 100 permit udp host 10.10.10.254 host 10.10.20.36 eq bootps access-list 100 permit udp host 10.10.10.254 host 10.10.20.36 eq bootpc access-list 100 permit udp host 10.10.20.36 host 10.10.10.254 eq bootps access-list 100 permit udp host 10.10.20.36 host 10.10.10.254 eq bootpc That didn't help. Can anybody see what the problem is? I know that the DHCP server works; our whole network is running off of this DHCP server I also know that the subnet works because we have active servers running on the network The DHCP scope is already defined on the DHCP server The subnet is correctly defined on the VMWare server (already servers running on the subnet on VMWare) Edit 2012-10-19: This is solved! The subnet had formerly been defined as a /25 network, but was then expanded into a /24 network. When the DHCP scope was altered after this change it was done incorrectly; the gateway was moved to .254, the leasable IP range was in the lower half of the /24 subnet but we forgot to change the CIDR prefix from /25 into /24. This happened some 2 years ago, and we didn't need to use DHCP on this server network again until this week. Thank you MDMarra and Jason Seemann for looking at the question and trying to troubleshoot. Now I'm wondering if I should mark Jason's answer as the accepted answer (I am new to the Stack Exchange network, so I don't know the etiquette of what to do if I misstated the question like in this case).

  • Cisco ASA: How to route PPPoE-assigned subnet?

    We've just received a fiber uplink, and I'm trying to configure our Cisco ASA 5505 to properly use it. The provider requires us to connect via PPPoE, and I managed to configure the ASA as a PPPoE client and establish a connection. The ASA is assigned an IP address by PPPoE, and I can ping out from the ASA to the internet, but I should have access to an entire /28 subnet. I can't figure out how to get that subnet configured on the ASA, so that I can route or NAT the available public addresses to various internal hosts. My assigned range is: 188.xx.xx.176/28 The address I get via PPPoE is 188.xx.xx.177/32, which according to our provider is our Default Gateway address. They claim the subnet is correctly routed to us on their side. How does the ASA know which range it is responsible for on the Fiber interface? How do I use the addresses from my range? To clarify my config; The ASA is currently configured to default-route to our ADSL uplink on port Ethernet0/0 (interface vlan2, nicknamed Outside). The fiber is connected to port Ethernet0/2 (interface vlan50, nicknamed Fiber) so I can configure and test it before making it the default route. Once I'm clear on how to set it all up, I'll fully replace the Outside interface with Fiber.     I have a domain controller running on Windows 2008 Server R2 and users login to application servers on which Windows 2003 Server SP2 is installed. I have applied a Group Policy to clean temporary internet files on exit i.e to delete all temporary internet files when users close the browser. But the group policy doesn't seem to work as user profile size keeps on increasing and the major space is occupied by temporary internet files therefore increasing the disk usage. How can i enforce automatic deletion of temporary internet files?

  • Wireless internet is connected to an open network but has no internet

    I just installed Ubuntu on my laptop yesterday and it connected to the wireless fine. Then I took it to school, put it on their wired connection, downloaded some stuff, and now the wireless doesn't work. At first it would detect networks, but not connect. I restarted it and now it can connect, but it acts like it doesn't have internet in the browser. Wired connection still works fine on it. I know it isn't the network because my ipad is working on the wireless connection fine. I found another solution on here switching the security settings for the wireless, but this is the apartment's wireless so they have it open, and I won't be able to mess with it at all.     So Microsoft has stated that Internet Explorer 9, the first version of IE with wide support for HTML5 (including CSS3), will not be available on Windows XP. Given that Windows XP is still the dominant PC operating system, are web developers doomed to a prolonged future of supporting another inferior (in terms of supported features) yet stubborn browser. Does the fact that Microsoft will support XP until April of 2014 and will never support IE9 on XP mean that IE8 will be the dominant browser for the next three years?

    I'm not sure if it's just me, but whenever I open .txt files in internet explorer, it always parses the HTML, so forms, buttons, fields all show up. It does this on multiple computers, and I'm fairly sure it hasn't always done this. I know FireFox doesn't, FireFox loads it as a text file. Does anyone else have this problem? If so, have you solved it? If so again, how?

    Trying to run ghettoVCB for the first time here. I am using a NAS that is set up as a datastore on the host. I did a dry run and it completed without error. The VM is ~500GB and there is only one on the host that I'm trying to backup. The logfile mimics some of the above and is sitting at "Creating Snapshot..." and nothing else is coming in. Is the vmdk on the NAS showing all those GB because of the provisioning or something? i.e. is the size of the file not necessarily indicative of the amount of actual data that has been copied? Is there are reason it might be "Stuck" at 10%? i.e. could it really be taking this long? Any other tips? Thanks. Edit: as soon as I hit the Submit button, I glance over to see that it has incremented to 11% done. Good to know it'll be complete sometime around when the sun explodes.

  • upgraded to OSX 10.6.6 - now cannot sudo

    I've been using sudo until now. After an upgrade to 10.6.6, now sudo gives me incorrect password. My user has admin rights, and i can execute admin functions from the GUI (such as System Prefs, updating software etc). However, within Terminal, sudo has stopped accepting the password. I have repaired permissions and restarted. Some pointers ask me to use Directory Utility, but in this version it does not have a "set root user" option. I downloaded ServerAdminTool 10.5.7 but this does not work on my system. Some say to add myself to "wheel" group, but i need sudo for that. Some say if i am in admin group, i should be able to sudo, but this is not happening. (Using OS X Snow Leopard 10.6.6, earlier 10.5.8) MODERATOR: please delete this question. The issue had to do with Textpander expanding the password resulting in sudo failing. Not an OS upgrade issue.

Every time I do, however, I continue to get this annoying error, saying that the kernal and OS version mismatch, and the OS Version is no longer set.
