• Unable to Install GRUB in /dev/sda

  I'm trying to install 12.04LTS on a server but keep running into the unable to install grub error like so "Unable to Install GRUB in /dev/sda". The drives are in raid1 and I'm using fakeraid on a supermicro motherboard, which according to the manual is fully supported. I've tried installing both from USB and CD-R but still no luck. I'm not dual booting with any other OS, just using 2x320gb drives and have been choosing to install using the entire disk. Any ideas what I'm doing wrong or can do to fix this? thanks

• In launcher, disable the music suggestion section

  Everytime I want to launch an office program, I begin typing "of" in the launcher, and... pictures of lightly-clothed ladies show up. Not the end of the world, but because I do this a lot in front of customers and bosses, it is often embarrassing. I have already disabled Zeitgeist and "recently used". Banshee does not have any Zeitgeist item in Edit > Preferences > Extensions. Is there a way to disable this "Music" section in the launcher suggestions? Or maybe I just must stop playing dance music via Banshee...

• Why should a class be anything other than "abstract" or "final/sealed"

  After 10+ years of java/c# programming, I find myself creating either: abstract classes: contract not meant to be instantiated as-is. final/sealed classes: implementation not meant to serve as base class to something else. I can't think of any situation where a simple "class" (i.e. neither abstract nor final/sealed) would be "wise programming". Why should a class be anything other than "abstract" or "final/sealed" ? • Lenovo Thinkpad R500 having problems resuming

  Yesterday I installed Ubuntu 11.04 from scratch on my Thinkpad R500, leaving the default power management settings. Yesterday I closed the lid, and this morning when I opened it the laptop resumed correctly. Today during lunch the laptop went to sleep without me closing the lid, and there was no way to wake it up by typing ESC or moving the mouse or TrackPoint. No disk activity at all. When I briefly pushed the POWER button, the laptop rebooted completely, losing my opened applications. Is it a known problem with Natty/Lenovo Thinkpad R500/ATI? Any idea what could fix the problem?

• What issues lead people to use Japanese-specific encodings rather than Unicode?

  At work I come across a lot of Japanese text files in Shift-JIS and other encodings. It causes many mojibake (unreadable character) problems for all computer users. Unicode was intended to solve this sort of problem by defining a single character set for all languages, and the UTF-8 serialization is recommended for use on the Internet. So why doesn't everybody switch from Japanese-specific encodings to UTF-8? What issues with or disadvantages of UTF-8 are holding people back? EDIT: The W3C lists some known problems with Unicode, could this be a reason too?

• Problem when scaling game screen in Libgdx

  Currently, I'm able to scale the screen by applying this bit of code onto an OrthographicCamera Camera.setToOrtho(true, Gdx.graphics.getWidth() / 2, Gdx.graphics.getHeight() / 2); But something quite strange is happening with this solution, take a look at this picture of my game below Seems fine right? But upon further investigation, many components are rendered off by one pixels, and the tiles all are. Take a closer look I circled a couple of the errors. Note that the shadow of the warrior I circled appears fine for the other warriors. Also keep in mind that everything is rendered at pixel-perfect precision when I disable the scaling. I actually thought of a possible source for the problem as I'm writing this but I decided to still post this because I would assume somebody else might run into the same issue.

• WebCenter Content Web Search Performance: Do you really need that folder path info?

  End-users want content at their fingertips at the speed of thought if possible. When running search operations in the WebCenter Conter Web Interface every second or fraction of a second improvement does matter. When doing some trace analysis on the systemdatabase tracing on a customer environment, we came across some SQL queries that were unnecessarily being triggered! These were related to determining the folder path for every entry part of the search result set. However, this folder path was not even being used as part of the displayed information in the user interface.Why was the folder path information being collected when it was not even displayed in the UI? We found that the configuration parameter 'FolderPathInSearchResults' was set to 'true' under Administration > Admin Server > General Configuration > Additional Configuration Variables as shown below:When executing a quicksearch by keyword we were getting 100 out of 2280 entries in the first page of the result set.When thera 'FolderPathInSearchResults' configuration parameter is set to 'true', the following queries appear in the systemdatabase tracing:100 executions for a query on the FolderFiles table for each of the documents displayed in the first page:>systemdatabase/6       12.13 11:17:48.188      IdcServer-199   1.45 ms. SELECT * FROM FolderFiles WHERE dDocName='SLC02VGVUSORAC140641' AND fLinkRank=0[Executed. • Upgrade to 12.04, nothing in dash, no date&time

  I've upgraded from ubuntu netbook remix something to 12.04 lts, and I've got two issues. (Got an Asus eeePc 32bits, Intel 945GME x86/MMX/SSE2 and Intel Atom CPU N270 @ 1.6Ghz x2) Nothing in the dash. Only the "home" tab, other tabs are missing. No search result whatsoever. Missing elements in the system panel, privacy and date&time. No date&time on the right corner either. I've tried to reset unity with the terminal but the process was a whole mess full of errors. It did show date&time in the system panel (not on the top-right corner) while the process was going on in the terminal. But then it was such a mess (no more icons on the right corner amongst other things), and the process wouldn't complete: so I had to reboot the computer and get unity as before, still no date&time and privacy.   I have an app that implements some automations when an USB key is plugged. While developing, I have to test it in a specific environment (derivative from Debian Squeeze). The app subscribe to HAL events via DBUS. The problem is: my desk is on the third floor while my test machines are in the basement. I would really like to have a way to simulate a USB plug. usbip does not work on Ubuntu. I can't manage to use the g_mass_storage module on Ubuntu (I lack the dummy_hcd module) and in Debian. Maybe it is possible to simulate a dbus call? My work station is on Ubuntu 12.04.

• How to setup VPN as Proxy

  I have an PerfectPrivacy VPN connected via the OpenVPN-Network-Manger-Plugin (Ubuntu 12.04.1) and I want to assign a system wide proxy over that VPN. I have tried proxydriver that should do that automatically, but it works partially. The browser says that I have the IP of the VPN, but when I tried to send an eMail over SMTP (Port 25), I can´t connect to the mail server. In our company the smtp server port is closed, but that should be not a problem, when I do that over a VPN, shouldn´t it? greetings

  I have to build a new website for my client.. and he needs this stuff: A user generated content website.. where users can upload their own videos.. (i will use a video hosting platform with api like fliqz.com) I must manage a big user system.. where users can create their own "sub-users"... the site must manage paid subscriptions and payments through paypal.. and other payment gateways... So the question is.. i have to use a pre-built CMS and extend it.. or just a good framework? I've been thinking about joomla, drupal and expressionengine... It's not neccesary to use a open source cms... I've looking at drupal.. but is not as easy to understand and extend... Can anyone help me to make a good decision?

  With backlinkwatch.com I can get a list of pages that link to a particular website. Unfortunately, it lists tons of obscure blogs and small forums, it has hard to find what link is really important. Is there a similar service, where links would be displayed sorted by "importance"? For instance, a link New York Times would be shown at the top of the list, while links in small blogs would not appear before a few pages. "Importance" can be subjective, so I suggest using the PageRank, but other metrics could be fine too.

  My Thinkpad R500 has back/forward keys just about the direction keys, so on Firefox I keep losing entered text, accidentally. How to disable these back/forward keys? • Paypal (sandbox) buy now link redirects to paypal (sandbox) login page instead of order summary

  Hi, Before going live I try to test the paypal process against the paypal sandbox mode, but after the summary of what the user is going to pay on my website(buy now button), the link does not redirect to a paypal summary of the prder but ask the user to connect to paypal. Even after logging into the buyer sandbox account there's no summary of the order. It just disappears.   Hi, I have registered an enumeration type "ClefType" within my header file - this enum is registered with the MetaObject system using the Q_DECLARE_METATYPE and Q_ENUMS macros. qRegisterMetaType is also called in the class constructor. This allows me to use this type in a Q_PROPERTY, this all works fine. However, later on, I need to be able to get hold of the Q_PROPERTY of this enum type, given the object - in a form that is suitable for serialization. Ideally, it would be useful to store the integer value for that enum member, because I don't want this to be specific to the type of enum that is used - eventually I want to have several different enums. // This is inside a loop over all the properties on a given object QMetaProperty property = metaObject->property(propertyId); QString propertyName = propertyMeta.name(); QVariant variantValue = propertyMeta.read(serializeObject); // If, internally, this QVariant is of type 'ClefType', // how do I pull out the integer value for this enum?   Hi, I have built a class-system that uses multiple derivations of a baseclass (object-class1-class2-class3): class class1(object): def __init__(self): print "class1.__init__()" object.__init__(self) class class2(class1): def __init__(self): print "class2.__init__()" class1.__init__(self) class class3(class2): def __init__(self): print "class3.__init__()" class2.__init__(self) x = class3() It works as expected and prints: class3.__init__() class2.__init__() class1.__init__() Now I would like to replace the 3 lines object.__init__(self) ... class1.__init__(self) ... class2.__init__(self) with something like this: currentParentClass().__init__() ... currentParentClass().__init__() ... currentParentClass().__init__() So basically, i want to create a class-system where i don't have to type "classXYZ.doSomething()". As mentioned above, I want to get the "current class's parent-class". Replacing the three lines with: super(type(self), self).__init__() does NOT work (it always returns the parent-class of the current instance - class2) and will result in an endless loop printing: class3.__init__() class2.__init__() class2.__init__() class2.__init__() class2.__init__() ... So is there a function that can give me the current class's parent-class? Thank you for your help! • Bring the windows of two different apps in mac os to the front?

  How do I easily bring to the front of the screen the top windows of two different application in Mac OS X? I prefer to use the keyboard only. Example Scenario: Say there are 10 Firefox and 10 TextEdit windows open. Also, say that these windows are having various different sizes so that the windows of each application fully cover the desktop. Goal: I want to bring to the front of my screen the top window of Firefox along with the top window of TextEdit, so that I can visually compare some data. Restrictions: I cannot use expose (since having 20 windows on the screen already renders expose useless) And I do not want to use multiple desktop (too complex and time consuming) I prefer to use a keyboard shortcut. Unfortunately cmd+tab brings all windows of each application to the top, covering all windows of the other applications.

• Installing gitosis and closed port?

  I'm trying to install gitosis on a Server (hosted by OVH and running Ubuntu server 11.04). I've done it a few times and never had any problems. But this time I have something very wired when I simply try to clone gitosis. [root@ovks-1:~/]#git clone git://eagain.net/gitosis.git Cloning into gitosis... eagain.net[0: 208.78.102.120]: errno=Connection refused fatal: unable to connect a socket (Connection refused) zsh: exit 128 git clone git://eagain.net/gitosis.git Based on my searches it looks like the port 9418 is closed. But I don't understand, a server by definition shouldn't have any closed port and I can't find a way to see if they are. So how can I check is a port is open and how can I open it if closed? • Buying replacement Macbook Pro Battery - Genuine vs. eBay

  I'm looking to replace my Macbook Pro's battery (15", last model before the Unibody). It's currently at 55% capacity (as reported in System Information and Battery Health Monitor). I've reset the SMC firmware, calibrated the battery, and it's just not lasting that long anymore. I've seen some genuine replacements that are "pulls" (pulled from used computers) that are rated at least 90% capacity (iFixit, MacSales). I've also seen a variety of batteries on eBay that look more like clones than genuine batteries, but are new. A new battery from Apple is $129, and when I brought my laptop in they ran the Battery test and said if I bought the battery right then they'd give me a discount (around $100). Anyone out there used one of these "OEM Compatible" batteries? Fit/finish good? (I don't want a funky color or a corner that sticks out.) Or, should I just suck it up and get the genuine replacement (for about twice the price)?
