• 'Could not find RubyGem bundler', even though it is…

  I'm running Ruby 1.9.2preview1 (via RVM), and Bundler 0.9.18. If I execute bundle install, it works fine until the point where I don't have the correct permissions to install a gem. However if I execute sudo bundle install, it spits out that it 'Could not find RubyGem bundler'. How can this be, why is the behaviour changing when using sudo? Thanks

• Select videos using UIImagePickerController in 2G/3G

  Hi, I am facing a problem where-in I cannot select videos from the photo album in iPhone 2G/3G device. The default photos application does show videos and is capable of playing them, which in turn means that UIImagePickerController should clearly be capable of showing videos in photo album and selecting them. I havent tested for 3GS, but I am sure that this problem does not exist in it with reference to other threads. I have built the app for both 3.0 (base SDK) and 3.1 but with the same results. This issue is already discussed in the thread: http://www.iphonedevsdk.com/forum/iphone-sdk-development/36197-uiimagepickercontroller-does-not-show-movies-albums.html But it does not seem to host a solution. • Ten - oh, wait, eleven - Eleven things you should know about the ASP.NET Fall 2012 Update

  Today, just a little over two months after the big ASP.NET 4.5 / ASP.NET MVC 4 / ASP.NET Web API / Visual Studio 2012 / Web Matrix 2 release, the first preview of the ASP.NET Fall 2012 Update is out. Here's what you need to know: There are no new framework bits in this release - there's no change or update to ASP.NET Core, ASP.NET MVC or Web Forms features. This means that you can start using it without any updates to your server, upgrade concerns, etc. This update is really an update to the project templates and Visual Studio tooling, conceptually similar to the ASP.NET MVC 3 Tools Update. It's a relatively lightweight install. It's a 41MB download. I've installed it many times and usually takes 5-7 minutes; it's never required a reboot. It adds some new project templates to ASP.NET MVC: Facebook Application and Single Page Application templates. It adds a lot of cool enhancements to ASP.NET Web API. It adds some tooling that makes it easy to take advantage of features like SignalR, Friendly URLs, and Windows Azure Authentication. Most of the new features are installed via NuGet packages. Since ASP.NET is open source, nightly NuGet packages are available, and the roadmap is published, most of this has really been publicly available for a while. The official name of this drop is the ASP.NET Fall 2012 Update BUILD Prerelease. Please do not attempt to say that ten times fast. While the EULA doesn't prohibit it, it WILL legally change your first name to Scott. As with all new releases, you can find out everything you need to know about the Fall Update at http://asp.net/vnext (especially the release notes!) I'm going to be showing all of this off, assisted by special guest code monkey Scott Hanselman, this Friday at BUILD: Bleeding edge ASP.NET: See what is next for MVC, Web API, SignalR and more… (and I've heard it will be livestreamed). Let's look at some of those things in more detail. No new bits ASP.NET 4.5, MVC 4 and Web API have a lot of great core features. I see the goal of this update release as making it easier to put those features to use to solve some useful scenarios by taking advantage of NuGet packages and template code. If you create a new ASP.NET MVC application using one of the new templates, you'll see that it's using the ASP.NET MVC 4 RTM NuGet package (4.0.20710.0): This means you can install and use the Fall Update without any impact on your existing projects and no worries about upgrading or compatibility. New Facebook Application Template ASP.NET MVC 4 (and ASP.NET 4.5 Web Forms) included the ability to authenticate your users via OAuth and OpenID, so you could let users log in to your site using a Facebook account. One of the new changes in the Fall Update is a new template that makes it really easy to create full Facebook applications. You could create Facebook application in ASP.NET already, you'd just need to go through a few steps: Search around to find a good Facebook NuGet package, like the Facebook C# SDK (written by my friend Nathan Totten and some other Facebook SDK brainiacs). Read the Facebook developer documentation to figure out how to authenticate and integrate with them. Write some code, debug it and repeat until you got something working. Get started with the application you'd originally wanted to write. What this template does for you: eliminate steps 1-3. Erik Porter, Nathan and some other experts built out the Facebook Application template so it automatically pulls in and configures the Facebook NuGet package and makes it really easy to take advantage of it in an ASP.NET MVC application. One great example is the the way you access a Facebook user's information. Take a look at the following code in a File / New / MVC / Facebook Application site. First, the Home Controller Index action: [FacebookAuthorize(Permissions = "email")] public ActionResult Index(MyAppUser user, FacebookObjectList<MyAppUserFriend> userFriends) { ViewBag.Message = "Modify this template to jump-start your Facebook application using ASP.NET MVC."; ViewBag.User = user; ViewBag.Friends = userFriends.Take(5); return View(); } First, notice that there's a FacebookAuthorize attribute which requires the user is authenticated via Facebook and requires permissions to access their e-mail address. It binds to two things: a custom MyAppUser object and a list of friends. Let's look at the MyAppUser code: using Microsoft.AspNet.Mvc.Facebook.Attributes; using Microsoft.AspNet.Mvc.Facebook.Models; // Add any fields you want to be saved for each user and specify the field name in the JSON coming back from Facebook // https://developers.facebook.com/docs/reference/api/user/ namespace MvcApplication3.Models { public class MyAppUser : FacebookUser { public string Name { get; set; } [FacebookField(FieldName = "picture", JsonField = "picture.data.url")] public string PictureUrl { get; set; } public string Email { get; set; } } } You can add in other custom fields if you want, but you can also just bind to a FacebookUser and it will automatically pull in the available fields. You can even just bind directly to a FacebookUser and check for what's available in debug mode, which makes it really easy to explore. For more information and some walkthroughs on creating Facebook applications, see: Deploying your first Facebook App on Azure using ASP.NET MVC Facebook Template (Yao Huang Lin) Facebook Application Template Tutorial (Erik Porter) Single Page Application template Early releases of ASP.NET MVC 4 included a Single Page Application template, but it was removed for the official release. There was a lot of interest in it, but it was kind of complex, as it handled features for things like data management. The new Single Page Application template that ships with the Fall Update is more lightweight. It uses Knockout.js on the client and ASP.NET Web API on the server, and it includes a sample application that shows how they all work together. I think the real benefit of this application is that it shows a good pattern for using ASP.NET Web API and Knockout.js. For instance, it's easy to end up with a mess of JavaScript when you're building out a client-side application. This template uses three separate JavaScript files (delivered via a Bundle, of course): todoList.js - this is where the main client-side logic lives todoList.dataAccess.js - this defines how the client-side application interacts with the back-end services todoList.bindings.js - this is where you set up events and overrides for the Knockout bindings - for instance, hooking up jQuery validation and defining some client-side events This is a fun one to play with, because you can just create a new Single Page Application and hit F5. Quick, easy install (with one gotcha) One of the cool engineering changes for this release is a big update to the installer to make it more lightweight and efficient. I've been running nightly builds of this for a few weeks to prep for my BUILD demos, and the install has been really quick and easy to use. The install takes about 5 minutes, has never required a reboot for me, and the uninstall is just as simple. There's one gotcha, though. In this preview release, you may hit an issue that will require you to uninstall and re-install the NuGet VSIX package. The problem comes up when you create a new MVC application and see this dialog: The solution, as explained in the release notes, is to uninstall and re-install the NuGet VSIX package: Start Visual Studio 2012 as an Administrator Go to Tools->Extensions and Updates and uninstall NuGet. Close Visual Studio Navigate to the ASP.NET Fall 2012 Update installation folder: For Visual Studio 2012: Program Files\Microsoft ASP.NET\ASP.NET Web Stack\Visual Studio 2012 For Visual Studio 2012 Express for Web: Program Files\Microsoft ASP.NET\ASP.NET Web Stack\Visual Studio Express 2012 for Web Double click on the NuGet.Tools.vsix to reinstall NuGet This took me under a minute to do, and I was up and running. ASP.NET Web API Update Extravaganza! Uh, the Web API team is out of hand. They added a ton of new stuff: OData support, Tracing, and API Help Page generation. OData support Some people like OData. Some people start twitching when you mention it. If you're in the first group, this is for you. You can add a [Queryable] attribute to an API that returns an IQueryable<Whatever> and you get OData query support from your clients. Then, without any extra changes to your client or server code, your clients can send filters like this: /Suppliers?$filter=Name eq ‘Microsoft’ For more information about OData support in ASP.NET Web API, see Alex James' mega-post about it: OData support in ASP.NET Web API ASP.NET Web API Tracing Tracing makes it really easy to leverage the .NET Tracing system from within your ASP.NET Web API's. If you look at the \App_Start\WebApiConfig.cs file in new ASP.NET Web API project, you'll see a call to TraceConfig.Register(config). That calls into some code in the new \App_Start\TraceConfig.cs file: public static void Register(HttpConfiguration configuration) { if (configuration == null) { throw new ArgumentNullException("configuration"); } SystemDiagnosticsTraceWriter traceWriter = new SystemDiagnosticsTraceWriter() { MinimumLevel = TraceLevel.Info, IsVerbose = false }; configuration.Services.Replace(typeof(ITraceWriter), traceWriter); } As you can see, this is using the standard trace system, so you can extend it to any other trace listeners you'd like. • Does Subversion have an analogue to VSS's links?

  I am migrating a Visual SourceSafe code repository to Subversion and I am running into a problem. Here is a simplified layout of our current source code tree (in VSS): project_root\ |-libs\ |-tools\ |-arch_1\ | |-include | |-source |-arch_2\ |-include |-source My problem is in our two arch_ folders. Each arch_ folder will be built for a different hardware architecture, but the contents of the two folders are practically identical. The files in arch_2 are merely VSS links to the files in arch_1, with only a small handful of exceptions. Work is generally checked into and out of the arch_1 folder, and the VSS links make sure that any code checked in here is updated in the arch_2 folder as well. Moving to Subversion, is there anything that will behave like VSS's links? That is, is there a way to have two files in separate folders magically associated with one another such that they will always be in sync with each other (changes to one will affect the other as well)? Note: I know the correct answer here is to fix the build system. The build system on this project was pieced together roughly a decade ago, back when our compiler/build system wasn't intelligent enough to compile the same folder full of source code for two different architectures. Thanks to make and updated compilers, we can re-write the build system to eliminate this dependency on two parallel source folders. However, this will take time that we don't have at the moment (we are losing our license to our VSS server and are being forced to migrate on rather short notice). I am hoping to find a Subversion solution to this problem because at the moment, our time would be much better spent making the migration run smoothly than re-writing the build system (which is next on my to-do list!). • Mercurial extensions not working in Windows 7 x64?

  We are test driving Mercurial at work. We don't want to have to enter our user/pass each time we interact with a repository, so we set up the mercurial_keyring extension. We: Installed Python 2.6.5 (32 or 64 bit, depending on the system) Installed setuptools (for easy_install.exe) easy_install keyring easy_install mercurial_keyring And then made the appropriate changes to %userprofile%/mercurial.ini in the [auth] section. It works fine on my colleague's computer (32bit xp sp3), but it does not work on my machine (Windows 7 Ultimate x64). Also noteworthy, the setuptools had to be built from source on Win 7 x64 (python setup.py bdist_wininst, then run the resulting setuptools-0.6c11.win-amd64.exe). Using just hg.exe from the Mercurial 1.5 binary installation (the .msi), I get this error when I run hg.exe: * failed to import extension mercurial_keyring: No module named mercurial_keyring I tried to change my mercurial.ini, to specify the path to the mercurial_keyring.py file, instead of having mercurial find it (since it's in the PYTHONPATH). Old: [extensions] mercurial_keyring = New: [extensions] mercurial_keyring = c:/mercurial/extensions/mercurial_keyring.py The error changes to: abort: could not import module keyring! So while providing the path to the mercurial_keyring extension works, the dependent keyring module still cannot be found. After further investigation, it appears that NO extensions work. They all produce the error: * failed to import extension [extension name]: No module named [module name] It appears that when running hg.exe, it is not aware of PYTHONPATH. I have tried: Python 2.6.5 32 bit Python 2.6.5 64 bit Building Mercurial 1.5 from source with MinGW Building Mercurial 1.5 from source with MSVC9 Using hg.exe from the 1.5 binary dist (.msi) Using the hg.py in c:\python26\scripts when building from source Various configurations in %userprofile%/mercurial.ini Using setuptools (easy_install.exe) to install keyring and mercurial_keyring Building keyring and mercurial_keyring from source (python setup.py bdist_wininst) Nothing works. The closest I've got is using hg.py when building from source. It at least doesn't give me errors, and actually creates %userprofile%/wincrypto_pass.cfg when I enter my credentials. But on subsequent requests, it doesn't enter the credentials automatically. It prompts me for them again. Interestingly, TortoiseHG is using the keyring. I just can't get it to work on the command line. I think something is going on with Win 7 x64 that is preventing mercurial (hg.exe) from seeing the PYTHONPATH, so it can't find any of the installed modules. Does anyone have extensions working in Win 7 x64? Specifically with the binary installation of mercurial (not hg.py)?

  For those that follow me I’ve been away from blogging and twittering for a couple of months. This is the reason. For the last few months I’ve been working with a cross-functional team putting together a new product from the people that run WordPress, the free premiere blogging platform. The result is a new product we call SharePress, a highly extensible blogging and content management platform with the usability of WordPress and the power of SharePoint combined into a single product. SharePress gives you SharePoint sites that are SEO-friendly delivered with a Web 2.0 ease of use, leveraging all of the existing abilities of SharePoint and WordPress that we know today. The Reason Back in December I was approached by the WordPress team about building a new platform that took advantage of the power of SharePoint but the ease of WordPress. I’m no stranger to WordPress and it’s 5 minute no-holds-barred install (I’ve always wanted SharePoint to do this!) and I run my personal blog on WordPress as does my better half, Princess Jenn. There’s always been a pitch by so-called Web 2.0 applications to deliver the power of SharePoint but the ease of [insert product here] over the past year or so. I checked each and every one of them out, but they fell woefully short when it came to SharePoint’s document management, versioning, and customization. They try, but it’s never been up to par in my books. On the flipside, SharePoint has always been tops in collaboration in the Enterprise but it’s painful to develop web parts, UI customization can be tricky, and there’s just no user community for something as simple as themes and designs. The Product Enter SharePress. Is it SharePoint? Is it WordPress? It’s both, and neither. Everything you like about both products are there but this is a bold new product that is positioned to bring SharePoint to the masses while maintaining the fidelity of an Enterprise 2.0 collaboration platform. SharePress delivers on all fronts including: The ability to leverage any WordPress/Joomla/Drupal/DotNetNuke themes and skins inside of SharePoint Run any WordPress/Drupal/Joomla/DotNetNuke/SharePoint plug-in/module/web part/feature works out of the box with SharePress SEO-friendly URLs and pages Permalinks for all content All the features of SharePoint Server 2010 (including InfoPath, Excel, and Access services) included in the price Small deployment footprint. You decide how much to deploy and where. Independent Database Abstraction Layer (iDal) that allows you to deploy to SQL Server 2005/2008, MySQL, and PostgreSQL Portable Rendering Engine Layer (PREL) so you host .NET or PHP on Apache or IIS (version 7 or higher). The install feature is built around WordPress and it’s famous 5-minute install (actually, it’s never taken me more than 1 minute). The answer is IronPython which has now reached a maturity level capable of doing on the fly code language conversions. SharePress is a brand new product not built on top of any previous platform but leverages all the power of each of those applications through a patent pending technique called SharePress Multi-plAtfoRm Technology (SMART). SMART will convert PHP code on the fly into Python (using SWIG as an intermediate processor) which is then compiled to MSIL and then delivered back as an ASP.NET MVC application (output is C# or VB.NET, but you can build your own SMART converter to output a different language). Sound complicated? It is, but it’s all behind the scenes and you don’t have to worry about a thing. This image illustrates the technology stack and process: So users can load up out of the box PHP themes and plug-ins from the WordPress/Joomla/Drupal community into the SMART converter and output MSIL that is used by the SharePress engine and rendered on the fly to the end user. Supported PHP versions are 4.xx and 5.xx with version 6 support to come when it’s released. Similarly you can take any .NET application, DotNetNuke Module, SharePoint Web Part or event handler and feed it into the converter to output the same. Everything is reverse compiled into MSIL so it becomes technology agnostic. No source code access is needed and the SMART converter can handle obfuscated .NET assemblies that were built with .NET 1.0, 1.1, 2.0, 3.5, and 4.0. With this technology you can also with the flip of a switch have the output create PHP pages for you. This allows you to run SharePress on Unix based systems running PHP and MySQL, allowing you to deliver your SharePoint like experience to your users with a $0 infrastructure footprint. Here’s SharePress with the default WordPress post imported then a stock SharePoint collaboration site was imported. The site was then applied with the default Kubrick theme from WordPress. The Features Deploy any of the freely available 100,000 WordPress/Joomla/Drupal themes instantly to your runtime SharePress environment and preview or activate them right from your browser. Built-in Web 2.0 jQuery Enabled End User and Administrator Web Interface. Never have to remote into a server again! Run any SharePoint Web Part or Event Handler directly without modification or access to source code in SharePress. Use any WordPress/Joomla/Drupal plug-in directly in SharePress, no local admin or access to server. Just upload and activate. Upload and Activate any SharePoint Solution Package to any site remotely. No rebuilding. Changes made to sites require no compiling or rebuilding and are published immediately. Password Protected Content. You can give passwords to individual posts, articles, pages, documents, forms, and list items. A powerful polymorphic Captcha system backs the security interface and vendors can easily tie into smart card readers, fingerprint readers, and retina scanners for authorization and identification. OpenID, Windows Live, and Windows Authentication are supported out of the box. Infinitely customizable and extensible. You can leverage plug-ins from the open source community to do practically anything, all configured and uploaded via the browser. Additionally the developer API (available soon) allows you to build extensions in .NET, PHP, and Python with little effort. Easy Importing. We have importers for Blogger, WordPress, Drupal, Joomla, DotNetNuke, and SharePoint so you can populate your site quickly and easily with full metadata modeling and creation. Banner Management. The product will not be open source but source code licenses will be available to ISVs who are interested in interfacing with the API at a low level. Cost will be $25,000 USD per developer and gives you complete access to the source code to the SharePress Foundation System and the .NET 4.0 Framework source code.   I have problems installing PHPUnit 3.4.6 via PEAR 1.9.0. After I discover channel pear.phpunit.de and try to use one of following commands: pear install phpunit/PHPUnit pear install --alldeps phpunit/PHPUnit pear install --onlyreqdeps phpunit/PHPUnit it fails, giving me following error: No releases available for package "pear.phpunit.de/PHPUnit" install failed I found several threads from people with the same problem, but upgrading PEAR to the newest version usually worked for them. Also there seems to be close to no tutorials for installing PHPUnit for Windows. EDIT: I've also tried to change prefered_state to beta; didn't help. I've also tried to get list of all available packages: pear remote-list -c phpunit It gives me another error: Cannot download non-http URL "/c/categories.xml"

• Installing python-mysql with wamp's mysql

  Hello, (I'm not sure if this should be asked here or SU.. but seeing this question on SO, I am asking it here...) I have wamp (mysql-5.1.33) server setup on my vista machine, and I am trying to install python-mysql 1.2.3c1 to use the mysql version provided by wamp. At first, when I ran python setup.py install, I got an error saying it couldn't find the location of the mysql's bin folder. Looking into setup_windows.py, I noticed it was looking for a registry key and so I added that registry entry and I think it is able to find it now. But now, when I run python setup.py install, I get a different error saying Unable to find vcvarsall.bat. Any help on installing this appreciated. • installing visual studio 2005 after 2008 already installed

  I have a machine with VS 2008/Sql 2008 already installed. I now need to install an instance of vs 2005/Sql 2005 for two reasons. The main reason is for reporting Services 2005. All of the report servers are sql 2005. Now to create a SSRS compatible with 2005 do I just need to install Sql Server 2005 and work with it in VS 2008 or do I also need to install VS 2005. The second reason is the off-site team that I am consulting with do not want the project upgraded yet. So without rebuilding the whole box is there a safe way to install VS 2005 on a box that already contains 2008? Same question for Sql Server 2005? Thanks

  Has anyone found that the userbase is more reluctant to install Silverlight 3 Apps in offline mode because they have no control over "where" the app is installed to? I've had a few issues of a similar nature in the past, with 'power users' getting upset that they can't specify install directories. Are there any workarounds? Any way to get the Silverlight offline installs to prompt for specific install locations and the like? The specific reason given is that users want to install apps to remote storage, like a USB stick or something.

• How do I connect to SDF on a Mobile device from desktop application?

  C# WinForms .Net 3.5 to SQL CE 3.5 on Mobile 6.1 Device I'd like to make a connection from a desktop application to a SDF database on my Windows Mobile device while it's connected via ActiveSync. Visual Studio lets me create a Data Connection to my device. The connections tests OK and I can view the data in the database using Visual Studio. I then create a form and try to fill a DataGridView. When I run the program I get an error that the path to the data base is not valid. How am I supposed to specify the Mobile device path in the connection string? • Guidelines for using Merge task in SSIS

  I have a table with three fields, one an identity field, and I need to add some new records from a source that has the other two fields. I'm using SSIS, and I think I should use the merge tool, because one of the sources is not in the local database. But, I'm confused by the merge tool and the proper process. I have my one source (an Oracle table), and I get two fields, well_id and well_name, with a sort after, sorting by well_id. I have the destination table (sql server), and I'm also using that as a source. It has three fields: well_key (identity field), well_id, and well_name, and I then have a sort task, sorting on well_id. Both of those are input to my merge task. I was going to output to a temporary table, and then somehow get the new records back into the sql server table. Oracle Well SQL Well | | V V Sort Source Sort Well | | -------> Merge* <----------- | V Temp well table I suspect this isn't the best way to use this tool, however. What are the proper steps for a merge like this? One of my reasons for questioning this method is that my merge has an error, telling me that the "Merge Input 2" must be sorted, but its source is a sort task, so it IS sorted.
