• Hung JVM consuming 100% CPU

  We have a JAVA server running on Sun JRE 6u20 on Linux 32-bit (CentOS). We use the Server Hotspot with CMS collector with the following options (I've only provided the relevant ones): -Xmx896m -Xss128k -XX:NewSize=384M -XX:MaxPermSize=96m -XX:+UseParNewGC -XX:+UseConcMarkSweepGC Sometimes, after running for a while, the JVM seems to slip into a hung state, whereby even though we don't make any requests to the application, the CPU continues to spin at 100% (we have 8 logical CPUs, so it looks like only one CPU does the spinning). In this state the JVM doesn't respond to SIGHUP signals (kill -3) and we can't connect to it normally with jstack. We CAN connect with "jstack -F", but the output is dodgy (we can see lots of NullPointerExceptions from JStack apparently because it wasn't able to 'walk' some stacks). So the "jstack -F" output seems to be useless. We have checked the memory usage on the box, there seems to be enough memory available and the system is not swapping. Has anyone come across such a situation? Does it look like a JVM bug? UPDATE I've obtained some more information about this problem (it happened again on a server that has been running for more than 7 days). When the JVM entered the "hung" state it stayed like that for 2 hours until the server was manually restarted. We have obtained a core dump of the process and the gc log. We tried to get a heap dump as well, but "jmap" failed. We tried to use jmap -F but then only a 4Mb file was written before the program aborted with an exception (something about the a memory location not being accessible). So far I think the most interesting information comes from the gc log. The fact that the server stayed in the hung state for 2 hours (probably trying to GC and compact the old generation) seems quite strange to me. Also, the gc log stops suddenly with that message and nothing else gets printed any more, probably because the VM Thread gets into some sort of infinite loop (or something that takes 2+ hours).

• Connecting to a SQL Server Compact Edition (.sdf) from an MFC application

I'm building an MFC app in Visual Studio 2008 which classifies textures and I need some sort of lightweight database to hold the characteristics (just some doubles and strings) which can be: -carried around with the app on different computers; -be able to perform queries on it from the app (searches , updates ,inserts ,etc); Currently I'm looking into SQL compact edition because it was very easy to create from Visual Studio ( I also need only one table) but I having a hard time connecting and updating the db from C++.   Hello All, I am doing dynamic plotting using core plot library and i have placed that plot on UIScrollView so that i can scroll the plot. Now i want to do Pinch Zooming on that, means when i m doing pinch zooming that that part where i have pinched will be zoomed,other part will also be zoomed but we can see certain par of the graph at one time so wherever i have pinched that part will be shown in zoomed state in focused view and when i am doing scrolling i can see other part also in a zoom state. • Using an NSButtonCell with template image in a NSTableView

  In Interface Builder, I have set the dataCell of one of the columns of my NSTableView instance to be NSButtonCell. This works as expected, however, trying to use a ‘template’ image doesn't yield the expected visual result when clicking the button. How I configure the NSButtonCell: Image: NSRevealFreestandingTemplate Scaling: None Bezel: Bevel Type: Momentary Push In Bordered: false Expected result when clicking the button: Since the image is a ‘template’, the button should render its ‘on’ state. The background, ie the space surrounding the image, should not change. Actual result when clicking the button: No difference in the ‘state’ of the rendered image. The background color changes to white. Even-though I’ve tried my best to make the explanation of the problem as concise as possible, I’ve also made a simple screencast to visually illustrate the problem. And uploaded the demo app.

• UIButton: Need a circle hit area

  Ok I have 6 custom UIButtons. Their normal state image are all circles images. They are all spaced out equally but all the circles touch each other. The problem with the custom UIbutton (which has a circle image on it), is that the hit area of that button is square, and the corners of this square overlaps the hitarea of the other custom button's hitarea. How do i make the hit area of a UIbutton whos normal state has a circle image, be only clickable on that circle only, rather than the normal square hit area?! I can print a test page, which is processed/printed correctly. The next time printing is attempted (say printing a second test page), the page is not printed and the printer is set to disabled. • Decoding a GIF question

  For a personal project I'm creating a static gif decoder. Everything works well so far, except I'm having trouble understanding one concept from the specification: This block is REQUIRED for an image. Exactly one Image Descriptor must be present per image in the Data Stream. An unlimited number of images may be present per Data Stream. (Spec) Unlimited images per data stream? There can be more than 1? I'm assuming they don't mean an animated GIF because in the same specification they state, that they don't recommend gif's be used for animation. I've read a lot of other sites documenting the gif format and they all state something similar. Heres another link: There might be an unlimited number of images present in a GIF. Any ideas?

• TcpListener is queuing connections faster than I can clear them

  As I understand it, TcpListener will queue connections once you call Start(). Each time you call AcceptTcpClient (or BeginAcceptTcpClient), it will dequeue one item from the queue. If we load test our TcpListener app by sending 1,000 connections to it at once, the queue builds far faster than we can clear it, leading (eventually) to timeouts from the client because it didn't get a response because its connection was still in the queue. However, the server doesn't appear to be under much pressure, our app isn't consuming much CPU time and the other monitored resources on the machine aren't breaking a sweat. It feels like we're not running efficiently enough right now. We're calling BeginAcceptTcpListener and then immediately handing over to a ThreadPool thread to actually do the work, then calling BeginAcceptTcpClient again. The work involved doesn't seem to put any pressure on the machine, it's basically just a 3 second sleep followed by a dictionary lookup and then a 100 byte write to the TcpClient's stream. One idea we had was to call AcceptTcpClient and immediately Enqueue the TcpClient into one of multiple Queue<TcpClient> objects. That way, we could poll those queues on separate threads (one queue per thread), without running into monitors that might block the thread while waiting for other Dequeue operations. Each queue thread could then use ThreadPool.QueueUserWorkItem to have the work done in a ThreadPool thread and then move onto dequeuing the next TcpClient in its queue. Would you recommend this approach, or is our problem that we're using TcpListener and no amount of rapid dequeueing is going to fix that?

• Can SOTI's MobiControl software interfere with an ASP.Net web service?

  We have a set of WinMo (5.0) devices running a .NET CF application that talks to an ASP.Net web service running on a server. The devices connect to the network either via ActiveSync through a networked PC or directly to the network via an Ethernet dongle. In our development environment, the communication between devices and web service is 100% reliable. In our production environment, the communications are failing erratically and unpredictably. Sometimes calls to the web service (even to a simple test call that just returns a boolean) begin failing every time on a particular device, with the error message "Could not establish connection to network." This is usually fixed by flip-flopping the selected combo box values on the SETTINGS | NETWORKS screen. Sometimes calls on a particular device begin failing with a generic "WebException" message. The fix for this problem (so far) is either to reset the device (i.e. reinstall the OS) or else it just can't be fixed on some devices. To the best of our knowledge, everything about the DEV and PROD systems are the same (same server and device specs). The most obvious difference to us is that the PROD devices are all controlled by SOTI's MobiControl (which is server-side software that communicates with a SOTI client application installed on each device), whereas our DEV environment does not have SOTI installed anywhere (obviously we should have it there as well - long story). Does anybody have any experience with SOTI MobiControl and/or know of any documented problems where SOTI interferes with other communication mechanisms on a device?

  I'm using multicast UDP over localhost to implement a loose collection of cooperative programs running on a single machine. The following code works well on Mac OSX, Windows and linux. The flaw is that the code will receive UDP packets outside of the localhost network as well.   In DDD you should never let your entities enter an invalid state. That being said, how do you handle the validation of a unique constraint? The creation of an entity is not a real problem. But let say you have an entity that must have a unique name and there is a thousand instances of this entity type - they are not in memory but stored in a database. Now let say you want to rename an instance. You can't just use a setter... the object could enter an invalid state - you have to validate against the database. How do you handle this scenario in a web environment?

• Android View.onDraw() always has a clean Canvas

  I am trying to draw an animation. To do so I have extended View and overridden the onDraw() method. What I would expect is that each time onDraw() is called the canvas would be in teh state that I left it in and I could choose to clear it or just draw over parts of it (This is how it worked when I used a SurfaceView) but each time the canvas comes back already cleared. Is there a way that I can not have it cleared? Or maybe save the previous state into a Bitmap so I can just draw that Bitmap and then draw over top of it?

• WPF UC in Winforms occasionally has an odd border to the left / visually corrupted

  I have a WPF user control I created that is used to show the state of tasks in my UI. I get the odd report back that the control sometimes has a nasty looking border to the left and I cannot reproduce it. The control looks like this (when working) (grey tick=not run, green=OK,red cross=fail,hourglass=running); It looks like this when the problem occurs; It may have something to do with the layering of those icons, when the state changes the others are made invisible and the relevant icon is made visible. The four icons are all stacked on top of each other. It could also be the background in theory, which I'll look at next. Problem is reported on both flat panel and CRT displays. Any guidance greatly appreciated. Update: 1) SnapsToDevicePixels does not affect the issue. 2) Grid is not used, only a canvas.

  I have an client app that runs on several machines, and connects to a single SQL database. On the client app, the user has the possiblity to use a local SQL (CE) database or connect to a remote SQL database. There is also a box where a backup location can be set. For the backup of the remote SQL database I use the following code: var bdi = new BackupDeviceItem(backupFile, DeviceType.File); var backup = new Backup { Database = "AppDb", Initialize = true }; backup.Devices.Add(bdi); var server = new Server(connection); backup.SqlBackup(server); When developing my application, I wasn't aware that the given backupFile is written on the machine where the SQL server runs! And not on the client machine. What I want is "dump" all the data from my database to a local file. (Why? Because users may enter a network location in the "backup location" box, and backing up SQL immediately to a network location fails. So need to write local first and then copy to the network in that case.) I there an alternative to the method above?

Is there a more elegant idiom for checking that a set of environment variables is set?   Hi, I have written network class that is managing all network calls for my application. There are two methods showLoadingAnimationView and hideLoadingAnimationView that will show UIActivityIndicatorView in a view over my current viewcontroller with fade background. I am getting memory leaks somewhere on these two methods. [self hideLoadingAnimationView]; I am getting memory leaks when I call showLoadingAnimationView function. Anything wrong in the code or is there any better technique to show loading animation when we do network calls?

  Hi folks, I want to fetch data from the LinkedIn API for that I am using the Scribe library.All requests are giving me data as expected but when I tried two facet in the url then scribe is not able to get data from LinkedIn API.
