• Consuming JSON stream into AWS Database on the cheap

  I'm working on a project that needs to consume a JSON stream (approximately 1MB / minute), and parse and insert objects into a database. Amazon's DynamoDB or SimpleDB seem like attractive options for this. Is there a web service that can run a very simple script to eat the data and put it in a database? I could use a worker on Heroku or Elastic Beanstalk, or even pure EC2, but I'd like to find a service that's much cheaper, due to the very low amount of bandwidth and CPU required. (Sorry for the crappy tags. I'm not even sure where to categorize this question.)

• Cannot access new product attributes in grid display

  I added a couple new attribute to my products(a boolean "yes/no" fields). They are variables to enable/disable the price from displaying on the product detail page, and grid view. I managed to get it work on the product info page. But on product grid page I cant seem to access those variable. Specifically, the template i am working with is catalog/product/list.phtml. Ive tried adding them in the xml file like this layout/catalog.xml: <block type="catalog/product_list" name="product_list" template="catalog/product/list.phtml"> <action method="addAttribute"><name>DisplayPrice</name></action> <action method="addAttribute"><name>CustomOrder</name></action> </block> and I am trying to access the attributes like so in catalog/product/list.phtml: <?php echo $_product->getDisplayPriceName()? • How do I fix "malformed line" errors in sources.list?

  I had problems with my movie player. The sound was fine but the picture seemed to hesitate or stick or pause every few seconds so I was looking for some help on how to do this. I tried to install a command in the terminal and got this message: E:Malformed line 68 in source list /etc/apt/sources.list (dist parse) Can someone tell me how to fix this problem. I cannot open the software center or the update manager. The only other option I can think of is to wipe everything out and do a clean install. Thank you.

• How to populate an ontology at runtime?

  I have a configuration file with a lot of data like sensor locations, type, rules for activating devices etc. Basically related to a pervasive system. I plan to design an ontology for this domain. The doubt in my mind is how should I populate the ontology with the information in the configuration file, as the configuration files are going to change every now and then. Earlier I was planning to use XML, so I can just read the configuration file at runtime and create an XML as per the XSD. Do we use the same technique for Ontologies? If yes then what is the format of the populated ontology? Thanks Chan

• Optimising Database Calls

  I have a database that is filled with information for films, which is (in turn) read in to the database from an XML file on a webserver. What happens is the following: Gather/Parse XML and store film info as objects Begin Statement For every film object we found: Check to see if record for film exists in database If no film record, write data for film Commit Statement Currently I just test for the existence of a film using (the very basic): SELECT film_title FROM film WHERE film_id = ? If that returns a row, then the film exists, if not then I need to add it... The only problem is, is that there are many many hundreds of records in the database (lots of films!) and because it has to check for the existence of a film in the database before it can write it, the whole process ends up taking quite a while (about 27 seconds for 210 films) Is there a more efficient method of doing this, or just any suggestions in general? • Should I always be checking every neighbor when building voxel meshes?

  I've been playing around with Unity3d, seeing if I can make a voxel-based engine out of it (a la Castle Story, or Minecraft). I've dynamically built a mesh from a volume of cubes, and now I'm looking into reducing the number of vertices built into each mesh, as right now, I'm "rendering" vertices and triangles for cubes that are fully hidden within the larger voxel volume. The simple solution is to check each of the 6 directions for each cube, and only add the face to the mesh if the neighboring voxel in that direction is "empty". Parsing a voxel volume is BigO(N^3), and checking the 6 neighbors keeps it BigO(7*N^3)-BigO(N^3). The one thing this results in is a lot of redundant calls, as the same voxel will be polled up to 7 times, just to build the mesh. My question, then, is: Is there a way to parse a cubic volume (and find which faces have neighbors) with fewer redundant calls? And perhaps more importantly, does it matter (as BigO complexity is the same in both cases)?

  I'm filling an XML document manually using C# and I need to have <data> as header and </data> as footer for the whole XML file. Is there an easy way to do that ? I know It can be done but I couldn't find a way to do it. Keep in mind that I'm updating the entries so I need to make sure that they always come between the header and the footer. • Excel validation range limits

  When Excel saves a file, it attempts to combine identical Validation settings into a single rule with multiple ranges. This creates one of three issues, depending on the file type you choose to save: When saving as a standard Excel file (Office 2000 BIFF), a maximum of 1024 non-contiguous ranges that can have the same validation setting. When saving as a SpreadsheetML (Office 2002/2003 XML) file, you are limited to the number of non-contiguous ranges that can be represented, comma-delimited in R1C1 format, in 1024 characters. When saving as an Open Office XML (Office 2007 *.xlsx), there is a maximum of 511 non-contiguous ranges that can have the same validation setting. (I don't have Office 2007, I'm using the file converter for Office 2003). Once you bust any of these limits, the remaining ranges with the same Validation settings have their Validation settings wiped. For (1) and (3), Excel warns you that it can't save all of the formatting, but for (2) it does not.

It displays an image based some xml document and an optional parameter "Document" - XML document "RenderingOption" - optional image-rendering ( sharpen, soften ) So: <XMLRenderingWidget Document="xxxxxx"/> The above will render the document once <XMLRenderingWidget Document="xxxxxx" RenderingOption="Sharpen"/> The above will, sometimes render the document once, more oftentimes: Perform the rendering of the document as if no Rendering was set then, re-render the document with the Sharpen option I do the rendering on the PropertyChangedCallback assigned to the property. How do I tell the control to "hey, before doing the rendering, apply the changes on the other properties being set, too" Is this not possible? Should I bundle them up as one property instead?

• Switch between views in Android

  Hi, all I'm writing an Android application with multiple Tabs. The content of each tabs is determined by XMLs on the Internet, and it could be WebView for HTML rendering, GridView for photo displaying, etc. I'm going to delay downloading of those XML until the tab is clicked. Upon clicking the application will download corresponding XML from the Internet, and then choose suitable View for it. Currently I have written a MyViewDelegate and use TabSpec.setContent() to set the spec pointing to MyViewDelegate: spec = tabHost.newTabSpec(tabName[i]); intent = new Intent().setClass(this, HomeActivity.class); spec.setIndicator(title[i]); spec.setContent(new MyViewDelegate(this, tabName[i])); tabHost.addTab(spec); My problem is, after MyViewDelegate is required to draw, how can I switch to WebView/GridView and initialize it? • Monolog conversations in SQL Service Broker 2008

  Hi, I have a scenario in which I need to process(in SQL Server) messages being delivered as .xml files in a folder in real time. I started investigating SQL Service Broker for my queuing needs. Basically, I want the Service Broker to pick up my .xml files and place them in a queue as they arrive in the folder. But, SQL Service Broker does not support "Monolog" conversations, at least not in the current version. It supports only a dialog between an initiator and a target service. I can use MSMQ but then I will have two things to maintain - the .Net Code for file processing in MSMQ and the SQL Server T-SQL stored procs. What options do I have left? Thanks.

• Date format strings in .Net and Java

  I have an application that runs on both C# .Net and Java. Two entirely separate but identical code bases. The problem Im having is formatting date and numbers. For example: A user running the .Net variant is inputting a date and a format string. The 26th of April 1986 is formatted 1986-04-26. The actual date, along with the format string, is serialized to an XML file. Later another user running the Java variant opens said XML file and looks at the date. I want them to look the same. Whats the best approach here? There doesnt seem to be a one-to-one mapping between Java and .Nets format strings. Should I limit the possible formats to a selection I know I can represent fully in both .Net and Java?

I've stripped out some HTML from one of the XML elements, but it's in the format: <p class="x">Some text...</p> <p>Some more text</p> <p>Some final text</p> I want to extract the middle paragraph text, how can I do this? Would a regular expression be the best way? I don't really want to start including external HTML parsing libraries.

• Modify installed SharePoint feature

  I have written a sequential workflow in SharePoint on our development environment. After testing, we decided to deploy this workflow as a feature on the staging environment. We did the following: copied the strongly named assembly to the GAC using gacutil copied feature.xml and workflow.xml to WebServerExtensions/12/templates/features/someFolder installed feature (stsadm command) activated feature (stsadm command) All worked exactly as planned and the workflow behaved correctly. The problem was, we decided to change something in the code (a message was not very self explanatory), so on the development machine we updated the message as requested and rebuilt the project. The problem is, we cannot seem to find a way to correctly get rid of the previous version of this workflow/feature. To deploy the upgrade, we: deactivated and uninstalled the feature (stsadm commands), removed also from GAC. increased the version of the assembly performed steps 1 to 4 from above. When using the workflow we are still getting the first message, we cannot find a way to get the new message to be displayed. What are we missing?

I'm explicitly not referring to typography errors or bad program flow as treated in this question and answers, but to more high-level errors which are not detected by the compiler and do not result in obvious bugs at first run, complete design errors, things which are improbable in C but are likely to be done by newcomers who don't understand the full implications of their code. I also welcome answers pointing out a huge performance decrease where it would not usually be expected. An example of what one of my professors once told me: You have used somewhat too many instances of unneeded inheritance and virtuality. Inheritance makes a design much more complicated (and inefficient because of the RTTI (run-time type inference) subsystem), and it should therefore only be used where it makes sense, e.g. for the actions in the parse table." [I wrote an LR(1) parser generator.] "Because you make intensive use of templates, you practically don't need inheritance."

• Where can I find the gtk-builder-convert script?

  I've built a small GUI app for work that uses some .glade files for pop-up windows. Recently, the ground beneath me was shifted - my environment was upgraded. Newer pyGTK versions require GTKBuilder and .xml files instead of Glade and .glade files and now my poor app is broken. I need to convert the .glade file to the newer .xml file. Problem is Glade-3 is not on our system, and I can't find gtk-builder-convert on the web. I've looked at the Gnome GIT Browser, don't know where to start looking or how to search it. Would anyone be kind enough to point me to the gtk-builder-convert python script?

  I have a HTML5 based page, and I inculded the OpenGraph tags according to it's documentation. Also I checked with Facebook Debug, and it can parse the metadata. But when I use W3C Validator, it reports the OG tags as error: Attribute content not allowed on element meta at this point. <meta property="fb:admins" content="...." /> Attribute content not allowed on element meta at this point. <meta property="og:url" content="http://www...."> They are all in the <head>. I would need my page be "valid" HTML5 and OG tags, as well. Could you help me giving a hint how can it be achieved? UPDATE: The name version also invalid: <meta name='fb:admins' content=''>

• maximum string length quota error consuming WCF webservice from Biztalk.

  I'm getting this error message "The Maximum string content length quota (8192) has been exceeded while reading XML data. This quotea may be increased by changing the MaxStringContentLength property on the XmlDictionaryReaderQuotas object used when creating the XML reader" In the one of my orchestrations that consumes a wcf webservice (stacktrace indicates the receive shape is where the issue is), It is likely that the response is very large. looking at some of the other questions with this error message the solution is to change a WCF bindings setting in the configuration file. However I can't find these configuration settings when I'm using biztalk. They don't seem to be generated anywhere, should I be trying to add them to BTSNTSVc.exe.config. Any suggestions welcome.

• Embed IF text parser in another game?

  Are there any existing interactive fiction text parsing engines that I can embed in another game or application? I'm looking to use something as a library. I can pass it the available objects and verbs from my own side. It will parse the sentences from the user and give me back some sort of structure/AST describing what the user asked for. Then my own code can then act upon that request. I don't need something SIRI level. The simple sentences and actions that current IF games support is fine. But I'm not looking to write a whole text/sentence parser myself. This isn't an If game and I can't write it entirely in an interactive-fiction language like inform 7. Unfortunatly, I can't seem to find any examples of anyone using the text parsing capabilities of these engines without writing the entire game in that engine's language.

• Dynamic data-entry value store

  I'm creating a data-entry application where users are allowed to create the entry schema. My first version of this just created a single table per entry schema with each entry spanning a single or multiple columns (for complex types) with the appropriate data type. This allowed for "fast" querying (on small datasets as I didn't index all columns) and simple synchronization where the data-entry was distributed on several databases. I'm not quite happy with this solution though; the only positive thing is the simplicity... I can only store a fixed number of columns. I need to create indexes on all columns. I need to recreate the table on schema changes. Some of my key design criterias are: Very fast querying (Using a simple domain specific query language) Writes doesn't have to be fast Many concurrent users Schemas will change often Schemas might contain many thousand columns The data-entries might be distributed and needs syncronization. Preferable MySQL and SQLite - Databases like DB2 and Oracle is out of the question. Using .Net/Mono I've been thinking of a couple of possible designs, but none of them seems like a good choice. Solution 1: Union like table containing a Type column and one nullable column per type. This avoids joins, but will definitly use a lot of space. Solution 2: Key/value store. All values are stored as string and converted when needed. Also use a lot of space, and of course, I hate having to convert everything to string. Solution 3: Use an xml database or store values as xml. Without any experience I would think this is quite slow (at least for the relational model unless there is some very good xpath support). I also would like to avoid an xml database as other parts of the application fits better as a relational model, and being able to join the data is helpful. I cannot help to think that someone has solved (some of) this already, but I'm unable to find anything. Not quite sure what to search for either... I know market research is doing something like this for their questionnaires, but there are few open source implementations, and the ones I've found doesn't quite fit the bill. PSPP has much of the logic I'm thinking of; primitive column types, many columns, many rows, fast querying and merging. Too bad it doesn't work against a database.. And of course... I don't need 99% of the provided functionality, but a lot of stuff not included. I'm not sure this is the right place to ask such a design related question, but I hope someone here has some tips, know of any existing work, or can point me to a better place to ask such a question. Ex: "applications/modules/v1/controllers", "applications/modules/v2/controllers" have different set of actions and functionality. I have made "v1" as the default module in "application.ini" file: resources.modules = "" resources.frontController.defaultModule = "v1" resources.frontController.moduleDirectory = APPLICATION_PATH "/modules" resources.frontController.moduleControllerDirectoryName = "controllers" I have written the following in my bootstrap file: $router = $front->getRouter(); $r1 = new Zend_Controller_Router_Route_Regex('api/v1/tags.xml', array('module' => 'v1', 'controller' => 'tags', 'action' => 'index')); $router->addRoute('route1', $r1); Suppose, if this is my url: http://localhost/api/v1/tags.xml then it belongs to version 1 (v1). But i dont want to write many routes like this one, so i want to know how can i track the version from the regex url and dynamically determine the api version to be used (1 or 2).
