  Hi, I would like to display the users profile picture inside of my applications canvas page, is there a way to do that using the graph api? • Java Playing Cards Game Framework

  My friends and I at uni love playing Shithead into the wee hours. But soon we graduate and will leave town, so probably won't get together for a game for a while. I want to develop a Java app we can use to play Shithead and our other favorites over a network. An app like this already exists, but is ugly, buggy and does not support our house rules. The source is available, but is such a mess that I would really rather start from scratch than try to refactor it! Building my game using some standard playing card api or framework, if such a thing exists, would be better than starting from scratch. The answer to a similar SO question was to use the JPC-API, which allegedly provides basic playing card services and rendering. But this Sourceforge project currently makes available no files or source code! Is there an alternative, or somewhere else to find this framework? Soon I will need help with the following as well: Lobby services (finding other players) Gaming network protocol (to communicate moves between players) Gaming theory (to write the computer opponent) Winning condition detection Game UI development

• Why Java language does not offer a way to declare getters and setters of a given "field" through ann

  I actually happily design and develop JEE Applications for quite 9 years, but I realized recently that as time goes by, I feel more and more fed up of dragging all these ugly bean classes with their bunch of getters and setters. Considering a basic bean like this : public class MyBean { // needs getter AND setter private int myField1; // needs only a getter, no setter private int myField2; // needs only a setter, no getter private int myField3; /** * Get the field1 * @return the field1 */ public int getField1() { return myField1; } /** * Set the field1 * @param value the value */ public void setField1(int value) { myField1 = value; } /** * Get the field2 * @return the field2 */ public int getField2() { return myField2; } /** * Set the field3 * @param value the value */ public void setField3(int value) { myField3 = value; } } I'm dreaming of something like this : public class MyBean { @inout(public,public) private int myField1; @out(public) private int myField2; @in(public) private int myField3; } No more stupid javadoc, just tell the important thing... It would still be possible to mix annotation and written down getters or setters, to cover cases when it should do non-trivial sets and gets. In other words, annotation would auto-generate the getter / setter code piece except when a literate one is provided. Moreover, I'm also dreaming of replacing things like that : MyBean b = new MyBean(); int v = b.getField1(); b.setField3(v+1); by such : MyBean b = new MyBean(); int v = b.field1; b.field3 = v+1; In fact, writing "b.field1" on the right side of an expression would be semantically identical to write "b.getField1()", I mean as if it has been replaced by some kind of a preprocessor. It's just an idea but I'm wondering if I'm alone on that topic, and also if it has major flaws. • Publishing to live website

  Hey there, My friend and I are collaborating on a ASP.NET powered website. To develop it locally, we use Visual Web Developer Express (good enough for our needs). Subversion (using Tortoise SVN) is our source control of choice with the repository residing on Unfuddle.com. We run into problems when we need to update the live site - since there's no version control on it. Currently we use the "Copy to Website" feature in VWD which copies the files using FTP. Here are some problems: VWD only keeps track of files uploaded by one user, so if the other user uploads a newer version of a file to the live site, VWD on my side cannot tell whether the live version of the file is newer or mine is. There's no way to tell whether all the latest changes are available on the live site. We have to be careful not to party all over the shared web.config file since the other user's local DB settings are different from mine, and of course, the live DB settings are a whole other story! What do you guys use to publish to a live site? Does anything out there tie into Subversion so that we can automate the process and always guarantee that the live site is synced to a change list number? Also, how do you manage the different web.config file settings? Thanks!

• Flex: How to resize DisplayObject to fit panel in Flex application

  I am trying to attach some of my actionscript class, inherited from Sprite, to my Flex application by attaching it to a UIComponent, then add UIComponent to a panel. However, the size of my Sprite class appears to be larger than the panel. So, I try to resize it using DisplayObject.scale property, but I need to know the size of my container. Since I try to make my code reusable, I figure that I should let my Sprite class handle the resize by getting it via its parent property (let's say, I can resize it by set this.scaleX = this.parent.Width/this.width or something like this) However, my Sprite class's parent, which is the UIComponent, has width/height of 0. So, my question is: 1) Is there any better way to resize DisplayObject class to fit its container when attached to Flex object? 2) If you know, why my UIComponent's size remain 0 and my DisplayObject still appears at its full size? • Monotouch or Titanium for rapid application development on IPhone?

  As a .Net developer I always dreamed for the possibility to develop with my existing skills (c#) applications for the Iphone. Both programs require a Mac and the Iphone Sdk installed. Appcelerator Titanium was the first app I tried and it is based on exposing some Iphone native api to javascript so that they can be called using that language. Monotouch starts at $399 for beeing able to deploy on the Iphone and not on the Iphone simulator while Titanium is free. Monotouch (Monodevelop) has an Ide that is currently missing in Titanium (but you can use any editor like Textmate, Aptana...) I think both program generate at the end a native precompiled app (also if I am not sure about the size of the final app on the Iphone as I think the .Net framework calls are prelilnked at compilation time in Monotouch). I am also not sure about the full coverage of all the Iphone api and features. Titanium has also the advantage to enable Android app development but as a c# developer I still find Monotouch experience more like the Visual Studio one. Witch one would you choose and what are your experiences on Monotouch and Titanium?

• Modularity in Flex

  I'm working on a pretty big application for Flex/Air. We are using GraniteDS and Tide to interact with the model from our Java EE server. I've been reading about modularization and Modules in Flex. The application has already been built, and I'm figuring a way out to re-design some classes and parts. From what I've read so far, I understand a Module is a different swf which can be dynamically load. Most of the tutorials/documentation are oriented to Flash "programmers" who are using Flex or Air instead of real developers, so that makes online resources harder to get. What I can't understand - yet - is how to encapsulate ActionScript classes or MXML views under this module. I've separated some of the code into libraries. For example, the generated code from Granite is in a "server" library. But I would like to separate parts of the logic with its Moderators, Controllers and Views. Are modules the way to go? Is there a "modules for dummies" or "head first Flex Modules for programmers" like tutorial in order to get a better perspective in order to build my architecture? When to choose libraries and when to choose modules? I'm using Flex 3.5, and a migration to Flex 4 is way far into the future, so no Flex 4 answers please, thanks!

• What is best strategy to handle exceptions & errors in Rails?

  Hello. I was wondering if people would share their best practices / strategies on handling exceptions & errors. Now I'm not asking when to throw an exception ( it has been throroughly answered here: SO: When to throw and Exception) . And I'm not using this for my application flow - but there are legitimate exceptions that happen all the time. For example the most popular one would be ActiveRecordNotFound. What would be the best way to handle it? The DRY way? Right now I'm doing a lot of checking within my controller so if Post.find(5) returns Nil - I check for that and throw a flash message. However while this is very granular - it's a bit cumbersome in a sense that I need to check for exceptions like that in every controller, while most of them are essentially the same and have to do with record not found or related records not found - such as either Post.find(5) not found or if you are trying to display comments related to post that doesn't exist, that would throw an exception (something like Post.find(5).comments[0].created_at) I know you can do something like this in ApplicationController and overwrite it later in a particular controller/method to get more granular support, however would that be a proper way to do it? class ApplicationController < ActionController::Base rescue_from ActiveRecord::RecordInvalid do |exception| render :action => (exception.record.new_record? ? :new : :edit) end end

  Hi, I'm trying to develop a simple "telnet/server" daemon which have to run a program on a new socket connection. This part working fine. But I have to associate my new process to a pty, because this process have some terminal capabilities (like a readline). A test with a connection via ssh/sshd on the remote device, and executing "localy" (under the ssh connection) prgName, show that the stdin/stdout/stderr fd of this process "prgName" are associated to a pty (and so the terminal capabilities of this process are working fine).   Hello! I am a newbie in Flex development and using Flash Builder 4 with SDK 4. Now I get the error that "the prefix "fx" for element "fx:Style" is not bound" in line number 4. I searched for it, and it has sth. to do with namespaces, but I can not solve it by myelf.   What is more viable to use:- Javascript Libraries: YUI, jQuery, ExtJs OR UI Programming tools: GWT, ExtGWT, SmartGWT It has become very difficult to choose between them as they are constantly increasing their capabilities to meet newer requirements. We all know the power of jQuery in UI manipulations. The latest news from Microsoft about jQuery being officially part of .Net developr’s toolkit will definitely make jQuery a preferred choice against other JavaScript libraries [See link: http://weblogs.asp.net/scottgu/archive/2008/09/28/jquery-and-microsoft.aspx]. But on the other hand, GWT is building a framework which could be used on client as well as on the sever side. This is definitely going to make developers’ life easy as it does not require developer to be an expert in browser quirks, XMLHttpRequest, and JavaScript in order to develop high-performance web applications. It includes SDK (Java API libraries, compiler, and development server which allows to write client-side applications in Java and deploy them as JavaScript), Speed Tracer and plug-in for Eclipse. GWT is used by many products like Google Wave and AdWords. So question is still un-answered, what is more viable to use? Any thoughts?

  Hello, I would like to intercept any request made to the server for XML files. I thought that it might be possible with an HttpHandler. It's coded and it works... on localhost only (?!?!). So, why is it working on localhost only? Here is my web.config <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?> <configuration> <system.web> <httpHandlers> <add verb="*" path="*.xml" type="FooBar.XmlHandler, FooBar" /> </httpHandlers> </system.web> </configuration> Here is my C# : namespace FooBar { public class XmlHandler : IHttpHandler { public bool IsReusable { get { return false; } } public void ProcessRequest(HttpContext context) { HttpResponse Response = context.Response; Response.Write(xmlString); } } } As you might have seen, I'm writing the xmlString directly in the response, it's only temporary because I'm still wondering how I could give the filename instead (that's the second question ;) ) What is supposed to be written in the response is only the xml filename that will be retrieved by a flash app. Thanks Edit : When calling the page from another computer it looks like it's not getting to the HttpHandler. However, the mapping for IIS have been done correctly.

• Manipulate score/rank on query results from NHibernate.Search

  I've been working with NHibernate, NHibernate.Search and Lucene.Net to improve the search engine used on the website I develop. Basically, I use it to search contents of corporations specification documents. This is not to be confused with Lucene's notion of documents: in my case, a specification document (which I'll hereafter call a "specdoc") can contain many pages, and the content of these pages are the ones that are actually indexed (thus, the pages themselves are the ones that fall into Lucene's concept of documents). So, the pages belong to a specdoc, that in turn belong to a corporation (so, a corporation can have many specdocs). I'm using NHibernate.Search "IndexEmbedded" and "ContainedIn" attributes to associate the pages with their specdoc and the specdocs to their corporations, so I can query for terms in specdoc pages and have Lucene/NH.Search return either the pages themselves, the specdocs, or the corporations that match the query on the pages. I can query this way and get ranked results, thus presenting results (that is, corporations, specdocs or pages) by relevance, which is great. But now I need something more. Specifically in the case where I query terms and have NH.Search return the corporations that match, I need to manually/artificially tune the score of some of the results, because there are corporations that I want to show up on the top of the result set - think of "sponsored results". I'm thinking of doing it on my application, maybe creating an entity/database table that contain an association to the corporation entity, and a score boost value. But I don't know how to feed this to Lucene and have it boost the results accordingly at search time. Initially I thought about deriving a Similarity class to do this, but it doesn't look like Similarity can be used to modify result sets at search time. As per this page, it looks like what I need is to mess around with weight or scoring. But the docs are a little superficial in that there are no examples on how to implement a custom scoring, let alone integrate it with NH.Search. So, does anyone know how to do this, or point me to some documentation or working example on how to do something similar? Thanks!

• SIMPLE PHP MVC Framework!

  I need a simple and basic MVC example to get me started. I dont want to use any of the available packaged frameworks. I am in need of a simple example of a simple PHP MVC framework that would allow, at most, the basic creation of a simple multi-page site. I am asking for a simple example because I learn best from simple real world examples. Big popular frameworks (such as code ignighter) are to much for me to even try to understand and any other "simple" example I have found are not well explained or seem a little sketchy in general. I should add that most examples of simple MVC frameworks I see use mod_rewrite (for URL routing) or some other Apache-only method. I run PHP on IIS. I need to be able to understand a basic MVC framework, so that I could develop my own that would allow me to easily extend functionality with classes. I am at the point where I understand basic design patterns and MVC pretty well. I understand them in theory, but when it comes down to actually building a real world, simple, well designed MVC framework in PHP, i'm stuck. I would really appreciate some help! Edit: I just want to note that I am looking for a simple example that an experienced programmer could whip up in under an hour. I mean simple as in bare bones simple. I dont want to use any huge frameworks, I am trying to roll my own. I need a decent SIMPLE example to get me going.

• Haskell Linear Algebra Matrix Library for Arbitrary Element Types

  I'm looking for a Haskell linear algebra library that has the following features: Matrix multiplication Matrix addition Matrix transposition Rank calculation Matrix inversion is a plus and has the following properties: arbitrary element (scalar) types (in particular element types that are not Storable instances). My elements are an instance of Num, additionally the multiplicative inverse can be calculated. The elements mathematically form a finite field (??2256). That should be enough to implement the features mentioned above. arbitrary matrix sizes (I'll probably need something like 100x100, but the matrix sizes will depend on the user's input so it should not be limited by anything else but the memory or the computational power available) as fast as possible, but I'm aware that a library for arbitrary elements will probably not perform like a C/Fortran library that does the work (interfaced via FFI) because of the indirection of arbitrary (non Int, Double or similar) types. At least one pointer gets dereferenced when an element is touched (written in Haskell, this is not a real requirement for me, but since my elements are no Storable instances the library has to be written in Haskell) I already tried very hard and evaluated everything that looked promising (most of the libraries on Hackage directly state that they wont work for me). In particular I wrote test code using: hmatrix, assumes Storable elements Vec, but the documentation states: Low Dimension : Although the dimensionality is limited only by what GHC will handle, the library is meant for 2,3 and 4 dimensions. For general linear algebra, check out the excellent hmatrix library and blas bindings I looked into the code and the documentation of many more libraries but nothing seems to suit my needs :-(. Update Since there seems to be nothing, I started a project on GitHub which aims to develop such a library. The current state is very minimalistic, not optimized for speed at all and only the most basic functions have tests and therefore should work.   I am writing a custom Control class in C# for my main project. There're 2 projects, one for my Control and one for my main project. These 2 projects are in the same solution. I add a reference from my main project to my Control project. I notice that the first time after I drag my Control from the Tool Panel onto my main winform, an assembly folder was generated at the C:\Users\XXX\AppData\Local\Microsoft\VisualStudio\9.0\ProjectAssemblies, and the folder name is something like "jlebh-py01". The first build is always OK, but after I rebuild my Control class or whole solution, a new assembly folder will be generated at C:\Users\XXX\AppData\Local\Microsoft\VisualStudio\9.0\ProjectAssemblies, and then problem arises, my Control fails to behave well because Visual Studio says that the two types "originates from different location". The error message is as below: [A]MyControl.TypeXXX cannot be cast to [B]MyControl.TypeXXX. Type A orginates from assemblyXXX at location 'C:\Users\XXX\AppData\Local\Microsoft\VisualStudio\9.0\ProjectAssemblies\jlebh-py01\MyControl.dll' Type B originats from assemblyXXX at location 'C:\Users\XXX\AppData\Local\Microsoft\VisualStudio\9.0\ProjectAssemblies\ue4i-z3j01\MyControl.dll' If I reference the Control DLL directly instead of through project reference, or never rebuild the Control project after use my Control in the main project, things seem to be OK.   Hi all, How we can define JS function on inside ? I tried to load file javascript on the end tag , but I still can't call the function from javascript file. • Google GWT cross-browser support: is it BS ?

  I developed a browser-deployed full-text search app in FlashBuilder which communicates RESTfully with a remote web-server. The software fits into a tiny niche--it is for use with ancient languages not modern ones, and there's no way I'm going to make any money on it but I did spend a lot of time on it. Now that Apple won't allow Flash on the iPad, I'm looking for a 100% javascript solution and was led to consider GWT. It looked promising, but one of the apps being "showcased" as a stellar example of what can be done with GWT has this disclaimer on their website (names {removed} to protect the potentially innocent) : Your current web browser (Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US) AppleWebKit/532.5 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/4.1.249.1045 Safari/532.5) is not officially supported by {company and product name were here}. If you experience any problems using this site please install either Microsoft Internet Explorer 6+ or Mozilla Firefox 3.5+ before contacting {product name was here} Support. What gives when GWT apps aren't "officially" supported on Chrome? What grade (A, B, C, D, F) would you give to GWT for cross-browser support? • Prevent illegal behavior to the registered user

  I am building a website in which this website will be focused on the publishing of novels. Every writers who publish their novels with us will get a royalty from us. And this royalty comes from the user or the reader who read the novel online in our website. When a user search for a novel and want to read that, they will click a link to the page which its content is that novel. The html page for each novels will have a session function that first will force them to login or register to make a payment such as with a credit-card or paypal before accessing that html page. My problem now is if the user has succesfully login and access the html page, I am afraid if the user will copy the content of the novel. Some disccussion out here How to Disable Copy Paste (Browser) have a solution to create it in Flash so that it can't be coppied-paste. But the I think, if the user who access it is a web developer like us they will try to find the path of the file from the link in the page source, and then they can steal it. For now I think it is enough I am explaining this. I hope anyone fully accept this problem (question) with a good idea to solve it.

  I've started using Joomla 1.5 recently and am using the TinyMCE online WYSIWYG editor that comes with the package to edit articles. I tend to write direct html and javascript rather than use the WYSIWYG functions, I find that after the first time the changes are applied(page updated) most of your html becomes 4-5 separate big paragraphs. • How you would you describe the Observer pattern in beginner language?

  Currently, my level of understanding is below all the coding examples on the web about the Observer Pattern. I understand it simply as being almost a subscription that updates all other events when a change is made that the delegate registers. However, I'm very unstable in my true comprehension of the benefits and uses. I've done some googling, but most are above my level of understanding. I'm trying to implement this pattern with my current homework assignment, and to truly make sense on my project need a better understanding of the pattern itself and perhaps an example to see what its use. I don't want to force this pattern into something just to submit, I need to understand the purpose and develop my methods accordingly so that it actually serves a good purpose. My text doesn't really go into it, just mentions it in one sentence. MSDN was hard for me to understand, as I'm a beginner on this, and it seems more of an advanced topic. How would you describe this Observer pattern and its uses in C# to a beginner? For an example, please keep code very simple so I can understand the purpose more than complex code snippets. I'm trying to use it effectively with some simple textbox string manipulations and using delegates for my assignment, so a pointer would help!
