• LookAndFeel not changing in Ubuntu

- by Tom Brito
Anyone knows Why the laf is not changing in the following code? (running in Ubuntu) import java.awt.Dialog; import java.awt.event.ActionEvent; import java.awt.event.ActionListener; import javax.swing.JComboBox; import javax.swing.JDialog; import javax.swing.JPanel; import javax.swing.UIManager; import javax.swing.UIManager.LookAndFeelInfo; public class TEST extends JPanel { public TEST() { final LookAndFeelInfo[] lafArray = UIManager.getInstalledLookAndFeels(); String[] names = new String[lafArray.length]; for (int i = 0; i < names.length; i++) { names[i] = lafArray[i].getName(); } final JComboBox cb = new JComboBox(names); cb.addActionListener(new ActionListener() { public void actionPerformed(ActionEvent ev) { try { int index = cb.getSelectedIndex(); LookAndFeelInfo lafInfo = lafArray[index]; String lafClassName = lafInfo.getClassName(); System.out.println(lafClassName); UIManager.setLookAndFeel(lafClassName); } catch (Exception e) { e.printStackTrace(); } } }); add(cb); } public static void main(String[] args) throws Exception { System.out.println("start"); JDialog dialog = new JDialog(null, Dialog.ModalityType.APPLICATION_MODAL); dialog.setContentPane(new TEST()); dialog.pack(); dialog.setLocationRelativeTo(null); dialog.setVisible(true); dialog.dispose(); System.out.println("end"); } }

• Google Maps API V3: How to jump to a specific marker from outside the map?

- by Tom
I have a map with two markers on it. The initial view of the map only shows one marker, and I want to provide a link next to the map that will move the map to the 2nd marker when clicked. Here's a demo of what I want, using v2 of the API: http://arts.brighton.ac.uk/contact-university-of-brighton-faculty-of-arts (note the links below the map) Here's what I have so far: So what I'd like to add is a link to marker2, to move the map some 50-odd miles up, e.g. Second location. How would I do this?

• Objective-C Plugin Architecture Security (Mac, not iphone)

- by Tom Dalling
I'm possibly writing a plugin system for a Cocoa application (Mac, not iphone). A common approach is the make each plugin a bundle, then inject the bundle into the main application. I'm concerned with the security implications of doing this, as the bundle will have complete access to the Objective-C runtime. I am especially concerned with a plugin having access to the code that handles registration and serial keys. Another plugin system we are considering is based on distributed notifications. Basically, each plugin will be a separate process, and they will communicate via distributed notifications only. Is there a way to load bundles securely (e.g. sandboxing)? If not, do you see any problems with using distributed notifications? Are there any other plugin architectures that would be better?

• RSA example that do not use NoPadding

Where can I find a RSA encrypt example that does not use "NoPadding"? --update Better: how to make this code run correctly without throw the "too much data for RSA block" exception? import java.math.BigInteger; import java.security.KeyFactory; import java.security.interfaces.RSAPrivateKey; import java.security.interfaces.RSAPublicKey; import java.security.spec.RSAPrivateKeySpec; import java.security.spec.RSAPublicKeySpec; import javax.crypto.Cipher; /** * Basic RSA example. */ public class TestRSA { public static void main(String[] args) throws Exception { byte[] input = new byte[100]; Cipher cipher = Cipher.getInstance("RSA/None/NoPadding", "BC"); KeyFactory keyFactory = KeyFactory.getInstance("RSA", "BC"); // create the keys RSAPublicKeySpec pubKeySpec = new RSAPublicKeySpec(new BigInteger("d46f473a2d746537de2056ae3092c451", 16), new BigInteger("11", 16)); RSAPrivateKeySpec privKeySpec = new RSAPrivateKeySpec(new BigInteger( "d46f473a2d746537de2056ae3092c451", 16), new BigInteger("57791d5430d593164082036ad8b29fb1", 16)); RSAPublicKey pubKey = (RSAPublicKey) keyFactory.generatePublic(pubKeySpec); RSAPrivateKey privKey = (RSAPrivateKey) keyFactory.generatePrivate(privKeySpec); // encryption step cipher.init(Cipher.ENCRYPT_MODE, pubKey); byte[] cipherText = cipher.doFinal(input); // decryption step cipher.init(Cipher.DECRYPT_MODE, privKey); byte[] plainText = cipher.doFinal(cipherText); } }

• WPF TextBox Custom Dictionary Support

- by Tom Allen
Has anyone found a workaround yet for getting custom dictionary support working for the built in spellchecking on WPF TextBoxes/RichTextBoxes? We've been probing the spelling stuff with reflector hoping to find where the dictionary entries are coming from, but it's looking very much like it's going to be a COM object.... I know it's not currently supported and that Microsoft were looking into supporting it in a future release, but that was quite a while ago and I can't seem to find any recent news about it. Clutching at staws, I've posted a suggestion up on Connect: https://connect.microsoft.com/VisualStudio/feedback/ViewFeedback.aspx?FeedbackID=470233

• PHP ORMs: Doctrine vs. Propel

- by Tom
Hi, I'm starting a new project with symfony which is readily integrated with Doctrine and Propel, but I of course need to make a choice.... I was wondering if more experienced people out there have general pros and/or cons for going with either of these two? Thanks a lot. EDIT: Thanks for the all the responses, useful stuff. There's no truly correct answer to this question so I'll just mark as approved the one that got the most popular up-votes.

• What would you recommend to do simple 2D Graphics?

- by Tom Ritter
I want to build a program that will (as part of what it's doing) display lines organically growing and interacting horizontally across the screen. Here's a sample image, just imagine the lines sprouting from the left and growing to the right: The lines would look like the lines used on Google Maps Transit Overlay or OnNYTurf's transit pages. It's a personal project, so I'm open to just about any language and library combination. But I don't know where to start. What have you used in the past to create graphics that are similar to this? What would you recommend? I want it to run on Windows without any extras needed (.Net is fine), and it doesn't have to run elsewhere. I needs to run as an actual program, not javascript in the browser. There's obviously no 'right' answer to this, but the purpose isn't to start an argument about X better than Y but rather just find a list of graphics toolkits that do simple 2D graphics that people recommend because of their ease of use or community or whatever.

• Do Any Client-Side JavaScript Frameworks Integrate Well With Node.js+Express.js+socket.io.js?

- by Tom D
I'm building an webapp using Node.js+Express.js+socket.io.js on the backend. Do any of the popular front-end frameworks (Agility, Angular, Backbone, Closure, Dojo, Ember, GWT, jQuery, Knockback, Knockout, Spine, YUI, etc) integrate well with this backend for "real-time" applications? I want my application to have a very "real-time" feel. Specifically, when a user submits a form I want the information to be sent using web sockets to the backend for validation and (if validation passes) to be updated in the database. Then, the server-side will use web sockets to send a confirmation that the data was saved or some list of errors. I will use the server's response to update the page using JavaScript. I know all this can be done with any of the listed frameworks. I'm interested in features of particular frameworks that will help the framework integrate better with the Node-based backend than the other frameworks.

• VARCHAR does not work as expected in Apache Derby

- by Tom Brito
I'm having this same problem: How can I truncate a VARCHAR to the table field length AUTOMATICALLY in Derby using SQL? To be specific: CREATE TABLE A ( B VARCHAR(2) ); INSERT INTO A B VALUES ('1234'); would throw a SQLException: A truncation error was encountered trying to shrink VARCHAR '123' to length 2. that is already answered: No. You should chop it off after checking the meta-data. Or if you don't wanna check the meta-data everytime, then you must keep both your code and database in sync. But thats not a big deal, its a usual practice in validators. but my doubt is: isn't VARCHAR suppose to variate its size to fit the data? What's wrong with apache derby's VARCHAR?

• Updating List Elements, Haskell

- by Tom
I have homework where I am to update a list using a function that takes two elements and returns a value of part of the first element given in the function. So it's required to update the entire listing by going through each element and update its value by applying the function against all other elements in the list (including itself). So far I've been trying to firstly map the list (so that each element is done the same) and then specifically update each elements value by mapping again just the value of the specified element however in trying to map just the specific value through: the function, the specific element and the entire list I keep getting complaints that I'm inferring the list of values made from the 'map function p@list list' rather than simply giving the value at p@list. Is this the correct method to try to update a list against the entire list itself? EDIT: spelling mistakes and grammar

• Separation of concerns and authentication

- by Tom Gilder
I'm trying to be a Good Developer and separate my concerns out. I've got an ASP.NET MVC project with all my web code, and a DAL project with all the model code. Sometimes code in the DAL needs to check if the current user is authorized to perform some actions, by checking something like CurrentUser.IsAdmin. For the web site, the current is derived from the Windows username (from HttpContext.Current.User.Identity), but this is clearly a web concern and shouldn't be coupled to the DAL. What's the best pattern to loosely couple the authentication? Should the DAL be asking the MVC code for a username, or the MVC be telling the DAL? Are there advantages or disadvantages to one or the other? Thank you!

• pyopengl: Could it replace c++ ?

- by Tom
Hi everyone. I'm starting a computer graphics course, and I have to choose a language. Choices are between C++ and Python. I have no problem with C++, python is a work in progress. So i was thinking to go down the python road, using pyopengl for graphics part. I have heard though, that performance is an issue. Is python / pyopengl mature enough to challenge C++ on performance? I realize its a long shot, but I'd like to hear your thoughts, experiences on uses of pyopengl. Thanks in advance.

• convert special characters but not tags

- by Tom
I've got some text which needs converting to use HTML entities, but it also contains tags. Here's a sample:
Ofcom issued the warning to Global-owned GWR in Bristol – which is required to operate as a "contemporary and chart music and information station" – for operating outside the music
The (" and -) need to be converted but the paragraph tags must remain HTML. Using something like htmlentities converts everything, how can I convert everything but the tags?

• Regex: How do I match some regex logic 1 or more times?

- by tom
I already have some regex logic which says to look for a div tag with class=something. However, this might occur more than once (one after another). You can't simply add square brackets around that complex regex logic already (e.g. [:some complicated regex logic already existing:]* -- so how do you do it in regex? I want to avoid having to use the programming language logic to append that regex logic after itself if I can... Thanks

• Problem with std::map and std::pair

Hi everyone. I have a small program I want to execute to test something #include #include <iostream> using namespace std; struct _pos{ float xi; float xf; bool operator<(_pos& other){ return this->xi < other.xi; } }; struct _val{ float f; }; int main() { map<_pos,_val> m; struct _pos k1 = {0,10}; struct _pos k2 = {10,15}; struct _val v1 = {5.5}; struct _val v2 = {12.3}; m.insert(std::pair<_pos,_val>(k1,v1)); m.insert(std::pair<_pos,_val>(k2,v2)); return 0; } The problem is that when I try to compile it, I get the following error $ g++ m2.cpp -o mtest In file included from /usr/include/c++/4.4/bits/stl_tree.h:64, from /usr/include/c++/4.4/map:60, from m2.cpp:1: /usr/include/c++/4.4/bits/stl_function.h: In member function ‘bool std::less<_Tp>::operator()(const _Tp&, const _Tp&) const [with _Tp = _pos]’: /usr/include/c++/4.4/bits/stl_tree.h:1170: instantiated from ‘std::pair<typename std::_Rb_tree<_Key, _Val, _KeyOfValue, _Compare, _Alloc>::iterator, bool> std::_Rb_tree<_Key, _Val, _KeyOfValue, _Compare, _Alloc>::_M_insert_unique(const _Val&) [with _Key = _pos, _Val = std::pair<const _pos, _val>, _KeyOfValue = std::_Select1st<std::pair<const _pos, _val> >, _Compare = std::less<_pos>, _Alloc = std::allocator<std::pair<const _pos, _val> >]’ /usr/include/c++/4.4/bits/stl_map.h:500: instantiated from ‘std::pair<typename std::_Rb_tree<_Key, std::pair<const _Key, _Tp>, std::_Select1st<std::pair<const _Key, _Tp> >, _Compare, typename _Alloc::rebind<std::pair<const _Key, _Tp> >::other>::iterator, bool> std::map<_Key, _Tp, _Compare, _Alloc>::insert(const std::pair<const _Key, _Tp>&) [with _Key = _pos, _Tp = _val, _Compare = std::less<_pos>, _Alloc = std::allocator<std::pair<const _pos, _val> >]’ m2.cpp:30: instantiated from here /usr/include/c++/4.4/bits/stl_function.h:230: error: no match for ‘operator<’ in ‘__x < __y’ m2.cpp:9: note: candidates are: bool _pos::operator<(_pos&) $ I thought that declaring the operator< on the key would solve the problem, but its still there. What could be wrong? Thanks in advance.

• Why Sql not bringing back results unless I set varchar size?

- by Tom
I've got an SQL script that fetches results based on the colour passed to it, but unless I set the size of the variable defined as a varchar to (50) no results are returned. If I use: like ''+@Colour+'%' then it works but I don't really want to use it in case it brings back results I don't need or want. The column FieldValue has a type of Varchar(Max) (which can't be changed as this field can store different things). It is part of aspdotnetstorefront package so I can't really change the tables or field types. This doesn't work: declare @Col VarChar set @Col = 'blu' select * from dbo.MetaData as MD where MD.FieldValue = @Colour But this does work: declare @Col VarChar (50) set @Col = 'blu' select * from dbo.MetaData as MD where MD.FieldValue = @Colour The code is used in the following context, but should work either way <query name="Products" rowElementName="Variant"> <sql> select * from dbo.MetaData as MD where MD.Colour = @Colour </sql> <queryparam paramname="@ProductID" paramtype="runtime" requestparamname="pID" sqlDataType="int" defvalue="0" validationpattern="^\d{1,10}$" /> <queryparam paramname="@Colour" paramtype="runtime" requestparamname="pCol" sqlDataType="varchar" defvalue="" validationpattern=""/> </query> Any Ideas?

• Symfony/Doctrine: Unserialize in action vs template

- by Tom
Hi, Can anyone tell me why calling "unserialize" works fine in an action but gives an offset error in a template? It's basically possible to unserialize a database text result into a variable in an action and pass it to template, in which case it displays fine: $this->clean = unserialize($this->raw); <?php echo $clean ?> But not if called directly in a template: <?php echo unserialize($raw) ?> Would be interested in knowing why this is so and whether there's some workaround. Thanks.

• Using jQuery's $.getScript(), can I sense 304 Not Modified Headers?

- by Tom
I have an application (a widget) where I use $.getScript() on a 5 minute timer, loading a file every five minutes. I then take the contents of the file I just downloaded, and rebuild my page, so that my widget can update. Most of the time, however, the file is unchanged, and firebug displays a 304 Not Modified header every 5 minutes, as my timer executes $.getScript(). I would like to sense when the file is not modified, so that I don't use up user resources, rebuilding the page for no reason. Is it possible to obtain html headers when using $.getScript()?

• Ruby - encrypted_strings

- by Tom Andersen
A bit of a Ruby newbie here - should be an easy question: I want to use the encrypted_strings gem to create a password encrypted string: (from http://rdoc.info/projects/pluginaweek/encrypted_strings) Question is: Everything works fine, but how come I don't need the password to decrypt the string? Say I want to store the string somewhere for a while,like the session. Is the password also stored with it? (which would seem very strange?). And no, I'm not planning on using 'secret-key' or any similar hack as a password. I am planning on dynamically generating a class variable @@password using a uuid, which I don't store other than in memory, and can change from one running of the program to the next. Symmetric: >> password = 'shhhh' => "shhhh" >> crypted_password = password.encrypt(:symmetric, :password => 'secret_key') => "qSg8vOo6QfU=\n" >> crypted_password.class => String >> crypted_password == 'shhhh' => true >> password = crypted_password.decrypt => "shhhh"

• Silverlight Toolkit ListBoxDragTarget Only One Way

- by Tom Allen
I've got a Silverlight 3 app that has two ListBoxes that I need to be able to drag items between. I've got the toolkit control working so that I can drag from ListBox lbA to ListBox lbB but i then can't drag the item from lbB back to lbA. <toolkit:ListBoxDragDropTarget mswindows:DragDrop.AllowDrop="True"> <ListBox x:Name="lbA" Style="{StaticResource ListBoxStyle}"> <ListBox.ItemTemplate> <DataTemplate> <TextBlock Text="{Binding DisplayMember}"/> </DataTemplate> </ListBox.ItemTemplate> </ListBox> </toolkit:ListBoxDragDropTarget> <toolkit:ListBoxDragDropTarget mswindows:DragDrop.AllowDrop="True"> <ListBox x:Name="lbB" Style="{StaticResource ListBoxStyle}" Width="350"> <ListBox.ItemTemplate> <DataTemplate> <TextBlock Text="{Binding DisplayMember}"/> </DataTemplate> </ListBox.ItemTemplate> </ListBox> </toolkit:ListBoxDragDropTarget> I'm binding lbA to an ObservableCollection of MyObject items which is a parent class for objects MyObjectA and MyObjectB (and there is a mix of ChildObjectA and ChildObjectB items). Is the one way behaviour I'm seeing due to binding to a collection MyObjects or something else i'm missing?

• Java == operator. "Invalid assignment operator"

Hi, I was trying to write a simple method boolean validate(MyObject o) { return o.getPropertyA() == null && o.getPropertyB()==null; } And got a strange error on the == null part. Maybe my Java is rusty after a season in PLSQL. Consider this: Integer i = 4; i ==null; //compile error: Syntax error on token ==. Invalid assignment operator. Integer i2 = 4; if (i==null); //No problem How can this be ? Any explanation ? Im using jdk160_05.
