  • Why aren't Java's generics implicitly polymorphic?

    I'm a bit confused about how Java generics handle inheritance / polymorphism. Assume the following hierarchy - Animal (Parent) Dog - Cat (Children) So suppose I have a method doSomething(List<Animal> animals). By all the rules of inheritance and polymorphism, I would assume that a List<Dog> is a List<Animal> and a List<Cat> is a List<Animal> - and so either one could be passed to this method. Not so. If I want to achieve this behavior, I have to explicitly tell the method to accept a list of any subset of Animal by saying doSomething(List<? extends Animal> animals). I understand that this is Java's behavior. My question is why? Why is polymorphism generally implicit, but when it comes to generics it must be specified?

  • How to send java.util.logging to log4j?

    I have an existing application which does all of its logging against log4j. We use a number of other libraries that either also use log4j, or log against Commons Logging, which ends up using log4j under the covers in our environment. One of our dependencies even logs against slf4j, which also works fine since it eventually delegates to log4j as well. Now, I'd like to add ehcache to this application for some caching needs. Previous versions of ehcache used commons-logging, which would have worked perfectly in this scenario, but as of version 1.6-beta1 they have removed the dependency on commons-logging and replaced it with java.util.logging instead. Not really being familiar with the built-in JDK logging available with java.util.logging, is there an easy way to have any log messages sent to JUL logged against log4j, so I can use my existing configuration and set up for any logging coming from ehcache? Looking at the javadocs for JUL, it looks like I could set up a bunch of environment variables to change which LogManager implementation is used, and perhaps use that to wrap log4j Loggers in the JUL Logger class. Is this the correct approach? Kind of ironic that a library's use of built-in JDK logging would cause such a headache when (most of) the rest of the world is using 3rd party libraries instead.

    I would like to create an app such that I can send an email with a JPEG attachment and then display it on my site. I am fairly certain that the Mail API allows me to do this, but if it isn't possible please let me know. My biggest concern is what are the limits on the attachment size my app can receive, and what are the quotas related to receiving email? The email quotas I saw seemed to specify quotas for outgoing email. Is it different for incoming mail?

  • Why Is Java Missing Access Specifiers?

    Does anyone understand why Java is missing: An access specifier which allows access by the class and all subclasses, but NOT by other classes in the same package? (Protected-minus) An access specifier which allows access by the class, all classes in the same package, AND all classes in any sub-package? (Default-plus) An access specifier which adds classes in sub-packages to the entities currently allowed access by protected? (Protected-plus) I wish I had more choices than protected and default. In particular, I'm interested in the Protected-plus option. Say I want to use a Builder/Factory patterned class to produce an object with many links to other objects. The constructors on the objects are all default, because I want to force you to use the factory class to produce instances, in order to make sure the linking is done correctly. I want to group the factories in a sub-package to keep them all together and distinct from the objects they are instantiating---this just seems like a cleaner package structure to me. No can do, currently. I have to put the builders in the same package as the objects they are constructing, in order to gain the access to defaults. But separating project.area.objects from project.area.objects.builders would be so nice. So why is Java lacking these options? And, is there anyway to fake it?

    Hi, I'm doing the first chapter exercises on my Java book and I have been stuck for a problem for a while now. I'll print the question, prompt/read a double value representing a monetary amount. Then determine the fewest number of each bill and coin needed to represent that amount, starting with the highest (assume that a ten dollar bill is the maximum size needed). For example, if the value entered is 47,63 (forty-seven dollars and sixty-three cents), and the program should print the equivalent amount as: 4 ten dollar bills 1 five dollar bills 2 one dollar bills 2 quarters 1 dimes 0 nickels 3 pennies" etc. I'm doing an example exactly as they said in order to get an idea, as you will see in the code. Nevertheless, I managed to print 4 dollars, and I can't figure out how to get "1 five dollar", only 7 dollars (see code). Please, don't do the whole code for me. I just need some advice in regards to what I said. I want to plot them all on my map, but I want to give condos and houses different marker icons( blue marker for condos, green marker for houses ). Problem I have is - figuring out how to distinguish between types of markers when I $.each() through them.   • Java: Writing a DOM to an XML file (formatting issues)

    I'm using org.w3c XML API to open an existing XML file. I'm removing some nodes , and I'm adding others instead . The problem is that the new nodes that are added are written one after another , with no newline and no indentation what so ever. While it's true that the XML file is valid , it is very hard for a human to examnine it. Is there anyway to add indentation , or at least a newline after each node ?

  • How can I call multiple nutrient information from ESHA Research API? (apid.esha.com)

    I want to call ESHA Research nutrient REST API. I cannot seem to figure out how to call multiple nutrients using ESHA REST API. So far I am calling the following and only able to retrieve the calories, or protein, or another type of nutrient information. So I was hoping someone had experience in retrieving all the nutrient information with one call. Is this possible? This is how I call to retrieve the TWIX nutrient http://api.esha.com/analysis?apikey=xxxx&fo=urn:uuid:81d268ac-f1dc-4991-98c1-1b4d3a5006da (returns calories, please note the api key is not xxxx but instead a key generated from Esha once you sign up as developer) The return is JSON format. If I want to call fat it would be the following http://api.esha.com/analysis?apikey=xxxx&fo=urn:uuid:81d268ac-f1dc-4991-98c1-1b4d3a5006da&n=urn:uuid:589294dc-3dcc-4b64-be06-c07e7f65c4bd How can I make a call once and get a return of all the nutrients (so Fat, Calories, Carbs, Vitamins, etc..) for a particular food ID?   • Avoiding instanceof in Java

    Having a chain of "instanceof" operations is considered a "code smell". The standard answer is "use polymorphism". How would I do it in this case? There are a number of subclasses of a base class; none of them are under my control. An analogous situation would be with the Java classes Integer, Double, BigDecimal etc. if (obj instanceof Integer) {NumberStuff.handle((Integer)obj);} else if (obj instanceof BigDecimal) {BigDecimalStuff.handle((BigDecimal)obj);} else if (obj instanceof Double) {DoubleStuff.handle((Double)obj);} I do have control over NumberStuff and so on. I don't want to use many lines of code where a few lines would do. (Sometimes I make a HashMap mapping Integer.class to an instance of IntegerStuff, BigDecimal.class to an instance of BigDecimalStuff etc. But today I want something simpler.) I'd like something as simple as this: public static handle(Integer num) { ... } public static handle(BigDecimal num) { ... } But Java just doesn't work that way. I'd like to use static methods when formatting. The things I'm formatting are composite, where a Thing1 can contain an array Thing2s and a Thing2 can contain an array of Thing1s. I had a problem when I implemented my formatters like this: class Thing1Formatter { private static Thing2Formatter thing2Formatter = new Thing2Formatter(); public format(Thing thing) { thing2Formatter.format(thing.innerThing2); } } class Thing2Formatter { private static Thing1Formatter thing1Formatter = new Thing1Formatter(); public format(Thing2 thing) { thing1Formatter.format(thing.innerThing1); } } Yes, I know the HashMap and a bit more code can fix that too. But the "instanceof" seems so readable and maintainable by comparison. Is there anything simple but not smelly?

  • How to create a datastore.Text object out of an array of dynamically created Strings?

    I am creating a Google App Engine server for a project where I receive a large quantity of data via an HTTP POST request. The data is separated into lines, with 200 characters per line. The number of lines can go into the hundreds, so 10's of thousands of characters total. What I want to do is concatenate all of those lines into a single Text object, since Strings have a maximum length of 500 characters but the Text object can be as large as 1MB. Here is what I thought of so far: public void doPost(HttpServletRequest req, HttpServletResponse resp) { ... String[] audioSampleData = new String[numberOfLines]; for (int i = 0; i < numberOfLines; i++) { audioSampleData[i] = req.getReader().readLine(); } com.google.appengine.api.datastore.Text textAudioSampleData = new Text(audioSampleData[0] + audioSampleData[1] + ...); ... } But as you can see, I don't know how to do this without knowing the number of lines before-hand. Is there a way for me to iterate through the String indexes within the Text constructor? I can't seem to find anything on that. Of note is that the Text object can't be modified after being created, and it must have a String as parameter for the constructor. (Documentation here) Is there any way to this? I need all of the data in the String array in one Text object. Many Thanks!

I can see the code flow is: URL.openConnection() - sun.net.www.protocol.http.Handler.openConnection() I have two questions about this First In URL.openConnection() the code is: public URLConnection openConnection() throws java.io.IOException { return handler.openConnection(this); } handler is an object of URLStreamHandler, define as blow transient URLStreamHandler handler; But URLStreamHandler is a abstract class and method openConnection() is not implement in it so when handler calls this method, it should go to find a subclass who implement this method, right? But there are a lot classes who implement this methods in sun.net.www.protocol (like http.Hanlder, ftp.Handler ) How should the code know which "openConnection" method it should call? In this example, this handler.openConnection() will go into http.Handler and it is correct. (if I set the url as ftp://www.google.com, it will go into ftp.Handler) I cannot understand the mechanism. second. I have attached the source code so I can step into the JDK and see the variables but for many classes like sun.net.www.protocol.http.Handler, there are not source code in src.zip. I googled this class and there is source code online I can get but why they did not put it (and many other classes) in the src.zip? Where can I find a comprehensive version of source code? Thanks!

    I have an Android app that communicates over a TCP socket with a server I wrote. The method I'm using now to read and write output works fine for smaller strings (up to 60kB) but I get an exception thrown when the string is much longer than that.     I have a Java applet that creates a new non-daemon thread like so: Thread childThread = new Thread(new MyRunnable(_this)); childThread.setDaemon(false); childThread.start(); Then my MyRunnable object calls a native method that is implemented in C++: @Override public void run() { while (true) { if (!ran) { System.out.println("isDaemon: " + Thread.currentThread().isDaemon()); _applet.invokePrintManager(_applet.fFormType, _applet.fFormName, _applet.fPrintImmediately, _applet.fDataSet); ran = true; } } } This C++ method calls into a C# DLL that shows a form. My problem is, whenever the user navigates away from the page with a Java applet on it, JVM (and my C# form) is killed. I need the form and JVM to remain open until it is closed by the user. I tried setting my thread to be a non-daemon thread, which is working because System.out.println("isDaemon: " + Thread.currentThread().isDaemon() prints isDaemon: false. Is there something related to the way that the C# form is created (is there another thread I'm not accounting for) or something I am overlooking?? My thread is not a daemon thread, but the JVM is being killed anyways.

    Hello, does anyone know how to disable the creation of birthday events in Outlook 2010? Here is my setup and what causes the problem: I have 2 computers and one mobile which all sync through a googlemail account. But after also synching the contacts, each Outlook instance creates a birthday event for that contact. So I end up with 2 Birthday reminders. Is it possible to tell one of the PCs to not enter birthdays into the calendar? Greetings Niklas

  • Local Flash in Chrome pepper player won't link to internet

    I have a local .swf file in a local .html file. The flash file opens a popup window when a link is clicked. In Chrome, when I open the html file and click the button, nothing happens. Then when I go to about:plugins and disable the top Flash player (the pepper one) then try refresh and try clicking the button again, nothing happens. Then when I go to http://www.macromedia.com/support/documentation/en/flashplayer/help/settings_manager04.html and add the the folder the files are stored in to the list and refresh the page and click the button again, it opens the popup. When I re-enable the pepper flash player, and re-add the folder to the allowed list in flash (it's gone from the list now that I changed players), refresh the page and click the button again, it does nothing. I don't know why it won't open with the pepper player. I'm using Windows 7, Chrome 22.0.1229.94 m, Pepper Flash player 11.4.31.110, and regular Flash Player 11,4,402,287.

  • Syncing Music Everywhere with Google Music and iTunes Match - Will This Work?

    I have the following devices: Personal Laptop running Windows 7/Ubuntu 11.10 (mostly use Ubuntu) Media Server running Windows 7 with PS3 Media Server and iTunes Work Laptop running OSX Snow Leopard iPad iPhone 4S The iPhone just replaced my Droid 2 Global. What I had been doing was using Google Music to watch the folders iTunes was storing music in and moving any new files up to Google Music. The Droid would pull music down from the cloud via streaming or me telling it to make it available offline, I had folders set up with PS3 Media Server to stream them to TV's via DLNA, and used RDP to play music through my speakers in the office. So far it's worked well. Since I've replaced the Droid 2 though with an iPhone, I've lost the syncing ability with Google Music and have to do it via iTunes (I knew this would happen, no big suprise). I got to thinking though - Apple does offer iTunes Match, which allows your devices to stream/download the music from 'the cloud,' much like Google Music. I could then listen to whatever I Wanted (for the most part) on my phone, iPad, and laptops by syncing via iTunes Match. I don't want to loose my MP3s though, and since I've never used iTunes Match, I wonder if the following is a viable solution: Sign up for iTunes Match on my media server Let it scan my library and make available my songs in AAC in the cloud Not delete the media server MP3s Set up other devices to sync to iTunes Match Continue to get MP3s via Amazon or other services and add to iTunes Let the MP3s sync to Google Music, and let the MP3's add to the AAC versions on my devices I think the main kicker is I don't want to lose the MP3 versions of my songs as those will work just fine on all my devices and I generally rip at 320kbps. I don't mind spending $25/year if it means that I can easily shift the music from device to device without much thinking, but I'm not going to pay $25/year to end up converting my library over to AAC just to save myself the hassle of manually syncing my iPad and iPhone.

  • How do I make Chrome's Omnibar behave more like the Firefox Awesome bar?

    One of my favorite features of the Firefox awesome bar is that I can simply type a substring of any URL or page title in my history and it finds all matches sorted by how frequently they were accessed. Example: I simply type "ask" when I want to ask something on stackoverflow.com., "inbox" goes to my GMail Inbox and so on because the substring matches any part of the URL or the page title. Chrome's Omnibar is quite frustrating in this area. I am not able to predict what it's gonna fetch and I seem to have no way to train the thing to do my bidding. I have turned unchecked the option that says: "Use a suggestion service to help complete searches and URLs typed..." but there has been no noticeable improvement. Any clues how I can make the Omnibar behave?
