• What's the most efficient way to manage large datasets with Javascript/jQuery in IE?

  I have a search that returns JSON, which I then transform into a HTML table in Javascript. It repeatedly calls the jQuery.append() method, once for each row. I have a modern machine, and the Firefox response time is acceptable. But in IE 8 it is unbearably slow. I decided to move the transformation from data to HTML into the server-side PHP, changing the return type from JSON to HTML. Now, rather than calling the jQuery.append() time repeatedly, I call the jQuery.html() method once with the entire table. I noticed Firefox got faster, but IE got slower. These results are anecdotal and I have not done any benchmarking, but the IE performance is very disappointing. Is there something I can do to speed up the manipulation of large amounts of data in IE or is it simply a bad idea to process very much data at once with AJAX/Javascript?

• Am i using too much jquery? When i'm crossing the line?

  Lately i find myself using jquery and javascript a lot, often to do the same things that i did before using css. For example, i alternate table rows color or create buttons and links hover effects using javascript/jquery. Is this acceptable? Or should i keep using css for these kind of things? So the real question is: When i'm using too much jquery? How can i understand when i'm crossing the line? Thanks.

• jQuery - Why doesn't combining has() and gt() work in some cases?

  I wanted to select any ul which contains more than 3 lis. This code worked with the 1.2.6 jQuery library: $("ul:has(li:gt(2))") .each( function() { $(this).css("border", "solid red 1px"); }); But not 1.3.2 or 1.4.2. This code worked with the 1.4.2 jQuery library: $('ul').has('li:nth-child(3)').css('border', 'solid red 1px'); But not v1.2.6. Why does each version work with one library version, but not the other? Am I encountering some kind of bug, or am I doing something wrong? Any help understanding , or differences to be aware of between different versions of the jQuery libraries, would be much appreciated. Thanks!

• Social Media event Bandwidth requirements

  I have an one day event in July 2012, hosting 250 attendees for a social media event. We will be uploading live video to a website, allowing the press to access the web, and some vendors will be showing off their web sites for clients and visitors. The staff will need access for uploading files and information as needed. We had the event last year and tried a cable modem brought in with 2x2 megs just for the streaming video which worked well. I had 4 wireless hot spots, rented from a company 1.5 mbps x 780 kbps, which was were a complete failure. I was assured the 4 hot spots would be enough, but they did not work. What would be the proper way to get the bandwidth required to make the one day event successful? The setting is a Private Country Club where running cables everywhere is very tough.

• Does jquery require timestamp on GET Calls in IE7?

So added the timestamp: new Date().getTime() part. That fixed the IE issue. I want o know why this happens in jQuery? Do I need to include a timestamp parameter to URL to avoid caching in all jQuery Ajax calls?

I could successfully set the focus for first element by using $(":input:visible:first").focus(); or $(':input:enabled:visible:first').focus(); , according to jquery, set focus on the first enabled input or select or textarea on the page . I tried to use something like $('select:first').focus(); or $("select").first().focus(); or $(':visible:first').focus(); or $('enabled:visible:first').focus(); or other variations I could think of, but have not succeeded. • [Need help]: Issue with submit button and html file input control’s Click() method

  Scenario: On click of a button, we dynamically create html file input (file upload) control on the page and call that file input controls Click() method. User then selects the file from the disk. There is a “Submit” button to upload the selected file. Problem: The problem is, when clicked on “Submit” button first time, the input value from the file input control is cleared. And the request does not go to the server. When clicked second time, the request goes to server with empty file input value. Why the first click on submit button does not send the request to server. And why it clears the file input control value? Note: The issue is observed only when we call Click() method programmatically. If we let user to click browse, then in that case, the "Submit" does not clear the input value and sends request to server on first click itself. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance. By the way, server side code is in asp.net and client side in java script, testing on IE. -Somesh

• How do I go about getting the Ajax Queue plugin working in jQuery 1.3?

  I have an app that sends multiple Ajax requests simultaneously. I was originally running into race conditions until I discovered the jQuery Ajax Queue plugin, which works great with jQuery 1.2, but fails with jQuery 1.3. There are actually two different versions of the plugin; I am currently using this one which is the same as the first but just adds a bit more functionality. Anyway, I am using Firebug on Firefox 3.0.10 and when I run my code I don't receive any explicit errors, the call is just never returned. I could obviously continue using v1.2 but would really like to learn why this plugin fails with the latest release and what I can do to get it working. Thanks in advance.

  Hello together I call a certain div from another page with jquery to be loaded into a div on my main page like this: <script type="text/javascript"> $("#scotland").load("http://www.example.com/scotland .gallery"); </script> <div id="scotland"></div> The div I call is a piece of code which is automatically generated by a CMS made simple module, by the way. Now it comes to my problem: The .gallery div I call, looks, a little simplified, like this: <div class="gallery"> <span><img src="http://www.example.com/scotlandimage1.jpg"></span> <span class="imgnavi"><a href="link_to_next_page_with_one_image">Next image</href></span> </div> I want the "next image"-link to load the next page into the .gallery div (it is always a page with one image on it). But what it does, is, it opens the new page http://www.example.com/scotland only. I tried to use jquerys .live event to load the linked page (that would be "scotlandimage2" and the navigation, as you can see in the upper part - not only the image!), but I must have done something wrong. I tried different ways, but never got it to work. Numerous studies have shown that the confluence of ever-rising sales of smartphones and tablets; and the increasing tendency for workers of all kinds to be more mobile and less tied down to traditional, fixed-location workplaces and what now seem like old-fashioned PC-centric and traditional computing environments are driving Human Resources leaders to think about how, where, when, and for whom that the deployment of mobile HR solutions will help them address their business needs, and put information in the hands of those that need it, when they need it, and on their preferred devices. In the session we talked about some of the potential opportunities for mobile HR technologies, from simple workflow-based approval capability, to employee directories and robust employee profiles, to more advanced use cases like internal social networking and location-based mobile recruiting applications. And truly we are just scratching the surface of the potential and the value that all kinds of HR-related mobile technologies will help deliver to enterprises in the coming years. • touchend event doesn't work on Android

  Hi, I've just started looking at doing some basic mobile web development on the android and an writing a test script to investigate the touch events. I've run the following code in the android emulator, and the touchend event never gets fired. Can anyone tell me why ? I've tried in three versions of the emulator (1.6, 2.1 and 2.2) and all three behave in the same way. Thanks in advance for any help you can give me. • BAD DC transfering FSMO Roles to ADC

  I have a DC (FQDN:server.icmcpk.local) and an ADC (FQDN:file-server.icmcpk.local). Recently my DC is facing a bad sector problem so I changed the Operation Masters to file-server for all five roles. but when ever i turn off the OLD DC the file-server also stops wroking with AD and GPMC further i m also unable to join any other computer to this domain. For Test purpose i also added a new ADC (FQDN:wds-server.icmcpk.local) but no succes with the old DC off i had to turn the old DC on and then joined it. I m attaching the Dcdiags for all three servers. • Using jQuery and SPServices to Display List Items

  I had an interesting challenge recently that I turned to Marc Anderson’s wonderful SPServices project for. If you haven’t already seen or used SPServices, please do. It’s a jQuery library that does primarily two things. First, it wraps up all of the SharePoint web services in a nice little AJAX wrapper for use in JavaScript. Second, it enhances the form editing of items in SharePoint so you’re not hacking up your List Form pages. My challenge was simple but interesting. The user wanted to display a SharePoint item page (DispForm.aspx, which already had some customization on it to display related items via this blog post from Codeless Solutions for SharePoint) but launch from an external application using the value of one of the fields in the SharePoint list. For simplicity let’s say my list is a list of customers and the related list is a list of orders for that customer. It would look something like this (click on the item to see the full image): Your first thought might be, that’s easy! Display the customer information using a DataView Web Part and filter the item using a query string to match the customer number. However there are a few problems with this idea: You’ll need to build a custom page and then attach that related orders view to it. This is a bit of a problem because the solution from Codeless Solutions relies on the Title field on the page to be displayed. On a custom page you would have to recreate all of the elements found on the DispForm.aspx page so the related view would work. The DataView Web Part doesn’t look *exactly* like what the out of the box display form page does. Not a huge problem and can be overcome with some CSS style overrides but still, more work. A DVWP showing a single record doesn’t have the same toolbar that you would using the DispForm.aspx. Not a show-stopper and you can rebuild the toolbar but it’s going to potentially require code and then there’s the security trimming, etc. that you have to get right. DVWPs are not automatically updated if you add a column to the list like DispForm.aspx is. Work, work, work. For these reasons I thought it would be easier to take the already existing (modified) DispForm.aspx page and just add some jQuery magic to the page to find the item. Why do we need to find it? DispForm.aspx relies on a querystring parameter called “ID” which then displays whatever that item ID number is in the list. Trouble is, when you’re coming in from an external app via a link, you don’t know what that internal ID is (and frankly shouldn’t). I don’t like exposing internal SharePoint IDs to the outside world for the same reason I don’t do it with database IDs. They’re internal and while it’s find to use on the site itself you don’t want external links using it. It’s volatile and can change (delete one item then re-add it back with the same data and watch any ID references break). The next thought might be to call a SharePoint web service with a CAML query to get the item ID number using some criteria (in this case, the customer number). That’s great if you have that ability but again we had an existing application we were just adding a link to. The last thing I wanted to do was to crack open the code on that sucker and start calling web services (primarily because it’s Java, but really I’m a lazy geek). However if you’re doing this and have access to call a web service that would be an option. Back to this problem, how do I a) find a SharePoint List Item based on some field value other than ID and b) make it low impact so I can just construct a URL to it? That’s where jQuery and SPServices came to the rescue. After spending a few hours of emails back and forth with Marc and a couple of phone calls (and updating jQuery to the latest version, duh!) it was a simple answer. First we need a reference to a) jQuery b) SPServices and c) our script. I just dropped a Content Editor Web Part, the Swiss Army Knives of Web Parts, onto the DispForm.aspx page and added these lines: <script type="text/javascript" src="http://intranet/JavaScript/jquery-1.4.2.min.js"></script> <script type="text/javascript" src="http://intranet/JavaScript/jquery.SPServices-0.5.3.min.js"></script> <script type="text/javascript" src="http://intranet/JavaScript/RedirectToID.js"> </script> Update it to point to where you keep your scripts located. I prefer to keep them all in Document Libraries as I can make changes to them without having to remote into the server (and on a multiple web front end, that’s just a PITA), it provides me with version control of sorts, and it’s quick to add new plugins and scripts. Now we can look at our RedirectToID.js script. Line 3: We call SPServices.SPGetQueryString to get an array of query string values (a handy function in the library as I had 15 lines of code to do this which is now gone). Line 4: Extract the ID value from the query string Line 6: If we pass in “0” it means we’re looking up a field value. This allows DispForm.aspx to work like normal with SharePoint lists but lookup our values when invoked. Why ID at all? DispForm.aspx doesn’t work unless you pass in something and “0” is a *magic* number that will invoke the page but not lookup a value in the database. Line 8-15: Extract the CustomerNumber query string value, build a CAML query to find it then call the GetListitems method using SPServices Line 16: Process the results in our completefunc to iterate over all the rows (there should only be one) and extract the real ID of the item Line 17-20: Build a new URL based on the site (using a call to SPGetCurrentSite) and append our real ID to redirect to the DispForm.aspx page As you can see, it dynamically creates a CAML query for the call to the web service using the passed in value. You could even make this generic to take in different query strings, one for the field name to search for and the other for the value to find. That way it could be used for any field you want. For example you could bring up the correct item on the DispForm.aspx page based on customer name with something like this: http://myserver/Lists/Customers/DispForm.aspx?ID=0&FilterId=CustomerName&FilterValue=Sony Use your imagination. Some people would opt for building a custom page with a DVWP but if you want to leverage all the functionality of DispForm.aspx this might come in handy if you don’t want to rely on internal SharePoint IDs.

  One of the biggest reason I go to SQLPASS is that my friends are going there too. There are so many friends with whom I often talk on Facebook and Twitter but I rarely get time to meet them as well talk with them. One thing I am usually sure that many fo them will be for sure attend SQLPASS. This is one event which every SQL Server Enthusiast should attend. Just like everybody I had pleasant time to meet many of my SQL friends. There were so many friends that I met and I did not click photo. There were so many friends who clicked photo in their camera and I do not have them. Here are 1% of the photos which I have. • Custom broadcast events in AS3?

  In Actionscript 3, most events use the capture/target/bubble model, which is pretty popular nowadays: When an event occurs, it moves through the three phases of the event flow: the capture phase, which flows from the top of the display list hierarchy to the node just before the target node; the target phase, which comprises the target node; and the bubbling phase, which flows from the node subsequent to the target node back up the display list hierarchy. However, some events, such as the Sprite class's enterFrame event, do not capture OR bubble - you must subscribe directly to the target to detect the event. The documentation refers to these as "broadcast events." I assume this is for performance reasons, since these events will be triggered constantly for each sprite on stage and you don't want to have to deal with all that superfluous event propagation. I want to dispatch my own broadcast events. I know you can prevent an event from bubbling (Event.bubbles = false), but can you get rid of capture as well?

• Is JQuery UI meant to work only with Google Chrome??? (How about IE and Firefox??!)

  Hello, I'm using "Jquery UI 1./Dan Wellman/Packt Publishing" to learn JQuery UI. I'm working on the 'Dialog widget' chapiter. After I've completed a series of exercises in order to build a Dialog widget (using Google Chrome), I then tried my work with Internet Explorer and Firefox. The result has been disappointing. Chrome was perfet With Internet Explorer, (1) the title of the Dialog widget did not appear, (2) The location of the dialog widget was not correct (given the position: ["center", "center"]). It was rather offset toward left. With Firefox, the location was respected. However, only the outer container was visible. the content was missing, just a blank container. Also using Option Show:true and Hide:true did only work with Chrome. I wonder now if JQuery UI was meant to be used only with Google Chrome. I just think that I might be missing some directives to make it work with major browsers (as the author claimed in his book). Here's the code.
