  • How to use db4o IObjectContainer in a web application ? (Container lifetime ?)

    I am evaluating db4o for persistence for a ASP .NET MVC project. I am wondering how I should use the IObjectContainer in a web context with regards to object lifetime. As I see it, I can do one of the following: Create the IObjectContainer at application startup and keep the same instance for the entire application lifetime. Create one IObjectContainer per request. Start a server, and get a client IObjectContainer for each database interaction. What are the implications of these options, in terms of performance and concurrency ? Since the database is locked when an IObjectContainer is opened, I am pretty sure that option 2) would get me some problems with concurrency - would this also be the case for option 1 ? As I understand it, if I retrieve an object from an IObjectContainer, it must be saved by the same IObjectContainer instance - in order for db4o to identify it as being the same object. Therefore, If I choose option 3), I would have to retrieve the original object, make the necessary changes (copy data from a modified object), and then store it using the same IObjectContainer. Is this true ?

  • Grabbing Data From Controls In Code Behind

    Hopefully this is a pretty simple question for someone to answer. I have a drop down list control that I need to pull the value from in the code behind of the page, modify it and redisplay it. The modifying and redisplaying I've got no problem with, it's grabing the value from the drop down control. Examples in C# would be appreciated as this web app I've been handed is already coded that way. I'm pretty new to .Net so be gentle and I already did some searching via Google and a little bit on the site here, but couldn't find anything that stood out as being the direction to go in to do this.

  • Is passing a Command object/Reader to a function a good idea?

    I've been getting some inexplicable errors (running out of connections from the connection pool) with MySql database with .Net 4 (C#). Till now all my attempts at finding a reason for this have been in vain. Now I also have a situation in which a lock on a table is not cleared for a long time even though all I have been doing is read operations from it. My code looks okay (I've put all readers and connections in using blocks). The only anomaly I have is that I've been passing MySqlCommand and MySqlDataReader objects as parameters to functions who work with them. That doesn't seem like a bad idea for me because it avoids some repetition (DRY!). But since I can't find any other explanation I have to suspect that this is causing the problem. What do you think?

    Can someone enlighthen me with regards to Linq please? I have a dataset that is populated via a SQL Stored Procedure, the format of which is below: Country | Brand | Variant | 2004 | 2005 | 2006 | 2007 | 2008 The number of rows varies between 50 and several thousand. What I'm trying to do is use Linq to interrogate the dataset (there will be several Linq queries based on user options), but a simple example would be to SUM the year columns based on Brand.     Hi (this is a common problem with few twists). We are on IIS 6, without ISAPI_Rewrite with .net 4 and mvc 2 app. We would like to 301 forward bunch of old urls to matching new urls. (We are deploying a new site and google index will still point to old urls, and we need to map those urls to new urls) a) Is there a way to do this through IIS (but without ISAPI_Rewrite) and how? b) Is there a way to do this through the application code and how?     I have a reference to a web service on a remote server like such... http://10.5.1.121/PersonifyWebServicePPROD/UniversalWebService/default.wsdl The moment I invoke the web service and view its URL property it looks like... http://localhost/PersonifyWebServicePPROD/UniversalWebService/default.asmx Can anyone tell me why it's overwriting the remote server with localhost? The vendor that provided the web service said I have to reference the wsdl and not the asmx in order for it to work. I've tried running it both within IIS and as a web app on the filesystem and neither scenario work. This is on the .Net 3.5 framework.

My question is; are there any performance drawbacks or pitfalls I should watch out for when using the lambda method for this? I prefer it, as it's certainly more concise, but I do not want to sacrifice performance to use it. Thanks.

  • What would you choose for your project between .NET and Java at this point in time ?

    You are just starting a new project and you have these two technologies to choose from, Java and .NET. The project you are working doesn't involve having features that would make it easy to choose between the two technologies (e.g. .NET has this that I need and Java does not) and both of them should work just fine for you (though you only need one of course). Take into account: Performance Tools available (even 3rd party tools) Cross platform compatibility Libraries (especially 3rd party libraries) Cost (Oracle seems to try and monetize Java) Development process (Easiest/Fastest) Also keep in mind that Linux is not your main platform but you would like to port your project to Linux/MacOs as well. You should definitely keep in mind the trouble that has been revolving around Oracle and the Java community and the limitations of Mono and Java as well. It would be much appreciated if people with experience in both can give an overview and their own subjective view about which they would choose and why.

  • dotNet Templated, Repeating, Databound ServerControl: Counting the templates OnDataBind?

    I have a server control that wraps an underlying class which manages a number of indexes to track where it is in a dataset (ie: RenderedRecordCount, ErroredRecordCount, NewRecordCount, etc.). I've got the server control rendering great, but OnDataBinding I'm having an issue as to seems to happen after CreateChildControls and before Render (both of which properly manage the iteration of the underlying indexes). While I'm somewhat familiar with the ASP.NET page lifecycle, this one seems to be beyond me at the moment. So... how do I hook into the iterative process OnDataBinding uses so I can manage the underlying indexes? Will I have to iterate over the ITemplates myself, managing the indexes as I go or is there an easier solution? Also... I implemented the iteration of the underlying indexes during CreateChildControls originally in the belief that was the proper place to hook in for events like OnDataBinding (thining it was done as the controls were being .Add'd). Now it seems that this may actually be unnecessary. So I guess the secondary question is: What happens during CreateChildControls? Are the unadulterated (read: with <%-tags in place) controls added to the .Controls collection without any other processing?

  • .NET 3.5 SP1 Installer hang at around 80%

    Hi, I was trying to install .NET 3.5 SP1 to one of our production machines with Windows 2003 SP2. However, the installer just hang at around 80% with message "Setup is loading installation components, This may take a minute or two". In fact it's been like that for 30mins already and using 0% CPU. I disabled the anti-virus software and then applied the windows installer 4.5 update but no luck, the installer still hangs. Anyone had this problem before?

    I wondered how certain .NET hosting providers can safely grant full trust to their customers? Doesn't this open up everybody who is hosting with that company to potential safety issues? Or is there a way to safely restrict each customer, despite giving full trust, to "their" space without giving them the abiliy to bring down the system or spy on other customers?

    We have a number of .NET4 RC ASP.NET MVC2 RTM web applications running on a Windows 2008 R2 server. All behave very well except one that we regularly find running at 99% CPU. It is the most complex of the applications, but is not doing anything extraordinary. It relies on ASP.NET Cache quite heavily, but we have limited the amount of memory it is allowed to use. Does this sound like an issue with the environment? Rich

I have the user control added but now I'm trying to find the control so I can access a couple properties off of it and I can't find the control for the life of me. Looking inside page source code I see that the following div is outside forms tag: <div class="ui-widget-overlay" style="z-index: 1001; width: 1280px; height: 65089px;" jQuery1267345392312="20"/> If I set modal to false, the error doesn't happen. I think the problem is that the div working as modal is outside the form. What do you think?

  • C# DotNetNuke Module: GridVIew AutoGenerateEditButton is skipping over a field on update.

    I have a GridView with an automatically generated Edit button. I wanted some customized behavior for the Image column, since I wanted it to be a drop down list of items as opposed to a simple input field, and I also wanted some nice "fallback" in case the value in the database didn't actually exist in the drop down list. With the code I have done so far, I have gotten the behavior I desire out of the Image field. The problem is that when i attempt to update that particular field, I get an error spit out back at me that it can't find a method to update the form with: ObjectDataSource 'objDataSource' could not find a non-generic method 'UpdateDiscovery' that has parameters: ModuleId, Visible, Position, Title, Link, ItemId. That's not good, because I DO have an UpdateDiscovery method. However, between Title and Link, there is supposed to be another param that belongs to the Image field, and it's not being passed. I realize that it's probably the update button doesn't know to pass that field, since it's a TemplateField and not a BoundField, and when I use Bind('image') as the selected value for the drop down list, it seems to update fine...but only as long as the field in the database when I try and edit the row actually exists, otherwise it bombs out and gives me an error about the value not existing in the drop down list.
