• Adjust brightness and contrast?

  I have an acer aspire as5750. With the intel hd 3000 graphics. When i use the adjustment function keys the dial moves but it doesn't translate to the screen diming. Same with the dial in linux settings. Also in colour settings it seems there is no colour file or icc profile available for this laptop. Do you think if i can get a working icc profile then it will fix this or not? I have found something that could work:Argyll but it looks complicated to use, has anyone here used it? Would it allow me to dim? Or is there any other work around? I have searched lots but can't find a solution.

• HP Envy screen brightness .. stuck

  once in a while, the screen brightness stops responding to any reason, and stays on full brightness.. for those of you that have HP Envy, you know what this means... battery suicide. the FN+* controls don't work. i also tried going in to power settings and adjusting all modes brightness to low wend of spectrum, after saving, it has no effect.. i suppose i could try rebooting as i always just put my laptop to sleep :/ anyone came across this ?

• Brightness too dark or too bright

  Basically, below a seemingly-arbitrary threshold (seems to be around 60%) my laptop screen is too dark to really make out much, and above that threshold it takes its maximum brightness (which is waay too bright for my eyes). This problem only occurs when I change the brightness using Windows' UI. Changing the brightness using Fn keys on my keyboard works as expected; unless the screen went into dark mode because of Windows, in which case they have no effect. This problem started occuring on my ASUS laptop very recently. My laptop has a poor battery, but I don't think that's related. What is going on? I tried resetting power plan settings, turning off adaptive brightness and restarting. I'll give any info asked for. Help required urgently...

  I'm currently migrating to openbox without gnome session. In unity i can use the vendor keys to set the screen brightness, but in openbox I'm on my own. /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/brightness works fine, the problem is that I need sudo to set the brightness and that wouldn't work with keyboard mappings. xbacklight -get/set doesn't do or output anything. I don't really want to use xrandr --brightness. Are there any other options or a way to fix the problems with xbacklight or acpi_video0 ?

I can change it "programmatically" (FN + brightness key), though actual screen brightness shows no effect. I've tried this advice but it didn't work for me. I actually have no idea how it works (if hardware is not responsive to software, the way I see it), so can someone suggest a solution please?

  ISSUE: Backlight brightness does not change. More Detail: Brightness will not change, using both 'System Settings-Screen', or FN keys (Brightness bar shows and moves, but screen brightness does not change). Notcied a post in this thread (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1866283) about having multiple folders in Sys-Class-Backlight... I HAVE TWO FOLDERS TOO! 'intel_backlight' and 'acpi_video0' Using the function keys, alters the value in the acpi_video0's 'Brightness' file - But doesn't actually alter the brightness of the screen. If I add 'backlight=vendor' in Grub, my function keys then edit the value in the 'Intel_Backlight brightness file. - But again doesnt actually change the brightness of the screen. Computer: Fujitsu Siemans Pi2515, Intel Integrated Graphics, No hdd partition. Already Tried: -Editing grub to contain: acpi_osi=Linux acpi_backlight=vendor -http://ubuntuguide.net/change-screen-brightness-with-fn-key-in-ubuntu-11-0410-10 -sudo apt-get install acpi -$ sudo setpci -s 00:02.0 F4.B=20 -Brightness does not adjust in fallback mode either. -Reinstalling OS, Using Linux Mint (Same problem). -Upgrading and downgrading BIOS.   Hello, I have an Nvidia GeForce 6100 and using XP. I also have a SmartBoard. my brightness settings are completely changed and are not good. I tried changing the settings at the Nvidia GeForce 6100 nForce 430 color correction settings. I cannot get any ideal, it's just way to bright, what do i have to do? I already tried my monitor brightness settings and the smartboard brightness settings. it does not matter. I think there are problems with the pixels. How can i fix this?   This days, it seems that I either go worse with my eyes or some settings with contrast and brightness have been changed. However, I have been searching now for some tutorial on how to adjust contrast and brightness, and I have found already some, on how to use Microsoft Win7 Calibrate Display Color program, but some people don't recommend it.. My monitor control menu shows settings (which are by default) that contrast is set to 80, contrast to 90 and sharpnes to 45, for which I belive are pretty dam high. I'm usually every day in front of my PC about 6-10h. The biggest problem is, when the night comes, and I have to read some word document, after a 10-15m of reading, eyes starts hurting. I'm using ASUS VW198 and Nvidia 9800 GT graphic card. So please suggest me, what should I decrease, contrast or brightness or both?

• Windows 8 FN key doesn't work for brightness

  I have an Asus laptop with Windows 8 and fn+f5/fn+f6 keys (for brightness) doesn't work. In fact, they work, but they can increase/decrease the brightness only 1 time. I mean - after pressing fn+f5 once, nothing happens if I try to press fn+f5 again, before I press fn+f6. This only happens after logging in. At the login screen and during Windows boot I can adjust the brightness as I want, but after login I can't. I installed the latest ATK driver and NVIDIA graphics driver for Windows 8, and I think that my problem is related to conflict with drivers. I tried to reinstall/delete some drivers, but it didn't help. How can I detect where is the problem? Thanks.

  Hey all, I picked up an hp dm3t laptop with intel HD graphics and installed ubuntu 10.10 64 bit on it. It works great -- the only problem is that the brightness controls on the keyboard don't work. The brightness is always at full. When I try to adjust it down, the indicator graphic indicates that it's going down but the actual brightness doesn't change. Is there anything that I can try to make this work? I'd really appreciate any help. I asked this on superuser.com and someone commented that I should play around with the intel hd drivers. I'm a total noob -- how do I do that? What else can I try? I reallly don't want to do back to windows.

• Lenovo G580 Brightness Error caused by unsupported updates. How to revert?

  I just installed the 64-Bit version of Ubuntu 12.04 on my newly bought Lenovo G580. The brightness control was working properly using the Live CD and when I first started the installed version. Then I updated Ubuntu and restarted my laptop, and suddenly now, I can't change the brightness. I think its caused by some update. And then I went and checked my update settings, and saw that Unsupported Updates were enabled by default. So now I need to fix this brightness issue somehow. What should I do to locate the wrong update and remove it? I don't even mind removing all the updates right now. Thanks for the help. :)

• LCD problems: brightness / contrast blown out, can't bring up menu

  Yesterday, when I turned on my LCD monitor, the colors were very very bright. It looks as if someone had gone into the monitor on-screen-display and turned up brightness & contrast all the way to the max. Colors were washed out, and it's almost painful to look at. So I tried to go into the menu and see if the settings were wrong somehow...and I found that I cannot bring up the menu. All the buttons on the front of the monitor now do nothing, except the power button. I was able to go into my graphics card settings, and turn the brightness way down to compensate, so it's at least usable for now, but it's not quite right, there is definitely some loss of color resolution or something from the two extreme settings canceling each other out. Any ideas what kind of failure in the LCD might cause this? According to the control panel, the model number is: KL2490DW-D It's a 24" 1920x1200 with the brand "synaps".

  We have a desktop system running Ubuntu 8.04.4, and it is connected to a standard desktop LCD monitor. Unfortunately, in 8.04.4, the brightness of the image is cranked way up. It appears to be a graphics driver issue. Unfortunately, installing a newer GPU driver for this Intel GPU is very difficult to do. So, I am looking for a software (or config file?) solution to achieve this. Note: Ubuntu 9.10 and higher do not exhibit this issue, so this is not a hardware problem. Note: VNC-ing to this machine from another does not exhibit this issue either. Also, I installed "DisplayCalibrator.app", and it does not work very well (the app comes up, but the contents of the window are blank). Is there anything that I can add to the xorg.conf file to correct this issue?   When I use the brightness changing buttons Unity changes the brightness by two levels each time to create a nice effect. However, I only have about 10 different brightness settings and so this effect has caused a reduction in brightness settings to 5. I change my brightness regularly to suit the lighting in the room I'm in, but am unable to do this so effectively now that the number of levels has been reduced. Is there any way of turning off this brightness effect and controlling my brightness setting more sensitively? Thank you for your time. EDIT: It may not be 2 levels it changes at a time but 3, I've worked this out as the brightness control panel allows you to set the brightness accurately and there seem to be a couple of settings that the button misses completely when I change the brightness with the buttons.

• Why don't my Fn keys work for brightness or media after upgrading?

  I recently upgraded from 11.04 to 11.10. After the upgrade, I can no longer adjust the screen brightness or the volume using keyboard (before the upgrade, using Fn+F4, Fn+F11, etc. worked). Using Fn+F2 to disable wireless still works, so I guess the Fn key itself is being recognised. I tried to follow the instructions here, but I don't have a file in /etc/X11 called xorg.conf. I also tried following this workaround, but it had no noticeable effect. I've also tried going to Settings ? Keyboard ? Shortcuts and reassigning the brightness and volume controls, both to the default keys and to new combinations. These changes don't have an effect even after rebooting. Googling has found bug reports where pressing the media keys brings up a "no entry sign" rather than changing the volume. When I press the keys there's no response at all. I've also seen various people say a workaround is to have totem running in the background; this doesn't work for me either. Finally, I tried installing keytouch; I was able to install keytouch-editor but got the message "Unable to locate package keytouch". Any more ideas? I'd be very grateful if anyone could help me (even by pointing to a thread I've missed)!

  I use a desktop with multiple monitors I have tried F.lux and it is a great app for changing the color from 3500k-6500k... but doesn't adjust screen brightness. (I recommend you try it) I've googled for hours trying to find an app that will work to let me easily manage screen brightness either by a "dim when idle" or a dynamically updating screen brightness based on the time of day. Windows 7 desktop doesn't seem to have options for me to adjust brightness on the system, and manually changing three separate monitors is too much of a chore? Anybody have some recommendations? Perhaps a way to script this, knowledge of how to use the supposed dynamic screen brightness functions that Windows was supposed to add in Windows 7?

But when i use SetBright(0.0f), i cant change it back. I made a timer that runs for a minute with 0% brightness, then turns it back to 100%. Works when i use 10% for example. But when i turn it to 0% i cant seem to wake it up again. Any ideas how to solve this?

  I have Ubuntu 11.04 installed on a Lenovo Thinkpad T410 laptop with nVidia GT218 display controller. I am unable to adjust the display brightness. Pressing Fn-Home and Fn-End brings up the display brightness on-screen display and the indicated level increases or decreases as it should. But the actual display brightness does not change. Earlier I was able to Ctrl-Alt-F1 over to a text terminal and then do Fn-Home / Fn-End to successfully change the display brightness, and then Ctrl-Alt-F8 back to the Gnome session with the new brightness. But after upgrading to 11.04 the psuedoterminals have disappeared.
