  • In SQL, a Join is actually an Intersection? And it is also a linkage or a "Sideway Union"?

    - by Jian Lin
    I always thought of a Join in SQL as some kind of linkage between two tables. For example, select e.name, d.name from employees e, departments d where employees.deptID = departments.deptID In this case, it is linking two tables, to show each employee with a department name instead of a department ID. And kind of like a "linkage" or "Union" sideway". But, after learning about inner join vs outer join, it shows that a Join (Inner join) is actually an intersection. For example, when one table has the ID 1, 2, 7, 8, while another table has the ID 7 and 8 only, the way we get the intersection is: select * from t1, t2 where t1.ID = t2.ID to get the two records of "7 and 8". So it is actually an intersection. So we have the "Intersection" of 2 tables. Compare this with the "Union" operation on 2 tables. Can a Join be thought of as an "Intersection"? But what about the "linking" or "sideway union" aspect of it?

  • problem with logout script in php

    - by user225269
    I'm a beginner in php, and I am trying to create a login and logout. But I am having problems in logging out. My logout just calls for the login form which is this: <? session_start(); session_destroy(); ?> <table width="300" border="0" align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="1" bgcolor="#CCCCCC"> <tr> <form name="form1" method="post" action="checklogin.php"> <td> <table width="100%" border="0" cellpadding="3" cellspacing="1" bgcolor="#FFFFFF"> <tr> <td colspan="3"><strong>Member Login </strong></td> </tr> <tr> <td width="78">Username</td> <td width="6">:</td> <td width="294"><input name="myusername" type="text" id="myusername"></td> </tr> <tr> <td>Password</td> <td>:</td> <td><input name="mypassword" type="text" id="mypassword"></td> </tr> <tr> <td>&nbsp;</td> <td>&nbsp;</td> <td><input type="submit" name="Submit" value="Login"></td> </tr> </table> </td> </form> </tr> </table> My problem is, when I try to press the back button in the browser. Whoever user is using it can still access what is not supposed to be accessed when a user hasn't logged in. Do I need to add a code on the user page? I have this code on the user page: <? session_start(); if(!session_is_registered(myusername)){ header("location:main_login.php"); } ?> What can you recommend that I would do so that a script will prompt to enter the username and password again when a user clicks on the back button.

  • Use count or have a field that tallies?

    - by Dan LaManna
    Fairly simple concept, making an extremely basic message board system and I want users to have a post count. Now I was debating on whether or not to have a tally in their row that is added each time a post by them is created, or subtracted by one each time a post of theirs is deleted. However I'm sure that performing a count query when the post count is requested would be more accurate due to unforseen circumstances (say a thread gets deleted and it doesn't lower their tally properly), however this seems like it would be less efficient to run a query EVERY time their post count is loaded, especially in the case of them having 10 posts on the same page and it lists their post count each post. Thoughts/Advice? Thanks

  • check for several conditions when a user logs in

    - by paul
    I would like to accomplish the following: If a username or password field is null, notify the user. If user name already exists, do not insert into the database and notify user to create a different name. if the username is unique and password is not null, return the username to the user. As of now it always returns "Please enter a different user name." I believe the issue has to do with the database query but I am not sure. If anyone can have a look and see if I am making an error, I greatly appreciate it, thanks. if ($userName or $userPassword = null) { echo "Please enter a user name and password or return to the homepage."; } elseif (mysql_num_rows(mysql_query("SELECT count(userName) FROM logininfo WHERE userName = '$userName'")) ==1) { echo "Please enter a different user name."; } elseif ($userName and $userPassword != null) { echo "Your login name is: $userName"; }

  • How do I assign a rotating category to database entries in the order the records come in?

    - by Stomped
    I have a table which gets entries from a website, and as those entries go into the database, they need to be assigned the next category on a list of categories that may be changed at any time. Because of this reason I can't do something simple like for mapping the first category of 5 to IDs 1, 6, 11, 16. I've considered reading in the list of currently possibly categories, and checking the value of the last one inserted, and then giving the new record the next category, but I imagine if two requests come in at the same moment, I could potentially assign them both the same category rather then in sequence. So, my current round of thinking is the following: lock the tables ( categories and records ) insert the newest row into records get the newest row's ID select the row previous to the insertl ( by using order by auto_inc_name desc 0, 1 ) take the previous row's category, and grab the next one from the cat list update the new inserted row unlock the table I'm not 100% sure this will work right, and there's possibly a much easier way to do it, so I'm asking: A. Will this work as I described in the original problem? B. Do you have a better/easier way to do this? Thanks ~

  • where to store information like gender and year of birth?

    - by fayer
    i have users and i need them to specify a gender (male, female) and year of birth (1930, 1931...1999, 2000). i wonder where i should store these values: in the database? in php file? if i store them in the database i have to manually create all entries first. but a good thing is that the user table will have constraints so the gender field will always be male or female, it cannot be something else. if i store them in the php file (eg. as html) then i can easily add/remove values. but a con is that i dont have the constraints in database, so another value could be stored as gender by mistake, even though i could add validation in php backend so even if someone hacked the html it is not stored unless it's either male or female. what is best practice to do this? thanks

  • Selecting rows distinctively

    - by noway
    Lets assume my database table structure is something like | items | weight | |============|==========| | item_1 | 50 | | item_2 | 90 | | item_2 | 45 | | item_2 | 60 | | item_3 | 40 | In the select statement, I want to show an item only for once with the highest weight also ordered by height. So the result should be : | items | weight | |============|==========| | item_2 | 90 | | item_1 | 50 | | item_3 | 40 | I tried something like SELECT DISTINCT items, weight FROM mytable ORDER BY weight DESC but it didn't work because the results are actually distinct. How can I make that selection?

  • PHP classes, parse syntax errors when using 'var' to declare variables

    - by jon
    I am a C# guy trying to translate some of my OOP understanding over to php. I'm trying to make my first class object, and are hitting a few hitches. Here is the beginning of the class: <?php require("Database/UserDB.php"); class User { private var $uid; private var $username; private var $password; private var $realname; private var $email; private var $address; private var $phone; private var $projectArray; public function _construct($username) { $userArray = UserDB::GetUserArray($username); $uid = $userArray['uid']; $username = $userArray['username']; $realname = $userArray['realname']; $email = $userArray['email']; $phone = $userArray['phone']; $i = 1; $projectArray = UserDB::GetUserProjects($this->GetID()); while($projectArray[$i] != null) { $projectArray[$i] = new Project($projectArray[$i]); } UserDB.php is where I have all my static functions interacting with the Database for this User Class. I am getting errors using when I use var, and I'm getting confused. I know I don't HAVE to use var, or declare the variables at all, but I feel it is a better practice to do so. the error is "unexpected T_VAR, expecting T_VARIABLE" When I simply remove var from the declarations it works. Why is this?

  • How do I choose what and when to cache data with ob_start rather than query the database?

    - by Tim Santeford
    I have a home page that has several independent dynamic parts. The parts consist of a list of recent news from the company, a site statistics panel, and the online status of certain employees. The recent news changes monthly, site statistics change daily, and online statuses change on a per minute bases. I would like to cache these panels so that the db is not hit on every page load. Is using ob_start() then ob_get_contents() to cache these parts to a file the correct way to do this or is there a better method in PHP5 for doing this? In asking this question I'm trying to answer these additional questions: How can I determine the correct approach for caching this data without doing extensive benchmarking? Does it make sense to cache these parts in different files and then join them together per requests or should I re-query the data and cache once per minute? I'm looking for a rule of thumb for planning pages and for situations where doing testing is not cost effective (The client is not paying enough for it I mean). Thanks!

  • Converting SQL with subselect in select to HQL

Also, I'd like to sort on the subselect alias -- is this possible? SQL (subselect): SELECT q.title, q.author_id, (SELECT IFNULL(SUM(IF(vote_up=true,1,-1)), 0) FROM vote WHERE question_id = q.id) AS votecount FROM question q ORDER BY votecount DESC HQL (not working) SELECT q, (SELECT COALESCE(SUM(IF(v.voteUp=true,1,-1)), 0) FROM Vote v WHERE v.question = q) AS votecount FROM Question AS q LEFT JOIN q.author u LEFT JOIN u.blockedUsers ub WHERE q.dateCreated BETWEEN :week AND :now AND u.id NOT IN ( SELECT ub.blocked FROM UserBlock AS ub WHERE ub.blocker =:loggedInUser ) AND (u.blockedUsers IS EMPTY OR ub.blocked !=:loggedInUser) ORDER BY votecount DESC
