• Can I use a class as an object in .NET to create instances of that class?

  I'm writing a fairly uncomplicated program which can "connect" to several different types of data sources including text files and various databases. I've decided to implement each of these connection types as a class inherited from an interface I called iConnection. So, for example, I have TextConnection, MySQLConnection, &c... as classes. In another static class I've got a dictionary with human-readable names for these connections as keys. For the value of each dictionary entry, I want the class itself. That way, I can do things like: newConnection = new dict[connectionTypeString](); Is there a way to do something like this? I'm fairly new to C# so I'd appreciate any help.

• C# 'is' type check on struct - odd .NET 4.0 x86 optimization behavior

  Since upgrading to VS2010 I'm getting some very strange behavior with the 'is' keyword. The program below (test.cs) outputs True when compiled in debug mode (for x86) and False when compiled with optimizations on (for x86). Compiling all combinations in x64 or AnyCPU gives the expected result, True. All combinations of compiling under .NET 3.5 give the expected result, True. I'm using the batch file below (runtest.bat) to compile and test the code using various combinations of compiler .NET framework. Has anyone else seen these kind of problems under .NET 4.0? Does everyone else see the same behavior as me on their computer when running runtests.bat? #@$@#$?? • What web UI framework is most suitable for building dynamic pages / forms?

  Hello, We are at a stage where we are considering different Web UI frameworks (most likely component based ones such as GWT, JSF, Wicket, Vaadin, etc). One of the main use cases / constraints is that it must support generating dynamic pages. I.e., the page/form layout and components is stored in a database and is changeable at runtime, and from this pages are generated. We are also going to write static layouts, but that is not the main focus of this question. I thought maybe the user community here can share experiences of different frameworks in this context. Are there differences in ease of implementation and what is suitable?

• ASP.NET WebMethod Returns JSON wrapped in quotes

  Hi, I have an asp.net page with a WebMethod on it to pass JSON back to my javascript. Bellow is the web method: [WebMethod] public static string getData(Dictionary<string, string> d) { string response = "{ \"firstname\": \"John\", \"lastname\": \"Smith\" }"; return response; } When this is returned to the client it is formatted as follows: { \"d\": \"{ \"firstname\": \"John\", \"lastname\": \"Smith\" }\" } The problem is the double quotes wrapping everything under 'd'. Is there something I've missed in the web method or some other means of returning the data without the quotes? I don't really want to be stripping it out on the client everytime. Also I've seen other articles where this doesn't happen. Any help would be appreciated thanks.

  In Java, the standard idiom for logging is to create a static variable for a logger object and use that in the various methods. In Scala, it looks like the idiom is to create a Logging trait with a logger member and mixin the trait in concrete classes. This means that each time an object is created it calls the logging framework to get a logger and also the object is bigger due to the additional reference. Is there an alternative that allows the ease of use of "with Logging" while still using a per-class logger instance? EDIT: My question is not about how one can write a logging framework in Scala, but rather how to use an existing one (log4j) without incurring an overhead of performance (getting a reference for each instance) or code complexity. Also, yes, I want to use log4j, simply because I'll use 3rd party libraries written in Java that are likely to use log4j.

  My primary IDE is Visual Studio 2005 and I have a large C/C++ project. I'm interested in what thread analysis tools are recommended. By that I mean, I want a tool, static or dynamic, to help find race conditions, deadlocks, and the like. So far I've casually researched the following: 1. Intel Thread Checker: I don't believe that it ties into VS 2005? 2. Valgrind/Helgrind: free. 3. Coverity: this is a costly tool if i understand correctly. Question: What is the best way to get the values for duplicate-named nodes distinctly? My thought was to load all values matching the node name into an array and then using the array index to refer to them. I'm not sure how to implement that, though. (I'm not well-versed in XML navigation.)

• iPhone Map: Identifying Users Location

  I have a number of annotations on my map, in addition to the users current location. This works fine, except the default color for the users current location is the same as all of the other annotations. I'd like to make the pin green for the users current location so that it's uniquely identifiable from the other pins. How do I do this? • Application lifecycle. How to run something only when application starts

  I have a dialog popup to indicate how long I want an activity to run. Seems simple enough, but its difficult to determine when the activity is really starting. If the user opens the keyboard on a G1 and thereby goes into landscape, that reruns the activities onCreate method. I can't have a static for the class or even create an application class, because I can't determine when the 'application' goes away. Even after destroying the only activity, the application is apparently still alive. Is there a way to determine that onCreate has been called because of the keyboard being extended or landscape mode invoked? Thanks

  I am just messing around with reading input files with java until I got stumped at the most basic of steps... finding the input file!   We are deploying web applications in java using tomcat on client machines across the country. Once they are installed, we want to allow a remote access to these web applications through a central server, but we do not want our clients to have to open ports on their routers. Is there a way to tunnel the http traffic in a way that the central server can access the web application that is behind the firewall ? The central server has a static ip address and we have full control over it. We don't need to access the filesystem, we only want to access the web application itself through a browser.

A customer wants to use static-like URLs that end up with .html extension for this project that make URLs more SEO friendly. E.g. "mysite.com/about.html " or "mysite.com/items/getitem/5.html" etc. I wonder is there any benefit from SEO perspective to use .html extension in dynamic URLs? Are Google and other search engines rank work better with such URLs?

  I'm attempting to rewrite some C# web service code that uses the Windows IP Helper API call "SendARP" to retreive a remote system's MAC address. SendARP works great - until you cross a network segment as Arp requests aren't routed. I've been looking at the "ParseNetworkString" documentation after happening across its existance on StackOverflow. • Twitter date unparseable?

  Hi, I want to convert the date string in a Twitter response to a Date object, but I always get a ParseException and I cannot see the error!?! Input string: Thu Dec 23 18:26:07 +0000 2010 SimpleDateFormat Pattern: EEE MMM dd HH:mm:ss ZZZZZ yyyy Method: public static Date getTwitterDate(String date) { SimpleDateFormat sf = new SimpleDateFormat(TWITTER); sf.setLenient(true); Date twitterDate = null; try { twitterDate = sf.parse(date); } catch (Exception e) {} return twitterDate; } I also tried this: http://friendpaste.com/2IaKdlT3Zat4ANwdAhxAmZ but that gives the same result. • How can I convert arbitrary strings to CLS-Compliant names?

  Does anyone know of an algorithm (or external library) that I could call to convert an arbitrary string (i.e. outside my control) to be CLS compliant? I am generating a dynamic RDLC (Client Report Definition) for an ASP.Net Report Viewer control and some of the field names need to be based on strings entered by the user. Unfortunately I have little control over the entry of the field names by the client (through a 3rd party CMS). But I am quite flexible around substitutions required to create the compliant string. I have a reactive hack algorithm for now along the lines of: public static string FormatForDynamicRdlc(this string s) { //We need to change this string to be CLS compliant. return s.Replace(Environment.NewLine, string.Empty) .Replace("\t", string.Empty) .Replace(",", string.Empty) .Replace("-", "_") .Replace(" ", "_"); } But I would love something more comprehensive. Any ideas?
