• Mobile phone detection (brand, model, browser etc)

  What do you use to detect visitor's mobile phone, down to the model if possible? Currently we maintain our own database but it's really getting behind due to lack of manpower to maintain it, so we decided to give 3rd party solution a try. These are my candidates but I don't have time to really try them all: DeviceAtlas - 1 year personal evaluation, but basic license is affordable. Their database look solid with daily update and user-contributed tests / updates. I am favoring this one at the moment. DetectRight - I was recommended this by a colleague but really can't find much from their site. 20k devices -- really? WURFL - Open source, database collaboratively derived from UAProf. So basically if you're going with UAProf solution, you're better off with WURFL. DetectMoBileBrowsers - This looks like the simplest of all. Too bad it's language dependent (PHP). Please share your experience or suggestions!

• StreamInsight Licensing

  I cannot help but think that this is currently wrong.  There are two editions of StreamInsight (SI), Premium and Standard.  A link to their differences is here Points to note Developer Edition and Evaluation Edition represent Enterprise Edition in SQL Server but not SI where they represent Datacentre Edition.  Won’t this be confusing when people evaluating SI find that it is not the same animal when they move to Enterprise Edition? If SI Premium is the only thing you want out of the SQL Server box then it is going to be a high cost. The latency rates as well quoted on the site above make Premium Edition essential if you are going to be using this to do Real-Time analytics.

  When I co-oped during college, I had to fill out an evaluation of the co-op afterwards. One metric I always had to rate was how much the company required me to "Make ethical decisions related to your profession." This always seemed kinda silly- I mean, my first co-op was writing java apps to manage industrial radios. There wasn't much moral ambiguity going on. Anyway, I'm wonder what sort of ethical dilemmas one might actually encounter in software development. Edit: It should be noted that no ethically-trained software engineer would ever consent to write a DestroyBaghdad procedure. Basic professional ethics would require him to write a DestroyCity procedure, to which Baghdad could be given as a parameter. - Nathanial Borenstein

  Hi, I have been working as an embedded software engineer on mostly 8 bit micro-controller firmware and desktop/mobile applications development for the past five years. My work on a WinCE project (in which I got introduced to .NET CF) was short lived. I did use core APIs for interrupt processing, peripheral communication, etc...but again, not exactly a pure RTOS environment. In order to get together more solid experience for growing more in the embedded field, I want to work more with RTOSes. Will buying an evaluation board with an RTOS and putting together a project at home be regarded as a good experience or will an online course be more useful? I am just not clear as to what will be regarded as good experience. Any suggestions or directions will greatly help me. I have a passion for the field but just a need a point in the right direction.   It is my first time writing an article on a software project. I am supposed to use ACM UbiComp paper format. I already have a structure that I should follow and there is a Background & Research Methods section after Abstract, Introduction, Related Work sections. I have browser through several articles, but some of them either dont have it, have only background section or have only research methods section. I am having hard time to find an article that has this section and moreover what I must write on here. My project is about Bluetooth location tracking and I do have the implementation and evaluation, so it is not something theoretical.

Basically, what I'd do would be a class that manages displaying and updating positions of all the enemies. But how to create good deplacements for enemies? A list of where-to-go points? gravitating around some fixed points (with ponderation, distance evaluation etc.)? Same question for the shoot patterns? Can you please put me on a track?

  A recent Oracle internal performance evaluation for computer-based product design demonstrated that Oracle's SPARC T5-4 server running MSC's SimManager simulation software with Oracle Database 12c consolidates the work of multiple x86 servers while delivering better overall performance.   Engineering simulation solutions have taken the center stage in helping companies design and develop innovative products while reducing physical prototyping costs, and exploring a larger design space, resulting in more design possibilities. For this solution, a single SPARC T5-4 server running Oracle Solaris 11 was deployed to consolidate the MSC SimManager server, the Oracle Database 12c server, and the web application server onto a single platform. • Windows Embedded Compact 7 in Padua

  Yesterday I did a presentation about Windows CE at the University of Padua Even if the picture seems to suggest that I just showed and empty slide, I illustrated the new features of the OS and did a quick demo of Silverlight for Windows Embedded on Windows Embedded Compact 7 (I’ve to get used to this new name), showing the new tools that provide a better integration between Expression Blend and Visual Studio for the development of Silverlight applications (I hope to be able to write more on this topic soon!). The Operating System was running on some real hardware (TI OMAP3530 evaluation board) and many people had a chance to interact with the new customizable shell. Most of the 60 people attending were still awake at the end of the one hour and a half session, and some of them even asked questions! I would like to thank all the people attending and all the people of Arrow, Fortech Embedded Labs and the University of Padua that made this event possible and provide me the tool and the time to do this presentation.   From PHP development I know that eval is evil and I've recently read What constitutes “Proper use” of the javascript Eval feature? and Don't be eval. The only proper use of eval I've read is Ajax. I'm currently developing a visualization tool that lets users see how polynomials can interpolate functions: Example Code on GitHub I use eval for evaluation of arbitrary functions. Is this a legitimate use of eval? How could I get rid of eval? I want the user to be able to execute any function of the following forms: a x^i with a,i in R sin, cos, tan b^x with b in R any combination that you can get by adding (e.g. x^2 + x^3 + sin(x)), multiplying (e.g. sin(x)*x^2) or inserting (e.g. sin(x^2))

• Why doesn't this ContentLoader project (VS2010 e) recognize Microsoft.Build.dll?

  I am working with an XNA content loader sample. In the references for the project (VS 2010 Express) there are: Microsoft.Build Microsoft.Build.Framework //as well as the standard XNA framework and graphics references To emulate this project, I am trying to first add a reference to Microsoft.Build.dll. But Visual Studio warns me that it cannot load the .dll. I looked at MSDN and the document referenced Microsoft.Build.Evaluation. This is suppose to be available in the Microsoft.Build.dll and then I'll have access to the Project class. Has anyone had any experience with this?

• Question about initial interview for job [closed]

  So I feel kind of stupid having to ask this but tomorrow I have a phone interview with a good company. Phone interviews themselves not a big deal for me, but having to tell them my salary expectations is. The position that I'm applying for is a mid-level software engineer, I fit all of the requirements (I'm not overly qualified by any means), and I want to be sure I'm not asking for an amount that would be absurd or too little. Now, assuming I get a second interview and have to complete some sort of puzzle/code/work, they may pay me +/- whatever I asked for based upon their evaluation of my work. What I'd like to know, is what is a good amount to ask for? Or am I completely wrong with my assumptions? Either way some advice would be much appreciated!

• Hooking thread exit

  Is there a way for me to hook the exit of managed threads (i.e. run some code on a thread, just before it exits?) I've developed a mechanism for hooking thread exit that works for some threads. Step 1: develop a 'hook' STA COM class that takes a callback function and calls it in its destructor. Step 2: create a ThreadStatic instance of this object on the thread I want to hook, and pass the object a managed delegate converted to an unmanaged function pointer. The delegate then gets called on thread exit (since the CLR calls IUnknown::Release on all STA COM RCWs as part of thread exit). This mechanism works on, for example, worker threads that I create in code using the Thread class. However, it doesn't seem to work for the application's main thread (be it a console or windows app). The 'hook' COM object seems to be deleted too late in the shutdown process and the attempt to call the delegate fails. (The reason I want to implement this facility is so I can run some native COM code on the exiting thread that works with STA COM objects that were created on the thread, before it's 'too late' (i.e. before the thread has exited, and it's no longer possible to work with STA COM objects on that thread.))

• Hopping from a C++ to a Perl/Unix job

  Hi all, I have been a C++ / Linux Developer till now and I am adept in this stack. Of late I have been getting opportunities that require Perl, Unix (with knowledge of C++,shell scripting) expertise. Organizations are showing interest even though I don't have much scripting experience to boast off. The role is more in a Support, maintenance project involving SQL as well. Off late I am in a fix whether to forgo these offers or not. I don't know the dynamics of an IT organization and thus on one hand I fear that my C++ experience will be nullified and on the positive side I am getting to work on a new technology stack which will only add to my skill set. I am sure, most of you at some point of time have encountered such dilemmas and would have taken some decision. I want you to share your perspectives on such a scenario where a person is required to change his/her technology stack when changing his/her job. What are the merits and demerits in going with either of the choices? Also I know that C++ isn't going anywhere in the near future. What about perl? I have no clue as to what the future holds for perl developer? Whether there are enough opportunities for a perl developer? I am asking this question here because most of my fellow programmers face this career choice dilemma. Thanks.
