  • What technical test should I give to a job candidate

    I'm not sure if this is the right stackexhange website, but : I have three candidates coming in tomorrow. One has 15 years of experience in PHP, and the two others have about 1 year of experience in PHP/ frontend development. For the last ones I was thinking about a test where they would have to develop a web app allowing users to manage other users, as in : Display a list of users, display a single user, modify an user, and add extended properties to an user. This way it would feature html, css, js, ajax, php and SQL. Do you think this would be a good test? What test should I give to the first one? He needs something much more difficult, I guess. I'm also listening, if you have any advice/ideas about what makes a good developer, and what I should pay attention to in the guys' codes. I was also considering thinking outside of the box, more algorithm-related, and asked him to make the fastest function to tell if a number is a prime number, because there are a lot of optimizations you can apply to such a function. They have one day to do it.

    I stumbled upon this news article on BBC, RSA splits passwords in two to foil hackers' attacks tl;dr - a (randomized) password is split in half and is stored across two separate servers, to foil hackers that gained access to either server upon a security breach. Now the main question is, how would this kind of system would be made... codespeaking, for PHP which I commonly develop on my web applications, the database password is normally stored in a configuration file, i.e. config.php with the username and password, in that case it is understandable that the passwords can be stolen if the security was compromised. However when splitting and sending the other half to the other server, how would this go on when making a communication to the other server (keeping in mind with PHP) since the other server password would be stored in a configuration file, wouldn't it? In terms of security is to keep the other server password away from the main one, just exactly how would the main server communicate, without exposing any other password, apart from the first server. This certainly makes me think...

  • chmod 700 and htaccess deny from all enough?

    I would like to protect a public directory from public view. None of the files will ever be viewed online. I chmoded the directory to 700 and created an htaccess file that has "deny from all" inside it. Is this enough security or can a hacker still gain access to the files? I know some people will say that hackers can get into anything, but I just want to make sure that there isn't anything else I can do to make it harder to hack. Reply: I am asking if chmod 700 and deny from all is enough security alone to prevent hackers from getting my files. Thanks.

    Hello, i am currently learning Java and PHP as I have some projects from university, which require me to apply both languages. Specifically, a Java GUI application, connecting to a MySQL database and a web application that will be implemented in PHP/MySQL. I have started learning the MVC pattern, Struts, Spring and I am also learning PHP with zend. My first question is: How can I find employment as a programmer/software engineer? The reason I ask is because I have sent my CV into many companys, but all of them stated that I required work experience. I really need some guidance on how to improve my career opportunites. At present, I work on my own and haven't worked in collaboration with anyone on a particular project. I'm assuming most people create projects and submit them along with their CVs. My second question is: Everyone has to make a start from somewhere, but what if this somewhere doesn't come? What do I need to do to create the circumstances where I can easily progress forward?   • Proper password handling for login

    I have read a lot about PHP login security recently, but many questions on Stack Overflow regarding security are outdated. I understand bcrypt is one of the best ways of hashing passwords today. However, for my site, I believe sha512 will do very well, at least to begin with. (I mean bcrypt is for bigger sites, sites that require high security, right?) I´m also wonder about salting. Is it necessary for every password to have its own unique salt? Should I have one field for the salt and one for the password in my database table? What would be a decent salt today? Should I join the username together with the password and add a random word/letter/special character combination to it? Thanks for your help!

Thanks I recently installed php 5.2.17 I ran a program which connect with a https server and I got the following error Notice: file_get_contents(): Unable to find the wrapper "https" - did you forget to enable it when you configured PHP? in C:\java\newsweaver-api-v2\simple\list- tags.php on line 30 I added extension=php_openssl.dll to php.ini but I'm wondering is openssl native to php 5.2.17 or do I need to download an extntion.   • One good reason for a rewrite

    I have a personal web project I cut my teeth on learning how to program. I wrote it in PHP and learned as I went. I eventually I re-factored it to use MVC and removed all mixing of php/html. Right now it has no users, save myself, and it makes no money. I have a strong desire to rewrite the entire app. Which really isn't that large of an app. I have a lot of reasons why I should not rewrite it. I know that I should move forward. It's a working app now and it will only set me back to rewrite it. But I can't shake this feeling that I would be better off using a different programming language in the long run. That I'd enjoy it more. That I'd feel comfortable with it. I feel like my one good reason to rewrite my app is that I have a gut feeling that I should. PHP seems like a hack thrown together. I want to use a language that feels more elegant to me. Any feedback you have would be welcome.

  • Remember me or not?

    I was told to post this on webmasters instead of stackoverflow. Is it safe to have the remember me feature? Would it be somewhat safe (knowing it won't be 100% safe) to allow users to close their browser and come back still logged in? I am not exacting sure which way I should go after reading different things about safety. I learned about session fixation and implemented security to add more protection. From experience, if remember me is checked then only your username/email appears and requires you to re-enter your password. Other sites allow you to come in and out as much as you way without logging out after the browser has closed.   • CMS and Databases vs. DIY

    I have been programming for many years now, primarily in PHP and the like and would consider myself an intermediate programmer. Some of my online projects have now gone global and very widely used, i am now in deep thought about scalability etc. All of my systems so far are written in PHP, no known database structure such as MySQL etc. Instead our databases use an 'operating system style' method of storing information, files and folders if you will. We also do not use any outside/third-party software or CMS, so far this has work out extremely well. Most people, when they hear about the way we do things, criticize and say that is an idiotic idea but normally after seeing our systems in more dept are converted to our way of doing things. Is it really that bad to not use a standard databasing systems and only using the one (slightly heavier than others) language of PHP? How well on the face of it will this kind of setup scale? N.B. Our systems include things such as account and user management, documentation development and task/project managing.
