• Big Data – Final Wrap and What Next – Day 21 of 21

- by Pinal Dave
In yesterday’s blog post we explored various resources related to learning Big Data and in this blog post we will wrap up this 21 day series on Big Data. I have been exploring various terms and technology related to Big Data this entire month. It was indeed fun to write about Big Data in 21 days but the subject of Big Data is much bigger and larger than someone can cover it in 21 days. My first goal was to write about the basics and I think we have got that one covered pretty well. During this 21 days I have received many questions and answers related to Big Data. I have covered a few of the questions in this series and a few more I will be covering in the next coming months. Now after understanding Big Data basics. I am personally going to do a list of the things next. I thought I will share the same with you as this will give you a good idea how to continue the journey of the Big Data. Build a schedule to read various Apache documentations Watch all Pluralsight Courses Explore HortonWorks Sandbox Start building presentation about Big Data – this is a great way to learn something new Present in User Groups Meetings on Big Data Topics Write more blog posts about Big Data I am going to continue learning about Big Data – I want you to continue learning Big Data. Please leave a comment how you are going to continue learning about Big Data. I will publish all the informative comments on this blog with due credit. I want to end this series with the infographic by UMUC. • Apress Books - 3 - Pro ASP.NET 4 CMS (ISBN 987-1-4302-2712-0) - Final comments

- by TATWORTH
This book is more than just a book about an ASP.NET CMS system - it has much practical advice and examples for the Dot Net web developer. I liked the use of JQuery to detect that JavaScript was not enabled. One chapter was about MemCached - this one chapter could justify the price of the book if you run a server farm and need to improve performance. Some links to get you started are: Windows Memcache at http://code.jellycan.com/memcached/ Dot Net Access Library at http://sourceforge.net/projects/memcacheddotnet/ The chapters on scripting, performance analysis and search engne optimisation all provide excellent examples. This certainly is a book that should be part of every Dot Net Web Development team library. Congratulations to the author and to Apress for publishing this book!

• Get Final output from UDK

- by EmAdpres
( sorry for my bad english in advance :D ) I'm trying to get a .exe setup output, from my UDK !( with my own maps and scripts which I made within MyGame) I tried UnrealFrontEnd! But It made a setup , that after installation I can see my .udk maps, my packages and etc. But It's not a real output that I can show to my customers. I don't want, other can use my resources ! So... How can I get a binary-like output from UDK as a real Game-Output ? ( like what we see in all commercial games ) Is there any option in frontend that I missed ?

• Final steps in installing Matlab2012 on Ubuntu 12.04

- by Mattia
I have a problem with the MATLAB 2012 installation. After having installed it using alt+f2 and having used gksudo nautilus I have installed MATLAB in the correct folder which is: /usr/local/MATLAB/R2012a Then I inserted the license and the window told "activation complete" or something like that. This made me happy, but only for a while because as soon as I try to search for Matlab within the applications I cannot find it and neither if I try to run matlab into terminal it says: command not found Can someone help me!? Tanks in advance!

• Perl - Compare two files and copy intire line to final.log

- by user2977141
I need perl script to compare line from file1 with file2 and copy to final file, something like this: File1.txt: ASPO01 ASPO02 ASPO03 File2.txt: ASPO01 2013-11-10 19hrs ASPO10 2013-11-09 24hrs ASPO02 2013-11-08 10hrs ASPO16 2013-11-05 9hrs ASPO17 2013-11-06 6hrs ASPO03 2013-11-07 15hrs ASPO18 2013-11-02 25hrs ... Search into File2 and copy to final file called final.log, like this: final.txt: ASPO01 2013-11-10 19hrs ASPO02 2013-11-08 10hrs ASPO03 2013-11-07 15hrs Thanks for all good friends can help me!!!

• Scala and the Java Memory Model

- by Ben Lings
The Java Memory Model (since 1.5) treats final fields differently to non-final fields. In particular, provided the this reference doesn't escape during construction, writes to final fields in the constructor are guaranteed to be visible on other threads even if the object is made available to the other thread via a data race. (Writes to non-final fields aren't guaranteed to be visible, so if you improperly publish them, another thread could see them in a partially constructed state.) Is there any documentation on how/if the Scala compiler creates final (rather than non-final) backing fields for classes? I've looked through the language specification and searched the web but can't find any definitive answers. (In comparison the @scala.volatile annotation is documented to mark a field as volatile)

• Java: design problem with final-value and empty constructor

- by HH
$ javac InitInt.java InitInt.java:7: variable right might not have been initialized InitInt(){} ^ 1 error $ cat InitInt.java import java.util.*; import java.io.*; public class InitInt { private final int right; // Design Problem? // I feel the initialization problem is just due to bad style. InitInt(){} InitInt{ // Still the error, "may not be initialized" // How to initialise it? if(snippetBuilder.length()>(charwisePos+25)){ right=charwisePos+25; }else{ right=snippetBuilder.length()-1; } } public static void main(String[] args) { InitInt test = new InitInt(); System.out.println(test.getRight()); } public int getRight(){return right;} } Partial Solutions and Suggestions use "this" to access methods in the class, instead of creating empty constructor change final to non-final with final field value: initialize all final values in every constructor remove the empty constructor, keep your code simple and clean

• In ArrayBlockingQueue, why copy final member field into local final variable?

- by mjlee
In ArrayBlockingQueue, any method that requires lock will get set 'final' local variable before calling 'lock()'. public boolean offer(E e) { if (e == null) throw new NullPointerException(); final ReentrantLock lock = this.lock; lock.lock(); try { if (count == items.length) return false; else { insert(e); return true; } } finally { lock.unlock(); } } Is there any reason to set a local variable 'lock' from 'this.lock' when field 'this.lock' is final also. Additionally, it also set local variable of E[] before acting on. private E extract() { final E[] items = this.items; E x = items[takeIndex]; items[takeIndex] = null; takeIndex = inc(takeIndex); --count; notFull.signal(); return x; } Is there any reason for copying to local final variable?

- by Xarem
If I try to install the Windows 8 RTM Final (from MSDN) on my Macbook Air Mid 2011 using Boot Camp, I get this error: Windows cannot be installed to this disk. This computer's hardware may not support booting to this disk. Ensure that the disk's controller is enabled in the computer's BIOS menu I already formatted the disk with NTFS, removed it, reformatted and more... Does anyone know to resolve this error? Thank you very much

• Java: Initializing a public static field in superclass that needs a different value in every subclas

- by BinaryMuse
Good evening, I am developing a set of Java classes so that a container class Box contains a List of a contained class Widget. A Widget needs to be able to specify relationships with other Widgets. I figured a good way to do this would be to do something like this: public abstract class Widget { public static class WidgetID { // implementation stolen from Google's GWT private static int nextHashCode; private final int index; public WidgetID() { index = ++nextHashCode; } public final int hashCode() { return index; } } public abstract WidgetID getWidgetID(); } so sublcasses of Widget could: public class BlueWidget extends Widget { public static final WidgetID WIDGETID = new WidgetID(); @Override public WidgetID getWidgetID() { return WIDGETID; } } Now, BlueWidget can do getBox().addWidgetRelationship(RelationshipTypes.SomeType, RedWidget.WIDGETID, and Box can iterate through it's list comparing the second parameter to iter.next().getWidgetID(). Now, all this works great so far. What I'm trying to do is keep from having to declare the public static final WidgetID WIDGETID in all the subclasses and implement it instead in the parent Widget class. The problem is, if I move that line of code into Widget, then every instance of a subclass of Widget appears to get the same static final WidgetID for their Subclassname.WIDGETID. However, making it non-static means I can no longer even call Subclassname.WIDGETID. So: how do I create a static WidgetID in the parent Widget class while ensuring it is different for every instance of Widget and subclasses of Widget? Or am I using the wrong tool for the job here? Thanks!

• Persistence provider for Java that supports final fields

- by naeron84
I'm very new to Java but I've been developing a habit to use final wherever possible declaring immutability which i think is a good thing. (Consider f#) I've read that JPA does not support final fields. Hibernate, TopLink? I'm not sure about these but i prefer JPA for now. Is that even possible theoretically - let's say through reflection - to modify final fields after creation? My guess would be... NO :) What would be certainly possible for a persistence solution is to support constructors with parameters. At least i see no reason that would make this impossible. Mapping would be a little tricky i guess. This is an alternative solution. Suggestions?

• Spring - using static final fields (constants) for bean initialization

- by lisak
Hey, is it possible to define a bean with the use of static final fields of CoreProtocolPNames class like this: <bean id="httpParamBean" class="org.apache.http.params.HttpProtocolParamBean"> <constructor-arg ref="httpParams"/> <property name="httpElementCharset" value="CoreProtocolPNames.HTTP_ELEMENT_CHARSET" /> <property name="version" value="CoreProtocolPNames.PROTOCOL_VERSION"> </bean> public interface CoreProtocolPNames { public static final String PROTOCOL_VERSION = "http.protocol.version"; public static final String HTTP_ELEMENT_CHARSET = "http.protocol.element-charset"; } If it is possible, what is the best way of doing this ?

• Referring to a non-final variable data inside an inner class

- by shoaibmohammed
Im doing a program in GWT. Here is the snippet where Im having problem private String[] populateRSSData() { 1==>> String[] data = null; try { new RequestBuilder(RequestBuilder.GET, "../database.php?action=populaterss").sendRequest(null, new RequestCallback() { @Override public void onResponseReceived(Request request, Response response) { 2==>> data=response.getText().split("~"); } @Override public void onError(Request request, Throwable exception) { Window.alert(exception.getMessage()); } }); } catch (RequestException e) { Window.alert(e.getMessage()); } return data; } Now the problem arises that I get an error that the variable 1==>> data should be declared final. But if I declare it as final then i cannot store the datas in 2==>> The error i get Cannot refer to a non-final variable data inside an inner class defined in a different method RSS_Manager.java Please suggest

• Problem with final branch in a parallel activity

- by Dan Revell
This might seem like a silly thing to say, the final branch in a parallel activity so I'll clarify. It's a parallel activity with three branches each containing a simple create task, on task changed and complete task. The branch containing the task that is last to complete seems to break. So every task works in it's own right, but the last one encounters a problem. Say the user clicks the final tasks link to open the attached infopath form and submits that. Execution gets to the event handler for that onTaskChanged where a taskCompleted variable gets set to true which will exit the while loop. I've successfully hit a breakpoint on this line so I know that happens. However the final activity in that branch, the completeTask doesn't get hit. When submit is clicked in the final form, the operation in progess screen says of for quite a while before returning to the workflow status page. The task that was opened and submitted says "Not Started". I can disable any of the branches to leave only two, but the same problem happens with the last to be completed. Earlier on in the workflow I do essencially the same thing. I have another 3 branch parallel activity with each brach containing a task. This one works correctly which leads me to believe that it might be a problem with having two parallel activites in the same sequential workflow. I've considered the possibility that it might be a correlation token problem. The token that every task branch uses is unique to that branch and it's owner activity name is est to that of the branch. It stands to reason that if the task complete variable is indeed getting set to true but the while loop isn't being exited, then there's a wire crossing with the variable somewhere. However I'd still have thought that the task status back on the workflow status page would at least say that the task is in progress. This is a frustrating show stopper of a bug for me. Any thoughts or suggestions would be much appricated so I can investigate them.

• final fields and thread-safety

- by pcjuzer
Should it be all fields, including super-fields, of a purposively immutable java class 'final' in order to be thread-safe or is it enough to have no modifier methods? Suppose I have a POJO with non-final fields where all fields are type of some immutable class. This POJO has getters-setters, and a constructor wich sets some initial value. If I extend this POJO with knocking out modifier methods, thus making it immutable, will extension class be thread-safe?

• Xpages conditional validation: make a field required only if report is being submitted as final

- by Randal Oulton
Doing server-side Xpages conditional validation.... I want the follow validation to kick in only if the Report.Status field = 'Final'. (The users are allowed to submit the report as draft and come back and finish it later, when they submit as draft we don't want to make the fields required.) How would I go about this? <xp:inputTextarea style="width:75%" value="#{Report.Agenda}" id="Agenda"> <xp:this.validators> <xp:validateRequired message="Question 1 can't be blank"> </xp:validateRequired><!-- (1) --> </xp:this.validators> </xp:inputTextarea> Tried this, didn't work, was still required even if Status field not set to final :{ <xp:inputTextarea style="width:75%" value="#{Report.Agenda}" id="Agenda" defaultValue="5 year agenda"> <xp:this.validators> <xp:validateRequired message="Question 1 can't be blank"></xp:validateRequired><!-- (1) --> <xp:validateExpression message="Question 1 can't be blank"> <xp:this.expression><![CDATA[#{javascript: if (Report.getItemValueString('Status')!='Final') { return true; } else { return false; } }]]></xp:this.expression> </xp:validateExpression> </xp:this.validators> </xp:inputTextarea>

• Groovy 1.7 changes "final"?

- by Aaron L. Carlow
Just started learning Groovy, got the PragProg book "Programming Groovy" and had a problem compiling one of the sample scripts: class GCar2 { final miles = 0 def getMiles() { println "getMiles called" miles } def drive(dist) { if (dist > 0) { miles += dist } } } def car = new GCar2() println "Miles: $car.miles" println 'Driving' car.drive(10) println "Miles: $car.miles" try { print 'Can I see the miles? ' car.miles = 12 } catch (groovy.lang.ReadOnlyPropertyException ex) { println ex.message GroovyCar2.groovy: 20: cannnot access final field or property outside of constructor. @ line 20, column 35. def drive(dist) { if (dist > 0) miles += dist } ^ Groovy versions prior to 1.7 do not give an error. I looked through whatever documentation I could find and did not see the issue discussed. What is going on here? Aaron
