• Ridiculously easy AJAX with ASP.NET MVC and jQuery

  After deciding I wanted to dive full-on into the world of ASP.NET MVC 2, I  began doing some research into what would be the best way to support some of my required AJAX functionality on this platform.  The result of these efforts was a barrage of options – many of which required completely different JScript infrastructure than what I planned to go forward with.  As I’ve been delighted with jQuery so far, I began tossing out all approaches that didn’t natively leverage it… Thus, I planned to resist the temptation to take anymore <script> dependencies whatsoever, unless I thoroughly proved that jQuery could NOT do what I planned to do.   Here’s some code I wish I would’ve found early in my research.  This would’ve saved me quite a bit of time and search engine bandwidth. ;-)   <script type="text/javascript">     $(document).ready(function () {         $('#div_name_here').load('<%=Url.Action("ACTION_NAME_HERE","CONTROLLER_NAME_HERE")%>');         $('#id_of_link_I_want_trigger_the_ajax_call')       .bind('click', function (event) {           $('#div_name_where_I_want_to_have_the_ajax_response_loaded_here').load('<%=Url.Action("ACTION_HERE","CONTROLLER_HERE", )%>');       })     }) </script>

• ASP.NET MVC 3 (C#) Software Architecture

  I am starting on a relatively large and ambitious ASP.NET MVC 3 project and just thinking about the best way to organize my code. The project is basically going to be a general management system that will be capable of supporting any type management system whether it be a blogging system, cms, reservation system, wikis, forums, project management system, etc…, each of them being just a separate 'module'. You can read more about it on my blog posted here : http://www.ryanzec.com/index.php/blog/details/8 (forgive me, the style of the site kinda sucks). For those who don't want to read the long blog post the basic idea is that the core system itself is nothing more than a users system with an admin interface to manage the users system. Then you just add on module as you need them and the module I will be creating is a simple blog post to test it out before I move on to the big module which is a project management system. Now I am just trying to think of the best way to structure this so that it is easy for users to add in there own modules but easy for me to update to core system without worrying about the user modifying the core code. I think the ideal way would be to have a number of core projects that user is specifically told not to modify otherwise the system may become unstable and future updates would not work. When the user wants to add in there own modules, they would just add in a new project (or multiple projects). The thing is I am not sure that it is even possible to use multiple projects all with their own controllers, razor view template, css, javascript, etc... in one web application. Ideally each module would have some of it own razor view templates, css, javascript, image files and also need access to some of the core razor view templates, css, javascript, image files which would is in a separate project. It is possible to have 1 web application run off of controllers, razor view templates, css, javascript, image files that are store in multiple projects? Is there a better was to structure this to allow the user to easily add in module with having to modify the core code?

  I have developed an ASP.NET MVC Web Application to execute PowerShell scripts. I am using the VS web server and can execute scripts fine. However, a requirement is that users are able to execute scripts against AD to perform actions that their own user accounts are not allowed to do. Therefore I am using impersonation to switch the identity before creating the PowerShell runspace: Runspace runspace = RunspaceFactory.CreateRunspace(config); var currentuser = WindowsIdentity.GetCurrent().Name; if (runspace.RunspaceStateInfo.State == RunspaceState.BeforeOpen) { runspace.Open(); } I have tested using a domain admin account and I get the following exception when calling runspace.Open(): Security Exception Description: The application attempted to perform an operation not allowed by the security policy. To grant this application the required permission please contact your system administrator or change the application's trust level in the configuration file. Exception Details: System.Security.SecurityException: Requested registry access is not allowed. The web application is running in full trust and I have explicitly added the account I am using for impersonation to the local administrators group of the machine (even though the domain admins group was already there). I'm using advapi32.dll LogonUser call to perform the impersonation in a similar way to this post (http://blogs.msdn.com/webdav_101/archive/2008/09/25/howto-calling-exchange-powershell-from-an-impersonated-thead.aspx) Any help appreciated as this is a bit of a show stopper at the moment. • Can't place a breakpoint in asp.net master page file

  I have an MVC web application. I get an "Object reference not set to an instance of an object" error in line 16 below. It's a master page file. When I try to place a breakpoint in that line or anywhere in the file, I get a "this is not a valid location for a breakpoint" error. I have clicked on every line and I can't place a single breakpoint. I do have lines which have code only. How do I place a breakpoint in this file? Note: I can place breakpoints in code files. In some other aspx files, I can place a breakpoint in some code lines and some not. Does the inline code have to be in a special format to place a breakpoint? Using VS 2010 in Windows 7 64bit.   So i had a feature request to add fields to a second table row for a single data row on a GridView. At first, I looked at extending the functionality of the GridView but soon realized this would be a huge task and since I consider this request a shim for a larger future feature decided against it. Also want to move to MVC in the near future and this would be throw away code. Web site project (having web forms + code behind cs files, user controls + code behind cs files, master pages + code behind cs files) CustomTypesLayer a class library (having custom types, enumerations, DTOs, constructers, get, set and validations) BusinessLogicLayer a class library (having all business logic, rules and all calls to DAL functions) DataAccessLayer a class library( having just classes communicating to database.) -My user interface just calls BusinessLogicLayer. BusinessLogicLayer do proecessign in it self and for data it calls DataAccessLayer funtions. -Web forms do not calls directly DAL. -CustomTypesLayer is shared by all layers. Please guide me is this approach a pattern ? I though it may be MVC or MVP but pages have there code behind files as well which are confusing me. If it is no patren is it near to some patren ? pleaes guide thanks

• Building a Store Locator ASP.NET Application Using Google Maps API

  The past couple of projects I've been working on have included the use of the Google Maps API and geocoding service in websites for various reasons. I decided to tie together some of the lessons learned, build an ASP.NETstore locator demo, and write about it on 4Guys. Last week I published the first article in what I think will be a three-part series: Building a Store Locator ASP.NET Application Using Google Maps (Part 1). Part 1 walks through creating a demo where a user can type in an address and any stores within a (roughly) 15 mile area will be displayed in a grid.The article begins with a look at the database used to power the store locator (namely, a single table that contains one row for every location, with each location storing its store number, address, and, most important, latitude and longitude coordinates) and then turns to usingGoogle's geocoding service to translatea user-entered address into latitude and longitude coordinates. The latitude and longitude coordinates are used to find nearby stores, which are then displayed in a grid. Part 2 looks at enhancing the search results to include a map with markers indicating the position of each nearby store location. The Google Maps API, along with a bit of client-side script and server-side logic, make this actually pretty straightforward and easy to implement. Here's a screen shot of the improved store locator results. Part 3, which I plan on publishing next week, looks at how to enhance the map by using information windows to display address information when clicking a marker. Additionally, I'll show how to use custom icons for the markers so that instead of having the same marker for each nearby location the markers will be images numbered 1, 2, 3, and so on, which will correspond to a number assigned to each search result in the grid. The idea here is that by numbering the search results in the grid and the markers on the map visitors will quickly be able to see what marker corresponds to what search result. This article and demo has been a lot of fun to write and create, and I hope you enjoy reading it, too.   I've been trying to figure out the best way to custom render the <head> element of a pag to get rid of the extra line breaks which is caused by <head runat="server">, so its properly formatted. • Signed_request lost in ASP.NET session, confusing my website

  I have an ASP.NET MVC 3 website which is available both from a specific public url, and I'm also making be available as a Facebook App. Inside my website logic, in some places I have to determine whether the current request is from the Facebook-app, or from the public website, because I want to display content based on this environment. So, for eg. if the user is using my site as a facebook-app, then I want to display a picture, and if the user is using my site normally, then I don't wanna display a picture. To determine whether I'm from a Facebook app, I check the "signed_request" in the HttpContext.Request, and store it in the HttpSession to be available for my other actions, not just for that action (url) which is defined for my Facebook app. So when a child-action is executed, I can determine based on the Session, that the website is used as a FB-app or not. The problem happens, when the Session times out, because then althought the logic is still running inside Facebook, my logic thinks it's not inside Facebook. Any advice?

• How does an ASP.NET programmer go from working on/developing existing sites, to creating one from sc

  I've been an ASP.NET developer for some time, always working on existing ASP.NET pages, modifying functionality, adding features, tweaking things etc. but have never built a site up from scratch. I've read books on ASP.NET, and they generally talk you through the various features of ASP.NET with a mock up site, but it's always very basic and they jump straight in. The time has come however, to write a site from scratch for a client. I've never done this before. There are design considerations, but like a lot of ASP.NET sites, the basic idea is, you have a site, where users can log in, and save some information like their name and password and address. The site has some functionality, but that's the basic design of a majority of (business-related) asp.net websites I would wager. I know how to program in ASP.NET already on an existing site, but I don't know how to design my own properly that meets the criteria above. I guess the main worry is security. I don't know the best way to handle a simple log-in system that stores user information like their name and password. I understand there are a few approaches to this, but the catch with this project is that it has to be absolutely bulletproof. Maximum security. All those good practices for security, it needs to have them all. I'm not asking what they are, but I am asking where to begin. What should be the first steps after I do File New Project ? Where can I look for information about setting up a secure ASP.NET website? I'll figure out the content and page layout later, it's the framework that is the big thing. Any and all advice would be welcome. I really want to get my first from-scratch project right from the beginning. Just to confuse things, it's possible I will be using MVC, I am not sure if this has any impact.
