  • Ladder-like word game in Java

    - by sasquatch90
    I've found this question http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2844190/choosing-design-method-for-ladder-like-word-game and I would also like to do this kind of program. I've written some code but already have two issues. Here's what I already have : GRID : public class Grid { public Grid(){} public Grid( Element e ){} } ELEMENT : public class Element { final int INVISIBLE = 0; final int EMPTY = 1; final int FIRST_LETTER = 2; final int OTHER_LETTER = 3; private int state; private String letter; public Element(){} //empty block public Element(int state){ this("", 0); } //filled block public Element(String s, int state){ this.state = state; this.letter = s; } public static void changeState(int s){ } public int getState(){ return state; } public boolean equalLength(){ return true; } public boolean equalValue(){ return true; } @Override public String toString(){ return "["+letter+"]"; } } MAIN: import java.util.Scanner; public class Main { public static void main(String[] args){ Scanner sc = new Scanner(System.in); System.out.println("Height: "); while (!sc.hasNextInt()) { System.out.println("int, please!"); sc.next(); } final int height = sc.nextInt(); Grid[] game = new Grid[height]; for(int i = 1; i <= height; i++) { String s; do { System.out.println("Length " + i + ", please!"); s = sc.next(); } while (s.length() != i); Element[] line = new Element[s.length()+1]; Element single = null; String[] temp = null; //issue here temp = s.split(""); System.out.println("s.length: "+s.length()); System.out.println("temp.length: "+temp.length); // for(String str : temp){ System.out.println("str:"+str); } for (int k = 0 ; k < temp.length ; k++) { if( k == 0 ){ single = new Element(temp[k], 2); System.out.println("single1: "+single); } else{ single = new Element(temp[k], 3); System.out.println("single2: "+single); } line[k] = single; } for (Element l : line) { System.out.println("line:"+l); } //issue here game[i] = line; } // for (Grid g : game) { System.out.println(g); } } } And sample output for debug : Height: 3 Length 1, please! A s.length: 1 temp.length: 2 str: str:A single1: [] single2: [A] line:[] line:[A] Here's what I think it should work like. I grab a word from user. Next create Grid element for whole game. Then for each line I create Element[] array called line. I split the given text and here's the first problem. Why string.split() adds a whitespace ? You can see clearly in output that it is added for no reason. How can I get rid of it (now I had to add +1 to the length of line just to run the code). Continuing I'm throwing the splitted text into temporary String array and next from each letter I create Element object and throw it to line array. Apart of this empty space output looks fine. But next problem is with Grid. I've created constructor taking Element as an argument, but still I can't throw line as Grid[] elements because of 'incompatible types'. How can I fix that ? Am I even doing it right ? Maybe I should get rid of line as Element[] and just create Grid[][] ?

  • Advanced Regex: Smart auto detect and replace URLs with anchor tags

    - by Robert Koritnik
    I've written a regular expression that automatically detects URLs in free text that users enter. This is not such a simple task as it may seem at first. Jeff Atwood writes about it in his post. His regular expression works, but needs extra code after detection is done. I've managed to write a regular expression that does everything in a single go. This is how it looks like (I've broken it down into separate lines to make it more understandable what it does): 1 (?<outer>\()? 2 (?<scheme>http(?<secure>s)?://)? 3 (?<url> 4 (?(scheme) 5 (?:www\.)? 6 | 7 www\. 8 ) 9 [a-z0-9] 10 (?(outer) 11 [-a-z0-9/+&@#/%?=~_()|!:,.;cšžcd]+(?=\)) 12 | 13 [-a-z0-9/+&@#/%?=~_()|!:,.;cšžcd]+ 14 ) 15 ) 16 (?<ending>(?(outer)\))) As you may see, I'm using named capture groups (used later in Regex.Replace()) and I've also included some local characters (cšžcd), that allow our localised URLs to be parsed as well. You can easily omit them if you'd like. Anyway. Here's what it does (referring to line numbers): 1 - detects if URL starts with open braces (is contained inside braces) and stores it in "outer" named capture group 2 - checks if it starts with URL scheme also detecting whether scheme is SSL or not 3 - start parsing URL itself (will store it in "url" named capture group) 4-8 - if statement that says: if "sheme" was present then www. part is optional, otherwise mandatory for a string to be a link (so this regular expression detects all strings that start with either http or www) 9 - first character after http:// or www. should be either a letter or a number (this can be extended if you'd like to cover even more links, but I've decided not to because I can't think of a link that would start with some obscure character) 10-14 - if statement that says: if "outer" (braces) was present capture everything up to the last closing braces otherwise capture all 15 - closes the named capture group for URL 16 - if open braces were present, capture closing braces as well and store it in "ending" named capture group First and last line used to have \s* in them as well, so user could also write open braces and put a space inside before pasting link. Anyway. My code that does link replacement with actual anchor HTML elements looks exactly like this: value = Regex.Replace( value, @"(?<outer>\()?(?<scheme>http(?<secure>s)?://)?(?<url>(?(scheme)(?:www\.)?|www\.)[a-z0-9](?(outer)[-a-z0-9/+&@#/%?=~_()|!:,.;cšžcd]+(?=\))|[-a-z0-9/+&@#/%?=~_()|!:,.;cšžcd]+))(?<ending>(?(outer)\)))", "${outer}<a href=\"http${secure}://${url}\">http${secure}://${url}</a>${ending}", RegexOptions.Compiled | RegexOptions.CultureInvariant | RegexOptions.IgnoreCase); As you can see I'm using named capture groups to replace link with an Anchor tag: "${outer}<a href=\"http${secure}://${url}\">http${secure}://${url}</a>${ending}" I could as well omit the http(s) part in anchor display to make links look friendlier, but for now I decided not to. Question I would like my links to be replaced with shortenings as well. So when user copies a very long link (for instance if they would copy a link from google maps that usually generates long links) I would like to shorten the visible part of the anchor tag. Link would work, but visible part of an anchor tag would be shortened to some number of characters. I could as well append ellipsis at the end of at all possible (and make things even more perfect). Does Regex.Replace() method support replacement notations so that I can still use a single call? Something similar as string.Format() method does when you'd like to format values in string format (decimals, dates etc...).

  • How do I edit an XML file with Perl?

    - by thebourneid
    I have a movie collection catalogue with local links to folders and files for an easy access. Recently I reorganaized my entire hard disk space and I need to update the links and I'm trying to do that automatically with Perl. I can export the data in a XML file and import it again. I can extract the new filepaths with the use of File::Find but I'm stuck with two problems. I have no idea how to connect the $title from the new filepath with the corresponding $title from the XML file. I'm dealing with such files for the first time and I don't know how to proceed with the replacement process. Here is what I've done till now use strict; use warnings; use File::Basename; use File::Find; use File::Spec; use XML::Simple; use Data::Dumper; my $dir_target = 'D:/Movies/'; my %titles_locations = (); find(\&file_handler, $dir_target); sub file_handler { /\.iso$/ or return; my $fn = $File::Find::name; $fn =~ s/\//\\/g; $fn =~ /(.*\\)(.*)/; my $path = $1; my $filename = $2; my $title = (File::Spec->splitdir($fn))[2]; $title =~ s/(.*?)\s\(\d+\)$/$1/; $title =~ s/~/:/; $title =~ s/`/?/; my $link_local = '<link><description>Folder</description><url>'.$path.'</url><urltype>Movie</urltype></link><link><description>'.$filename.'</description><url>'.$fn.'</url><urltype>Movie</urltype></link>' unless $title eq ''; $titles_locations{$title} = {'filename'=>$filename, 'path'=>$path }; } my $xml_in = XMLin('somepath/test.xml', ForceArray => 1, KeepRoot => 1); my $title = {'key1' => 'title', 'key2' => 'links'}; foreach my $link (keys %$title) { } print Data::Dumper->Dump([$title]); my $xml_out = XMLout($xml_in, OutputFile => 'somepath/test_out.xml', KeepRoot=>1); And here is a snippet of the data I need to edit. If found imdb and dvdempire link - do not touch. if found local links replace, otherwise insert. I'm willing to complete the code myself but need some directions how to proceed further. • wxPthon problems with Wrapping StaticText

    - by Scott B
    Hello. I am having an issue with wxPython. A simplified version of the code is posted below (white space, comments, etc removed to reduce size - but the general format to my program is kept roughly the same). When I run the script, the static text correctly wraps as it should, but the other items in the panel do not move down (they act as if the statictext is only one line and thus not everything is visible). If I manually resize the window/frame, even just a tiny amount, everything gets corrected and displays as it is should. I took screen shots to show this behavior, but I just created this account and thus don't have the required 10 reputation points to be allowed to post pictures. Why does it not display correctly to begin with? I've tried all sorts of combination's of GetParent().Refresh() or Update() and GetTopLevelParent().Update() or Refresh(). I've tried everything I can think of but cannot get it to display correctly without manually resizing the frame/window. Once re-sized, it works exactly as I want it to. Information: Windows XP Python 2.5.2 wxPython 2.8.11.0 (msw-unicode) Any suggestions? Thanks! Code: #! /usr/bin/python import wx class StaticWrapText(wx.PyControl): def __init__(self, parent, id=wx.ID_ANY, label='', pos=wx.DefaultPosition, size=wx.DefaultSize, style=wx.NO_BORDER, validator=wx.DefaultValidator, name='StaticWrapText'): wx.PyControl.__init__(self, parent, id, pos, size, style, validator, name) self.statictext = wx.StaticText(self, wx.ID_ANY, label, style=style) self.wraplabel = label #self.wrap() def wrap(self): self.Freeze() self.statictext.SetLabel(self.wraplabel) self.statictext.Wrap(self.GetSize().width) self.Thaw() def DoGetBestSize(self): self.wrap() #print self.statictext.GetSize() self.SetSize(self.statictext.GetSize()) return self.GetSize() class TestPanel(wx.Panel): def __init__(self, *args, **kwargs): # Init the base class wx.Panel.__init__(self, *args, **kwargs) self.createControls() def createControls(self): # --- Panel2 ------------------------------------------------------------- self.Panel2 = wx.Panel(self, -1) msg1 = 'Below is a List of Files to be Processed' staticBox = wx.StaticBox(self.Panel2, label=msg1) Panel2_box1_v1 = wx.StaticBoxSizer(staticBox, wx.VERTICAL) Panel2_box2_h1 = wx.BoxSizer(wx.HORIZONTAL) Panel2_box3_v1 = wx.BoxSizer(wx.VERTICAL) self.wxL_Inputs = wx.ListBox(self.Panel2, wx.ID_ANY, style=wx.LB_EXTENDED) sz = dict(size=(120,-1)) wxB_AddFile = wx.Button(self.Panel2, label='Add File', **sz) wxB_DeleteFile = wx.Button(self.Panel2, label='Delete Selected', **sz) wxB_ClearFiles = wx.Button(self.Panel2, label='Clear All', **sz) Panel2_box3_v1.Add(wxB_AddFile, 0, wx.TOP, 0) Panel2_box3_v1.Add(wxB_DeleteFile, 0, wx.TOP, 0) Panel2_box3_v1.Add(wxB_ClearFiles, 0, wx.TOP, 0) Panel2_box2_h1.Add(self.wxL_Inputs, 1, wx.ALL|wx.EXPAND, 2) Panel2_box2_h1.Add(Panel2_box3_v1, 0, wx.ALL|wx.EXPAND, 2) msg = 'This is a long line of text used to test the autowrapping ' msg += 'static text message. • urllib2 misbehaving with dynamically loaded content

    - by Sheena
    Some Code headers = {} headers['user-agent'] = 'User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Ubuntu; Linux x86_64; rv:16.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/16.0' headers['Accept'] = 'text/html,application/xhtml+xml,application/xml;q=0.9,*/*;q=0.8' headers['Accept-Language'] = 'en-gb,en;q=0.5' #headers['Accept-Encoding'] = 'gzip, deflate' request = urllib.request.Request(sURL, headers = headers) try: response = urllib.request.urlopen(request) except error.HTTPError as e: print('The server couldn\'t fulfill the request.') print('Error code: {0}'.format(e.code)) except error.URLError as e: print('We failed to reach a server.') print('Reason: {0}'.format(e.reason)) else: f = open('output/{0}.html'.format(sFileName),'w') f.write(response.read().decode('utf-8')) A url http://groupon.cl/descuentos/santiago-centro The situation Here's what I did: enable javascript in browser open url above and keep an eye on the console disable javascript repeat step 2 use urllib2 to grab the webpage and save it to a file enable javascript open the file with browser and observe console repeat 7 with javascript off results In step 2 I saw that a whole lot of the page content was loaded dynamically using ajax. So the HTML that arrived was a sort of skeleton and ajax was used to fill in the gaps. This is fine and not at all surprising Since the page should be seo friendly it should work fine without js. in step 4 nothing happens in the console and the skeleton page loads pre-populated rendering the ajax unnecessary. This is also completely not confusing in step 7 the ajax calls are made but fail. this is also ok since the urls they are using are not local, the calls are thus broken. The page looks like the skeleton. This is also great and expected. in step 8: no ajax calls are made and the skeleton is just a skeleton. I would have thought that this should behave very much like in step 4 question What I want to do is use urllib2 to grab the html from step 4 but I cant figure out how. What am I missing and how could I pull this off? To paraphrase If I was writing a spider I would want to be able to grab plain ol' HTML (as in that which resulted in step 4). I dont want to execute ajax stuff or any javascript at all. I don't want to populate anything dynamically. I just want HTML. The seo friendly site wants me to get what I want because that's what seo is all about. How would one go about getting plain HTML content given the situation I outlined? To do it manually I would turn off js, navigate to the page and copy the html. I want to automate this. stuff I've tried I used wireshark to look at packet headers and the GETs sent off from my pc in steps 2 and 4 have the same headers. Reading about SEO stuff makes me think that this is pretty normal otherwise techniques such as hijax wouldn't be used. Here are the headers my browser sends: Host: groupon.cl User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Ubuntu; Linux x86_64; rv:16.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/16.0 Accept: text/html,application/xhtml+xml,application/xml;q=0.9,*/*;q=0.8 Accept-Language: en-gb,en;q=0.5 Accept-Encoding: gzip, deflate Connection: keep-alive Here are the headers my script sends: Accept-Encoding: identity Host: groupon.cl Accept-Language: en-gb,en;q=0.5 Connection: close Accept: text/html,application/xhtml+xml,application/xml;q=0.9,*/*;q=0.8 User-Agent: User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Ubuntu; Linux x86_64; rv:16.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/16.0 The differences are: my script has Connection = close instead of keep-alive. I can't see how this would cause a problem my script has Accept-encoding = identity. This might be the cause of the problem. I can't really see why the host would use this field to determine the user-agent though. If I change encoding to match the browser request headers then I have trouble decoding it. I'm working on this now... watch this space, I'll update the question as new info comes up

  • How to get Rid of this strange Border on JButton in Windows System look and Feel?

    - by Timo J.
    I have a small Problem with the Layout of my Frame. As You could see in a picture (if i would have my 10 rep ;) ) there is a small Border around my JButtons. I'm already searching long time on this topic and i finally decided to ask for help, i'm just out of ideas. Is this Part of the Windows Theme which shouldn't be changed? It just doesnt fit into my current Layout, as I'm Listing TextBoxes and Comboboxes on Page Axis without any Border. I would be very happy if there is solution for this issue. Thanks in advance! EDIT 1: I do not mean the Focus Border. I like the Highlighting of a focussed Element. What i mean is the Border in the Background Color which causes a small distance of background-colored space beetween a JButton and another Element. (Picture on Personnal Webspace: http://tijamocobs.no-ip.biz/border_jbutton.png) EDIT 2: I'm using the Windows 8 Look and Feel but saw this Problem on Windows 7 Look and Feel, too. short Example import javax.swing.BoxLayout; import javax.swing.JButton; import javax.swing.JFrame; import javax.swing.UIManager; import javax.swing.UnsupportedLookAndFeelException; public class TestFrame extends JFrame { public TestFrame(){ setLayout(new BoxLayout(getContentPane(), BoxLayout.PAGE_AXIS)); for (int i = 0; i < 3; i++) { JButton btn = new JButton("."); // not working: // btn.setBorder(null); // btn.setBorder(BorderFactory.createEmptyBorder()); add(btn); } pack(); } public static void main(String[] args) throws ClassNotFoundException, InstantiationException, IllegalAccessException, UnsupportedLookAndFeelException { UIManager.setLookAndFeel(UIManager.getSystemLookAndFeelClassName()); TestFrame tiss = new TestFrame(); tiss.setVisible(true); } } Example Code (long version): import java.awt.BorderLayout; import java.awt.Container; import java.awt.Dimension; import javax.swing.Box; import javax.swing.BoxLayout; import javax.swing.JButton; import javax.swing.JComboBox; import javax.swing.JFrame; import javax.swing.JLabel; import javax.swing.JPanel; import javax.swing.UIManager; import javax.swing.UnsupportedLookAndFeelException; public class TestFrame extends JFrame { public TestFrame(){ JPanel muh = new JPanel(); muh.setLayout(new BoxLayout(muh, BoxLayout.PAGE_AXIS)); for (int i = 0; i < 3; i++) { Container c = new JPanel(); c.setLayout(new BoxLayout(c, BoxLayout.LINE_AXIS)); Box bx = Box.createHorizontalBox(); final String[] tmp = {"anything1","anything2"}; JComboBox<String> cmbbx = new JComboBox<String>(tmp); cmbbx.setMinimumSize(new Dimension(80,20)); bx.add(cmbbx); JButton btn = new JButton("."); btn.setMinimumSize(new Dimension(cmbbx.getMinimumSize().height,cmbbx.getMinimumSize().height)); btn.setPreferredSize(new Dimension(30,30)); btn.setMaximumSize(new Dimension(30,30)); bx.add(btn); c.setMaximumSize(new Dimension(Integer.MAX_VALUE,30)); c.add(new JLabel("Just anything")); c.add(bx); muh.add(c); } add(muh,BorderLayout.CENTER); pack(); } public static void main(String[] args) throws ClassNotFoundException, InstantiationException, IllegalAccessException, UnsupportedLookAndFeelException { UIManager.setLookAndFeel(UIManager.getSystemLookAndFeelClassName()); TestFrame tiss = new TestFrame(); tiss.setVisible(true); } }

    My XSL source document looks like this <Topology> <Environment> <Id>test</Id> <Machines> <Machine> <Id>machine1</Id> <modules> <module>m1</module> <module>m2</module> </modules> </Machine> </Machines> </Environment> <Environment> <Id>production</Id> <Machines> <Machine> <Id>machine1</Id> <modules> <module>m1</module> <module>m2</module> </modules> </Machine> <Machine> <Id>machine2</Id> <modules> <module>m3</module> <module>m4</module> </modules> </Machine> </Machines> </Environment> </Topology> I want to create one result-document per machine, so I use the following stylesheet giving modelDir as path for the result-documents as parameter. <xsl:output method="xml" version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" indent="yes" name="myXML" doctype-system="http://java.sun.com/dtd/properties.dtd"/> <xsl:template match="/"> <xsl:for-each-group select="/Topology/Environment/Machines/Machine" group-by="Id"> <xsl:variable name="machine" select="Id"/> <xsl:variable name="filename" select="concat($modelDir,$machine,'.xml')" /> <xsl:message terminate="no">Writing machine description to <xsl:value-of select="$filename"/></xsl:message> <xsl:result-document href="$filename" format="myXML"> <xsl:variable name="currentMachine" select="Id"/> <xsl:for-each select="current-group()/LogicalHosts/LogicalHost"> <xsl:variable name="environment" select="normalize-space(../../../../Id)"/> <xsl:message terminate="no">Module <xsl:value-of select="."/> for <xsl:value-of select="$environment"/></xsl:message> </xsl:for-each> </xsl:result-document> </xsl:for-each-group> </xsl:template> As my messages show me this seems to work fine - if saxon would not evaluate the URI of the result-document to be the same and thus give the following output. Writing machine description to target/build/model/m1.xml Module m1 for test Module m2 for test Module m1 for production Module m2 for production Writing machine description to target/build/model/m2.xml Error at xsl:result-document on line 29 of file:/C:/Projekte/.../machine.xsl: XTDE1490: Cannot write more than one result document to the same URI, or write to a URI that has been read: file:/C:/Projekte/.../$filename file:/C:/Projekte/.../machine.xsl(29,-1) : here Cannot write more than one result document to the same URI, or write to a URI that has been read: file:/C:/Projekte/.../$filename ; SystemID: file:/C:/Projekte/.../machine.xsl; Line#: 29; Column#: -1 net.sf.saxon.trans.DynamicError: Cannot write more than one result document to the same URI, or write to a URI that has been read: file:/C:/Projekte/.../$filename at net.sf.saxon.instruct.ResultDocument.processLeavingTail(ResultDocument.java:300) at net.sf.saxon.instruct.Block.processLeavingTail(Block.java:365) at net.sf.saxon.instruct.Instruction.process(Instruction.java:91) Any ideas on how to solve this?

  • What can be improved in this PHP code?

    - by Noctis Skytower
    This is a custom encryption library. I do not know much about PHP's standard library of functions and was wondering if the following code can be improved in any way. The implementation should yield the same results, the API should remain as it is, but ways to make is more PHP-ish would be greatly appreciated. Code <?php /*************************************** Create random major and minor SPICE key. ***************************************/ function crypt_major() { $all = range("\x00", "\xFF"); shuffle($all); $major_key = implode("", $all); return $major_key; } function crypt_minor() { $sample = array(); do { array_push($sample, 0, 1, 2, 3); } while (count($sample) != 256); shuffle($sample); $list = array(); for ($index = 0; $index < 64; $index++) { $b12 = $sample[$index * 4] << 6; $b34 = $sample[$index * 4 + 1] << 4; $b56 = $sample[$index * 4 + 2] << 2; $b78 = $sample[$index * 4 + 3]; array_push($list, $b12 + $b34 + $b56 + $b78); } $minor_key = implode("", array_map("chr", $list)); return $minor_key; } /*************************************** Create the SPICE key via the given name. ***************************************/ function named_major($name) { srand(crc32($name)); return crypt_major(); } function named_minor($name) { srand(crc32($name)); return crypt_minor(); } /*************************************** Check validity for major and minor keys. ***************************************/ function _check_major($key) { if (is_string($key) && strlen($key) == 256) { foreach (range("\x00", "\xFF") as $char) { if (substr_count($key, $char) == 0) { return FALSE; } } return TRUE; } return FALSE; } function _check_minor($key) { if (is_string($key) && strlen($key) == 64) { $indexs = array(); foreach (array_map("ord", str_split($key)) as $byte) { foreach (range(6, 0, 2) as $shift) { array_push($indexs, ($byte >> $shift) & 3); } } $dict = array_count_values($indexs); foreach (range(0, 3) as $index) { if ($dict[$index] != 64) { return FALSE; } } return TRUE; } return FALSE; } /*************************************** Create encode maps for encode functions. ***************************************/ function _encode_map_1($major) { return array_map("ord", str_split($major)); } function _encode_map_2($minor) { $map_2 = array(array(), array(), array(), array()); $list = array(); foreach (array_map("ord", str_split($minor)) as $byte) { foreach (range(6, 0, 2) as $shift) { array_push($list, ($byte >> $shift) & 3); } } for ($byte = 0; $byte < 256; $byte++) { array_push($map_2[$list[$byte]], chr($byte)); } return $map_2; } /*************************************** Create decode maps for decode functions. ***************************************/ function _decode_map_1($minor) { $map_1 = array(); foreach (array_map("ord", str_split($minor)) as $byte) { foreach (range(6, 0, 2) as $shift) { array_push($map_1, ($byte >> $shift) & 3); } } return $map_1; }function _decode_map_2($major) { $map_2 = array(); $temp = array_map("ord", str_split($major)); for ($byte = 0; $byte < 256; $byte++) { $map_2[$temp[$byte]] = chr($byte); } return $map_2; } /*************************************** Encrypt or decrypt the string with maps. ***************************************/ function _encode($string, $map_1, $map_2) { $cache = ""; foreach (str_split($string) as $char) { $byte = $map_1[ord($char)]; foreach (range(6, 0, 2) as $shift) { $cache .= $map_2[($byte >> $shift) & 3][mt_rand(0, 63)]; } } return $cache; } function _decode($string, $map_1, $map_2) { $cache = ""; $temp = str_split($string); for ($iter = 0; $iter < strlen($string) / 4; $iter++) { $b12 = $map_1[ord($temp[$iter * 4])] << 6; $b34 = $map_1[ord($temp[$iter * 4 + 1])] << 4; $b56 = $map_1[ord($temp[$iter * 4 + 2])] << 2; $b78 = $map_1[ord($temp[$iter * 4 + 3])]; $cache .= $map_2[$b12 + $b34 + $b56 + $b78]; } return $cache; } /*************************************** This is the public interface for coding. ***************************************/ function encode_string($string, $major, $minor) { if (is_string($string)) { if (_check_major($major) && _check_minor($minor)) { $map_1 = _encode_map_1($major); $map_2 = _encode_map_2($minor); return _encode($string, $map_1, $map_2); } } return FALSE; } function decode_string($string, $major, $minor) { if (is_string($string) && strlen($string) % 4 == 0) { if (_check_major($major) && _check_minor($minor)) { $map_1 = _decode_map_1($minor); $map_2 = _decode_map_2($major); return _decode($string, $map_1, $map_2); } } return FALSE; } ?> This is a sample showing how the code is being used.   • can't implement jquery jScrollPane to replace browser's scrollbars

    - by Zack
    I am trying to replace browser's scrollbars with jScrollPane (jQuery), it won't work. Here are two attempts to implement it: a basic attempt, and an attempt to imitate the full page demo for jScrollPane. I've been trying everything I could think of to figure out what didn't work, but couldn't. here is my code: <!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/html4/loose.dtd"> <html> <head> <title></title> <!-- styles needed by jScrollPane --> <link type="text/css" href="style/jquery.jscrollpane.css" rel="stylesheet" media="all" /> <style type="text/css" id="page-css"> /* Styles specific to this particular page */ html { overflow: auto; } #full-page-container { overflow: auto; } .scroll-pane { width: 100%; height: 200px; overflow: auto; } .horizontal-only { height: auto; max-height: 200px; } </style> <!-- latest jQuery direct from google's CDN --> <script type="text/javascript" src="http://ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/libs/jquery/1.7.1/jquery.min.js"></script> <!-- the mousewheel plugin --> <script type="text/javascript" src="script/jquery.mousewheel.js"></script> <!-- the jScrollPane script --> <script type="text/javascript" src="script/jquery.jscrollpane.min.js"></script> <script type="text/javascript" id="sourcecode"> $(function () { var win = $(window); // Full body scroll var isResizing = false; win.bind( 'resize', function () { if (!isResizing) { isResizing = true; var container = $('#full-page-container'); // Temporarily make the container tiny so it doesn't influence the // calculation of the size of the document container.css( { 'width': 1, 'height': 1 } ); // Now make it the size of the window... container.css( { 'width': win.width(), 'height': win.height() } ); isResizing = false; container.jScrollPane( { 'showArrows': true } ); } } ).trigger('resize'); // Workaround for known Opera issue which breaks demo (see // http://jscrollpane.kelvinluck.com/known_issues.html#opera-scrollbar ) $('body').css('overflow', 'hidden'); // IE calculates the width incorrectly first time round (it // doesn't count the space used by the native scrollbar) so // we re-trigger if necessary. if ($('#full-page-container').width() != win.width()) { win.trigger('resize'); } }); </script> </head> <body> <div id="full-page-container"> This is the most basic implementation of jScrollPane I could create, if I am not wrong this has all it should take, yet it doesn't work. a little lorem ipsum to make the scrollbars show up: [here come's lot's of lorem ipsum text in the actual page...] </div> </body> </html> The other option is the same, with a link to demo.css and demo.js.

  • Internet Explorer background-color hover problem

    - by danilo
    I have a strange Problem with table formating using IE 7. My table looks like this: In IE, when using border-collapse, the borders don't get displayed correctly. That's why I used this fix: .table-vmlist td { border-top: 1px solid black; } td.col-vm-status, tr.row-details td { border-left: 1px solid black; } td.col-vm-rdp, tr.row-details td { border-right: 1px solid black; } .table-vmlist { border-bottom: 1px solid black;} When hovering over the row, it gets highlighted with CSS: .table-vmlist tr.row-vm { background-color: #A4C3EF; } .table-vmlist tr.row-vm:hover { background-color: #91BAEF; } Now, in IE 7, when moving the mouse from the top to the bottom of the list, every row gets highlighted correctly and no problems happen. But if I move my mouse pointer from the bottom of the list to the top, every second row seems to loose the border. Can someone explain what the problem is, and how to solve it? This is my markup: <tr class="row-vm"> <td class="col-vm-status status-1"><img title="Host Down" alt="Down" src="/Technik/vm-management/img/hoststatus_1.png"></td> <td class="col-vm-name">V1-VM-1</td> <td class="col-vm-stati"> <img title="Ping" alt="Ping status" src="/Technik/vm-management/img/servicestatus_3.png"> <img title="CPU" alt="CPU status" src="/Technik/vm-management/img/servicestatus_3.png"> <img title="RAM" alt="RAM status" src="/Technik/vm-management/img/servicestatus_3.png"> <img title="C:\ Diskspace" alt="Disk space status" src="/Technik/vm-management/img/servicestatus_3.png"> </td> <td class="col-vm-owner">kus</td> <td class="col-vm-purpose">Citrix Testserver</td> <td class="col-vm-ip">-</td> <td class="col-vm-uptime">-</td> <td class="col-vm-rdp">&nbsp;</td> </tr> And the CSS: /* VM-Tabelle formatieren */ .table-vmlist { border-collapse: collapse; } .table-vmlist tr { border: 1px solid black; } .table-vmlist tr.row-header { border: none; } .table-vmlist tr.row-vm { background-color: #A4C3EF; } .table-vmlist tr.row-vm:hover { background-color: #91BAEF; } .table-vmlist th { text-align: left; } .table-vmlist td { } .table-vmlist th, table td { padding: 2px 0px; } /* Spaltenbreite der VM-Tabelle festlegen */ .table-vmlist #col-status { width: 25px; } .table-vmlist #col-stati { width: 90px; } .table-vmlist #col-owner { width: 90px; } .table-vmlist #col-ip { width: 100px; } .table-vmlist #col-uptime { width: 70px; } .table-vmlist #col-rdp { width: 25px; } .table-vmlist tr.row-details td { padding: 0px 10px; } /* Kein Rahmen um verlinkte Bilder */ a img { border-width: 0px; } /* Für Einschaltknopf Hand-Cursor anstatt normalen Pfeil anzeigen */ td.status-1 img { cursor: pointer; } img.ajax-loader { margin-left: 2px; } IE fix: .table-vmlist td { border-top: 1px solid black; } td.col-vm-status, tr.row-details td { border-left: 1px solid black; } td.col-vm-rdp, tr.row-details td { border-right: 1px solid black; } .table-vmlist { border-bottom: 1px solid black;}

  • jQuery animation menu height

    - by StealthRT
    Hey all i have the following jsfiddle Fiddle that i need some help on. When i have my mouse over it-it expands out to a static width but, depending on the text length, it grabs it by the inner's text $('.inner').height(). Problem being is that it goes a little too far beyond the last text list item and when i roll over any of the text in the menu box it slides back up a little. How can prevent it from (1) sliding back up and (2) have the exact height needed without even having the extra space at the bottom of the box for its height? The JS: $(document).ready(function() { $('#menuSquare, .inner').mouseout(function() { theMenu('close'); }); $('#menuSquare, .inner').mouseover(function() { theMenu('open'); }); }); function theMenu(what2Do) { if (what2Do == 'open') { $('#menuSquare').stop().animate({ width: 190, //95 height: $('.inner').height(), duration:900, 'padding-top' : 10, 'padding-right' : 10, 'padding-bottom' : 10, 'padding-left' : 10, backgroundColor: '#fff', opacity: 0.8 }, 1000,'easeOutCubic') } else { $('#menuSquare').stop().animate({ width: "20", height: "20", padding: '0px', backgroundColor: '#e51937', opacity: 0.8 }, 500,'easeInCirc') } }? The HTML: <div id="menuSquare" class="TheMenuBox" style="overflow: hidden; width: 20px; height: 20px; background-color: rgb(229, 25, 55); opacity: 0.8; padding: 0px;"> <div class="inner"> <p style="text-decoration:none; color:#666; cursor: pointer; " onclick="changeImg('Custom Homes');">Custom Homes</p> <p style="text-decoration:none; color:#666; cursor: pointer; " onclick="changeImg('Full Service Hotels');">Full Service Hotels</p> <p style="text-decoration:none; color:#666; cursor: pointer; " onclick="changeImg('Mixed Use');">Mixed Use</p> <p style="text-decoration:none; color:#666; cursor: pointer; " onclick="changeImg('Office');">Office</p> <p style="text-decoration:none; color:#666; cursor: pointer; " onclick="changeImg('Retail');">Retail</p> <p style="text-decoration:none; color:#666; cursor: pointer; " onclick="changeImg('Select Service Hotels');">Select Service Hotels</p> </div> </div>

  • Node.js, Cygwin and Socket.io walk into a bar... Node.js throws ENOBUFS and everyone dies...

    - by A Wizard Did It
    I'm hoping someone here can help me out, I'm not having much luck figuring this out myself. I'm running node.js version 0.3.1 on Cygwin. I'm using Connect and Socket.io. I seem to be having some random problems with DNS or something, I haven't quite figured it out. The end result is that I the server is running fine, but when a browser attempts to connect to it the initial HTTP Request works, Socket.io connects, and then the server dies (output below). I don't think it has anything to do with the HTTP request because the server gets a lot data posted to it, and it was receiving requests and responding up until my connection that killed it. I've googled around and the closest thing I've found is DNS being set improperly. I've edited the source to include && errno != ENOBUFS which now prevents the server from dying, however now the LDAP request isn't working. I'm not sure what the problem is that would cause that though. As I mentioned this is an internal only application, so I set the DNS servers in /etc/resolv.conf to the DNS servers that are being applied to the host machine. Not sure if this is part of the issue? • Element.appendChild() hosed in IE .. workaround? (related to innerText vs textContent)

    - by Rowe Morehouse
    I've heard that using el.innerText||el.textContent can yield unreliable cross-browswer results, so I'm walking the DOM tree to collect text nodes recursively, and write them into tags in the HTML body. What this script does is read hash substring valus from the window.location and write them into the HTML. This script is working for me in Chrome & Firefox, but choking in IE. I call the page with an URL syntax like this: http://example.com/pagename.html#dyntext=FOO&dynterm=BAR&dynimage=FRED UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE Solution: I moved the scripts to before </body> (where they should have been) then removed console.log(sPageURL); and now it's working in Chrome, Firefox, IE8 and IE9. This my workaround for the innerText vs textContent crossbrowser issue when you are just placing text rather than getting text. In this case, getting hash substring values from the window.location and writing them into the page. <html> <body> <span id="dyntext-span" style="font-weight: bold;"></span><br /> <span id="dynterm-span" style="font-style: italic;"></span><br /> <span id="dynimage-span" style="text-decoration: underline;"></span><br /> <script src="http://ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/libs/jquery/1.8/jquery.min.js"></script> <script> $(document).ready(function() { var tags = ["dyntext", "dynterm", "dynimage"]; for (var i = 0; i < tags.length; ++i) { var param = GetURLParameter(tags[i]); if (param) { var dyntext = GetURLParameter('dyntext'); var dynterm = GetURLParameter('dynterm'); var dynimage = GetURLParameter('dynimage'); } } var elem = document.getElementById("dyntext-span"); var text = document.createTextNode(dyntext); elem.appendChild(text); var elem = document.getElementById("dynterm-span"); var text = document.createTextNode(dynterm); elem.appendChild(text); var elem = document.getElementById("dynimage-span"); var text = document.createTextNode(dynimage); elem.appendChild(text); }); function GetURLParameter(sParam) { var sPageURL = window.location.hash.substring(1); var sURLVariables = sPageURL.split('&'); for (var i = 0; i < sURLVariables.length; i++) { var sParameterName = sURLVariables[i].split('='); if (sParameterName[0] == sParam) { return sParameterName[1]; } } } </script> </body> </html> FINAL UPDATE If your hash substring values require spaces (like a linguistic phrase with three words, for example) then separate the words with the + character in your URI, and replace the unicode \u002B character with a space when you create each text node, like this: var elem = document.getElementById("dyntext-span"); var text = document.createTextNode(dyntext.replace(/\u002B/g, " ")); elem.appendChild(text); var elem = document.getElementById("dynterm-span"); var text = document.createTextNode(dynterm.replace(/\u002B/g, " ")); elem.appendChild(text); var elem = document.getElementById("dynimage-span"); var text = document.createTextNode(dynimage.replace(/\u002B/g, " ")); elem.appendChild(text); Now form your URI like this: http://example.com/pagename.html#dyntext=FOO+MAN+CHU&dynterm=BAR+HOPPING&dynimage=FRED+IS+DEAD

  • How to draw complex shape from code behind for custom control in resource dictionary

    - by HopelessCoder
    Hi I am new to wpf and am having a problem which may or may not be trivial. I have defined a custom control as follows in the resource dictionary: <ResourceDictionary x:Class="SyringeSlider.Themes.Generic" xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml/presentation" xmlns:x="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml" xmlns:local="clr-namespace:SyringeSlider"> <Style TargetType="{x:Type local:CustomControl1}"> <Setter Property="Template"> <Setter.Value> <ControlTemplate TargetType="{x:Type local:CustomControl1}"> <Border Background="{TemplateBinding Background}" BorderBrush="{TemplateBinding BorderBrush}" BorderThickness="{TemplateBinding BorderThickness}"> <Canvas Height="{TemplateBinding Height}" Width="{TemplateBinding Width}" Name="syringeCanvas"> </Canvas> </Border> </ControlTemplate> </Setter.Value> </Setter> </Style> </ResourceDictionary> Unfortunately I cannot go beyond this because I would like to draw a geometry onto the canvas consisting of a set of multiple line geometries whose dimensions are calculated as a function of the space available in the canvas. I believe that I need a code behind method to do this, but have not been able to determine how to link the xaml definition to a code behind method. Note that I have set up a class x:Class="SyringeSlider.Themes.Generic" for specifically this purpose, but can't figure out which Canvas property to link the drawing method to. My drawing method looks like this private void CalculateSyringe() { int adjHeight = (int) Height - 1; int adjWidth = (int) Width - 1; // Calculate some very useful values based on the chart above. int borderOffset = (int)Math.Floor(m_borderWidth / 2.0f); int flangeLength = (int)(adjHeight * .05f); int barrelLeftCol = (int)(adjWidth * .10f); int barrelLength = (int)(adjHeight * .80); int barrelRightCol = adjWidth - barrelLeftCol; int coneLength = (int)(adjHeight * .10); int tipLeftCol = (int)(adjWidth * .45); int tipRightCol = adjWidth - tipLeftCol; int tipBotCol = adjWidth - borderOffset; Path mySyringePath = new Path(); PathGeometry mySyringeGeometry = new PathGeometry(); PathFigure mySyringeFigure = new PathFigure(); mySyringeFigure.StartPoint = new Point(0, 0); Point pointA = new Point(0, flangeLength); mySyringeFigure.Segments.Add(new LineSegment(pointA, true)); Point pointB = new Point(); pointB.Y = pointA.Y + barrelLength; pointB.X = 0; mySyringeFigure.Segments.Add(new LineSegment(pointB, true)); // You get the idea....Add more points in this way mySyringeGeometry.Figures.Add(mySyringeFigure); mySyringePath.Data = mySyringeGeometry; } SO my question is: 1) Does what I am trying to do make any sense? 2) Can a use a canvas for this purpose? If not, what are my other options? Thanks!

  • Drawing outlines around organic shapes

    - by ThunderChunky_SF
    One thing that seems particularly easy to do in the Flash IDE but difficult to do with code is to outline an organic shape. In the IDE you can just use the inkbucket tool to draw a stroke around something. Using nothing but code it seems much trickier. One method I've seen is to add a glow filter to the shape in question and just mess with the strength. But what if i want to only show the outline? What I'd like to do is to collect all of the points that make up the edge of the shape and then just connect the dots. I've actually gotten so far as to collect all of the points with a quick and dirty edge detection script that I wrote. So now I have a Vector of all the points that makeup my shape. How do I connect them in the proper sequence so it actually looks like the original object? For anyone who is interested here is my edge detection script: // Create a new sprite which we'll use for our outline var sp:Sprite = new Sprite(); var radius:int = 50; sp.graphics.beginFill(0x00FF00, 1); sp.graphics.drawCircle(0, 0, radius); sp.graphics.endFill(); sp.x = stage.stageWidth / 2; sp.y = stage.stageHeight / 2; // Create a bitmap data object to draw our vector data var bmd:BitmapData = new BitmapData(sp.width, sp.height, true, 0); // Use a transform matrix to translate the drawn clip so that none of its // pixels reside in negative space. The draw method will only draw starting // at 0,0 var mat:Matrix = new Matrix(1, 0, 0, 1, radius, radius); bmd.draw(sp, mat); // Pass the bitmap data to an actual bitmap var bmp:Bitmap = new Bitmap(bmd); // Add the bitmap to the stage addChild(bmp); // Grab all of the pixel data from the bitmap data object var pixels:Vector.<uint> = bmd.getVector(bmd.rect); // Setup a vector to hold our stroke points var points:Vector.<Point> = new Vector.<Point>; // Loop through all of the pixels of the bitmap data object and // create a point instance for each pixel location that isn't // transparent. var l:int = pixels.length; for(var i:int = 0; i < l; ++i) { // Check to see if the pixel is transparent if(pixels[i] != 0) { var pt:Point; // Check to see if the pixel is on the first or last // row. We'll grab everything from these rows to close the outline if(i <= bmp.width || i >= (bmp.width * bmp.height) - bmp.width) { pt = new Point(); pt.x = int(i % bmp.width); pt.y = int(i / bmp.width); points.push(pt); continue; } // Check to see if the current pixel is on either extreme edge if(int(i % bmp.width) == 0 || int(i % bmp.width) == bmp.width - 1) { pt = new Point(); pt.x = int(i % bmp.width); pt.y = int(i / bmp.width); points.push(pt); continue; } // Check to see if the previous or next pixel are transparent, // if so save the current one. if(i > 0 && i < bmp.width * bmp.height) { if(pixels[i - 1] == 0 || pixels[i + 1] == 0) { pt = new Point(); pt.x = int(i % bmp.width); pt.y = int(i / bmp.width); points.push(pt); } } } }

  • Custom Online Backup Solution Advice

    - by Martín Marconcini
    I have to implement a way so our customers can backup their SQL 2000/5/8 databasase online. The application they use is a C#/.NET35 Winforms application that connects to a SQL Server (can be 2000/2005/2008, sometimes express editions). The SQL Server is on the same LAN. Our application has a very specific UI and we must code each form following those guidelines. There’s lots of GDI+ to give it the look and feel we want. For that reason, using a 3rd party application is not a very good idea. We need to charge the customer on a monthly/annual basis for the service. Preferably, the customer doesn’t need to care about bandwidth and storage space. It must be transparent. Given the above reqs., my first thoughts are: Solution 1: Code some sort of FTP basic functionality with behind the scenes SQL Backup mechanism, then hire a Hosting service and compress-transfer the .BAK to the Hosting. Maintain a series of Folders (for each customer). They won’t see what’s happening. They will just see a list of their files and a big “Backup now” button that will perform the SQL backup, compress it and upload it (and update the file list) ;) Pros: Not very complicated to implement, simple to use, fairly simple to configure (could have a dedicated ftp user/pass) Cons: Finding a “ftp” only hosting plan is not probably going to be easy, they usually come with a bunch of stuff. FTP is not always the best protocol. more? Solution 2: Similar to 1, but instead of FTP, find a cloud computing service like Amazon S3, Mosso or similar. Pros: Cloud Storage is fast, reliable, etc. It’s kind of easy to implement (specially if there are APIs like AWS or Mosso). Cons: I have been unable to come up with a service optimized for resellers where I can give multiple sub-accounts (one for each customer). Billing is going to be a nightmare cuz these services bill per/GB and with One account it’s impossible to differentiate each customer. Solution 3: Similar to 2, but letting the user create their own account on Amazon S3 (for example). Pros: You forget about billing and such. Cons: A mess for the customer who has to open the Amazon (or whatever) account, will be charged for that and not from you. You can’t really charge the customer (since you’re just not doing anything). Solution 4: Use one of the many backup online solutions that use the tech in cloud storage. Pros: many of these include SQL Server backup, and a lot of features that we’d have to implement. Plus web access and stuff like that will come included. Cons: Still have the billing problem described in number 2. Little of these companies (if any) offers “reseller” accounts. You have to eventually use their software (some offer certain branding). Any better approach? Summary: You have a software (.NET Winapp). You want your users to be able to backup their SQL Server databases online (and be able to retrieve the backups if needed). You ideally would like to charge the customer for this service (i.e. XX € a year).

  • Internet explorer and floats: please explain

    - by cletus
    Yesterday someone asked Width absorbing HTML elements. I presented two solutions: one table-based and one pure CSS. Now the pure CSS one works well in Firefox and Chrome but not in IE. Basically the floats are being bumped down to the next line. It is my understanding (and the behaviour of FF and Chrome) that this should not be the case because the left divs are block level elements that floats should basically ignore. Complete code example is below. Adding a DOCTYPE to force IE into standards compliant mode helps slightly but the problem remains. So my question is: am I mistaken about my understanding of floats or is this IE's problem? More importantly, how do I get this to work in IE? It's been bugging the hell out of me. <html> <head> <style type="text/css"> div div { height: 1.3em; } #wrapper { width: 300px; overflow: hidden; } div.text { float: right; white-space: nowrap; clear: both; background: white; padding-left: 12px; text-align: left; } #row1, #row2, #row3, #row4, #row5, #row6 { width: 270px; margin-bottom: 4px; } #row1 { background: red; } #row2 { background: blue; } #row3 { background: green; } #row4 { background: yellow; } #row5 { background: pink; } #row6 { background: gray; } </style> <script type="text/javascript" src="http://www.google.com/jsapi"></script> <script type="text/javascript"> google.load("jquery", "1.3.2"); google.setOnLoadCallback(function() { $(function() { $("div.text").animate({ width: "90%" }, 2000); }); }); </script> </head> <body> <div id="wrapper"> <div class="text">FOO</div><div id="row1"></div> <div class="text">BAR</div><div id="row2"></div> <div class="text">THESE PRETZELS ARE</div><div id="row3"></div> <div class="text">MAKING ME THIRSTY</div><div id="row4"></div> <div class="text">BLAH</div><div id="row5"></div> <div class="text">BLAH</div><div id="row6"></div> </div> </body> </html>

  • move carat to the end of a text input field AND make the end visible

    - by user322384
    I'm going insane. I have an autosuggest box where users choose a suggestion. On the next suggestion selection the value of the text input box exceeds its size. I can move the carat to the end of the input field crossbrowser, no problem. But on Chrome and Safari I cannot SEE the carat at the end. The end of the text is not visible. Is there a way to move the carat to the end of a text input field AND have the end of the field visible so that the user is not confused about where the input carat went? what I got so far: <html> <head><title>Field update test</title></head> <body> <form action="#" method="POST" name="testform"> <p>After a field is updated the carat should be at the end of the text field AND the end of the text should be visible</p> <input type="text" name="testbox" value="" size="40"> <p><a href="javascript:void(0);" onclick="add_more_text();">add more text</a></p> </form> <script type="text/javascript"> <!-- var count = 0; function add_more_text() { var textfield = document.testform.elements['testbox']; textfield.blur(); textfield.focus(); if (count == 0) textfield.value = ''; // clear old count++; textfield.value = (count ? textfield.value : '') + ", " + count + ": This is some sample text"; // move to the carat to the end of the field if (textfield.setSelectionRange) { textfield.setSelectionRange(textfield.value.length, textfield.value.length); } else if (textfield.createTextRange) { var range = textfield.createTextRange(); range.collapse(true); range.moveEnd('character', textfield.value.length); range.moveStart('character', textfield.value.length); range.select(); } // force carat visibility for some browsers if (document.createEvent) { // Trigger a space keypress. var e = document.createEvent('KeyboardEvent'); if (typeof(e.initKeyEvent) != 'undefined') { e.initKeyEvent('keypress', true, true, null, false, false, false, false, 0, 32); } else { e.initKeyboardEvent('keypress', true, true, null, false, false, false, false, 0, 32); } textfield.dispatchEvent(e); // Trigger a backspace keypress. e = document.createEvent('KeyboardEvent'); if (typeof(e.initKeyEvent) != 'undefined') { e.initKeyEvent('keypress', true, true, null, false, false, false, false, 8, 0); } else { e.initKeyboardEvent('keypress', true, true, null, false, false, false, false, 8, 0); } textfield.dispatchEvent(e); } } // --> </script> </body> </html> Thanks

After being reordered based on their types, the parameters will be stored as a tuple. My question is how this can be done so that a modern C++ compiler (e.g. g++-4.7) will not generate unnecessary load or store instructions. That is, when the constructor is invoked with a list of parameters of variable size, it efficiently pushes each parameter into place based on an ordering over the parameters' types. Here is a concrete example. Assume that the base type of every parameter (without references, rvalue references, pointers, or qualifiers) is either char, int, or float. How can I make it so that all the parameters of base type char appear first, followed by all of those of base type int (which leaves the parameters of base type float last). The relative order in which the parameters were given should not be violated within sublists of homogeneous base type. Example: foo::foo() is called with arguments float a, char&& b, const float& c, int&& d, char e. The tuple tupe is std::tuple<char, char, int, float, float>, and it is constructed like so: tuple_type{std::move(b), e, std::move(d), a, c}. Consider the struct defined below, and assume that the metafunction deduce_reordered_tuple_type is already implemented. How would you write the constructor so that it works as intended? If you think that the code for deduce_reodered_tuple_type, would be useful to you, I can provide it; it's a little long. template <class... Args> struct foo { // Assume that the metafunction deduce_reordered_tuple_type is defined. typedef typename deduce_reordered_tuple_type<Args...>::type tuple_type; tuple_type t_; foo(Args&&... args) : t_{reorder_and_forward_parameters<Args>(args)...} {} }; Edit 1 The technique I describe above does have applications in mathematical frameworks that make heavy use of expression templates, variadic templates, and metaprogramming in order to perform aggressive inlining. Suppose that you wish to define an operator that takes the product of several expressions, each of which may be passed by reference, reference to const, or rvalue reference. (In my case, the expressions are conditional probability tables and the operation is the factor product, but something like matrix multiplication works suitably as well.) You need access to the data provided by each expression in order to evaluate the product. Consequently, you must move the expressions passed as rvalue references, copy the expressions passed by reference to const, and take the addresses of expressions passed by reference. Using the technique I describe above now poses several benefits. Other expressions can use uniform syntax to access data elements from this expression, since all of the heavy-lifting metaprogramming work is done beforehand, within the class. We can save stack space by grouping the pointers together and storing the larger expressions towards the end of the tuple. Implementing certain types of queries becomes much easier (e.g. check whether any of the pointers stored in the tuple aliases a given pointer). Thank you very much for your help!
