  • Should I be using abstract methods in this Python scenario?

    - by sfjedi
    I'm not sure my approach is good design and I'm hoping I can get a tip. I'm thinking somewhere along the lines of an abstract method, but in this case I want the method to be optional. This is how I'm doing it now... from pymel.core import * class A(object): def __init__(self, *args, **kwargs): if callable(self.createDrivers): self._drivers = self.createDrivers(*args, **kwargs) select(self._drivers) class B(A): def createDrivers(self, *args, **kwargs): c1 = circle(sweep=270)[0] c2 = circle(sweep=180)[0] return c1, c2 b = B() In the above example, I'm just creating 2 circle arcs in PyMEL for Maya, but I fully intend on creating more subclasses that may or may not have a createDrivers method at all! So I want it to be optional and I'm wondering if my approach is—well, if my approach could be improved?

  • apache commons http client efficiency

    - by wo_shi_ni_ba_ba
    I use apache commons http client to send data via post every second, is there a way to make the following code more efficient? I know http is stateless, but is there anything I can do to improve since the base url is always the same in this case(only the parameter value change. private void sendData(String s){ try { HttpClient client = getHttpClient(); HttpPost method = new HttpPost("http://192.168.1.100:8080/myapp"); System.err.println("send to server "+s); List formparams = new ArrayList(); formparams.add(new BasicNameValuePair("packet", s)); UrlEncodedFormEntity entity = new UrlEncodedFormEntity(formparams, "UTF-8"); method.setEntity(entity); HttpResponse resp=client.execute(method); String res = EntityUtils.toString(resp.getEntity()); System.out.println(res); } catch (Exception e) { e.printStackTrace(); } } private HttpClient getHttpClient() { if(httpClient==null){ httpClient = new DefaultHttpClient(); } return httpClient; }

  • Help with Linq and Generics

    - by Jonathan
    Hi to all. I'm triying to make a function that add a 'where' clause to a query based in a property and a value. This is a very simplefied version of my function. Private Function simplified(ByVal query As IQueryable(Of T), ByVal PValue As Long, ByVal p As PropertyInfo) As ObjectQuery(Of T) query = query.Where(Function(c) DirectCast(p.GetValue(c, Nothing), Long) = PValue) Dim t = query.ToList 'this line is only for testing, and here is the error raise Return query End Function The error message is: LINQ to Entities does not recognize the method 'System.Object CompareObjectEqual(System.Object, System.Object, Boolean)' method, and this method cannot be translated into a store expression. Looks like a can't use GetValue inside a linq query. Can I achieve this in other way? Post your answer in C#/VB. Chose the one that make you feel more confortable. Thanks

  • OO C++ - Virtual Methods

    - by Phorce
    Just a really quick question here. I'm using virtual functions to read in from a text file. Now, it's virtual because in one aspect I want the values to be normalised, and, in the other respect I don't want them to be normalised. I have tried to do this: bool readwav(string theFile, 'native'); So in theory, if the 'native' is used, this method should be called, however, if 'double' is called then a different version of the method is called. Same for if the value is empty, it should just perform the native option. First question, why doesn't the declaration above work? Also, is this the best route to go down? Or, would it be better to have just one class method that switches between the options. Thanks :)

  • What to log when an exception occurs?

    - by Rune
    public void EatDinner(string appetizer, string mainCourse, string dessert) { try { // Code } catch (Exception ex) { Logger.Log("Error in EatDinner", ex); return; } } When an exception occurs in a specific method, what should I be logging? I see a lot of the above in the code I work with. In these cases, I always have to talk to the person who experienced the error to find out what they were doing, step through the code, and try to reproduce the error. Is there any best practices or ways I can minimize all this extra work? Should I log the parameters in each method like this? Logger.Log("Params: " + appetizer + "," + mainCourse + "," + dessert, ex); Is there a better way to log the current environment? If I do it this way, will I need to write out all this stuff for each method I have in my application? Are there any best practices concerning scenarios like this?

  • Why is $file empty in custom symfony file validator?

    - by codecowboy
    I am setting a custom file validator for a file input field in Symfony 1.4 (Doctrine) $this-setValidator('filename', new sfValidatorFile(array( 'mime_types' = 'web_images', 'path' = sfConfig::get('sf_upload_dir').'/animals', 'validated_file_class' = 'CustomValidatedFile', 'required' =false ))); I then want to override the save method to generate some thumbnails: class CustomValidatedFile extends sfValidatedFile { private $savedFilename; // Override sfValidatedFile's save method public function save($file = null, $fileMode = 0666, $create = true, $dirMode = 0777) { $this-savedFilename = $this-generateFilename(); // This makes sure we use only one savedFilename (it will be the first) if ($this-savedFilename === null ) { $this-savedFilename = $file; } $thumbnail = new sfThumbnail(150,150); $thumbnail-loadFile($this-getTempName()); $thumbnail-save(sfConfig::get('sf_upload_dir').'/thumbnails/thumb_'.$this-savedFilename); // Let the original save method do its magic :) return parent::save($this->savedFilename, $fileMode, $create, $dirMode); } } This fails with the error "The file "" is not readable." This is coming from sfThumbnailPlugin because the value of $file is null. My question is why is $file null?

  • What is a recommended Android utility class collection?

    - by Sebastian Roth
    I often find myself writing very similar code across projects. And more often than not, I copy stuff over from old projects. Things like: Create images with round corners read density into a static variable & re-use. 4 lines.. disable / hide multiple views / remote views at once. Example: } public static void disableViews(RemoteViews views, int... ids) { for (int id : ids) { views.setInt(id, SET_VISIBILITY, View.GONE); } } public static void showViews(RemoteViews views, int... ids) { for (int id : ids) { views.setInt(id, SET_VISIBILITY, View.VISIBLE); } } I'd love to package these kind of functions into 1 letter / 2 letter class names, i.e. V.showViews(RemoteViews views, int... ids) would be easy to write & remember I hope. I'm searching for Github recommendations, links and if nothing is found, I perhaps will start a small project on github to collect.

  • Java Recursion Triangle Standing on Tip

    - by user1629075
    I was wondering how to create triangle out of asterisks on its tip rather than on its base. I have the code for making it stand on its base: public static String printTriangle (int count) { if( count <= 0 ) return ""; String p = printTriangle(count - 1); p = p + "*"; System.out.print(p); System.out.print("\n"); return p; } But then I'm stuck on how to have the greatest number of stars on the top, and then the next least, and so on. I was thinking something along the terms of having (count - p) to have the input of rows be subtracted from the amount of decrease, but then i was confused by this idea because p is string. EDIT: I tried changing the position of printTriangle(count - 1) using my original method without iterations and got 1 star per each line; how can I fix this? public class triangles { public static void main(String[] args) { printTriangle(5); } public static String printTriangle (int count) { if( count <= 0 ) return ""; String p = ""; p = p + "*"; System.out.print(p); System.out.print("\n"); p = printTriangle(count - 1); return p; } }

  • Why does Cache.Add return an object that represents the cached item?

    - by Pure.Krome
    From MSDN about the differences between Adding or Inserting an item the ASP.NET Cache: Note: The Add and Insert methods have the same signature, but there are subtle differences between them. First, calling the Add method returns an object that represents the cached item, while calling Insert does not. Second, their behavior is different if you call these methods and add an item to the Cache that is already stored there. The Insert method replaces the item, while the Add method fails. [emphasis mine] The second part is easy. No question about that. But with the first part, why would it want to return an object that represents the cached item? If I'm trying to Add an item to the cache, I already have/know what that item is? I don't get it. What is the reasoning behind this?

  • hibernate: com.mysql.jdbc.exceptions.jdbc4.MySQLIntegrityConstraintViolationException

    - by user121196
    when saving an object to database using hibernate, sometimes it fails because certain fields of the object exceed the maximum varchar length defined in the database. There force I am using the following approach: 1. attempt to save 2. if getting an DataException, then I truncate the fields in the object to the max length specified in the db definition, then try to save again. However, in the second save after truncation. I'm getting the following exception: hibernate: com.mysql.jdbc.exceptions.jdbc4.MySQLIntegrityConstraintViolationException: Cannot add or update a child row: a foreign key constraint fails here's the relevant code, what's wrong? public static void saveLenientObject(Object obj){ try { save2(rec); } catch (org.hibernate.exception.DataException e) { // TODO Auto-generated catch block e.printStackTrace(); saveLenientObject(rec, e); } catch (Exception e) { // TODO Auto-generated catch block e.printStackTrace(); } } private static void saveLenientObject(Object rec, DataException e) { Util.truncateObject(rec); System.out.println("after truncation "); save2(rec); } public static void save2(Object obj) throws Exception{ try{ beginTransaction(); getSession().save(obj); commitTransaction(); }catch(Exception e){ e.printStackTrace(); rollbackTransaction(); //closeSession(); throw e; }finally{ closeSession(); } }

  • XAML Converter ConvertBack

    - by MFH
    Is there a way to access the ConvertBack-Method of a Converter that implements IValueConverter directly from XAML? The basic situation is the following (relationsships): Route (1)<->(CN) Training (1)<->(CN) Kilometer The DataContext is set to a Training. From here I use the Convert-Method to access all my Kilometers. I also have a Converter from Route to IList<Training> and the ConvertBack would lookup the Route for a Training. But I seem to not be able to access that Method from XAML…

  • Java: over-typed structures?

    - by HH
    Term over-type structure = a data structure that accepts different types, can be primitive or user-defined. I think ruby supports many types in structures such as tables. I tried a table with types 'String', 'char' and 'File' in Java but errs. How can I have over-typed structure in Java? How to show types in declaration? What about in initilization? Suppose a structure: INDEX VAR FILETYPE //0 -> file FILE //1 -> lineMap SizeSequence //2 -> type char //3 -> binary boolean //4 -> name String //5 -> path String Code import java.io.*; import java.util.*; public class Object { public static void print(char a) { System.out.println(a); } public static void print(String s) { System.out.println(s); } public static void main(String[] args) { Object[] d = new Object[6]; d[0] = new File("."); d[2] = 'T'; d[4] = "."; print(d[2]); print(d[4]); } } Errors Object.java:18: incompatible types found : java.io.File required: Object d[0] = new File("."); ^ Object.java:19: incompatible types found : char required: Object d[2] = 'T'; ^

  • Writing an optimised and efficient search engine with mySQL and ColdFusion

    - by Mel
    I have a search page with the following scenarios listed below. I was told there was a better way to do it, but not how, and that I am using too many if statements, and that it's prone to causing an error through url manipulation: Search.cfm will processes a search made from a search bar present on all pages, with one search input (titleName). If search.cfm is accessed manually (through URL not through using the simple search bar on all pages) it displays an advanced search form with three inputs (titleName, genreID, platformID) or it evaluates searchResponse variable and decides what to do. If simple search query is blank, has no results, or less than 3 characters it displays an error If advanced search query is blank, has no results, or less than 3 characters it displays an error If any successful search returns results, they come back normally. The top-of-page logic is as follows: <!---SET DEFAULT VARIABLE---> <cfparam name="variables.searchResponse" default=""> <!---CHECK TO SEE IF SIMPLE SEARCH A FORM WAS SUBMITTED AND EXECUTE SEARCH IF IT WAS---> <cfif IsDefined("Form.simpleSearch") AND Len(Trim(Form.titleName)) LTE 2> <cfset variables.searchResponse = "invalidString"> <cfelseif IsDefined("Form.simpleSearch") AND Len(Trim(Form.titleName)) GTE 3> <!---EXECUTE METHOD AND GET DATA---> <cfinvoke component="myComponent" method="simpleSearch" searchString="#Form.titleName#" returnvariable="simpleSearchResult"> <cfset variables.searchResponse = "simpleSearchResult"> </cfif> <!---CHECK IF ANY RECORDS WERE FOUND---> <cfif IsDefined("variables.simpleSearchResult") AND simpleSearchResult.RecordCount IS 0> <cfset variables.searchResponse = "noResult"> </cfif> <!---CHECK IF ADVANCED SEARCH FORM WAS SUBMITTED---> <cfif IsDefined("Form.AdvancedSearch") AND Len(Trim(Form.titleName)) LTE 2> <cfset variables.searchResponse = "invalidString"> <cfelseif IsDefined("Form.advancedSearch") AND Len(Trim(Form.titleName)) GTE 2> <!---EXECUTE METHOD AND GET DATA---> <cfinvoke component="myComponent" method="advancedSearch" returnvariable="advancedSearchResult" titleName="#Form.titleName#" genreID="#Form.genreID#" platformID="#Form.platformID#"> <cfset variables.searchResponse = "advancedSearchResult"> </cfif> <!---CHECK IF ANY RECORDS WERE FOUND---> <cfif IsDefined("variables.advancedSearchResult") AND advancedSearchResult.RecordCount IS 0> <cfset variables.searchResponse = "noResult"> </cfif> I'm using the searchResponse variable to decide what the the page displays, based on the following scenarios: <!---ALWAYS DISPLAY SIMPLE SEARCH BAR AS IT'S PART OF THE HEADER---> <form name="simpleSearch" action="search.cfm" method="post"> <input type="hidden" name="simpleSearch" /> <input type="text" name="titleName" /> <input type="button" value="Search" onclick="form.submit()" /> </form> <!---IF NO SEARCH WAS SUBMITTED DISPLAY DEFAULT FORM---> <cfif searchResponse IS ""> <h1>Advanced Search</h1> <!---DISPLAY FORM---> <form name="advancedSearch" action="search.cfm" method="post"> <input type="hidden" name="advancedSearch" /> <input type="text" name="titleName" /> <input type="text" name="genreID" /> <input type="text" name="platformID" /> <input type="button" value="Search" onclick="form.submit()" /> </form> </cfif> <!---IF SEARCH IS BLANK OR LESS THAN 3 CHARACTERS DISPLAY ERROR MESSAGE---> <cfif searchResponse IS "invalidString"> <cfoutput> <h1>INVALID SEARCH</h1> </cfoutput> </cfif> <!---IF SEARCH WAS MADE BUT NO RESULTS WERE FOUND---> <cfif searchResponse IS "noResult"> <cfoutput> <h1>NO RESULT FOUND</h1> </cfoutput> </cfif> <!---IF SIMPLE SEARCH WAS MADE A RESULT WAS FOUND---> <cfif searchResponse IS "simpleSearchResult"> <cfoutput> <h1>Search Results</h1> </cfoutput> <cfoutput query="simpleSearchResult"> <!---DISPLAY QUERY DATA---> </cfoutput> </cfif> <!---IF ADVANCED SEARCH WAS MADE A RESULT WAS FOUND---> <cfif searchResponse IS "advancedSearchResult"> <cfoutput> <h1>Search Results</h1> <p>Your search for "#Form.titleName#" returned #advancedSearchResult.RecordCount# result(s).</p> </cfoutput> <cfoutput query="advancedSearchResult"> <!---DISPLAY QUERY DATA---> </cfoutput> </cfif> Is my logic a) not efficient because my if statements/is there a better way to do this? And b) Can you see any scenarios where my code can break? I've tested it but I have not been able to find any issues with it. And I have no way of measuring performance. Any thoughts and ideas would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks

  • Check if edit is valid for database ms-access

    - by twodayslate
    I want to be able to check if I can edit a cell in a database with a new object Example method declaration: something.isValid(Object newObject, row, column); Example cases: If the editing cell stores an Number and I give it a String, the method will return false... If the editing cell has to be different than every other entry and the new object is the same as something else, the method will also return false.... My main goal... I want to check a whole row, and if everything is valid, I will edit the whole row. Right now, the only way I can find out if I can actually edit something is by actually editing it and seeing if I get an error.

  • Javascript: Access the right scope "under" apply(...)

    - by Chau
    This is a very old problem, but I cannot seem to get my head around the other solutions presented here. I have an object function ObjA() { var a = 1; this.methodA = function() { alert(a); } } which is instantiated like var myObjA = new ObjA(); Later on, I assign my methodA as a handler function in an external Javascript Framework, which invokes it using the apply(...) method. When the external framework executes my methodA, this belongs to the framework function invoking my method. Since I cannot change how my method is called, how do I regain access to the private variable a? My research tells me, that closures might be what I'm looking for.

  • Can you pass parameters for OnAction in MS Project VBA?

    - by Anne Schuessler
    The way I can define a method to be executed with OnAction in VBA with Microsoft Project is as follows (and works correctly): .OnAction = "Macro ""DoSomething""" ... where DoSomething is the method to execute. I would like to pass a parameter to that method but can't find a way to pass it with this syntax. Does anybody have an idea how to do this? I'm getting the feeling that this is an impossible task, but maybe there's some VBA secret I'm not aware of. Please note that VBA in MS Project seems to have its quirks and is slightly different than VBA for Excel or Access. This seems to be the case for the OnAction property which needs the extra Macro keyword to work correctly. If I'm wrong here please enlighten me.

  • PHPUnit test for error thrown with wrong argument type

    - by Spencer Mark
    I'm just starting with PHPUnit and am ok with all assert* methods, but can't figure out how to test for error thrown when the wrong argument is provided to the method - say hinted with array like so: public function(array $list) { } and then tested with null as argument. Could someone please provide an example of how to test for this sort of errors? I've checked quite a few posts on stackoverflow, but couldn't find the answer to this specific issue. Edit Ok - just to give you an idea of what I'm testing - here's the ArrayHelper::removeIfValueIsEmpty() method: public static function removeIfValueIsEmpty(array $array) { if (empty($array)) { return array(); } return array_filter($array, function($value) { return !Helper::isEmpty($value); }); } and now test: class ArrayHelperTest extends PHPUnit_Framework_TestCase { public function testRemoveIfValueIsEmpty() { $this->assertEmpty( \Cmd\Helper\ArrayHelper::removeIfValueIsEmpty(null), '\Cmd\Helper\ArrayHelper::removeIfValueIsEmpty method failed (checking with null as argument)' ); } } This throws an error: PHPUnit_Framework_Error : Argument 1 passed to Cmd\Helper\ArrayHelper::removeIfValueIsEmpty() must be of the type array, null given

  • how to call a C++ dll from C# windows application project

    - by chathuradd
    I have created a dll in C++ using a Class Library project in Visual Studio. I need to call a method in the dll from a C# application. I got to know there are 2 approches. One is to add the dll project reference to C# project or use DllExport to export method. However when I tried in both ways it always gives the following error when the dll method is called in runtime. An unhandled exception of type 'System.BadImageFormatException' occurred in TestClient.exe Additional information: An attempt was made to load a program with an incorrect format. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x8007000B) Can i know how to avoid this problem ? Thanks in advance!

  • Need advice on C++ coding pattern

    - by Kotti
    Hi! I have a working prototype of a game engine and right now I'm doing some refactoring. What I'm asking for is your opinion on usage of the following C++ coding patterns. I have implemented some trivial algorithms for collision detection and they are implemented the following way: Not shown here - class constructor is made private and using algorithms looks like Algorithm::HandleInnerCollision(...) struct Algorithm { // Private routines static bool is_inside(Point& p, Object& object) { // (...) } public: /** * Handle collision where the moving object should be always * located inside the static object * * @param MovingObject & mobject * @param const StaticObject & sobject * @return void * @see */ static void HandleInnerCollision(MovingObject& mobject, const StaticObject& sobject) { // (...) } So, my question is - somebody advised me to do it "the C++" way - so that all functions are wrapped in a namespace, but not in a class. Is there some good way to preserve privating if I will wrap them into a namespace as adviced? What I want to have is a simple interface and ability to call functions as Algorithm::HandleInnerCollision(...) while not polluting the namespace with other functions such as is_inside(...) Of, if you can advise any alternative design pattern for such kind of logics, I would really appreciate that...
