  Foo has Title. Bar references Foo. I have a collection with Bars. I need a collection with Foo.Title. If i have 10 bars in collection, i'll call db 10 times. bars.Select(x=x.Foo.Title) At the moment this (using NHibernate Linq and i don't want to drop it) retrieves Bar collection. var q = from b in Session.Linq<Bar>() where ... select b; I read what Ayende says about this. Another related question. A bit of documentation. And another related blog post. Maybe this can help? What about this? Maybe MultiQuery is what i need? :/ But i still can't 'compile' this in proper solution. How to avoid select n+1?

If I comment that line in it will not compile. Am I missing something or should I not be using Visual Studio 2010 to compile C code. • How to use LINQ To Entities for filtering when many methods are not supported?

  Hi, I have a table in SQL database: ID Data Value 1 1 0.1 1 2 0.4 2 10 0.3 2 11 0.2 3 10 0.5 3 11 0.6 For each unique value in Data, I want to filter out the row with the largest ID. For example: In the table above, I want to filter out the third and fourth row because the fifth and sixth rows have the same Data values but their IDs (3) are larger (2 in the third and fourth row). I tried this in Linq to Entities: IQueryable<DerivedRate> test = ObjectContext.DerivedRates.OrderBy(d => d.Data).ThenBy(d => d.ID).SkipWhile((d, index) => (index == size - 1) || (d.ID != ObjectContext.DerivedRates.ElementAt(index + 1).ID)); Basically, I am sorting the list and removing the duplicates by checking if the next element has an identical ID. However, this doesn't work because SkipWhile(index) and ElementAt(index) aren't supported in Linq to Entities. I don't want to pull the entire gigantic table into an array before sorting it. Is there a way?

  when selecting a packet and choosing to follow the stream, wireshark automatically sets a filter that looks something like this: (ip.addr eq 10.2.3.8 and ip.addr eq 10.2.255.255) and (udp.port eq 999 and udp.port eq 899). i'd like to be able to set that myself when following the stream, but have not been able to identify where to do that. setting the display filter has no effect. in fact, after following the stream, whatever display filter is currently set will be replaced by the follow stream formatted filter. is customizing the follow stream filter even possible? thanks

  I have a registration form in which users can fill in two email address (email1 & email2). Marketing's requirement is that they need to be unique (unique as in if we had 10 users, then there would be 10*2=20 unique email address). The system is already built on cakephp, so what I'd like to know is, is there something similar to the isUnique feature (unique in one field) that can do this right out of the box? I can change any of the classes involved, just looking for an elegant way to do this. Ideally the hardware functions remain separated from the database and DataLogger functions. And ideally the DataLogger is reusable for other controls and measurements.

• Drupal install on remote mysql

  I am trying to install drupal on remote mysql server. I have created the user in mysql and granted the the privileges. I am able to connect through command line from my web server like this "mysql -u xxxx -h 10.xxx.yy.zz3 -p". But when I tried to install drupal I get "SQLSTATE[28000] [1045] Access denied for user 'xxxx'@'localhost'". I have given the privileges for "xxxx"@"10.xxx.yy.zz3" but drupal appends localhost instead of IP to user name. I have changed settings.php to mysql server IP. What am I missing?

  1) What is int? Is it any different from the struct System.Int32? I understand that the former is a C# alias (typedef or #define equivalant) for the CLR type System.Int32. Is this understanding correct? 2) When we say: IComparable x = 10; Is that like saying: IComparable x = new System.Int32(); But we can't new a struct, right? or in C like syntax: struct System.In32 *x; x=>someThing = 10; 3) What is String with a capitalized S? I see in Reflector that it is the sealed String class, which, of course, is a reference type, unlike the System.Int32 above, which is a value type. What is string, with an uncapitalized s, though? Is that also the C# alias for this class? Why can I not see the alias definitions in Reflector? 4) Try to follow me down this subtle train of thought, if you please. We know that a storage location of a particular type can only access properties and members on its interface. I know I'm not supposed to use int for such a large number, any suggestions on what I should use? if I replace int with double what should the '%d' part be replaced with then?

I need to get the element of Arr1 corresponding to maximum of elements in Arr2 beginning with given indices ... e.g Get indices of the max of Arr2 [ 1 , 10 , 3 , i , j ] for all i,j Return Arr1 [ 1 , 10 , 3 , i , j ] Of course I need the elegant solution (not the "loop for them" one...) Please Note: I do not want to loop through the arrays, because it is 11 dimensional!!.. the code will be ugly and error prone.. and I may run out of variable names :)

• Breaking up large DataGridView for printing

  Hey, I've got a single-row, 40 column-long DataGridView that i need to print. Since i can neither print it directly (because A4 sheets won't cut it ;)) nor adjust its width to the width of the page itself (because the headers look terrible), i wanted to break the DataGridView to 4 separate pieces and display 10 columns per row (imagine: column 1 to 10 in the first line, column 11 to 21 four or five lines below, etc...). Is there an easy way to do this? I was leaning towards a more manual approach (using fors), but i'd love to know if there's a more elegant way. Cheers

• Guilty of unsound programming

  I was reading Robert Rossney's entry on "What's the most unsound program you've had to maintain?" found at: (What's the most unsound program you've had to maintain?) when I realized that I had inadvertently developed a near-identical application! The app consists of an HTTPListener object that grabs incoming POST requests. Based on the information in the header, I pass the body of the request to SQL Server to perform the appropriate transaction. The requests look like: <InvoiceCreate Control="389> <Invoice> <CustomerNumber>5555</CustomerNumber> <Total>300.00</Total> <RushOrder>1</RushOrder> </Invoice> </InvoiceCreate> Once it's received by the HTTPListener object, I perform the required INSERT to the Invoice table using SQL Server's built-in XML handling functionality via a stored procedure: INSERT INTO Invoice (InvoiceNumber, CustomerNumber, Total, RushOrder) SELECT @NEW_INVOICE_NUMBER, @XML.value('(InvoiceCreate/Invoice/CustomerNumber)[1]', 'varchar(10)'), @XML.value('(InvoiceCreate/Invoice/Total)[1]', 'varchar(10)'), @XML.value('(InvoiceCreate/Invoice/Total)[1]', 'varchar(10)') I then use another SELECT statement in the same stored procedure to return the value of the new Invoice Number that was inserted into the Invoices table: SELECT @NEW_INVOICE_NUMBER FOR XML PATH 'InvoiceCreateAck' I then read the generated XML using a SQL data reader object in C# and use it as the response of the HTTPListener object. My issue is, I'm noticing that Robert is indeed correct. All of my application logic exists inside the stored procedure, so I find myself having to do a lot of error-checking (i.e. validating the customer number and invoicenumber values) inside the stored procedure. I'm still a midlevel developer, and as such, am looking to improve. Given the original post, and my current architecture, what could I have done differently to improve the application? Are there any patterns or best practices that I could refer to? What approach would you have taken? I'm open to any and all criticism, as I'd like to do my part to reduce the amount of "unsound programming" in the world.

• GDI+ Load a jpg and save as 24bit png problem

  Problem Hello all! I have this code which takes my jpg image loops through altering pixels and finally saving it as a png type. The problem is that the resulting image has a bit depth of 32 bits. • Taxonomy terms are not translated in an exposed filters block

  Hi, in my view's exposed filters block the taxonomy terms are showed only in the original language version (in English). Vocabulary is set to Localize terms. The terms are translated via Translation Table. All the other content (Views, nodes, translated strings etc.) is showed correctly (in German). I'd expect them to appear in current language, however.
