  • Using Powershell to set user permissions in Reporting Services

    - by slugster
I'm asking this because i'm a n00b when it comes to Powershell. How do i use Powershell to add a particular domain user or group to a specific reporting role in SSRS2005 (say the Content Manager or Browser role)? Is there a simple one or two line script to achieve it? Thanks! Note: this is definately programming related (not server admin), but i am also going to ask this on SF.

  • Computer graphics research

    - by Shrey
What are the best known labs for research in CG especially raytracing/rendering? I want to pursue Masters/PhD in this field and though I have been working on projects such as raytracers, it is all self-driven. What would be a good place to start, perhaps as a research intern? Also, what kind of background is expected for admissions in these programs, in terms of programming skills, formal education etc.?

  • How to extend the Eclipse Java Editor to add coloured overlays

    - by Gavin Clarke
I have an idea for an Eclipse plugin which I've been toying with. I need to be able to extend the Eclipse Java Editor component and add coloured overlays to the code based on pluggable external metrics. Unfortunately there doesn't appear to be any kind of syntax highlighting extension point. Does anyone know how I might be able to extend the exisitng eclipse Java Editor to add custom highlighting rules? Bear in mind I'm new to Eclipse plugin programming so please give as much detail as possible.

I just can't find a clear answer on about WHAT TO REALLY TEST when programming unit tests. I just don't want to make unecessary tests and loose developement time doing overkill tests.

  • Most valuable course in the CS degree.

    - by danielrutledge
I was a math major and I took OOP and Algorithms & Data Structures from the CS department while in school, but didn't continue to any upper-division courses. What were the most valuable courses to your programming career (Operating systems, Compiler Design, Computer architecture, etc) in your CS degree? Alternatively, if you're like me and don't have one, are there any courses you wish you had taken? What would be the best way to fill in the gaps in my knowledge outside of school?

  • Trap error or 'Resume Next'

    - by Craig Johnston
I realise this is an older programming environment, but I have to clean up some VB6 code and I am finding that most of it uses: Resume Next What is the general consensus about the use of Resume Next? Surely, if there is an error, you would want the app to stop what it was doing, rollback any data changes, and inform the user of the error, rather than just resuming. When is it good idea to use Resume?

  • Windows 7 restarts while being idle

    - by Ondrej Slinták
My Windows 7 almost always restarts when I keep it idle for ~20-30mins. It happened randomly before, but lately, if I leave the computer I can be sure it's gonna restart after those 30mins. It never happens when I play games or work tho, just when it's idle. It's a fresh install of Windows 7 64bit. I had also problems while installing it, it always crashed while finalizing the install and I had to reinstall again. Eventually it installed on 3rd or 4th try after I deleted all of my partitions and added them again. I thought it might have been a hardware problem, but temperatures seem to be okay and I have no idea how to track what might have been causing it. Any ideas? I'm running Windows 7 64bit on: Gigabyte EX58-UD4P Intel(R) Core(TM) i7 CPU 920 @ 2.67GHz NVIDIA GeForce GTX 260 6GB of DDR3 1066Mhz RAM WDC WD1001FALS-00J7B0 1TB SATA II I have a very bad feeling it might be something with HDD and its compatibility with Windows 7 as I haven't had those problems for 1 year while I had Vista. Edit: I checked Event Viewer critical errors from this night. PC restarted first time at 11:12pm, then at 3:06am and since then every ~20min until I came back to it. Error message is: The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. This error could be caused if the system stopped responding, crashed, or lost power unexpectedly. Source: Kernel-Power

  • Are open source projects considered community service?

    - by Gio Borje
I'm currently a junior in high school and I've been slacking off on my community service to develop websites and do some personal projects in C#. Currently, I'm developing an web-based IM-Chat through node.js (the server-side Javascript). If I were to post this or other projects on Github or on Google Code, could this be considered community service?—to the programming community?

  • Implementing dynamic scope when using CPS as intermediate language

    - by asandroq
I am currently studying the implementation of programming languages and became interested in using Continuation-Passing Style as the intermediate language of the compiler. I also want to implement limited dynamic scope (for exception-handling or Scheme parameter objects) but I cannot find the relevant literature. I think it can be done with a separate environment passed as a variable to every closure, but this solution seems ugly to me. Could anyone point me to the relevant literature, or give me an idea of how this can be done?

  • Literature and Tutorials for Writing a Ray Tracer

    - by grrussel
I am interested in finding recommendations on books on writing a raytracer, simple and clear implementations of ray tracing that can be seen on the web, and online resources on introductory raytracing. Ideally, the approach would be incremental and tutorial in style, and explain both the programming techniques and underyling mathematics, starting from the basics.

  • Basis for claim that the number of bugs per line of code is constant regardless of the language used

    - by Matt R
I've heard people say (although I can't recall who in particular) that the number of bugs per line of code is roughly constant regardless of what language is used. What is the research that backs this up? Edited to add: I don't have access to it, but apparently the authors of this paper "asked the question whether the number of bugs per lines of code (LOC) is the same for programs written in different programming languages or not."

  • Object Oriented Database - why most of the companies do not use them

    - by GigaPr
Hi, I am pretty new to programming(just finished University). I have been thought in the last 4 years about Object Oriented development and the numerous advantages of this approach. My question is Isn't it easier to use a pure Object Oriented database in development applications? Why Object Oriented database are not as much diffuse as relational? From my point of view makes sense to use OO database, the latter will avoid the numerous construction necessary for the mapping of complex objects on the tables.

  • Removing the transparency from image while keeping the actual image

    - by KPL
Hello people, I have three images, and , they are not square or rectangular in shape. They are just like face of anyone. So, basically, my images are in the size 196x196 or anything like that, but complete square or rectangle with the face in the middle and transperant background in the rest of the portion. Now, I want to remove the transperant background too and just keep the faces. Don't know if this is possible and mind you, this isn't a programming question.

  • Experimental IDE concepts

    - by efbenson
I am interesting and building a new style IDE for a side project. Mainly to do away with the normal notepad on steroids IDE. I am looking for some inspiration for things that have been tried or that you have seen (or not) that looked cool and would be useful to have in an IDE. Things that I can up with are: http://digitaltools.node3000.com/blog/1052-field-experimental-programming-suite http://www.cs.brown.edu/people/acb/codebubbles_site.htm

  • Advice and resources for Apple iOS 4 development

    - by mlambie
I'm looking for resources, screencasts, books, courses, sites and the like to assist with learning Objective-C with the intention of developing applications for Apple's iOS 4. My development team has access to Apple's development program, and is largely coming from a similar background: they're Comp Sci graduates that have experience with Ruby and web languages, but haven't written any C since university. Considering Apple's announcement regarding limited programming language support for developers, what's the current best avenue for learning Objective-C with the desire for developing iPad and iPhone applications?

  • Win7 Ultimate 64bit not finding my SSD, any ideas?

    - by Jakub
So I am trying to install Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit on my new SSD (Kingston SNVP325-S2/64GB) and I have unplugged my other drives (for the install only). The SSD is detected by BIOS, I am running the latest Firmware for my motherboard P5N-E SLI (775 socket). Upon getting the Windows 7 install screen, it gives me a 'no drives detected'. I have tried Load Driver and downloding nForce drivers (latest for Win7 64bit signed WHQL) results in a message of (something like) "To continue please click Load Driver and load 32-bit and signed 64-bit drivers... blah blah" ... basically it does NOT accept my nForce SATA drivers, nor my 2ndary SATA drivers (JMicron? can't recall the exact name now). I have tried F8 at loading to 'disable driver signing' in hopes that it was an unsigned driver, however nothing works. The SSD is not detected by the Windos 7 installer. I wasted 4 hours on this last night, and gave up, and got nowhere. Anyone heard / ran into this issue before? How can I get the drive detected? Some more details: - Kingston SNVP325-S2/64GB V+ SSD - ASUS P5N-E SLI MOBO - 8GB RAM A-DATA (memory is checked out and fine)

  • Recording a screencast of an Android app using the emulator

    - by hgpc
Unlike the iPhone simulator, the Android emulator doesn't look like an Android device. If you have to create a screencast or promotional video of your Android application, the default skin of the emulator is no good. Is there any way to configure the emulator to look like an Android device? If you have dealt with this already, what other things do you recommend taking into account to record an emulator screencast? Not a programming question per se, but an useful question for Android developers.

  • golang closure variable scope

    - by waaadim
I'm reading 'CreateSpace An Introduction to Programming in Go 2012' and on page 86 I found this evil magic func makeEvenGenerator() func() uint { i := uint(0) return func() (ret uint) { ret = i i += 2 return } } // here's how it's called nextEven := makeEvenGenerator() fmt.Println(nextEven()) fmt.Println(nextEven()) fmt.Println(nextEven()) 1) Why is i not resetting ? 2) is nextEven() returning and uint or is Println so smart that it can work with everything ?
