• How could this diagram of the current most lucrative technologies be improved?

  I'm giving a talk in April 2011 on the "Developer English" and showing my non-developer audience, mostly English teachers, various diagrams to explain how developers see their industry etc. One of these diagrams is "Hot Technologies", basically, if you want to become a developer, what technologies should you learn to have the highest chance of (1) getting a job (2) making a good salary, and (3) work with the most exciting technology. This is a draft I made just to get some ideas out, basically C#, PHP, Java are where the bulk of the jobs are. Mobile development has a big future. JavaScript is becoming more and more important, and I want to list "minor technologies" such a Python, Ruby on Rails to the side, I assume e.g. that in general, there are a much smaller percentage of jobs in these technologies as in C#, PHP, Java. How could this diagram be improved?

  A common complaint I hear about Facebook, Twitter, Ning and other social sites is that once a comment or post is made, it can't be edited. I think this goes against one of the key goals of user experience: giving the user agency, or the ability to control what he does in the software. Even on Stackexchange sites, you can only edit the comments for a certain amount of time. Is the inability for so many web apps to not allow users to edit their writing a technical shortcoming or a "feature by design"?

• How best do you represent a bi-directional sync in a REST api?

  Assuming a system where there's a Web Application with a resource, and a reference to a remote application with another similar resource, how do you represent a bi-directional sync action which synchronizes the 'local' resource with the 'remote' resource? Example: I have an API that represents a todo list. GET/POST/PUT/DELETE /todos/, etc. That API can reference remote TODO services. GET/POST/PUT/DELETE /todo_services/, etc. I can manipulate todos from the remote service through my API as a proxy via GET/POST/PUT/DELETE /todo_services/abc123/, etc. I want the ability to do a bi-directional sync between a local set of todos and the remote set of TODOS. In a rpc sort of way, one could do POST /todo_services/abc123/sync/ But, in the "verbs are bad" idea, is there a better way to represent this action?

• How to find history of shell commands since machine was created?

  I created an Ubuntu virtualbox machine a couple weeks ago and have been working on projects off and on in it since then. Now I would like to find the syntax of some commands I typed in the terminal a week ago, but I have opened and closed the terminal window and restarted the machine numerous times. How can I get the history command to go back to the first command I typed after I created the machine, or is there another place that all the commands are stored in Ubuntu?

• The best way to structure/design game code

  My question is quite broad and related to the 2D game code design/architecture/structure. Usually the main game consists of the main loop where you update & render your world states. However, it's recommended for many purposes to separate rendering from the game-logic and so on. I am kinda confused about the whole situation. Many game engines/libs/sdks don't follow separation schema. They propagate a way where you define some scenes/stages and they contain some objects and the scene/stage controls the user input and so on. For example, in cocos2d(-x) and libgdx (stage2d) the games are usually done the way that the update logic happens at the same time/place as rendering. Also, the propagated way is to have a structure where an object knows how to draw itself - which is not a separation of updating & rendering. The same with Flash based games, they are usually done the way when an object (class) contains a swf or a texture and some data and holds some update logic itself, or updated from main Scene. And again this object already knows how to draw itself via "addChild". Also, some people recommend to use MVC pattern, which will require to completely obey the structure of those engines/libs/sdks. Maybe I am overthinking everything, but I am totally confused. I would be grateful if somebody could point me to a correct direction with the game code structures. What is your way of doing things in libgdx/cocos2d/flash?

  We have a landing page which is used only for running an ad campaign. There is a website that has found this link somehow and is linking to it. I've been told by marketing they don't want that website linking to the landing page. How can I prevent a specific website from linking to our domain? I don't want to block all websites from linking to it, just this specific one. Is there solution something to do with .htaccess? If so, please provide an example of doing this or a link to example because I've been unable to find one.

• Resolution changes when using switch

  So, the "real" resolution of my monitor is 1024x768. That's what I'd use on my docked Windows laptop, and what I'd use on my Xubuntu desktop connected directly. When I connect a switch, to switch between the two, however, the ubuntu machine's resolution changes. Everything's still proportional, and it still thinks it's doing 1024x768, but the icons and fonts appear larger. Not 800x600 larger, but still big. When I used Xubuntu Precise, I created an xorg.conf file to set a resolution of 1280x1024 which made it look the way it does without the switch ... as a workaround. When I upgraded to Trusty, I lost this. I tried to re-create it, but doesn't seem to load my file. Ideally, I'd like to correct the original problem, but I'd settle for being able to up the resolution. I searched for a while, and tried to do it, but I'm giving up ... please help me out.   I'm using Ubuntu 9.1 server edition, I get this error during boot time after I ran sudo apt-get upgrade when checking my kernel version, uname -r returns 2.6.31-14-generic but when i run dpkg -l 'linux-image*' | grep ^.i I cannot find 2.6.31-14 (only contains 2.6.32*) Following the solution in the thread: Kernel Panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(0,0) doesn't work for me I'm running the commands inside the Rescue mode by booting from the Ubuntu 9.1 Installation Disc Do I need to update my kernel and run update-initramfs + update-grub again? If so, how can I update the kernel? apt-get install any linux-headers/image cannot change the uname -r value Thanks!

• How to determine direction of navigation from IE WebBrowser (IHtmlWindow2 or Javascript)

  I'm uisng the WPF Web Browser control and when it fires the Navigating event, the event args always contain NavigationMode.New. It should be set to NavigationMode.Back if the user chooses to 'Go Back' from the web control. So its off to the COM ActiveX control underneath to determine the direction of navigation. I've been looking at IHtmlWindow2 and IHtmlDocument2 and IOmHistory, but don't see anything that happens on navigation to tell me if the navigation is caused by going back, forward, a new address, or a refresh. Since IHtmlWindow and Javascript have the same DOM, maybe someone knows how from Javascript. I've also been looking at the IWebBrowser2 interface, but can't find anything there either. Is there an event or property I need to inspect?

  I'm downloading a 10MB zipped XML file with wget, unzipping it to 40MB, trying to weed out test and expired entries (if the text of a certain node is "This is a test opportunity. • Creating a RESTful API - HELP!

  Hi Chaps Over the last few weeks I've been learning about iOS development, which has naturally led me into the world of APIs. Now, searching around on the Internet, I've come to the conclusion that using the REST architecture is very much recommended - due to it's supposed simplicity and ease of implementation. However, I'm really struggling with the implementation side of REST. I understand the concept; using HTTP methods as verbs to describe the action of a request and responding with suitable response codes, and so on. It's just, I don't understand how to code it. I don't get how I map a URI to an object. I understand that a GET request for domain.com/api/user/address?user_id=999 would return the address of user 999 - but I don't understand where or how that mapping from /user/address to some method that queries a database has taken place. Is this all coded in one php script? Would I just have a method that grabs the URI like so: $array = explode("/", ltrim(rtrim($_SERVER['REQUEST_URI'], "/"), "/")) And then cycle through that array, first I would have a request for a "user", so the PHP script would direct my request to the user object and then invoke the address method. Is that what actually happens? I've probably not explained my thought process very well there. The main thing I'm not getting is how that URI /user/address?id=999 somehow is broken down and executed - does it actually resolve to code? class user(id) { address() { //get user address } } I doubt I'm making sense now, so I'll call it a day trying to explain further.   All, I am not very good at explaining so i will let my comments do it! #this script is to calculate some of the times table up to 24X24 and also miss some out #Range of numbers to be calculated numbers=range(1,25) for i in numbers: for w in numbers: print(str(i)+"X"+str(w)+"="+str(i*w)) #here i want to break randomly (skip some out) e.g. i could be doing the 12X1,12X2 and then 12X5 i have no limit of skips. Update Sorry if this is not clear i want it to break from the inner loop for a random amount of times

• How to put a pre-existing sqlite file into <Application_Home>/Library/?

  My app uses Core Data. I have run the app in the simulator which has successfully created and populated the corresponding sqlite file. I now want to get this pre-existing sqlite file on to an actual device and be part of my app. I have located the simulator generated sqlite file at /Library/Application Support/iPhone Simulator/6.0/Applications/identifier/Documents/myapp.sqlite and dragged it into Xcode. This has added it to my application bundle but not in an appropriate directory (with the consequence that the sqlite file can be read but not written to). From reading about the file system I believe that the best place to put the sqlite file would be in a custom directory 'Database' under Application_Home/Library/. I don't seem to be able to do this within Xcode and despite searching I am unable to figure out how to do the following: (1) Create a sub-directory called 'Database' in Application_Home/Library/ ? (2) Transfer the sqlite file to my newly created 'Database' directory ? Many thanks to @Daij-Djan of his answer below. One other question: the path to the sqlite file will be used by the persistent store coordinator. Now depending on the size of the sqlite file it may take a while to copy or move. How can you ensure that the example code provided by @Daij-Djan has executed and finished before the persistent store coordinator tries to reference the sqlite file? Thanks for any help in advance.
