• Confirm that a dns zone is served by a nameserver

  We currently have a domain which has custom nameservers. Our host has their own nameservers. I'd like to switch our domain to use our host's nameservers for a while. Our host tells me that their nameservers hold a replica of our dns zone, but I'd like to confirm this before I switch. • Stitch scanned images using CLI

  I have scanned a newspaper article which was larger than the scanner glass. Each page was scanned twice: the top and the bottom parts, where the middle part appeared in both images. Is there a way to quickly match and stitch these scanned images, preferably using CLI? The panorama stitching tools I know require lengthy configuration, which is mostly irrelevant: lens size, focus, angle etc. Hugin has a solution for this issue, but it isn't practical for batch jobs.

  I'm lead dev for a large website which has a higher than average percentage of IE6 users - about 4.4% of our audience. Our new version is going to make use of progressive enhancement - including transitions and effects as well as rounded corners, gradients, web fonts and other CSS techniques. Obviously there are cross-browser ways to achieve most of these things which require various amounts of work to implement. What I'm currently looking into - and what I'd like your experiences of - is how to decide at what point we draw the line between providing an enhanced experience vs just supporting the functionality.   I recently reimaged my Lenovo t400 with Ubuntu. However, after wiping two other systems (Compaq Presario 2100 and Dell Latitude D600) both hUbuntu 11.10 and Ubuntu 12.04 fail to load on boot. I am concerned that there is some type of issue using Ubuntu on these older systems as every part of the process has been repeated/attempted several times in the same manner as practiced in the successful load of the newer Lenovo t400. I now have two laptops without an operating system as the discs/thumb drives that were formatted to load on these devices do not seem to work. • Video Bug after a fresh installation

  Hello, I just installed Ubuntu 10.10 (I'm brand new to Ubuntu) on my laptop. I seem to have a video bug that I don't know how to deal with. When the log-in screen comes up, the boxes are way off in the corner of the screen (partially off it). When I enter my password, the screen goes black for a few seconds, then returns to the login screen. I can open a Terminal window and enter my login info that way. When I go back to Gnome (Ctrl+Alt+F7 or whatever) it shows me as "logged in" but I still can't get to the desktop. If anyone has any advice, I'd love to hear it--just try to use simple language, please, since I really don't know Linux at all yet! I'm running an Averatec 3700 Series: Mobile AMD Sempron 3000+ 512 MB DDR, 80 GB HDD After looking at this question I tried going in through Failsafe mode (took me a while to figure out the hold-shift-while-booting thing _<) and playing around with the resolution. Setting a somewhat wider resolution did seem to fix things so that I can log into regular GNOME, I think. I'm not sure if this fix will persist, but it seems like it might!

• Why doesn't `stdin.read()` read entire buffer?

• VSS to TFS Migration - Persist User on check-in actions

  I am using the VSSConveter.exe tool to import from VSS6 (using 2005 ide) to TFS2008. I have run analyze (no errors) and migrate WITH a user mapping file (containg the vss/domain user mappings) I would like to persist in tfs the check-in user of the file, currently the check-in user for all versions of file shows as admin (the account im running the import with), the origional check-in user is appended to the check-in comment. For example:- TestFile.aspx in VSS Check in ver: 1 - User:Adam - Comment:TEST1 Check in ver: 2 - User:James - Comment:TEST2 Check in ver: 3 - User:Joel - Comment:TEST2 After import into TFS Check in ver: 1 - User:mydomain\Admin - Comment:TEST1 (Commited by Adam) Check in ver: 2 - User:mydomain\Admin - Comment:TEST2 (Commited by James) Check in ver: 3 - User:mydomain\Admin - Comment:TEST2 (Commited by Joel) In TFS I want the user to show as the correct domain user as configured in my user mapping file. Is this possible, or is this just how the VSSConverter program works?

Simple splitting won't do the trick: >>> a.split(" ") ['test', '', '', '', ... '', '', '', '', '', '', '', '', '', '', '', 'result'] split(DELIMITER, COUNT) cleared some unnecessary values: >>> a.split(" ",1) ['test', ' result'] This helped - but of course, I really need: ['test', 'result'] I can use split() followed by map + strip(), but I wondered if there is a more Pythonic way to do it. • Python: Why is IDLE so slow?

  Hi, IDLE is my favorite Python editor. It offers very nice and intuitive Python shell which is extremely useful for unit-testing and debugging, and a neat debugger. However, code executed under IDLE is insanely slow. By insanely I mean 3 orders of magnitude slow: bash time echo "for i in range(10000): print 'x'," | python Takes 0.052s, IDLE import datetime start=datetime.datetime.now() for i in range(10000): print 'x', end=datetime.datetime.now() print end-start Takes: >>> 0:01:44.853951 Which is roughly 2,000 times slower. • Encrypt text using a number

  Project Euler I have recently begun to solve some of the Project Euler riddles. I found the discussion forum in the site a bit frustrating (most of the discussions are closed and poorly-threaded), So I have decided to publish my Python solutions on launchpad for discussion. The problem is that it seems quite unethical to publish these solutions, as it would let other people gain reputation without doing the programming work, which the site deeply discourages. My Encryption problem I want to encrypt my answers so that only those who have already solved the riddles can see my code. The logical key would be the answer to the riddle, which is always numeric. In order to prevent brute-force attacks on my answers, I want to find an encryption algorithm that takes a significantly long time (few seconds) to run. Do you know any such algorithm? I would fancy a Python package, which I can attach to the code, over an external program that might have portability issues. Thanks, Adam

• BeautifulSoup: Get the contents of a specific table

  Hi, My local airport disgracefully blocks users without IE, and looks awful. I want to write a Python scripts that would get the contents of the Arrival and Departures pages every few minutes, and show them in a more readable manner. My tools of choice are mechanize for cheating the site to believe I use IE, and BeautifulSoup for parsing page to get the flights data table. Quite honestly, I got lost in the BeautifulSoup documentation, and can't understand how to get the table (whose title I know) from the entire document, and how to get a list of rows from that table. Any ideas? Adam
