  Trying to migrate data from C: to D: via the SBS console is failing. The wizard starts running but drops out in the first few seconds. I'll post the full logs, but the important lines appear to be as follows: An exception of type 'Type: System.IO.FileNotFoundException, mscorlib, Version=2.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b77a5c561934e089' has occurred. Message: The system cannot find the file specified. • Set up linux box for secure local hosting a-z

  I am in the process of reinstalling the OS on a machine that will be used to host a couple of apps for our business. The apps will be local only; access from external clients will be via vpn only. The prior setup used a hosting control panel (Plesk) for most of the admin, and I was looking at using another similar piece of software for the reinstall - but I figured I should finally learn how it all works. I can do most of the things the software would do for me, but am unclear on the symbiosis of it all. This is all an attempt to further distance myself from the land of Configuration Programmer/Programmer, if at all possible. I can't find a full walkthrough anywhere for what I'm looking for, so I thought I'd put up this question, and if people can help me on the way I will edit this with the answers, and document my progress/pitfalls. Hopefully someday this will help someone down the line. The details: CentOS 5.5 x86_64 httpd: Apache/2.2.3 mysql: 5.0.77 (to be upgraded) php: 5.1 (to be upgraded) The requirements: SECURITY!! Secure file transfer Secure client access (SSL Certs and CA) Secure data storage Virtualhosts/multiple subdomains Local email would be nice, but not critical The Steps: Download latest CentOS DVD-iso (torrent worked great for me). Install CentOS: While going through the install, I checked the Server Components option thinking I was going to be using another Plesk-like admin. In hindsight, considering I've decided to try to go my own way, this probably wasn't the best idea. Basic config: Setup users, networking/ip address etc. Yum update/upgrade. Upgrade PHP/MySQL: To upgrade PHP and MySQL to the latest versions, I had to look to another repo outside CentOS. IUS looks great and I'm happy I found it! In this users' home directory, I created a folder called 'https'. This is where the documents for this site will live, so I need to add a virtualhost that will point to it. I tried browsing to it, and was met with permission denied errors. Turns out, I needed to chmod+x the https directory and its' parent directories. chmod +x /home chmod +x /home/dev chmod +x /home/dev/https This solved that problem. DNS I'm handling DNS via our local Windows Server 2003 box. However, the CentOS documentation for BIND can be found here: http://www.centos.org/docs/5/html/Deployment_Guide-en-US/ch-bind.html SSL To get SSL working, I changed the following in httpd.conf: NameVirtualHost 192.168.1.3:443 #make sure this line is in httpd.conf <VirtualHost 192.168.1.3:443> #change port to 443 ServerAdmin [email protected] DocumentRoot /home/dev/https ServerName dev.site.local ErrorLog /home/dev/logs/error_log TransferLog /home/dev/logs/access_log </VirtualHost> Unfortunately, I keep getting (Error code: ssl_error_rx_record_too_long) errors when trying to access a page with SSL. As JamesHannah gracefully pointed out below, I had not set up the locations of the certs in httpd.conf, and thusly was getting the page thrown at the broswer as the cert making the browser balk. So first, I needed to set up a CA and make certificate files. I found a great (if old) walkthrough on the process here: http://www.debian-administration.org/articles/284. Here are the relevant steps I took from that article: mkdir /home/CA cd /home/CA/ mkdir newcerts private echo '01' > serial touch index.txt #this and the above command are for the database that will keep track of certs Create an openssl.cnf file in the /home/CA/ dir and edit it per the walkthrough linked above. (For reference, my finished openssl.cnf file looked like this: http://pastebin.com/raw.php?i=hnZDij4T) openssl req -new -x509 -extensions v3_ca -keyout private/cakey.pem -out cacert.pem -days 3650 -config ./openssl.cnf #this creates the cacert.pem which gets distributed and imported to the browser(s) Modified openssl.cnf again per walkthrough instructions. openssl req -new -nodes -out dev.req.pem -config ./openssl.cnf #generates certificate request, and key.pem which I renamed dev.key.pem. Modified openssl.cnf again per walkthrough instructions. openssl ca -out dev.cert.pem -config ./openssl.cnf -infiles dev.req.pem #create and sign certificate. cp dev.cert.pem /home/dev/certs/cert.pem cp dev.key.pem /home/certs/key.pem I updated httpd.conf to reflect the certs and turn SSLEngine on: NameVirtualHost 192.168.1.3:443 <VirtualHost 192.168.1.3:443> ServerAdmin [email protected] DocumentRoot /home/dev/https SSLEngine on SSLCertificateFile /home/dev/certs/cert.pem SSLCertificateKeyFile /home/dev/certs/key.pem ServerName dev.site.local ErrorLog /home/dev/logs/error_log TransferLog /home/dev/logs/access_log </VirtualHost> Put the CA cert.pem in a web-accessible place, and downloaded/imported it into my browser. Now I can visit https://dev.site.local with no errors or warnings. And this is where I'm at. I will keep editing this as I make progress. Any tips on how to configure SSL email would be appreciated.

• XNA vs SlimDX for offscreen renderer

  Hello, I realise there are numerous questions on here asking about choosing between XNA and SlimDX, but these all relate to game programming. A little background: I have an application that renders scenes from XML descriptions. Currently I am using WPF 3D and this mostly works, except that WPF has no way to render scenes offscreen (i.e. on a server, without displaying them in a window), and also rendering to a bitmap causes WPF to fallback to software rendering. So I'm faced with having to write my own renderer. Here are the requirements: Mix of 3D and 2D elements. Relatively few elements per scene (tens of meshes, tens of 2D elements). Large scenes (up to 3000px square for print). Only a single frame will be rendered (i.e. FPS is not an issue). Opacity masks. Pixel shaders. Software fallback (servers may or may not have a decent gfx card). Possibility of being rendered offscreen. As you can see it's pretty simple stuff and WPF can manage it quite nicely except for the not-being-able-to-export-the-scene problem. In particular I don't need many of the things usually needed in game development. So bearing that in mind, would you choose XNA or SlimDX? The non-rendering portion of the code is already written in C#, so want to stick with that.

• Using Crypt function Python 3.3.2

I tried the following to resolve the issue for my Windows & Python 3.3.2 (though I'm sure the OS isn't the issue, the Python version or my use of syntax is the issue): Rename the directory in the Python33 directory from Lib to lib Rename the crypt.py in lib to _crypt.py. However, it turns out the entire crypt.py module depends on an external module called _crypt.py too. Browsed internet to download anything remotely appropriate to resemble _crypt.py It's not Python, right? It's me...(?) I'm using syntaxes to import and use external modules that are acceptable in 2.7.3, but not in 3.3.2. Or have I found a bug in 3.3.2?

• Using DirectX Effect11 with Visual Studio 2012

  I recently updated to Visual Studio 2012 Ultimate. I was programming previously with DirectX 11 June 2010 SDK and want to continue to do so using Visual Studio 2012. However, I discovered that VS2012 comes with its own DirectX SDK (in Windows Kit 8.0) and I've been trying to migrate my code using the newer versions of d3d11. Everything went fine until I try to use effect files in my project (.fx files). I had to compile the Effects11 Sample in the DirectX SDK using VS2012 and link the lib file in my project. That went fine too. However, when I compile my project the function D3DX11CreateEffectFromMemory returns a E_NOINTERFACE error (no such interface is supported). Can anyone tell me why is that? Note that I'm using the d3d11.lib from the Windows Kit and the d3dx11.lib from the DirectX SDK. Perhaps I shouldn't mix them? However, everything else works fine when I mix them, except for the effect file creation. Any help would be appreciated. P.S. I don't know if this is helpful but just so you know, if I add an additional library directory in the project settings of "DirectXSDKInstallPath\lib\x86\" it works. Why is that? Does it mean I'm using the older version of the libraries? This will give a ton of warnings about redefined headers in winerror.h

  I have a 64-bit version of llvm-gcc, but I want to be able to build both 32-bit and 64-bit binaries. Is there a flag for this? I tried passing -m32 (which works on the regular gcc), but I get an error message like this: [jay@andesite]$ llvm-gcc -m32 test.c -o test Warning: Generation of 64-bit code for a 32-bit processor requested.   I'm trying to write a rails application where users can upload images, but Paperclip doesn't seem to be working for me. I've found a few people successfully doing it in the past but Atlassian seems to have changed their WSDL since then to make the existing advice not entirely helpful. • Maven Multi-Module builds not honoring failsafe-maven-plugin?

  I recently discovered that Hudson was not the problem. In actuality it was Maven itself as the multi-module build was causing the build failure, not Hudson. I just hadn't noticed where the issue actually existed. Leaving the original question here. I'm using the failsafe-maven-plugin to run some integration tests. The difference between failsafe and surefire is that failsafe allows failures and does not fail the build. On my nightly builds there are occasions that a service the integration tests use might be down. In normal builds, the failsafe plugin would let the build continue since the integration tests are allowed to fail. However, Hudson does not seem to respect this and stops the build and produces rain. I tried to turn the failsafe tests off on nightly builds using -DskipITs. This appears to fail since I'm in a multi module build. Any ideas on how to get Maven to respect that these tests can fail even though they're part of a specific module? • How can I attach a Silverlight OOB to a Winforms panel?

  Summary: I want the prettiness of Silverlight/WPF in part of my current Winforms application. The application can only have access to the full .NET Framework 2.0, no more and no less. The only possibility I can think of is a Silverlight OOB application that utilizes Com+ Automation but I can't figure out how to attach the Silverlight application to a panel within the parent Winforms application. Details: I currently have a winforms application, and want to take advantage of the improved GUI features in WPF but to many of my users are still running .Net Framework 2.0 and refuse to update to 3+. So WPF is not an option for me. I know Silverlight is just a subset of WPF, but it has most of the features I'm looking for and only requires the Silverlight plug-in. I've read about Silverlight 4's Com+ Automation, which would give me access to the full desktop .Net Framework 2.0 (which I need). In order for Com+ Automation to work in Silverlight I need elevated trust and the only way I can find to gain elevated trust is to make my Silverlight application Out-Of-Browser (OOB). My problem is that the OOB application seems to run in its own container window and I need the Silverlight application embedded inside a panel in my Winforms application. My Winforms application does not need to communicate with the Silverlight application and vice-versa, this is purely to have everything contained and displayed in one window. If there is another way to get my desired result that I have not thought of feel free to suggest it.

• Possible to use multiple ServiceReference.ClientConfig files?

  I'm building a modular Silverlight application, using Prism. In the Shell project, I'm loading 2x modules, each hailing from a separate assembly. For convenience let's call them ModuleA and ModuleB ModuleA makes calls to WebServiceA. A ServiceReference.ClientConfig file is present in ModuleA's assembly. In order for this to work, in the shell project, I've added an "existing item" (path set to the forementioned config file in ModuleA's folder) as a link. The shell launched and the ModuleA made a successful call to the WebServiceA. Currently, I'm working on ModuleB, it also needs to make webservice calls, this time to WebServiceB. The service reference has been added, and a ServiceReference.ClientConfig file has appeared in ModuleB's assembly. I've attempted to add that config file as a link to the shell project as well, but I've failed. Q1 : Is it possible to use multiple ServiceReference.ClientConfig files like this? Q2 : Are there any best-practices for this case? Q3 : Is it possible to rename a *.config or *.ClientConfig file ? How is it done? How do I tell the application what file to use? Edit : Formatting

  I saw this question and recommendation from Django Projects here but still can't get this to work. My Django Admin pages are not displaying the CSS at all. • Why does Tfs2010 build my Wix project before anything else?

  Hi all, A similar question was asked and answered about a year ago, but was either a different issue (everything was in beta) or misdiagnosed. It's located here: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/688162/msbuild-task-fails-because-any-cpu-solution-is-built-out-of-order. My issue is that I have a wix installer project, and after upgrading to Tfs2010 on monday, the build fails on linking because it can't find the build product of the Wpf application in the project. After some digging, it's because it hasn't been built yet. Building in Vs2010 works as normal. The wix project is set to depend on the Wpf project, and when viewing Project Build Order in the IDE, everything looks as normal. The problem was originally encountered with only two platform definitions in the solution; x86 and x64. There are also two flavors, Debug and Release, and TFSBuild.proj is set to build all four combinations. There was no occurence of AnyCPU anywhere. Per the referenced question above, I tried changing the Wpf project to use AnyCPU so that it would be built first. At this point, the wix project used the exact configuration and the Wpf project used the flavor with AnyCPU. However, doing so didn't seem to change anything. I'm using the Tfs2010 RTM, Vs2010 RTM, and the most recent version of Wix, which at the time of this writing is 3.5.1602.0, from 2010-04-02. Anyone else running into this?

• Proper way to cleanup dynamic engines and can they be loaded twice?

  Hello - I am having problems loading Engine PKCS #11 as a dynamic engine using python and M2Crypto. I am trying to access an Aladdin USB eToken. Here are the important steps from my python code: dynamic = Engine.load_dynamic_engine("pkcs11", "/usr/local/ssl/lib/engines/engine_pkcs11.so") pkcs11 = Engine.Engine("pkcs11") pkcs11.ctrl_cmd_string("MODULE_PATH", "/usr/lib/libeTPkcs11.so") pkcs11.engine_init_custom() # initialize engine with custom M2Crypto patch # next few steps which I deleted pass password and grab key & cert off token Engine.cleanup() This works fine the first time this method gets run.
