  • Show a DB as a directory (Like Sharepoint Does)

    - by Zyd
Hi, My team and I are programming a sort of Document Manager and the idea is to store them completely on DB. Is there a protocol or Extensions that allows us to show a "Virtual Directory" or files that are really non existent (only in DB). How does Sharepoint do this? I understand that Sharepoint uses WebDav but it implies that the files do exist physically somewhere. We intend to develop this application on .NET 4.0 and deploy it on IIS. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance

  • Where can one find free software icons / images?

    - by mmattax
This may not be directly related to programming, but I always find it hard to get quality icons that can be used for software. I currently have the need for some type of "green checkmark image", and I always seem to be looking for print, save, delete types of icons... Anybody have good resources? Note: I rather not be stealing someone's intellectual property.

  • Best way to save complex Python data structures across program sessions (pickle, json, xml, database

    - by Malcolm
Looking for advice on the best technique for saving complex Python data structures across program sessions. Here's a list of techniques I've come up with so far: pickle/cpickle json jsonpickle xml database (like SQLite) Pickle is the easiest and fastest technique, but my understanding is that there is no guarantee that pickle output will work across various versions of Python 2.x/3.x or across 32 and 64 bit implementations of Python. Json only works for simple data structures. Jsonpickle seems to correct this AND seems to be written to work across different versions of Python. Serializing to XML or to a database is possible, but represents extra effort since we would have to do the serialization ourselves manually. Thank you, Malcolm

  • How to convert a gi-normous integer (in string format) to hex format? (C#)

    - by eviljack
Given a potentially huge integer value (in c# string format), I want to be able to generate it's hex equivalent. Normal methods don't apply here as we are talking arbitrarily large numbers, 50 digits or more. The techniques I've seen which use a technique like this: // Store integer 182 int decValue = 182; // Convert integer 182 as a hex in a string variable string hexValue = decValue.ToString("X"); // Convert the hex string back to the number int decAgain = int.Parse(hexValue, System.Globalization.NumberStyles.HexNumber); won't work because the integer to convert is too large. For example I need to be able to convert a string like this: 843370923007003347112437570992242323 to it's hex equivalent. these don't work: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1139957/c-convert-int-to-hex-and-back-again http://stackoverflow.com/questions/74148/how-to-convert-numbers-between-hex-and-decimal-in-c

  • How to remove all of the html whitespace/newlines of a NSString

    - by Kyriakos Leivadas
i've got a problem and i hope someone can solve it. I parsed some html to a nsstring and im trying to trim all of the characters and keep some specific words. The problem is that i trimmed all the characters from the nsstring that i didnt want but the weird thing is that i cant get rid of all the whitespace. i used all the techniques i read from other answers but still some whitespace remains. here is my code -(void)requestFinished:(ASIHTTPRequest *)request{ NSString *htmlData = [request responseString]; NSCharacterSet *garbage = [NSCharacterSet characterSetWithCharactersInString:@"qazwsxedcrfvtgbyhnujmik,ol.p;/[]'QAZWSXEDCRFVTGBYHNUJMIKOLP()\"-1234567890#{}=:+_&!`<>"]; //im doing this to remove all characters except non-english chars htmlData = [htmlData compomentsSeparatedByCharactersInSet:garbage ]compomentsJoinedByString:@""]; htmlData = [htmlData stringByTrimmingCharactersInSet:[NSCharacterSet whitespaceAndNewlineCharacterSet]]; htmlData = [htmlData stringByReplacingOccurencesOfString:@"[\n\t\r ]+" withString@""]; htmlData = [htmlData stringByReplacingOccurencesOfString:@" " withString:@""]; NSLog(@"%@",htmlData); } i get this result: nonenglishwordsnonenglishwords nonenglishwordsnonenglishwords (whitespace or new lines in middle remains) thank you.

  • Should you remove all warnings in your Verilog or VHDL design? Why or why not?

    - by Brian Carlton
In (regular) software I have worked at companies where the gcc option -Wall is used to show all warnings. Then they need to be dealt with. With non-trivial FPGA/ASIC design in Verilog or VHDL there are often many many warnings. Should I worry about all of them? Do you have any specific techniques to suggest? My flow is mainly for FPGAs (Altera and Xilinx in particular), but I assume the same rules would apply to ASIC design, possibly more so due to the inability to change the design after it is built.

  • Is SEO knowledge important for web developers?

    - by splattne
Looking for some SEO (Search engine optimization) questions on Stackoverflow, I saw ambivalent reactions to these questions. Some were closed as "not programming related" or were downvoted, others were answered and got upvoted. It seems that many developers think SEO was something "dirty" or belonged in the realm of spam. IMHO designing for search engines and practising SEO techniques adds important value to the final product like, for example, a good user interface. Should SEO really be left to specialized non-programmers? Shouldn't web developers have profound SEO knowledge? Or is it okay to apply SEO as a post-development process?

  • OpenGL extensions available on different Android devices

    - by MH114
I'm in the process of writing an OpenGL ES powered framework for my next Android game(s). Currently I'm supporting three different techniques of drawing sprites: the basic way: using vertex arrays (slow) using vertex-buffer-objects (VBOs) (faster) using the draw_texture extension (fastest, but only for basic sprites, i.e. no transforming) Vertex arrays are supported in OpenGL ES 1.0 and thus in every Android-device. I'm guessing most (if not all) of the current devices also support VBOs and draw_texture. Instead of guessing, I'd like to know the extensions supported by different devices. If majority of devices support VBOs, I could simplify my code and focus only on VBOs + draw_texture. It'd be helpful to know what different devices support, so if you have an Android-device, do report the extensions list please. :) String extensions = gl.glGetString(GL10.GL_EXTENSIONS); I've got a HTC Hero, so I can share those extensions next.

  • Parallel computing in .net

    - by HotTester
Since the launch of .net 4.0 a new term that has got into lime light is parallel computing. Does parallel computing provide us some benefits or its just another concept or feature. Further is .net really going to utilize it in applications ? Further is parallel computing different from parallel programming ? Kindly throw some light on the issue in perspective of .net and some examples would be helpful. Thanks...

  • Portion of Screen Broke

    - by Devoted
Hi, A portion of my laptop screen broke. Is there any kind of software that will just ignore that part and resize everything accordingly? It's like 1/6 of the screen on the right that makes anything over there impossible to see. If not, what would be the best programming language to go about making my own program? It is a PC but I can also run Ubuntu if that would be easier to make a program for.

  • Understanding run time code interpretation and execution

    - by Bob
I'm creating a game in XNA and was thinking of creating my own scripting language (extremely simple mind you). I know there's better ways to go about this (and that I'm reinventing the wheel), but I want the learning experience more than to be productive and fast. When confronted with code at run time, from what I understand, the usual approach is to parse into a machine code or byte code or something else that is actually executable and then execute that, right? But, for instance, when Chrome first came out they said their JavaScript engine was fast because it compiles the JavaScript into machine code. This implies other engines weren't compiling into machine code. I'd prefer not compiling to a lower language, so are there any known modern techniques for parsing and executing code without compiling to low level? Perhaps something like parsing the code into some sort of tree, branching through the tree, and comparing each symbol and calling some function that handles that symbol? (Wild guessing and stabbing in the dark)

  • What is the proper way to credit public code snippets?

    - by Babiker
This question might not be a programming problem, but its been bothering me. There is a lot of free js/css scripts out there for public use. I some times use these scripts. If any, what is the formal and proper way to credit these snippets when all i have is a name of a website and a url. I understand that a simple comment might get the job done but i wanted to know whether there is a more professional way.

  • Using Markov models to convert all caps to mixed case and related problems

    - by hippietrail
I've been thinking about using Markov techniques to restore missing information to natural language text. Restore mixed case to text in all caps Restore accents / diacritics to languages which should have them but have been converted to plain ASCII Convert rough phonetic transcriptions back into native alphabets That seems to be in order of least difficult to most difficult. Basically the problem is resolving ambiguities based on context. I can use Wiktionary as a dictionary and Wikipedia as a corpus using n-grams and Markov chains to resolve the ambiguities. Am I on the right track? Are there already some services, libraries, or tools for this sort of thing? Examples GEORGE LOST HIS SIM CARD IN THE BUSH - George lost his SIM card in the bush tantot il rit a gorge deployee - tantôt il rit à gorge déployée

  • Objects With No Behavior

    - by Patrick Donovan
I've been teaching myself object oriented programming and I'm thinking about a situation where I have an object "Transaction", that has quite a few properties to it like account, amount, date, currency, type, etc. I never plan to mutate these data points, and calculation logic will live in other classes. My question is, is it poor Python design to instantiate thousands of objects just to hold data? I find the data far easier to work with embedded in a class rather than trying to cram it into some combination of data structures.

  • Finding a small image in a bigger one

    - by tur1ng
Given an image with a large dimension ( 1.000 x 1.000). What is a good approach to find a small image (e.g. 50 x 50) in the big one? The smaller image can be rotated and differ in the size, but only with a 1:1 ratio. It's not related to any programming language - I'm just interested in pattern recognition. Thank you.
