• MacPorts: violation of the ports-filesystem hierarchy in the destroot phase

  I'm in the process of developing a Portfile for my application and I'm running into problems during the destroot phase. According to the MacPorts guide, the destroot phase executes the following command: make install DESTDIR=${destroot} I think I may be misunderstanding how this is supposed to work in the Makefile. My application is very simple and the install rule only needs to copy a couple of directories to the DESTDIR so it is specified as follows: install: cp -R bin $(DESTDIR)/bin cp -R lib $(DESTDIR)/lib cp -R cfg $(DESTDIR)/cfg However, when I try to do a MacPort installation of my application, I get the following warnings: ---> Staging test into destroot Warning: violation by /bin Warning: violation by /lib Warning: violation by /cfg Warning: test violates the layout of the ports-filesystems! How do I fix this? Am I misunderstanding how the DESTDIR variable is used in the install rule or missing something altogether?

  Here's the scenario. I made a "dev" branch off the "master" branch and made a few new commits. Some of those changes are going to only be relevant to my local development machine. For example I changed a URL variable to point to a local apache server instead of the real URL that's posted online (I did this for speed during the testing phase). Now I'd like to incorporate my changes from the dev branch into the master branch but NOT those changes which only make sense in my local environment. I'd envisioned something like a merge --patch which would allow me to choose the changes I want to merge line by line. Alternatively maybe I could checkout the "master" branch, but keep the files in my working directory as they were in the "dev" branch, then do a git add --patch. Would that work?

• WCF server component getting outdated user name

She is able to login to her Windows box fine with her new user name, but when she tries to run the client side of our application, the server gets her old user name in the "userName" variable in the code above, which messes up our authentication (since her old user name is no longer in our database). Another piece of info: This only happens when she connects to the server code on the Production server. We have the same server code running on a QA server, and it does not have this issue (the QA server code gets her correct (new) user name) Any ideas what could be going on?

  If I want a list initialized to 5 zeroes, that's very nice and easy: [0] * 5 However if I change my code to put a more complicated data structure, like a list of zeroes: [[0]] * 5 will not work as intended, since it'll be 10 copies of the same list. I have to do: [[0] for i in xrange(5)] that feels bulky and uses a variable so sometimes I even do: [[0] for _ in " "] But then if i want a list of lists of zeros it gets uglier: [[[0] for _ in " "] for _ in " "] all this instead of what I want to do: [[[0]]*5]*5 Has anyone found an elegant way to deal with this "problem"?

  Maybe a closure is my solution? Not exactly sure how to pull it off though. Basically I have a main container that holds different pages depending on what tab they choose. For performance I want to cache the page into global vars so I need to know what tab is active to figure out which global var to assign the HTML to.

• Problems deploying Sinatra app to staging environment

  I have a small Sinatra app with both a staging and production environment on a single server with running Nginx. To deploy I am using Capistrano and capistrano-ext to easily deploy to different locations. The problem that the staging environment always runs with the production configuration specified within the app.rb file. configure :staging do # staging settings set :foo, "bar" end configure :production do # prod settings set :foo, "rab" end I have come to the conclusion that the capistrano :environment variable within the deploy.rb file doesn't config Sinatra in any way. • Why did I get a 400 Bad Request when getting a page with PHP Curl?

  Hi, I was trying to access a page using curl. I could access it perfectly using the browser and using "static" strings as the URL, like: $url = "http://www.example.com/?q=1234" But when I tried to access the page using a variable in the URL string like: $url = "http://www.example.com/?q=$param" I got a 400 error code. I checked out on the web and found some comments here in this stackoverflow thread: Then, just for curiosity I did the following: $url = "http://www.example.com/?q=" . trim($param); and it worked! And no, $param did NOT contain any spaces. To me, it seems that it can be some encoding error, but I really can't find an explanation for it. Does anyone here in stackoverflow know what it can possibly be? Thanks in advance :)

Folder structure: Folder1/analysis.m Folder1/meas_dynamic_123.dcm My script (analysis.m) begins as follows: target =''; <== here should go the full path to the file + filename example: /Volumes/Data/Folder1/meas_dynamic_123.m txt = dir(target); // etc So I'm wondering if there is a way of when running analysis.m it will: automatically search the folder it's in, grab the full path + filename of file containing string dynamic in the name, insert its full path + name into target variable continue running the script Does anyone have any pointers on how to achieve this? • How Do Sockets Work in C?

  I am a bit confused about socket programming in C. You create a socket, bind it to an interface and an IP address and get it to listen. I found a couple of web resources on that, and understood it fine. In particular, I found an article Network programming under Unix systems to be very informative. What confuses me is the timing of data arriving on the socket. How can you tell when packets arrive, and how big the packet is, do you have to do all the heavy lifting yourself? My basic assumption here is that packets can be of variable length, so once binary data starts appearing down the socket, how do you begin to construct packets from that?

For example, a return of my variable px will be something like -88.4029.032940598. vx is the x vector and mult is the distance of the line plus distance to calculate the point. • Java Null Pointer Exception :-(

  I've got a Null Pointer Exception in my main that just won't go away and I'm totally out of ideas. The error is on the line "Board[x][y].color = 2;" in which Board is a public, static array of piece objects that contain instance variables like the one "color" that is being set to 2 in the above statement. Pieces is not static - that is there are many different copies of pieces, each with its own data, but only one board. The array has been initialized and defined as both public Piece[][] Board = new Piece[8][8] and public static Piece[][] Board = new Piece[8][8], but no matter how I mess around with it (getting rid of static, putting the variable in another object, etc.), I can't seem to get the error to go away. Help?

  I was trying to understand how webkit parses urls, and I'm having a hard time making heads or tails of this: Vector<char, 4096> buffer(fragmentEnd * 3 + 1); This line is on line 1214 (you can see it here: http://trac.webkit.org/browser/trunk/WebCore/platform/KURL.cpp#L1214). I get that it's making a vector of type char, with each entry being an array of char 4096 bytes large, but I don't get the buffer(fragmentEnd * 3 + 1) part. I think that it confuses me most b/c I can't find where the buffer variable is instantiated anywhere (shouldn't it be something more like Vector<char, 4096> buffer = new Vector<char, 4096>(...)?   Hi, Recently I found a C library that I want to use in my C++ project. This code is configured with global variables and writes it's output to memory pointed by static pointers. When I execute my project I would like 2 instances of the C program to run: one with configuration A and one with configuration B. I can't afford to run my program twice, so I think there are 2 options: Make a C++ wrapper: The problem here is that the wrapper-class should contain all global/static variables the C library has. Since the functions in the C library use those variables I will have to create very big argument-lists for those functions. Copy-paste the C library: Here I'll have to adapt the name of every function and every variable inside the C library. Which one is the fastest solution? Are there other possibilities to run 2 instances of the same C source? Thanks, Max

I understand that this is being somehow converted to PHP arrays when a PHP script examines the $_POST variable. My questions about this: What is the mechanism behind? At which point this names that merely contain brackets are converted to arrays? Is this a feature of the HTPP protocol? Of web servers? Of the PHP language? Continuing the previous question, is this a commonly used hack or a normal programming tool? What are (all) the rules of using brackets in input field names?   In almost all of the books I read and examples I go through I see pointers initialized this way. Say that I have a class variable NSString *myString that I want to initialize. I will almost always see that done this way: -(id)init { if (self = [super init]) { NSString *tempString = [[NSString alloc] init]; myString = tempString; [tempString release]; } return self; } Why can't I just do the following? -(id)init { if (self = [super init]) { myString = [[NSString alloc] init]; } return self; } I don't see why the extra tempString is ever needed in the first place, but I could be missing something here with memory management. Is the way I want to do things acceptable or will it cause some kind of leak? I have read the Memory Management Guide on developer.apple.com and unless I am just missing something, I don't see the difference.

• Preventing entire JOINed MYSQL query from failing when one field is missing within a WHERE clause

  I am doing a couple of joins with a variable in the WHERE clause. I'm not sure if I am doing everything as efficiently as I could, or even using the best practices but my issue is that half my tables have data for when tableC.type=500, and the other half don't resulting in the entire query failing. SELECT tableA.value1 , tableB.value2, tableC.value3 FROM tableA JOIN tableB ON tableB.id=tableA.id JOIN tableC ON tableC.id=tableB.id WHERE tableA.category=$var && tableC.type=500; What I would like to happen is to still get tableA.value1 and tableB.value2 even if there is no field in tableC with a type=500. any thoughts? i'm totally stumped as how to approach this...

• IDisposable, does it really matter

  Coming from C/C++ a long time ago I still have a habit of ensuring that all resources are cleaned up correctly. I always ensure Dispose is called on IDisposable classes and implement Dispose patterns in my classes containing disposable objects. However, in my environment I'm more or less the only one doing this. Others just don't understand what I'm doing and think my code is more difficult to understand. They just create database connections, open streams etc without calling Close or Dispose. Sometimes they set a local or member variable to "Nothing" at the end of a method (guess their background). My problem is that their code works just as well as mine. Code that over time creates thousands of database connection objects just works. So, ignoring any arguments about code correctness, following guidelines etc, does IDiposable really matter? Has anyone actually ran out of resources from not Disposing objects?
