• MSDN Live 2010 &ndash; Delivered : 24 sessions (4 x 6) on Visual Studio and Team Foundation Server

  We (Mikael Nitell and me) got a whole track on the Norwegian MSDN Live tour this year.  We did these as a pair, and covered 4 cities over 4 days, 6 sessions per day, taking 8 hours to come through it.  The Islandic volcano made the travels a bit rough, but we managed 6 flights out of 8. The first one had to go by van instead, 7-8 hour drive each way together with other MSDN Live presenters – a memorable tour! Oslo was the absolute top point.  We had to change hall to a bigger one. People were crowding, and even the big hall was packed!  The presentations were mostly based on demos, but we had a few slides as well.  They have been uploaded to my SkyDrive.  Info to aliens – some of the text may be Norwegian. These entries will also contain stuff we had to remove from the actual presentations due to the time constraints. We managed to create recordings of two of the sessions, which will be uploaded to Channel 9 by Microsoft, afaik.   I will update this blog with information about exact locations when that is done. • Why are some PNGs open in Photoshop with Indexed Colors and no transparency?

  Why are some 32 bit PNGs opened in Photoshop with Indexed Colors and no transparency? For instance, I grabbed a png icon file of the Stack Overflow logo at: http://blog.stackoverflow.com/wp-content/uploads/icon-so.png When opening it in Photoshop CS3, it apparently treats it as indexed color and gets rid of the alpha channel. The image on the right is a screen grab of the icon. Changing the Image mode in Photoshop to RGB doesn't change the image at all. I've tried this with a few other PNGs and it seems hit or miss. When viewed in other programs, it displays fine. left:png opened in Photoshop, right:screen grab of png from browser What gives?, does Photoshop not interpret the PNG file format correctly?

• Azure Search Preview

  One of the things I’ve been keeping an eye on for quite a while now is the development of the Azure Search system. While it’s not a full replacement for the full-text indexing service in SQL Server on-premises as yet, it’s a really, really good start. Liam Cavanagh, Pablo Castro and the team have done a great job bringing this to the preview stage and I suspect it could be quite popular. I was very impressed by how they incorporated quite a bit of feedback I gave them early on, and I’m sure that others involved would have felt the same. There are two tiers at present. One is a free tier and has shared resources; the other is currently $125/month and has reserved resources. I would like to see another tier between these two, much the same way that Azure websites work. If you have any feedback on this, now would be a good time to make it known. In the meantime, given there is a free tier, there’s no excuse to not get out and try it. • IE Sessions in Terminal Server

  Currently we are using WADE middleware for our order processing operation. We have about 40 operators that use 1 terminal server to open IE 8 to access the WADE middleware. To me, it's random, but every now and then someone will come to me and tell me that IE has a "Page cannot be displayed" or "HTTP Error 500" error. I did a bit of testing on my local machine and I never get this error while doing normal operations. Although, when I open one session with username "test" and then login to the wade admin console as admin, I run into problems. I do not run into problems until I logout of the wade admin. Once I logout of the Wade admin, my "test" session says "page cannot be displayed". This makes me think the IE user sessions on the terminal service are cross talking. Does anyone have any possible settings I can change in IE or do you think this is an issue with the middleware? The Terminal Server is Windows 2003, btw.

• How to Figure AdSense PPC with AdWords CPC of $0.05

  Often when I am using the Adwords Keyword tool I find keywords with a CPC of $0.05... I mean VERY often. Is this like base level when it comes to PPC or is this a possible error? For example, with a few keywords I have targetted with a 0.05 CPC, I often find a PPC of 0.25 or more. Obviously, this is because my content is triggering other keywords, although it is centered around a 0.05 keyword. I have found several keywords that have over 200,000 searches using the [exact] search parameter but have a CPC of $0.05. I plan on writing content to cover these keywords, but I am trying to figure the approximate value of these keywords. 0.05 leads me to believe there are no advertisers so IF someone were to advertise and use this keyword, it would cost them ~0.05. But since there is obviously no demand for these keywords and thus they aren't getting bids, other ads MUST be shown. How can I predict the value of ads with a CPC of $0.05? Strange question I know, but I'm just trying to understand this a bit more.

  I am facing a problem while trying to install Java 7 on Ubuntu. The following are the steps that I performed for installing: I installed the setup file from the link given below: wget http://download.oracle.com/otn-pub/java/jdk/7u1-b08/jdk-7u1-linux-x64.tar.gz I have a file: jdk-7u1-linux-x64.tar.gz I Untared it: tar -xvf jdk-7u1-linux-x64.tar.gz sudo mv ./jdk1.7.0_01 /usr/lib/jvm/jdk1.7.0_01 sudo update-alternatives –config java Here it gave me the following output: There is only one alternative in link group java: /usr/lib/jvm/java-6-sun/jre/bin/java Nothing to configure. sudo update-alternatives --install /usr/bin/java java /usr/lib/jvm/jdk1.7.0_01/jre/bin/java 1(I entered 1 here.) sudo update-alternatives --config java java -version. It showed the following output java version "1.6.0_26" Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_26-b03) Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 20.1-b02, mixed mode) I am not sure if jdk1.7.0 is installed as its showing the version as 1.6.0_26.

• What's the best way to format an external HDD for both OSX and Windows ?

  I have an external HDD (1TB) and I'd like to use it on OSX and Windows. I had another external HDD using NTFS and I used NTFS-3G on osx to write files, but I found the reading/writing very slow. Googling a bit I see many people recommend HFS+ in conjuction with HFS Explorer for Windows. Is this the best way ? Is it possible to have two partitions, one HFS+ and one NTFS ? Is it a good option or is it better to use one partition ? I've seen this thread on using UDF for USB flash drive. Would that be suited for an USB external HDD ?

• jZip isn't integrating with Windows 7 shell

  I installed jZip in my new windows 7 64 bit OS. but it doesn't seem to integrate with the shell. It doesn't appear in the right click menu on any file(not even zip files). To zip a file I have to open jZip go to file-new and browse for the files and to extract compressed files I have to open the file in jZip then click on extract, there is no right click menu integration what so ever, although It used to have when I had jZip on the Windows 7 RC. I reinstalled checking the settings incase I made a mistake but I checked shell integration while installation. Don't know what it wrong? anyone know how I should solve this. Help..? Thanks!

• Cannot install Ubuntu on an Acer Aspire One 756

  I have used Ubuntu before, in virtual machines, but today I decided to make the leap and I bought a netbook to install Ubuntu as a "real" OS alongside Windows. The netbook I bought is an Acer Aspire One 756, with a 64-bit Intel processor, 4GB RAM, and Windows 8 as the default OS. I have now encountered several obstacles that actually prevent me from installing Ubuntu 12.10. Here are all the things I have tried so far: Used a live CD, in combination with a USB DVD drive. (I should point out that the Aspire One does not have an optical drive.) The computer does not boot in Ubuntu; the drive keeps spinning, but nothing happens, even though I changed the boot order in the BIOS. Used a USB drive created via the tool available on pendrivelinux.com. Again, I've made changes to the BIOS to make sure the computer tries to boot from USB before using the built-in HDD. The results vary in this case: sometimes, the computer keeps rebooting like crazy until I remove the USB drive, at which point the computer boots into Windows 8, as expected. If I use a different USB drive, I get an error message that says that the USB drive has been blocked due to "the current security policy". Tried to install Ubuntu via Wubi. The program appears to install something, but at some point during the installation process, I get a non-specified error message and nothing else happens. I am not sure if these are known issues; in any case, searching the forum has not yielded any results, so I thought I should simply describe my problem here in the hope that this question has not been answered before. I would greatly appreciate any help with this annoying problem. Of course, if anything is unclear, do not hesitate to ask for further details.

• Kinect Hacking at Microsoft Developer Days 2012 Bulgaria

  Last week I had a pleasure to speak at the Microsoft’s Developer Days 2012 in Sophia, Bulgaria. It was a great conference and I met lots of cool people there. I did a session about Kinect Hacking. My goal was to give a good understanding of Kinect inner workings, how it can be used to develop Windows applications. Later I showed examples of interesting projects utilizing the full potential the Kinect sensor. Below you can find my slides and source code of one of the demos (the one where “Szymon went to the Moon”). But I wasn’t the only one to talk about Kinect. On the 2nd day Rob Miles also did a fun session titled “Kinect Mayhem: Psychedelic Ghost Cameras, Virtual Mallets, a Kiss Detector and a Head Tapping Game” (you can watch recording of this session from TechDays Netherlands on Channel9). Later that day Yishai Galatzer made a big surprise during his session about Extending WebMatrix, and showed a plugin enabling to take control of WebMatrix with Kinect gestures. Best thing was that he wrote it during the conference, with no previous experience with Kinect SDK (I might helped him a bit to get started). Thanks for the invitation and I hope to see you soon!

• Change date in a SQL query to reference a cell in Excel

  I have the following code that returns the needed data into excel and manually changing the date will change the returned data; however, I'd like to reference a cell with a formula that will make the query a bit more user friendly. I've tried using my limited knowledge of referencing a cell but none have worked.   I have the same Problem as described here: Disable spell checking in Internet Explorer 10 (Windows 8) My system: Windows 8.1 Pro 64-bit What I've already done: Deactivating the spelling options: (There may be minor differences between the following screenshot and the actual 8.1 display. I copied it from here because I own a German Version and I therefore thought that an English one would be simpler to understand.) I turned both options off and tried to restart IE. It's still "correcting" my texts. Searching for 'spelling correction' addons As said in the picture, this entry does not exist on my PC. (The following screenshot is taken from here) Is there any way of disabling it? I prefer an "official" solution if one is available. Otherwise, I also take any registry involving Solutions.

• How do I implement movement in a WPF Adventure game?

  I'm working on making a short WPF adventure game. The only major hurdle I have right now is how to animate objects on the screen correctly. I've experimented with DoubleAnimation and ThicknessAnimation both enable movement of the character, but the speed is a bit erratic. The objects I'm trying to move around are labels in a grid, I'm checking the mouse's position in terms of the canvas I have the grid in. Does anyone have any suggestions for coding the movement, while still allowing mouse clicks to pick up items when needed? It would be nice if I could continue using the Visual Studio GUI Editor. By the way, I'm fine with scrapping labels in a grid for a more ideal object to manipulate. • Booting Error while using 12.04 booting from GRUB

  my name is Paul. I have encountered an issue relating to GRUB booting and the booting process in general. I have been running Ubuntu 12.04 LTS on my machine for quite a while. Before that, i had (before) 10.04, 11.04, 11.10, etc. I have been running Ubuntu, in general, but more specifically 12.04 for a long time with little to no problems. The problem: Earlier today, i was using my machine and then decided to take a little break. I shut down my machine (laptop, in case anyone was wondering) and left. Later, I came back ready to start it up and continue. I started it up and it took me to the Toshiba screen (like normal) then to the GRUB screen. I guessed that nothing was truly wrong, and chose the first option (something around the lines of: Ubuntu, with linux 3.22.0-35-generic). I waited for a bit and it still displayed the same purple screen. I restarted it and now chose the option like the first but with recovery at the end. Same result. Later, I waited longer and found that my computer came up with a bunch of lines of script. I waited longer but nothing new happened. What are your suggestions as to fix this problem? I will let my computer run overnight with the recovery setting and will let you know what the result is. Until then, please help. Thank you, your time and effort is greatly appreciated!

• Copssh, how to add users?

  I installed copssh on Windows Vista (64-bit) here, and the installation seemed to go fine. It requires you to explicitly add users to log in, which is fine, so I opened the COPSSH Control Panel (really just an app), went to the Users tab, clicked Add, Forward, and the "User:" popup is empty. The "Domain:" popup has exactly one entry: my computer name. The "Documentation" shortcut in the start menu group is broken, but I found the folder it's supposed to point to, and I only see docs for command-line tools (which I'll investigate next). Is there something I'm missing? Is the COPSSH Control Panel just plain broken?

  I'm Marco from Italy and I'd like to ask you a piece of advice about my career. I hold a Ms degree in Biology, I enjoyed a lot studying it and I got very good grades but I didn't know what to do with my degree in the real life. Few months ago, I began to read a book about Python programming (Introduction to Computer Science, Zelle J.) and I've great fun learning Python as a beginner, I wake up in the morning thinking about doing excersies and writing simple programs with python :) I'm also watching free lectures from MIT open courseware, and I'm feeling a certain degree of regrets for never asking myself what was computer science, since it seems to me it's a magic world. After weeks of doubts, I made a move :) I applied for a CS bachelor degree abroad, I got an interview and I'm going to start this great adventure next September. I feel incredibly excited at it, but a little bit scared too. Scared because sometimes I think I'm making a great mistake for my life restarting from a bachelor in a completely different area of study. Sometimes I hear people saying the IT market is bad, sometimes I hear other ones saying quite the opposite instead. Moreover, some colleagues of mine suggested me to try to get into Bioinformatics, instead of CS. My question is: I want to really discover if CS is for me, I mean the passion of my life. I know I'm just a beginner and I can't say nothing about it yet. What do you suggest me: CS or Bioinformatics? If I get a Bs in CS, could I get into bioinformatics without relevant experience, taking into account I have a Ms Biology degree? Any comment is appreciated, thanks in advance.

• Keyboard-shortcut key-press-detection sensitivity settings

  last week I switched from Ubuntu 10.10 to 12.04 and after setting up my keyboard shortcuts, e.g., CTRL+ALT+E for my favorite editor and CTRL+ALT+X for the terminal, I noticed that the behavior when pressing the appropriate keys changed somehow. I know this is very subjective and I am not 100% percent sure if I am suddenly just too lazy when using my keyboard, but here is what I noticed: To run your shortcuts, you usually press the modifiers first and in addition press the alphanum key. Now, if I hold the modifiers down very consciously and press the alphanum key afterwards everything works fine. However, I noticed that I may often release the modifiers a bit too early. In Ubuntu 10.10 (metacity/compiz) my keyboard shortcuts would still execute and my tools would pop up. This does not work anymore in 12.04. Nevertheless, I still believe the old behavior to be more intuitive and would like to have it back. I a nutshell: Is there a parameter to control the shortcut-key-press detection behavior? I already searched the ubuntu keyboard options and searched for "keyboard" in gconf-editor but could not find any hints so far.

  Tengo un servidor con 8GB de RAM de 32 bits, instale windows server 2003 enterprise y sql server 2005 enterprise, el Sistema Operativo reconoce los 8GB, pero el Sql Server solo usaba 1.6 GB de memoria, entonces agregue al boot.ini el parametro /PAE y en Sql Server le habilite AWE de 1GB a 5GB, despues de reiniciar el servidor el Sistema que usa la BD estaba mas rapido mejoro bastante, pero en memoria el Sql Server solo usa 100 MB, veo la cantidad de memoria usada en el Administrador de Tareas de Windows, y no se si esta funcionando AWE o que sucedio? Rough translation: I have a server with 8GB of RAM 32-bit, install windows server 2003 enterprise and sql server 2005 enterprise, the operating system recognizes the 8GB, but the SQL Server only using 1.6 GB of memory, then add to boot.ini the parameter / PAE and will enable AWE Sql Server 1GB to 5GB, after rebooting the server using the database system was faster, the better lot, but in memory the SQL Server only uses 100 MB, I see the amount of memory used in Manager Windows Tasks, and not if AWE is running or what happened?

• ZFS: RAIDZ versus stripe with ditto blocks

  I'm going to build a ZFS file server from FreeBSD. I learned recently that I can't expand a RAIDZ udev once it's part of the pool. That's a problem since I'm a home user and will probably add one disk a year tops. But what if I set copies=3 against my entire pool and just throw individual drives into the pool separated? I've read somewheres that the copies will try and distribute across drives if possible. Is there a guarantee there? I really just want protection from bit rot and drive failure on the cheap. Speed's not an issue since it'll go over a 1Gb network and at MOST stream 720p podcasts. Would my data be guaranteed safe from a single drive failure? Are there things I'm not considering? Any and all input is appreciated.

• Battery is drained too quickly

  I'm getting really low battery life under ubuntu, not even close to windows. I tried powertop, and I saw that my laptop is consuming in idle nearly 20 watts (a bit more). I tried to install laptop-mode-tools, change "good" into "bad" in powertop, but nothing changes. I see that I have the the HD audio output device which is running at 100% every time. Could this be the problem? This is a report from powertop. • How to highlight non-rectangular hotspots?

  So my question is highly related to Creating non-rectangular hotspots and detecting clicks. Yet again, I've irregular hot-spots (think the game Risk). So basically, we can detect clicks on these hot-spots easily using color key mapping as discussed in above question which I don't have any problems implementing (which is also covered here in details). The problem is about highlighting these irreguar hotspots. So let me explain the question a bit more - the above color key mapping guide uses this as a world map: Then the author color-maps the imaginary countries: Now we can now detect the country the pointer is over. In the same article author mentions outlining countries on mouse-over. Though to get the effect, he creates unique border assets for each country - like: For the game I'm working on I'm using the same color-key mapping idea to detect hot-spots, but I didn't like the way of highlighting hot-spots. Coloring all the hot-spots is already a time-consuming job for me - as I have 25+ hot-spots for each map. Further, the need to have 25 unique border/highlight asset per hot-spot doesn't sound right. Anyone have a better idea/suggestion on highlighting these hot-spots?

• XNA Windows Resolution / Mouse Position Bug

  In XNA, when in windowed mode and resolution (set via PreferredBackBufferWidth/Height) is close to the resolution of the display, the view is distorted (zoomed in a bit)and the mouse coordinates are wrong. Here is what it looks like when I draw a bunch of lines to the screen. (Normal, Error on my ASUS Notebook G73Jh, Error on my EEE PC 1001P) In the top left of the screen the mouse position is correct, but the further you get away the more out of sync it becomes. Here are some images of the mouse in different positions and the game drawing a circle underneath where it thinks the mouse is. (Top Left, Bottom Right) If you shrink the resolution by a couple pixels then it goes back to working like normal, my first though at a fix was to limit the max resolution to a little smaller than the display resolution. I figured out the maximum resolution that works in a couple different modes, but there doesn't seem to be a pattern that would allow me to determine it based off the display resolution. Here is a project that demonstrates the problem, just set the resolution to the resolution of your display. Any ideas on how I might fix this issue? As an insteresting aside, I tried to use FRAPS to capture a video of the issue but fraps actually records without distortion or mouse offset.
