  • Concepts: Channel vs. Stream

    - by hotzen
Hello, is there a conceptual difference between the terms "Channel" and "Stream"? Do the terms require/determine, for example, the allowed number of concurrent Consumers or Producers? I'm currently developing a Channel/Stream of DataFlowVariables, which may be written by one producer and read by one consumer as the implementation is destructive/mutable. Would this be a Channel or Stream, is there any difference at all? Thanks

  • What is the best service/tool to put short audio clips on a website so users can click and listen im

    - by Edward Tanguay
I'm making a foreign language flashcard website in which I want to have 100s of short 3-10 second audio files available for users to click and listen. So I am looking for a tool/service such as YouTube or Screenr.com but for audio which e.g.: allows me to easily upload multiple kinds of audio files: mp3, wav, etc. easy to manage them online (delete, replace) has a simple, small player (e.g. flash) that integrates nicely into any site

  • Colour instead of color?

    - by Jookia
I'm working on a game engine in C++ and I have methods like setColour and things that use british grammar. While I was thinking how C++ compilers mostly use the english language (correct me if I'm wrong) and how most APIs use american grammar, should I go with the flow and continue the unofficial standard in the grammar programmer high council or be a rebel? I'm not sure which.

Other browser can get xml and xsl files perfectly. What can be the problem? Thanks P.S: It runs well on my local server with all browser.

  • Nintendo DSi SDK : Getting Started

    - by Hugoware
Does anyone have a good starting point for learning about development for the new Nintendo DSi? What kind of hardware do you need to develop and test something like this? Can you develop for the DSi using the standard DS? What language do you need to use? [Bonus Question] : I also heard the new DSi is going to get an App Store similar to Apple - Are developers going to be able to sell games using this?

  • Is Programming Right for me?

    - by L1th1um
I'm interested in programming, but it seems to me that I can't get into it. Every time I've tried to learn a language and stuff by looking through tutorials or books I'd never get past the part where I use the syntax to make something. And by interest, I mean that I read stack overflow a lot, coding horror, and stuff but the actual coding part is hard for me to get into. Did anybody start this way? How did you get past this block?

  • Python or Ruby for webbased Artificial Intelligence?

    - by Pieter Kubben
A new web application may require adding Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the future, e.g. using ProLog. I know it can be done from a Java environment, but I am wondering about the opportunities with modern web languages like Ruby or Python. The latter is considered to be "more scientific" (at least used in that environment), but using Google there seems to be a preliminary ProLog implementation for both. Any suggestions on modern (open source) web languages (like Python or Ruby) in combination with AI?

  • Google App Engine Memcache - Sliding expiration

    - by Keyur
Is there support for sliding expiration in the GAE MemcacheService? I can do a crude implementation where following every get() I do a put(). This will effectively reset the expiration time but this obviously is not an efficient solution. Any pointers on how I can implement this more efficiently? Thanks, Keyur

  • How to generate Function caller graphs for JavaScript and ActionScript?

    - by Jeremy Rudd
I like the way Doxygen combines with Graphviz dot to generate function caller graphs. I'd like this functionality for other languages as well, apart from the basics that Doxygen supports (C++, C, Java, Objective-C, Python, VHDL, PHP, C#). I'm currently looking for tools that support JavaScript, ActionScript 2 and ActionScript 3/Flex. I'm also interested in tools that have a wider language support than Doxygen. Is there any way to get function caller graphs for any other languages?

  • Visual Studio support for coding in MSIL?

    - by jdk
For the longest time I've been curious to code in Microsoft Intermediate Language (MSIL) just as an academic endeavour and to gain a better understanding of what's "happening under the hood". Is there any sort of Visual Studio support for this in the form of: project templates, IntelliSense integration, and those kind of RAD features?

  • BOM in a PHP page auto generated by Wordpress

    - by Paolo63
I admin two different blogs. They are both wordpress 2.8.6 (so they have exactly the same source code, plugins apart) but they are located on two different hosting platform (hostmonster.com and aruba.it). To explain my problem I've dumped with SmartSniff a session with each one of the sites. Here is the dump from hostmonster: GET /blog/paolo/ HTTP/1.1 Host: www.e-venturi.com Accept-Encoding: identity Accept-Language: en-us Accept: text/html, text/plain, text/xml, image/gif, image/x-xbitmap, image/x-icon,image/jpeg, image/pjpeg, application/vnd.ms-powerpoint, application/vnd.ms-excel, application/msword, */* User-Agent: Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.0;) HTTP/1.1 200 OK Date: Sat, 28 Nov 2009 23:47:38 GMT Server: Apache/2.2.14 (Unix) mod_ssl/2.2.14 OpenSSL/0.9.8l DAV/2 mod_auth_passthrough/2.1 FrontPage/5.0.2.2635 X-Powered-By: PHP/5.2.11 X-Pingback: http://www.e-venturi.com/blog/paolo/xmlrpc.php Vary: Accept-Encoding Transfer-Encoding: chunked Content-Type: text/html; charset=UTF-8 a6 <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd"> and now from aruba: GET /blog/ HTTP/1.1 Host: www.cubanite.net Accept-Encoding: identity Accept-Language: en-us Accept: text/html, text/plain, text/xml, image/gif, image/x-xbitmap, image/x-icon,image/jpeg, image/pjpeg, application/vnd.ms-powerpoint, application/vnd.ms-excel, application/msword, */* User-Agent: Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.0;) HTTP/1.1 200 OK Date: Sat, 28 Nov 2009 23:49:19 GMT Server: Apache/2.2 X-Pingback: http://www.cubanite.net/blog/xmlrpc.php Vary: Accept-Encoding Transfer-Encoding: chunked Content-Type: text/html; charset=UTF-8 100b ...<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Strict//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-strict.dtd"> (note: a6 and 100b are the packet size reported by SmartSniff) Ok, the big difference are the three dots in front of the <!DOCTYPE in aruba. They are the UTF-8 BOM (0xef 0xbb 0xbf). Being the same PHP source on both the servers, why does it appears only on one server ? The content is generated so the post author can't deliberately insert a BOM and I've verified the template to be BOM free too. Naturally there are different PHP and Apache versions on the servers... what can I check or set to diagnose and resolve the problem ? By the way I don't want the BOM. Many thanks in advance.

  • Error with varchar(max) column when using net.sourceforge.jtds.jdbc.Driver

    - by Rihan Meij
Hi I have a MS SQL database running (MS SQL 2005) and am connecting to it via the net.sourceforge.jtds.jdbc.Driver. The query works fine for all the columns except one that is a varchar(max). Any ideas how to get around this issues? I am using the jdbc driver to run a data index into a SOLR implementation. (I do not control the database, so the first prize solution would be where I can tweak the SQL command to get the desired results) Thanks

  • Naming Suggestions For A Function Providing Chaining In A Different Way

    - by sid3k
I've coded an experimental function which makes passed objects chainable by using high order functions. It's name is "chain" for now, and here is a usage example; chain("Hello World") (print) // evaluates print function by passing "Hello World" object. (console.log,"Optional","Parameters") (returnfrom) // returns "Hello World" It looks lispy but behaves very different since it's coded in a C based language, I don't know if there is a name for this idiom and I couldn't any name more suitable than "chain". Any ideas, suggestions?

  • Can anyone explain me the source code of python "import this"?

    - by byterussian
If you open a Python interpreter, and type "import this", as you know, it prints: The Zen of Python, by Tim Peters Beautiful is better than ugly. Explicit is better than implicit. Simple is better than complex. Complex is better than complicated. Flat is better than nested. Sparse is better than dense. Readability counts. Special cases aren't special enough to break the rules. Although practicality beats purity. Errors should never pass silently. Unless explicitly silenced. In the face of ambiguity, refuse the temptation to guess. There should be one-- and preferably only one --obvious way to do it. Although that way may not be obvious at first unless you're Dutch. Now is better than never. Although never is often better than *right* now. If the implementation is hard to explain, it's a bad idea. If the implementation is easy to explain, it may be a good idea. Namespaces are one honking great idea -- let's do more of those! In the python source(Lib/this.py) this text is generated by a curios piece of code: s = """Gur Mra bs Clguba, ol Gvz Crgref Ornhgvshy vf orggre guna htyl. Rkcyvpvg vf orggre guna vzcyvpvg. • How to approach performance issues?

    - by jess
Hi, We are developing a client-server desktop application(winforms with sql server 2008, using LINQ-SQL).We are now finding many issues related to performance. These relate to querying too much data with LINQ , bad database design, not much caching etc. What do you suggest,we should do - how to go about solving these performance issues? One thing,I am doing is doing sql profiling, and trying to fix some queries. As far caching is concerned,we have static lists. But,how to keep them updated,we don't have any server side implementation. So,these lists can be stale,if someone changes data. regards
