  • Problem with Initializing Consts

    - by UdiM
This code, when compiled in xlC 8.0 (on AIX 6.1), produces the wrong result. It should print 12345, but instead prints 804399880. Removing the const in front of result makes the code work correctly. Where is the bug? #include <stdio.h> #include <stdlib.h> #include <string> long int foo(std::string input) { return strtol(input.c_str(), NULL, 0); } void bar() { const long int result = foo("12345"); printf("%u\n", result); } int main() { bar(); return 0; } Compilation command: /usr/vacpp/bin/xlC example.cpp -g

  • How long is a CS degree good for?

    - by Recursion
I came upon a comment on another forum today and one user responding to another suggested that a CS degree is really only good for one through two years at the most, and after that its as if you never had it. Is this really true? is this what employers think? When I did CS I never learned anything new, we learned fundamentals like data structures, algorithms, time complexity, OS fundamentals, language characteristics. Most of this stuff has been around for the past 20 years or so.

  • C++ - Where do i start?

    - by richzilla
Hi All, As a bit of a side project while I'm on my summer break from uni, I've decided to have a look at C++, and get the hang of the basics. I'm by no means a programming novice, I've done web development before with PHP and Ruby, and I've done a fair bit of work with compiled languages (Java / C#). However, C++ seems to be a more significant undertaking. Basically I'm wanting pointers to the best resources for learning C++, as well as some idea as to areas I could do with reading up on (That I might not have come across before). Any help would be hugely appreciated. Thanks

  • Clojure example of the day?

    - by Michiel Borkent
Is there a Clojure example of the day kind of service, like a blog, or Twitter account I can follow? Would be really nice to have a short example every day to enhance Clojure skills and to get inspired to delve deeper into the language. Clojure really lends itself well for short but powerful code.

  • Reading a SquashFS archive

    - by p-static
(SquashFS is a compressed filesystem - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SquashFS) I'm looking for a way to read a SquashFS filesystem from a program. So far, I've know about the in-kernel drivers for it, but I'm sure that a userspace library for it must exist somewhere. Any language would be fine, but C is preferred. Just mounting the filesystem and using it that way is technically possible, but I'd rather avoid that route because the application I'm looking at would involve working with at least a few dozen archives at any given time.

  • Is it possible that an C++ application use CRT 4053 when the manifest uses 762?

    - by Jpa
My application is compiled on a development PC with a manifest 762: However at runtime, on another release PC, the application uses the 4053 version of the file. c:\windows\winsxs\x86_microsoft.vc80.crt_1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b_8.0.50727.4053_x-ww_e6967989\MSVCR80.DLL Somewhere along the execution of my application I get a runtime error pointing to the msvcr80.dll. I suspect that the problem might be caused because the application use a DLL at runtime that was not used during the build. If I check in the WinSxS folder of the release PC I have both 762 and 4053 version of the CRT. Why does the application uses 4053 instead of the one used in the manifest? Thanks.

  • Is there a way I can overlay graphics on top of all windows using C#?

    - by Secrest
I want to create a C# app which rests in the system tray. However, I would like this application to overlay certain graphic elements / drawing on top of the screen above all windows at certain times. So, for example, while my application is running, even though minimized to the tray, it will draw certain shapes on top of the screen regardless of what is there. Is this possible using C#? If not, is there any other language that would have this capability?

  • What's wrong with this "if"?

    - by Gurzo
Hello, I'm currently trying to make an AppleScript which should recognize the selected file in Finder and do the relative command in Terminal. Everything was going fine since I reached the part where it should define the language of the selected file: it just doesn't check the ifs. I checked if it writes fileExtension correctly (via return) and it does. Here is the Gist with the code, any help would be appreciated. Thanks

  • Removing Unused (Unreferenced) Static Global Variable Constants in C++

    - by Synetech inc.
Hi, I have a header file with a few common constants like names and stuff that are automatically included in each project (an example follows). The thing is that they are included in the compiled binary (EXE) whether they are used (referenced) or not. If I use DEFINEs instead, then naturally they are not included if they are not used, but of course consts are better than defines so… I tried Googling it, but the closest thing I could find was a question right here on SO that did not quite help. Matters of i18n aside, how can I keep the ones that are not used out of the binary, while still keeping it easy to use like this? Thanks. //COMMON.H: static const CString s_Company _T("Acme inc."); //etc. static const CString s_Digits _T("0123456789"); //TEST.CPP: #include common.h int main() { AfxMessageBox(s_Company); } //s_Company should be in the final EXE, but s_Digits should not be, but is
