  • Wrapping ASP.NET Client Callbacks

    Client Callbacks are probably the less known (and I dare say, less loved) of all the AJAX options in ASP.NET, which also include the UpdatePanel, Page Methods and Web Services. The reason for that, I believe, is it’s relative complexity: Get a reference to a JavaScript function; Dynamically register function that calls the above reference; Have a JavaScript handler call the registered function. However, it has some the nice advantage of being self-contained, that is, doesn’t need additional files, such as web services, JavaScript libraries, etc, or static methods declared on a page, or any kind of attributes. So, here’s what I want to do: Have a DOM element which exposes a method that is executed server side, passing it a string and returning a string; Have a server-side event that handles the client-side call; Have two client-side user-supplied callback functions for handling the success and error results. I’m going to develop a custom control without user interface that does the registration of the client JavaScript method as well as a server-side event that can be hooked by some handler on a page.     One of the most (IMHO) things with DropDownList is its inability to show an unselected value at load time, which is something that HTML does permit. I decided to change the DropDownList to add this behavior. All was needed was some JavaScript and reflection.   • tfs 2010 RC Agile Process template update New Task progress report

    Maybe my next post will just be about why I am so excited and impressed with the out of the box templates.  But, for this first blog with my new focus, I thought I would just walk through the process I went through to create a task progress report (to enhance the out of the box Agile template). So, I started with the MSF for Agile Development 5.0 RC template.  After reviewing the template, I came away pretty excited about many of the new reports.  I am especially excited about the reporting services reports.  The big advantage I see here is that these are querying the Warehouse directly instead of the Analysis Services Cube which means that they are much closer to real-time which I find very important for reports like Burndown and task status.  One report that I focused on right away was the User Story Progress Report.  An overview is shown below: This report is very useful, but a lot of our internal managers really prefer to manage at the task level and either dont have stories in TFS or would like to view this type of report for tasks in addition to the User Stories.  So, what did I do? Step 1: Download the Agile Template In VS 2010 RC, open Process Template Manager from Team->Team Project Collection Settings.  Download the MSF for Agile Development template to your local file system.  A project template is a folder of xml files.  There is a ProcessTemplate.xml in the root and then a bunch of directories for things like Work Item Definitions and Queries, Reports, Shared Documents and Source Control Settings.  Step 2: Copy the folder My plan here is to make a new template with all of my modifications.  You can also just enhance update the MSF template.  However, I think it is cleaner when you start making modifications to make your own template.  So, copy the folder and name it with your new template name. Step 3: Change Template Name Open ProcessTemplate.xml and change the <name> of the template. Step 4: Copy the rdl of the Report you want to use a starting point In my case, I copied Stories Progress.rdl and named the file Task Progress Breakdown.rdl.  I reviewed the requirements for the new report with some of the users here and came up with this plan.  Should show tasks and be expandable to show subtasks.  Should add Assigned To and Estimated Finish Date as 2 extra columns. Step 5: Walkthrough the existing report to understand how it works The main thing that I do here is try to get the sql to run in SQL Management Studio.  So, I can walkthrough the process of building up the data for the report. After analyzing this particular report I found a couple of very useful things.  One, this report is already built to display subtasks if I just flip the IncludeTasks flag to 1.  So, if you are using Stories and have tasks assigned to each story.  This might give you everything you want.  For my purposes, I did make that change to the Stories Progress report as I find it to be a more useful report to be able to see the tasks that comprise each story.  But, I still wanted a task only version with the additional fields. Step 6: Update the report definition I tend to work on rdl in visual studio directly as xml.  Especially when I am just altering an existing report, I find it easier than trying to deal with the BI Studio designer.  For my report I made the following changes.   • Android: preferences not being stored automatically

    I'm trying to use preference screen. I'm following all steps from online tutorial (once I couldn't get it working, I found other tutorials, and steps seem to be fine). I get to preferences screen, edit values, return to calling activity (via hardware return button). In DDMS perspective FileExplorer shows package_name_preferences.xml file with preferences that should be stored. It contains: <?xml version='1.0' encoding='utf-8' standalone='yes' ?> <map> <string name="false">kg</string> </map> while I expect (data line only shown). <string name="weight">kg</string> Also, if I go change only 1 preference, the same value changes, not a new row is created. I'm just tempted to write my own preference classes that would store data in files or DB, but I know that preferences should work, it just doesn't save properly my stuff. Edit Tutorials used: Main Tutorial - Was using this as a base, simplified, as I needed only 3 listPreferences so far. Does the EntityDataSource not support walking the relationships? How would you do this with the EntityDataSource? Also the @userName parameter is being added in the code behind for now. Extra points for anyone who knows how to specify a username parameter directly in the WhereParameters collection.

  • Storing Interface type in ASP.NET Profile

    In my ASP.NET website all calls into the data layer return entities as interfaces and the website does not need to know what the concrete type is. This works fine, but I have run into a problem when trying to store one of those types into the user Profile. My interface implements ISerializable, like the following: public interface IInsured : IPerson, IEntity, ISerializable and the concrete type in the datalayer does implement ISerializable. My Profile property in web.config is: <add name="ActiveInsured" type="FacadeInterfaces.IInsured" serializeAs="Binary" defaultValue="[null]"/> It compiles just fine, but I get a runtime error on Profile.Save() saying that the interface cannot be serialized. I have also tried it with serializeAs="Xml". I thought that if my interface implemented ISerializable it would work. Anybody had this problem before or know of a workaround?

  • How do I get an unexpanded REG_EXPAND_SZ string from a remote registry?

    I am currently using RegistryKey.GetValue(string name, object defaultValue, RegistryValueOptions options) with RegistryValueOptions.DoNotExpandEnvironmentNames for the options value. However, this is only valid when run on the local machine. Digging down via Reflector, I find it expands the strings locally. Which means that irrespective of the setting, the strings come down remotely already expanded. Has anyone come across a solution to this that does not require running a process directly on the remote machine to get a REG_EXPAND_SZ value? Update: I attempted to use WMI's StdRegProv provider to gain access, but it still expands the strings before sending them back.

    I know it's stupid but visual studio (2010) doesn't gray out my properties tagged with ReadOnlyAttribute, I can't edit their values (if I try to do it, simply return to the previous value), but they aren't grayed out, I think it's really boring this when using the editor Is there an option or an attribute that I'm forgetting?     0 I am trying to debug php CLI using Zend Studio. My problem: I can't get user input from keyboard. I tried in console, and everywhere, I chacked debug configuration (Allocate console = on) etc. HELP!

  • Design Time Attribute For CSS Class in ASP.net Custom Server Control

    Hopefully some Custom Control Designers/Builders can help I'm attempting to build my first custom control that is essential a client detail collection form. There are to be a series of elements to this form that require various styles applied to them. Ideally I'd like the VS 2005/2008 properties interface to be able to apply the CSSClass as it does at the control level, i.e. with a dropdown list of available CSS Clases. Take for example the Class to be applied to the legend tag /// <summary>Css Class for Legend</summary> [Category("Appearance")] [Browsable(true)] [DefaultValue("")] //I am at a loss as to what goes in [Editor] [Editor(System.Web.UI.CssStyleCollection), typeof(System.Drawing.Design.UITypeEditor))] public string LegendCSSClass { get { return _LegendCSSClass; } set { _LegendCSSClass = value; } } I have tried a couple of options, as you can see from above, without much luck. Hopefully there is something simple I am missing. I'd also be happy for references pertaining to the [Editor] attribute
