• Can't communicate with Primary DNS Server

  A computer, with Windows 7, can't access any website by domain suddenly. Whether this computer use a wired link or connect to the WLAN, The fault persists IP and DNS obtained automatically, and seems normal (ipconfig /all return the correct info) I can visit websites by using HTTP proxy The DNS server is available, other computer in my room works properly. I can ping myself, the gateway and any other IP, but domains I can use nslookup and obtain the correct IP info There are some error information in the event log about dns client events explaining the client can not verify the DNS server available Windows network diagnosis explain that Windows can't communicate with the device or resource (Primary DNS Server) I guess the dns client should be blame. I tried to do the following things but the fault persist. Reinstall the driver of network adapter Reset TCP/IP (netsh int ip reset) Reset Winsock (netsh winsock reset) Reset LSP I don't want to reinstall the whole os, what should I do?

• Unity's gone! How do I get it back?

  Earlier today my Unity desktop disappeared: I got a black screen with white text, but it disappeared too quickly for me to read. When the desktop reappeared, it was the Ubuntu Classic desktop. I used $ unity --reset but that did not do anything. I tried rebooting so I could choose unity from the list when I logged in, but although there was Ubuntu choice, there was no unity listed (but classic was listed). I was able to install Unity 2D and am using that, but really want to get 3D back. I had been using Ubuntu without problems for several weeks when this happened. My graphics card is onboard a Dell Latitude desktop - a couple years old - and is reported as an Intel G33/G31. I've looked at other requests for help here, and tried suggestions when they seemed to relate to similar problems, but nothing seems to work so far. Any ideas? Thanks! • Why do some bad websites rank well?

  Consider the following scenario: you are pitching SEO/Website Optimisation to a prospective client and you explain to them the importance of great copy and content, how acquiring links (ethically) can increase page rank, why the quality of the HTML build matters (H1, H2 tags, w3c validation etc), why keyword research is beneficial, you may drop in a few Google Webmaster Guideline or Matt Cutts references to back up your claims and rubbish the "back hat" approach as being no longer effective for good measure. Your advice is ethical and in the eyes of best practices, spot on. Then, the client points out to you some of their long established competitors on Google and you see these competitor websites ranking in the top spots (1 to 3) for medium to highly competitive search phrases that your client wants to compete for. These websites totally contradict your ethical approach and pretty much violate every best practice previously noted. They even out perform other "white hat" competitors who are in accordance with the above guidelines. I experienced this today. One of these well ranking websites had: About six microsites with more or less the same copy and a slightly varied layout Little or not textual content I would almost say duplicate content across the sites, but there was so little of it it could barely qualify for being duplicate All the content in Flash (with a music track that kicked in on each page load, not so much of an SEO issue - but it helps paint the picture) Keyword stuffing behind the Flash file with a bunch of black text on black background in the style of keyword 1 keyword 2,keyword1,keyword 2,keyword 2 keyword 3 and so on... The exact keyword stuffed combination present on every page of the website A bunch of clearly self made links from poor quality forums and directories with little or no Page Rank Links exchanged across the microsites How do you explain your way out of this when this hard evidence is sat in front of you undermining your great pitch?

• Can .htaccess slow down a site?

  I'm working with a client on an e-commerce website. I implemented clean URLs using .htaccess. I also used .htaccess to solve canonical issues such as redirecting www to non-www and removing index.php from the URL. The website recently began to slow down dramatically, sometimes not even loading. The site is hosted on GoDaddy, and when the client called GoDaddy they told him it was the .htaccess file slowing down the website. I find this highly unlikely because of my past experiences, but I'm not 100% sure. My thinking is that the client's website is most likely on a shared server with a busy neighborhood, thus slowing down the site. It's not always slow, but rather sporadic throughout the day, loading fast at some points and slow at other points in time. Can the .htaccess file slow down a website to a crawl? If so, are there better ways to solve these problems with different rewrite rules and such? • One time torrent download

  I know about bittorrent but have never used it since it tends to be mostly used for illegal download of movies and software. Typically whenever I see a legitimate use for it (Linux distros) there is also a regular download option so I haven't had the need for a client until today. There is a large (500Mb) file I want to download that appears to only be accessible via bit torrent. For a one time use, is there an online resource that converts the torrent to a normal http no-special-client-software download? If not, what is an easy to use and light client to install/uninstall on WinXP for a one time use?

  I'm having issues with restoring my .bak files to my own sharepoint environment due to version difference. My version is currently: Sharepoint Server with Enterprise Client Access License Ms sharepoint Foundation 2010 core : 14.0.4763.1000 Security Update of Ms sharepoint Foundation 2010(kb2494001) 14.0.6106.5008 Server Version(Where I'm creating my Backups): SharePoint Server with Enterprise Client Access License Microsoft SharePoint Foundation 2010 Core : 14.0.4763.1000 Security Update for Office SharePoint Foundation 2010 (KB2345322) : 14.0.5123.5002 I would like to know if there is a way I could enable my backups from the Server to be compatible with my version. My only option is to downgrade my version since I'm not an admin to the server. Does my Client Access License an issue? Can I just downgrade my security update to match the one in the server? If there is would you please be kind enough to tell me how. ?

  We recently received this quote from a project that successfully used OUM: “On our project, we applied a combination of the Oracle Unified Method (OUM) and the client's methodology. Using a hybrid of the two methods resulted in an implementation approach that was optimized for the client-specific requirements for this project." This hybrid approach is an excellent example of using OUM in the flexible and scalable manner in which it was intended. The project team was able to scale OUM to be fit-for-purpose for their given situation. It's great to see how merging what was needed out of OUM with the client’s methodology resulted in an implementation approach that more closely aligned to the business needs. Successfully scaling OUM is dependent on the needs of the particular project and/or engagement. The key is to use no more than is necessary to satisfy the requirements of the implementation and appropriately address risks. • TCP Tweaking options and Results: Any suggestions?

  I first tried with the default windows XP TCP option(It doesn't have TCPWindowSize option and TCP1323 in its Registry setting). I dynamically set those options using TCP optimizer. Here I list out the result with and without TCP Tweaking option. I see no major improvements in TCP after increasing window size optimally too. What value should I set to increase the performance? • Form Validation Options

  The steps involved in transmitting form data from the client to the Web server User loads web form. User enters data in to web form fields User clicks submit On submit page validates fields using JavaScript. If validation errors are found then the validation script stops the browser from canceling posting the data to the web server and displays error messages as needed. If the form passes the data validation process then the browser will URL encode the values of every field and post it to the server.  The server reads the posted data from the query string and then again validates the data just to ensure data consistency and to prevent any non-validated data because JavaScript was turned off on the clients browser from being inserted in to a database or passed on to other process. If the data passes the second validation check then the server side code will continue with the requested processes. In my opinion, it is mandatory to validate data using client side and server side validation as a fail over process. The client side validation allows users to correct any error before they are sent to the web server for processing, and this allows for an immediate response back to the user regarding data that is not correct or in the proper format that is desired. In addition, this prevents unnecessary interaction between the user and the web server and will free up the server over time compared to doing only server side validation. Server validation is the last line of defense when it comes to validation because you can check to ensure the user’s data is correct before it is used in a business process or stored to a database. Honestly, I cannot foresee a scenario where I would only want to use one form of validation over another especially with the current cost of creating and maintaining data. In my opinion, the redundant validation is well worth the overhead.

• Comparing the Performance of Visual Studio's Web Reference to a Custom Class

  As developers, we all make assumptions when programming. Perhaps the biggest assumption we make is that those libraries and tools that ship with the .NET Framework are the best way to accomplish a given task. For example, most developers assume that using ASP.NET's Membership system is the best way to manage user accounts in a website (rather than rolling your own user account store). Similarly, creating a Web Reference to communicate with a web service generates markup that auto-creates a proxy class, which handles the low-level details of invoking the web service, serializing parameters, and so on. Recently a client made us question one of our fundamental assumptions about the .NET Framework and Web Services by asking, "Why should we use proxy class created by Visual Studio to connect to a web service?" In this particular project we were calling a web service to retrieve data, which was then sorted, formatted slightly and displayed in a web page. The client hypothesized that it would be more efficient to invoke the web service directly via the HttpWebRequest class, retrieve the XML output, populate an XmlDocument object, then use XSLT to output the result to HTML. Surely that would be faster than using Visual Studio's auto-generated proxy class, right? Prior to this request, we had never considered rolling our own proxy class; we had always taken advantage of the proxy classes Visual Studio auto-generated for us. • Windows Shares / NTFS permissions on folder redirection in Active Directory

  A client has folder redirection in AD setup on each user's Home Folder set to the Z:\ drive as \server\share\username. A Group Policy redirects the user's Documents to the user's Home Folder with the option 'Grant the user to exclusive rights to Documents' selected. The share on the server has permissions for the relevant user security group with 'Full Control', but each user's folder only have NTFS permissions only for 'CREATOR OWNER' and 'Domain Admins'. Why can the different users access other user's folders? I thought the most restrictive permissions applied effectively between the share and the NTFS permissions. Also, this setup has been like this for years, and this client recently updated all client computers to Windows 7. What is the best way to setup this redirection now? I assume only in Group Policy, also Basic Redirection - to create a folder for each user under the root path?

• Is there a VNC server for mac with decent international keyboard support?

  Hi, I'm having trouble finding a VNC server for Mac OS X that allows me to connect from a Windows box with German keyboard layout. I've tried the built-in desktop sharing and several versions of Vine but all of them had problems with several keys. Does maybe anyone know about a working combination of a Mac OS X VNC server and Windows VNC client which properly supports a German keyboard layout on the client? Update: I don't think the Windows client is the problem, because I have no issues connecting to Linux boxes. And I've tried several different clients.

  The files can be accessed from every artifact, such as .bpel, .mplan, .task, .xsl, .wsdl etc., of the composite. 'oramds' protocol is used to access these files. You need to setup your adf-config.xml file in your dev environment or Jdeveloper to access these files from MDS. Here is the sample adf-config.xml. xmlns:sec="http://xmlns.oracle.com/adf/security/config" name="jdbc-url"/ name="metadata-path"/ credentialStoreLocation="../../src/META-INF/jps-config.xml"/ This adf-config.xml is located in directory named .adf/META-INF, which is in the application home of your project. Application home is the directory where .jws file of you application exists. Other than setting this file, you need not make any other changes in your project or composite to access MDS. After setting this up, you can create a new SOA-MDS connection in your Jdev. This enables you to have a resource pallet in which you can browse and choose the required file from MDS.

• Config import on network-manager-openvpn

  I'm trying to use a free service using the OpenVPN protocol using OpenVPN's GUI module in the network manager. The config worked perfectly well as .ovpn on Windows. The behavior in Windows is such that I ran OpenVPN GUI and chose to connect to this particular VPN. It would then show the activity in the attempt to connect and opens a dialog box for username/password authentication. I've successfully imported all the configurations by changing the file type to .conf and using the import feature in network manager. However, attempting to connect would simply display the network manager's attempting to connect animation, but ultimately end with a notification of connection timing out.   Hello all, We are experience a 500 http error when trying to run remote powershell on a win 2008 R2 server. I have run enable-wsmancredssp for both client and server roles on this machine. I have also run "winrm quickconfig". Also the allowfreshcredentials delegation group policy is setup correctly as well. There are active listeners running and credssp is enabled for client and service. I can connect with kerberos (by not specifing authentication type), but the following remote powershell command fails: Enter-PSSession -ComputerName serverX -credential domain\user -Authentication Credssp Error: Enter-PSSession : Connecting to remote server failed with the following error message : The WinRM client received an HTTP server error status (500), but the remote service did not include any other information about the cause of the failure. For more information, see the about_Remote_Troubleshooting Help topic. At line:1 char:16 I have not been able to find any useful information on how to troubleshoot this. I have restarted Winrm, rebooted, disabled and re-enabled credssp. Please help.

• Tips and tricks to make NX server more stable

  My shop has been using the FreeNX server on Fedora 11 for a while now and mostly getting good results, especially with performance, but we have some annoying problems with client connections. There are two main issues: Client sessions sometimes freeze after a long time (seems to be at least 2 hours of having the session active) We often have to make multiple attempts to start a new client session, especially if a previous session was suspended rather than terminated. In qwuite a few cases, we've had to restart the NX server to get around this. Our NX server configuration is the default except that we've enabled logging level 7 to /var/log/nxserver.log, and set the font server to "unix:/7100" so that it uses xfs. Does anyone have any ideas for making things more stable ?

• How could there still not be a mysqldb module for Python 3?

  This SO question is now more than two years old. MySQL is an incredibly popular database engine, Python is an incredibly popular programming language, and Python 3 has been officially released two years ago, and was available even before that. What's more, the whole mysqldb module is just a layer translating Python's db-api to MySQL's API. It's not that big of a library. I must be missing something here. How come almost* nobody in the entire open source community has spent the (I'm guessing) two weeks it takes to port this lib? Is Python 3 that unpopular? Is the combination of python and mysql not as common as I assume? Or maybe it's just a lot harder to port mysqldb than I assume? Anyone know the inside story on this? * Now I see that this guy has done it, which takes some of the wind out of my question, but it still seems to little and too late to make sense.

• cannot connect to MS FTP 7.5 on Windows 2008 on Amazon EC2 instance

  I have just installed the MS FTP 7.5 upgrade on my Windows 2008 Server (Service Pack 2) running on an Amazon EC2 instance. In the FTP Firewall Support settings for the server in IIS Manager I have set up the passive port range 45001 - 45005 and also set the External Firewall IP address to match the assigned Amazon Elastic IP address. Using the AWS Console I changed the Security Group for the server to allow access to the server through ports 21 and 45001 through 45005. Using an FTP client (either the command line FTP client or Windows Explorer) on the Amazon server I can connect to the FTP server but I cannot connect with an external FTP client. When I checked to see which ports were open on the server using Shields Up it shows that port 21 is open but ports 45001 to 45005 are closed. I assume I'm missing something. Any help greatly appreciated.
