• MySQL: SELECT a Winner, returning their rank

  Earlier I asked this question, which basically asked how to list 10 winners in a table with many winners, according to their points. This was answered. Now I'm looking to search for a given winner X in the table, and find out what position he is in, when the table is ordered by points. For example, if this is the table: Winners: NAME:____|__POINTS: Winner1 | 1241 Winner2 | 1199 Sally | 1000 Winner4 | 900 Winner5 | 889 Winner6 | 700 Winner7 | 667 Jacob | 623 Winner9 | 622 Winner10 | 605 Winner11 | 600 Winner12 | 586 Thomas | 455 Pamela | 434 Winner15 | 411 Winner16 | 410 These are possible inputs and outputs for what I want to do: Query: "Sally", "Winner12", "Pamela", "Jacob" Output: 3 12 14 623 How can I do this? • Is it worth caching a Dictionary for foreign key values in ASP.net?

  I have a Dictionary<int, string> cached (for 20 minutes) that has ~120 ID/Name pairs for a reference table. I iterate over this collection when populating dropdown lists and I'm pretty sure this is faster than querying the DB for the full list each time. My question is more about if it makes sense to use this cached dictionary when displaying records that have a foreign key into this reference table. Say this cached reference table is a EmployeeType table. If I were to query and display a list of employee names and types should I query for EmployeeName and EmployeeTypeID and use my cached dictionary to grab the EmployeeTypeIDs name as each record is displayed or is it faster to just have the DB grab the EmployeeName and JOIN to get the EmployeeType string bypassing the cached Dictionary all together. I know both will work but I'm interested in what will perform the fastest. Thanks for any help.

  I need to design a table for daily sales of pharmaceutical products. There are hundreds of types of products available {Name, code}. Thousands of sales-persons are employed to sell those products{name, code}. They collect products from different depots{name, code}. They work in different Areas - Zones - Markets - Outlets, etc. {All have names and codes} Each product has various types of prices {Production Price, Trade Price, Business Price, Discount Price, etc.}. And, sales-persons are free to choose from those combination to estimate the sales price. The problem is, daily sales requires huge amount of data-entry. Within couple of years there may be gigabytes of data (if not terabytes). If I need to show daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly and yearly sales reports there will be various types of sql queries I shall need. This is my initial design: Product {ID, Code, Name, IsActive} ProductXYZPriceHistory {ID, ProductID, Date, EffectDate, Price, IsCurrent} SalesPerson {ID, Code, Name, JoinDate, and so on..., IsActive} SalesPersonSalesAraeaHistory {ID, SalesPersonID, SalesAreaID, IsCurrent} Depot {ID, Code, Name, IsActive} Outlet {ID, Code, Name, AreaID, IsActive} AreaHierarchy {ID, Code, Name, PrentID, AreaLevel, IsActive} DailySales {ID, ProductID, SalesPersonID, OutletID, Date, PriceID, SalesPrice, Discount, etc...} Now, apart from indexing, how can I normalize my DailySales table to have a fine grained design that I shall not need to change for years to come? Please show me a sample design of only the DailySales data-entry table (from which all types of reports would be queried) on the basis of above information. I don't need a detailed design advice. I just need an advice regarding only the DailySales table. Is there any way to break this particular table to achieve granularity?

  Hi, I have a complex data structure, which I boiled down in a dbml file with one class and 6 one-to-many relations. This data must also be read via xml. The xml structure is something like: <table id=1> <column 1></column 1> <column n></column n> <m-n table x> <column 1></column 1> </m-n table x> </table> where the tag <m-n table x> is one of the six related tables. The idea is to generate an xsd based upon the dbml, which I can use to create and validate a xml. This xml can hopefully deserialized into the dbml classes. The question is: Can this be done? If so, how do I generate the xsd. I use a sql server express 2008 r2 as backend. Thanks in advance for your time!

  Hi, I'm trying to query a set of buldings listed on a table, these buildings are linked with tags. I'm able to do it, but my problem is how limit the number of tags to see: table buildings id building_name style 1 Pompidou bla 2 Alcatraz bla 3 etc. etc. table tags // they can be 50 or more per building id tag_name 1 minimal 2 gothic 3 classical 4 modern 5 etc. table buildings_tags id building_id tag_id I though to do something like this to retrieve the list, but this isn't compplete: SELECT DISTINCT(tag), bulding_name FROM buldings INNER JOIN buildings_tags ON buildings.id = buildings_tags.building_id INNER JOIN tags ON tags.id = buildings_tags.tag_id LIMIT 0, 20 // result building tag Pompidou great Pompidou france Pompidou paris Pompidou industrial Pompidou renzo piano <= How to stop at the 5th result? • Post method in Servlet is not being called again after being executed once

  I am implementing a database based web application using servlets. Now, when I input a parameter using a form in the jsp page, it redirects it to a servlet which subsequently adds the value to the database (the servlet creates a new table if the table doesn't already exist). The creation of the table and the addition of value works fine if the table doesn't already exists. Once it is created however and the parameter is inputted again in the form, the submit button no longer redirects it to the servlet. Nor is the value added to the database. Kindly advise me as to where I am going wrong.   If I were to extricate my current membership provider from my solution, i.e. as a dll and expose it as a web service with it's own db, how would I model the relationships with regards to SOA design. For example I have a table: USER id, name, lastname, username, password, role. and table PRODUCT id, name, price, createdate, userid the foreign key being userid to table user. How would I model the relationship and/or query the db. If I wanted to get all products that were uploaded today for example, before I would query: SELECT u.name, u.lastname, u.username, p.* FROM PRODUCT p INNER JOIN USER u ON p.userid = u.id WHERE createdate = '05/05/2010' Now that I don't have the table within the database how would I perform this query?   I need to check if a row exists in a database; however, I am trying to find the way to do this that offers the best performance. This is best summarised with an example. Let's assume I have the following table: dbo.Person( FirstName varchar(50), LastName varchar(50), Company varchar(50) ) Assume this table has millions of rows, however ONLY the column Company has an index. I want to find out if a particular combination of FirstName, LastName and Company exists. I know I can do this: IF EXISTS(select 1 from dbo.Person where FirstName = @FirstName and LastName = @LastName and Company = @Company) Begin .... End However, unless I'm mistaken, that will do a full table scan. What I'd really like it to do is a query where it utilises the index. With the table above, I know that the following query will have great performance, since it uses the index: Select * from dbo.Person where Company = @Company Is there anyway to make the search only on that subset of data? e.g. something like this: select * from ( Select * from dbo.Person where Company = @Company ) where FirstName = @FirstName and LastName = @LastName That way, it would only be doing a table scan on a much narrower collection of data. I know the query above won't work, but is there a query that would? Oh, and I am unable to create temporary tables, as the user will only have read access.

  I have a table with one id (autonumber) field and 50 other fields. The table is normalized, these are 50 material properties etc. I want to copy a record from this table into the same table - only the autoincrement id will be different. The query I am using now is INSERT INTO tableName (field1,field2,....field50) SELECT field1,field2,....field50 from tableName WHERE autoid=1234; Note that I have to type in ALL the 50 field names, twice! Is there any way to shorten this query so I don't have to type all of them? Thanks.

• MySQL Query That Can Pull the Data I am Seeking?

  On the project I am working on, I am stuck with the table structure from Hades. Two things to keep in mind: I can't change the table structure right now. I'm stuck with it for the time being. The queries are dynamically generated and not hard coded. So, while I am asking for a query that can pull this data, what I am really working toward is an algorithm that will generate the query I need. Hopefully, I can explain the problem without making your eyes glaze over and your brain implode. We have an instance table that looks (simplified) along these lines: Instances InstanceID active 1 Y 2 Y 3 Y 4 N 5 Y 6 Y Then, there are multiple data tables along these lines: Table1 InstanceID field1 reference_field2 1 John 5 2 Sally NULL 3 Fred 6 4 Joe NULL Table2 InstanceID field3 5 1 6 1 Table3 InstanceID fieldID field4 5 1 Howard 5 2 James 6 2 Betty Please note that reference_field2 in Table1 contains a reference to another instance. Field3 in Table2 is a bit more complicated. It contains a fieldID for Table 3. What I need is a query that will get me a list as follows: InstanceID field1 field4 1 John Howard 2 Sally 3 Fred The problem is, in the query I currently have, I do not get Fred because there is no entry in Table3 for fieldID 1 and InstanceID 6. So, the very best list I have been able to get thus far is InstanceID field1 field4 1 John Howard 2 Sally In essence, if there is an entry in Table1 for Field 2, and there is not an entry in Table 3 that has the instanceID contained in field2 and the field ID contained in field3, I don't get the data from field1. I have looked at joins till I'm blue in the face, and I can't see a way to handle the case when table3 has no entry.

  I am new to iphone development. I have parsed a youtube file and displaying its contents with the image in the table view. But the scrolling has become slower because of displaying image.So i want to display the image as the lazy tables program from apple docs.Since they have used navigation based application , their rootviewcontroller loads first and then the delegate class call the parsing ,and when they reload the table view, the contents are displayed. The data array count shows 25. I am using a view controller to display the tables on the present modal view, more over when i run my application, first delegate methods call the parsing. So when i click the youtube icon in my landing page it navigates to table view. So by this time data array count shows 0. I have created table view in interface builder and set the outlets to the file owner properly. Please help me out. I want to increasing the scrolling performance. Thanks.

  What is the best way to modify the latest added row without using a temporary table. E.g. the table structure is id | text | date My current approach would be an insert with the postgresql specific command "returning id" so that I can update the table afterwards with update myTable set date='2013-11-11' where id = lastRow However I have the feeling that postgresql is not simply using the last row but is iterating through millions of entries until "id = lastRow" is found. How can i directly access the last added row?

I want to write an if statement within that sql so that when the item_name from temp_quotation does not match the name from item, it displays not found in the place of item_name.   I have an application where I have a generic object (table) called Hull. Each hull in the table is unique. I have another object that has three hulls, but they are specifically the Port_Hull, Center_Hull and Starboard_Hull. Rather than create a One to Many relationship, I was trying to create a one to one relationship for each one, but this results in numerous errors unless I make the relationship from Hull to Vessel one to many (which it is not). Any idea how I go about this, or should I abandon the concept and make the vessel to hull relationship one to many and deal with lists that always have three entries? p.s. Using uniqueidentifiers as many users can be adding records while disconnected. Hull Table HullID uniqueidentifier (primary key) plus bunch of hull data fields Vessel Table VesselID uniqueidentifier (primary key) MainHullID uniqueidentifier (tried as key and non-key) PortHullID uniqueidentifier StarboardHullID uniqueidentifier plus bunch of Vessel data fields

But, when I go to look at each table (with tbl_cursor), it always picks up the tables in the database 'master'.   Am trying to read in data from an xml file but using javascript which is embedded into my asp.net|vb code. I am new to asp.net but coming from a programming background. so I declared the xml objects for the appropriate browsers, as well as the name of the local xml to read data from, I then start by appending the create the table tag and then append it to the div tag in hack5.aspx I declare the variable that will represent/ hold the xml returned data object. I then run a for loop , before creating a row tag and then appending it to the div tag in hack5.aspx I then create the a row tag and then appending it to the div tag in hack5.aspx | then create a TextNode which is passed to variable, then create a td and append to div . then lastly append the textnode to td this format is the same for creating another 13 td tags that are to hold the data. The main problem is when I run the script - I see nothing display on my screen . no errors are shown, but with your sample code runs smoothly.   Hello everybody, I have 2 databases and I need to link information between two big tables (more than 3M entries each, continuously growing). The 1st database has a table 'pages' that stores various information about web pages, and includes the URL of each one. The column 'URL' is a varchar(512) and has no index. The 2nd database has a table 'urlHops' defined as: CREATE TABLE urlHops ( dest varchar(512) NOT NULL, src varchar(512) DEFAULT NULL, timestamp timestamp NOT NULL DEFAULT CURRENT_TIMESTAMP, KEY dest_key (dest), KEY src_key (src) ) ENGINE=InnoDB DEFAULT CHARSET=latin1 Now, I need basically to issue (efficiently) queries like this: select p.id,p.URL from db1.pages p, db2.urlHops u where u.src=p.URL and u.dest=? At first, I thought to add an index on pages(URL). But it's a very long column, and I already issue a lot of INSERTs and UPDATEs on the same table (way more than the number of SELECTs I would do using this index). Other possible solutions I thought are: -adding a column to pages, storing the md5 hash of the URL and indexing it; this way I could do queries using the md5 of the URL, with the advantage of an index on a smaller column. -adding another table that contains only page id and page URL, indexing both columns. But this is maybe a waste of space, having only the advantage of not slowing down the inserts and updates I execute on 'pages'. I don't want to slow down the inserts and updates, but at the same time I would be able to do the queries on the URL efficiently. Any advice? My primary concern is performance; if needed, wasting some disk space is not a problem. Thank you, regards Davide

There will be more than one room in each room type(i.e. 5 Rooms in type A, 10 rooms in Type B etc) and we have to query the db to find only those hotels in which there is atleast one room free in atleast one type. • SubSonic error: db.tables with a ~ in the name result in a "Character is not valid" error

  I renamed a database table and added a ~ character to the table name (my way of notifying it is a backup of something). After generating the SubSonic files, my Visual Studio gives a "Character not valid" error on file "AllStructs.vb" When looking into this file the following line of code was generated; Public Shared ReadOnly DbTable1~old As String = "dbtable1~old". I assume this character has to be filtered out of the db.table names when generating the SubSonic names?
