  • Dye Sub printer with specific prints remaining - can I command-line query this?

    Hey, I've got a Sony Dye-Sub printer that holds ink/paper sets - i.e. a very certain amount of ink and paper for ~200 prints. This information is available to me from within Control Panel Printers Preferences Printer Device Information (i.e. current 189 remaining prints). Any way I can perhaps get this information from the command line? I'd like to write a little program to tell me when the number of prints gets low (i.e. < 20), rather than suffer the annoying Windows "run out of paper" popup. I've found the Windows VBScript print utilities, but can't seem to find the request I need for this. Any suggestions? Jason

    I'm trying to write an backup script that will exclude files over a certain size. My script gives the proper command, but when run within the script it outputs an an error. However if the same command is run manually everything works...??? If I just do an "order by name desc" for example then the the whole grouping gets ignored. So how can I order within a group.

  • Including email, IMs, configs, etc. in documentation or notes

    The shop I work in is pretty laid-back. We're on a documentation kick, only because historically we've been very bad with it. We do a lot of our brainstorming in face-to-face meetings, and also do a lot of communication via IM in addition to email. While I'm usually pretty good about documentation and keeping copious lab notes, I just finished a build of a host and spent hours searching through IMs, emails, files on my workstation, etc. to pull out anything I missed in my lab notes, which formed a large amount of the basis for the internal documentation. Does anyone have any thoughts on, aside from manually saving things to a project directory, managing various data sources (especially email and IM) and tracking them on project basis? Ideally, I'd like an easy way to put copies of emails, IM logs, etc. into a project-specific directory on my workstation and then just have a cron job that syncs that up with a shared folder. This isn't really a candidate for anything more advanced, as the bulk of the data will be copies of configs, code, etc. Here are the big restrictions: Email is via a centralized Zimbra install, so nothing can happen server-side. My workstation is Linux. Aside from writing Pidgin and Thunderbird plugins that let me tag chats and emails as belonging to a project, and then copy them to the appropriate place... any thoughts?   • WPF Textbox "normal" text input

    G'day, I'm not sure if this is a problem relevant to only me or if anyone else has this issue also. None the less, I'll try and describe what is going on here. I have a few textbox's, default style, etc. I set an explicit maxwidth and maxheight to prevent resize when the text exceeds the default width of the textbox. The issue is that the text wraps to the next line, but I only want single line. So I set maxlines to 1 and textwrapping to NoWrap. That's fine. Now the carat and typed text disappears under the edges of the textbox when the width is exceeded and the only way I can get the carat and newly typed text back into view is by pressing the left and right arrows. Coming from MFC and using textboxes all the time with HTML, I would have thought the default behaviour would be to have the textbox content scroll with the carat or am I missing something here?   • Should entry level programmers be able to answer FizzBuzz?

    When interviewing entry level developers, I have used the FizzBuzz question as a type of acid test. Generally, I ask for a solution in pseudo-code or any language of their choice. If someone can't answer this question -- or get reasonably close, the interview generally ends shortly thereafter and we don't progress to more interesting code questions. In your opinion, is it fair/appropriate/accurate to filter entry-level staff in this manner? Should the average four year college graduate have a reasonable enough foundation to be able to throw up a pseudo-code solution of FizzBuzz?

  • Which tutorial on Clojure is best?

    I'm interested in learning Clojure. The Getting Started page on Clojure.net is pretty minimal. Is there a good language introduction or tutorial out there? Which would you recommend? Answer: I have watched the videos on youtube called Intro to Clojure. I don't recommend those. They are a little too brief and don't give a lot of background. The talks by Clojure creater Rich Hickey. I am finding the "for Java developers" version very useful.

  • What Level of Education Is Most Useful?

    If you were going to hire a programmer to work for/with you, what level of CS education would you prefer them to have and why? This assumes all other things are equal which, of course, they never are in real life. Self taught? Bachelor's? Masters? PHD? The important part of the answer is why, not the level. I'm looking for how important people think a Computer Science education really is and if one can go too far. A little clarification: To make things a little more even, assume you're hiring them without a lot of work experience. Obviously having a higher education is of less value the farther you are from graduation.

  • Visual Studio 2008 adding incorrect working folders to TFS Workspace

    I am using Visual Studio 2008 with TFS. I have one workspace set up with one working folder. I map the root source control folder $/ to C:\TFS and get all code. When working on any project under the root, Visual Studio will randomly add incorrectly mapped working folders to my workspace. For example, it might map $/WebProject/ to C:\TFS\WebProject\DataAccess -- where the real files exist at C:\TFS\WebProject. Once it incorrectly adds these working folders, I can no longer open the solution. I am forced to remove the working folders that Visual Studio added and get latest from TFS. Has anyone experienced this? Is there something I can do to avoid running into this?
