• DNS Records: Forwarding a port on my public domain

  I've set up an MX record for a local mailserver before, but I've never done this... I want to set up my public domain (registered by Dreamhost) to accept IPP (Internet Printing Protocol) jobs and send them to the IPP LaserJet printer on my home LAN. IPP uses port 631. What do I put in my DNS records?

  I got the following command with this error rsync -avz --links -O /home/jansiatest/.jenkins/workspace/svn_to_demo/trunk/CPS/ jansia@ps27670.dreamhost.com:/home/tasklite/temp sending incremental file list ./ rsync: failed to set permissions on "/home/tasklite/temp/.": Operation not permitted (1) But the thing is that i don't want to change permission of "/home/tasklite/temp/". How can i set that?

• Transferring Email to Google Apps - Timing

  I did a site for a client a few months back. Hosting & email was setup through Dreamhost VPS. Hosting has not been an issue, but email has become increasingly dodgy. Long story short, they want to transfer to Google Apps for Biz. They already have the mailboxes setup - they are on macs so they will be transferring using the gmail email importer for mac - my question is this - should they transfer their domain over first or their emails? I'm a developer so I have no problem changing their DNS settings, but I am not an IT manager type by any stretch so I am a bit in the dark about process - my proposed process was: Delete any junk/deleted mail from current environment Backup email locally copy emails to google apps via importer Switch domain and update mac mail settings It seems that doing the domain first would be best but I don't know if that is possible. I have been trying to find a generic checklist, but i haven't been able to.

• Is MediaTemple's (gs) really worth the hassle? [closed]

  I have been hosting my sites with Dreamhost for a while, and although none of them are high-trafic atm, I am going to a launch a Rails app this summer and a couple of other stuff, so I need a serious host. Since my plan ends in a couple of days, I have been looking at alternatives, and because MT has such a good reputation in the webdesign world, I have been seriously considering paying the ridiculous 20$/month for its shared hosting services. That was until I actually read some reviews of it, most of which indicated it is slow and overpriced. So now I'm wondering whether switching over to (gs) would really be a good idea, or if I would be better off paying less money for something like a Site5 or Hostgator shared hosting plan. What is your experience with MT, and particularly their Grid Service? Do you think I should even switch to (gs) in the first place, or should I choose something else from its competitors?

• Open Source Client-Based Project Management?

  For quite some time I've been searching for a web-based, open-source project management program that I can run on my rented space at Dreamhost to track client projects. dotProject seems nice, but I've never figured out how to create projects that only certain people can access. I'm usually working on two or three projects at a time for different clients, and would like to be able to allow access for each client to their project but not others. So, first of all, can anyone point me to how to do this in dotProject, and baring that, can anyone recommend an open-source solution to this problem?

• Web Host for Small Rails-based CMS site [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: How to find web hosting that meets my requirements? I am building a site for someone that uses a Rails-based content management system that I built myself. All of the Rails deployment experience I have so far has been over small intranets. I'm looking at web hosts like rackspace, because it seems like they're well-suited for Rails deployment. However, for a site that's not going to have more than a couple of hundred hits a month (if even that), I'm not sure it's necessary. I've also used Dreamhost's Phusion Passenger deployment for small projects before, but it seems barely functional and not well-supported, and I've also used Heroku for deployment, but I think a regular web host may do a little bit better, as they'll need things like Google Apps for Gmail set up. If anyone could provide some guidance on this, I'd greatly appreciate it. I get confused when I see things on rackspace like "1.5c/hour", because I'm not sure how that gets computed.

This question has a very specific objective of listing known web hosts that support this new SSL technology. If I'm not mistaken, multi-domain (not wildcard) SSL is a relatively new technology that is not hugely supported or well-known/advertised yet? I'm having a difficult time discovering which web hosts support the technology (again because it's not popular enough yet to advertise on feature lists). • Copying an SSH Public Key to a Server

  I'm attempting to setup a git repository on my Dreamhost web server by following the "Setup: For the Impatient" instructions here. I'm having difficulty setting up public key access to the server. After successfully creating my public key, I ran the following command: cat ~/.ssh/[MY KEY].pub | ssh [USER]@[MACHINE] "mkdir ~/.ssh; cat >> ~/.ssh/authorized_keys" ...replacing the appropriate placeholders with the correct values. Everything seemed to go through fine. The server asked for my password, and, as far as I can tell, executed the command. There is indeed a ~/.ssh/authorized_keys file on the server. The problem: When I try to SSH into the server, it still asks for my password. My understanding is that it shouldn't be asking for my password anymore. What am I missing?

I have 3 rails sites to launch, all of which are fairly small and consisting of a custom cms, one with an online store, and 2 sinatra sites which are mainly static, portfolio sites. What would be the best way to host these sites (I've deployed on dreamhost shared before and some vps's) Is it best to manage them together under one vps? e.g linode $20/m (for the cheapest option, 512mb and would that even be enough ram?) or keep each rails site separate and host each one on a small vps? e.g $4/m (there's often lots of deals like this on webhostingtalk) I'm currently hosting the sinatra sites for free on heroku but finding it a bit slow sometimes.

• Does rails do a rollback if I use begin...rescue?

  I'd like to add a begin...rescue block to one of my controllers create method, in order to log better info and construct the correct error message to return to the client. Does the rescue in any way 'interrupt' the rollback process? I'm assuming rails automatically does a rollback. When does it happen? Has it already happened by the time I get in the rescue clause? I'm using mySQL on Dreamhost and I think they use innoDB.

• Configure Courier IMAP to deliver mail to multiple hostnames

  I have a courier IMAP server running on a private server at dreamhost. The private server's hostname is psxxxx.dreamhostps.com. I also have CNAME for the private server, call it mydomain.com. I want to send email to [email protected] and have it delivered to [email protected]. Right now the Courer server on the private server is bouncing the mail. On other mail servers there is a file into which you put all of the names that the host responds to. The names are all synonyms for the host's name, so user@ are equivillent. How do I configure Courer to treat multiple hostnames as synonyms for its host name? Thank you.

• How can I move a load of zone records from a web based system to text based one?

  Hi there, I have a few domains with Dreamhost where I have set a load of records using their web based domain name system, and I've like to move them to another provider that lets me enter info directly as a text file for their name server, bind 9 to use. (If you're interested, I'm moving them to Gandi.net). Previously when I used a cpanel based system to do something similar, there was a tool that let me simply enter a domain name, and any available domains were automagically entered into a system, saving me typing it myself (and bringing down sites with silly typos in the process). What open source tool can I use to query a domain for all the relevant subdomains and records and list them in a format like a zone file, that I can use with other name servers?

• Why is APC (PHP Accelerator) Only caching apc.php?

  I installed PHP5,APC and XDEBUGGER with the install script found here: Dreamhost PHP+APC Install Instructions/Script All systems seem to be working... except... I added the apc.php to see the caching stats of APC (GUI Interface), and it showed that only apc.php file was being cached despite having installed wordpress and prestashop under the same domain, installing and running those php scripts. I wonder if I did something wrong... but my php5 is running as a cgi/fastcgi. I think I might have read somewhere about there being some issue with this. Not sure. Any help is of coursed appreciated.

• capistrano still asks for the 1st password even though I've set up an ssh key???

  Hi, Background: I've setup an ssh key to avoid having to use passwords with capistrano per http://www.picky-ricky.com/2009/01/ssh-keys-with-capistrano.html. A basic ssh to my server does work fine without asking for passwords. I'm using "dreamhost.com" for hosting. Issue - When I run 'cap deploy' I still get asked for the 1st password (even through the previous 2nd and 3rd password requests are now automated). It is the capistrano command that start with "git clone - q ssh:....." for which the password is being requested. Question - Is there something I've missed? How can I get "cap deploy" totally passwordless? Some excerts from config/deploy.rb are: set :use_sudo, false ssh_options[:keys] = [File.join(ENV["HOME"], ".ssh", "id_rsa")] default_run_options[:pty] = true thanks PS. • What is a good php 5.3.x shared hosting company?

  I am looking for the best shared host - features-wise, not price - for hosting CakePHP and Lithium applications. I would like to be able to use MongoDB / MySQL as well as have access to some of the more common PHP extensions like MCrypt, etc. I currently use dreamhost with a custom PHP 5.3.x build on my sandbox domain - Please do not suggest this as a solution.   Every now and then, often when I write a post on my Dreamhost DreamPress WordPress blog I get this Varnish related error: Error 503 Service Unavailable Service Unavailable Guru Meditation: XID: 180706672 Varnish cache server I did a related post here Varnish & ISPConfig under Debian give error 503 but they only tell me it could be an Apache Virtual Hosts issue and that the defined hosts should be checked. But that thread was on a different XID and just a comment, not an accepted solution. So perhaps this situation is different. Any ideas?

• Software to automate event notifications

  I maintain a small web site and people can send an email to request information about new events. I would like to automate the process of updating people about new events via email. Is there some easy existing software package to do this? Where I can configure events with a date/description/etc... and have mails get sent automatically? The alternative is to build a MySql database and have some python script in a cron job that does it. I'd like to know if this is a solved problem though. I'm running on a shared host (dreamhost if it matters)

• Is this way the best solution to read and save images from Rss Feeds?

  Hi, I've build a "RSS Feed Reader" module to my application, and for every post with images in the content, I get the first that matches a specific size and then I save for future use as reference to the posts. When processing, everything works properly except when more then 10 images are saved at the same time (This value is variable). I got an 404 error after a while saving the images. Some images are saved, but not all of them. If I run the app in my local server, everything work as expected (using set_timeout(0) to avoid timeout errors). Currently my application is hosted at dreamhost and I'm using Zend Framework. I'm not sure if the problem is specif for Zend Framework applications, so I didn't put any tags about. I've had this problem another time with other projects hosted at dreamhost. They seems to limitate memory for operations like that. • No such file to load bundler error for Rails 3

  I have a Rails 3 app ready for staging. I haven't got a VPS host set up yet. As I was planning to have everything on shared host for the first few months. Problem: cd myapp bundle check result: The Gemfile's dependencies are satisfied Passenger error: Error message: no such file to load -- bundler Exception class: LoadError Frustrating thing about shared hosts is that I have to add these lines on config.ru: ENV['GEM_HOME'] = '/home/username/.gems' ENV['GEM_PATH'] = '$GEM_HOME:/usr/lib/ruby/gems/1.8' Still no luck. Same no such file to load bundler error appears. Has anybody got this working? Rails 3, Debian, shared host (dreamhost)? I could just go ahead and register on Slicehost/Fivebean but before I do, I'd like to know why that error is showing up. Thanks.
