  • Thunderbird loses all settings if PC is being shut down abnormally

    If my PC shut downs suddenly with power dips etc I loose all my Thunderburd settings and mail in Thunderbird, although the Profiles folder still exists. I had a look in the profiles text file and that file looks unchanged. Are there things I could try to solve this issue? I do not know what do do? Any help will be greaatly appreciated.   • Boot Camp fails to create a Windows partition because it can't move files

    I'm running Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) on a mac with a 320 GB drive, 167GB free space, and I can't get Boot Camp running. The wizard starts creating the Windows partition, but fails with a message claiming it cannot move some files. The message suggests to back up my hard disk, reformat it, restore my files, and re-run Boot Camp wizard. The problem is: Though I do have backups (Time Machine), I don't feel like formatting my hard disk right now :-) I found a thread in some forum discussing this problem. The suggestion was to defragment my volume with iDefrag, and lots of people claimed that solved the issue. So I went ahead and got iDefrag 1.7.1, created a bootable DVD and chose the "compact" setting recommended before partitioning - but still no luck with Boot Camp! So how do I get this working? Fun note: last year, I briefly set up Boot Camp with 10.5, and it worked perfectly. Probably I did not use that much hard disk space back then...

  • Why is cpu power management not working in Server 2012 with Hyper-V?

    We've been using Server2008R2 with Hyper-V for a couple of years now and chose it at the time because of its ability to make use of Intel SpeedStep and AMD PowerNow! Now with Server 2012 and Hyper-V V3, all power management abilities seem to be gone. The CPUs are always at full speed and our servers need twice the energy as before while idling. (Yes, the CPU P-states are enabled in the BIOS) Is this by design? Is there a workaround to enable cpu power management again? Despite the great new features of Hyper-V 3, this would be a show-stopper for us since we are very concerned about energy consumption.

  • Does Exchange support plussed users (e.g. [email protected]) or a similar mechanism?

    Sendmail supports a feature called 'plussed users'. Once enabled, emails sent to [email protected], [email protected] and [email protected] are automatically delivered just like mails to [email protected]. There is no need to register or set up these 'plus suffixes'. The user can just use them and set up client-side filtering rules on his own. Does Exchange support a similar mechanism? If so, how to enable it? Note that I don't want answers about other means of filtering, e.g. spam/junk filtering, server-side or client-side rules, email aliases/addresses that are configured explicitly and so on.

  • VPN sharing on Mac OS X 10.5 machine

    I have a rather weird problem. I want to share a VPN connection that has been established by my Mac OS X 10.5 computer with another machine in my network. This is what I did: In the /etc/hostcongig file on the main computer I added the line: IPFORWARDING=-YES- I assigned a fixed IP address to my computer (192.168.178.30), a fixed one to the other machine (192.168.178.60) and my computer's IP address as gateway on the other machine. I connected to my VPN using the internal Mac OS X VPN client (PPTP connection) I run this script: #!/bin/sh natd -same_ports -use_sockets -unregistered_only -dynamic -interface ppp0 -clamp_mss ipfw -f flush ipfw add divert natd ip from any to any via ppp0 ipfw add pass all from any to any sysctl -w net.inet.ip.forwarding=1 Source: Using (and sharing) a VPN connection on your Mac Now everthing works smootly, however speed is an issue. I get 1,8 MBit/s on my main machine and only 0,3 - 0,6 MBit/s on the other one. My question: What could possibly be wrong? Do I have to tweak MTU settings, is there any packet inspection ongoing that needs time....? Any help appreciated!

  • long access times and errors in iis application

    Hi, I am having an issue with an IIS application (details of environment at the end of the message). The web site works great most of the time and I cannot reproduce any error in our test system. On the live system however with on averare of 5-15 requests per second I have a problem with that some requests (about 0.05%) will take over 300 seconds to complete. The other requests complete withing 5-10 seconds. It seem like if all the errornous requests end up with a Timer_EntityBody error in the error log. I have never seen this as an end user but I guess that they will receive some kind of error message. I am trying to find out what can be causing this errornous behaviour. Any ideas are welcome. I have read something about that there can be an MTU issue if ICMP and MTU protocols are blocked in the firewall. Does that sound reasonable? I have also read about updating to IIS 7 should do the trick. Does it sound reasonable? I think that the problem has another cause but I have no idea of what. I have tried running hte perormance monitor, monitoring for database locks and active transaction counts. I can see some of these in the perfmon log for the MSSQL server (another machine) for example: Active transactions is sometimes peaking and sometimes for long periods Lock waits per seconds is sometimes peaking Transactions per second is sometimes peaking Page IO Latch wait is sometimes peaking Lock wait time (ms) is sometimes peaking But I cannot see that any of these correlate to the errors in the IIS error log. On the IIS server machine I can also see with perfmon that some values peak a few times during a day: Request execution time Avg disk queue length I can neither see that any of these correlate to the errors in the IIS error log.   • Firefox: Where does firefox store the opened windows/tabs/urls on Crash for Restoring?

    Hello in which location and file does firefox save, the last windows I had opened (when firefox crashed). I have a complete "hot dump" copy of a file system and need to restore the state firefox was when the system crasehd but I cant not restore the full backupitself. I can only extract the files of firefox, but I do not know in which files i have to search for the urls that were last opened when the snapshop of the whole filesystem was done. thanks!!!

  • What are the requirements for Windows Remote Assistance over Teredo?

    I try to get the Windows 7 (or Vista) remote assistance feature to work, without using UPnP on the novices computer. After enabling Teredo on the expert's computer (that is in a corporate network, and therefore has teredo disabled by default), I tried to connect to the novice both using Easy Connect and the invitation file with no success. My triubleshooting included the following (so far). A connection to the novice from my home pc was successful, hinting at a misconfiguration on the experts side. Both computers have a "qualified" connection to the Teredo Server. Both computers have a valid Teredo IP, access to the Global_ PNRP cloud and can resolve names registered with PNRP on the other computer. The expert can resolve the PNRP Id automatically generated with an Easy Connect help request Both computers can ping the other's PNRP name. Both computers can ping the other's Teredo IP Address using ping -6 Now, I am a little stumped. I expected Remote Assistance to work at this point, since my corporate firewall has no Teredo filtering. What could RA cause not to work in this setting? Thanks in advance!

I have a site called testsite.co.za, now in the index.php i want to include the include.php file, the include.php is not in the root of testsite.co.za, Now i created another folder includes in the web root directory which contains include.php my code looks as follows in testsite.co.za/index.php require_once '../includes/include.php'; if i run testsite.co.za it can't detect include.php. Is there a certain server setting I need to change in order to include this file?   • How to embed/hardcode SRT subtitles into mp4 videos with VLC?

    I'm looking for a way to "burn in" or render/rembed/hardcode subtitles (from an SRT file) into an MP4 video with VLC. But no matter what options I use, it never works properly. I get a file that plays video way too fast (audio is normal), or one that plays normally, but actually does not have embedded subtitles. Also, with some options (like the one below) it does not play in QuickTime, only in VLC. So the main question is: how can I make this work in VLC? Secondary questions are: How do I decide which options I should set? Which settings are best if I want to leave the file bitrate etc. the same as much as possible, only embed subtitles? It seems I cannot leave the field empty or Video/Audio unchecked, so I guess I would first need to figure out the original audio and video bitrate. What do the "Scale" and "Channels" options mean? ... none of which are answered within the VLC documentation.   • PS/2 mouse and USB keyboard combination with Windows 7 isn't possible?

    I have a PS/2 keyboard, and a PS/2 mouse - I'm using an Ubuntu/Win7 (x86) combo. Yesterday I replaced the keyboard with a new USB one. Until a restart everything was fine, but after it, the cursor couldn't be moved. I opened the device manager, and it displayed Code 10 - This device will not start. If I place my PS/2 keyboard back, restart, then the mouse will work fine. I tried the USB keyboard, PS/2 mouse combo in Ubuntu, and it works there - so it is a Windows-only problem. I downloaded the mouse's driver (it's a Netscroll 200 Laser) - nothing changed. Please help me! Thanks!

  • Fan is spinning too fast just in Windows - software?

    I've recently replaced my fans (CPU, GPU, and bought a CHA fan). The GPU remained the same, but I've seen it when it was spinned 2 times faster, than it usual... but it is rarely. The problem is, that the CPU fan in Windows (especially 7) spinned too much, 'cos it keeps in under 40°C, and it is spinning with 3300-3600 RPM, which is too high I think. If I swich to Ubuntu, it keeps on ~40-45°C with with 2500-2800 RPM, which is a big difference in numbers, and in noise. I'm looking for a manual fan control solution, or just reduce the Windows' multipliers of fan speed control, somehow... I was bought the new fans because of the lower noise (and it does it, but not with 3.6k RMP). Thank you!

This behavior can be disabled by creating the key ignoreShiftOverride with DWORD setting of 1 in the registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\ Software\ Microsoft\ Windows NT\ CurrentVersion\ Winlogon. I'd like to be able to configure this setting for each individual user. How can this be done?

  • Alternative to middle click for Linux in Parallels on a MacBook?

    I'm running Ubuntu on Parallels on a MacBook, and there is no middle-click on the MacBook trackpad - which is annoying because it means you can't do X's paste action. Is there an alternative? I'm hoping there is a keyboard binding to X's paste or better a way to bind a keyboard key/combination to the middle-click action. Edit: I know about the emulate three-button mouse option, but that won't work for me because the trackpad only allows you to click one button at a time

  • I get a 403 when requesting a JS file from CloudFront

    This is new to me so please excuse me if I have no idea what I'm talking about (: I'm trying to set up my own CDN with CloudFront and S3 through a subdomain by adding a CNAME to that subdomain to point to the CloudFront. It seems like I get a 403 when trying to load the file, this is the original s3 link : https://s3.amazonaws.com/chaoscod3r_aws_cdn/libs/polyfills/json3_polyfill.js ; which seems to be working after setting the permission to everyone to open / download. But when trying to use the subdomain to request the file : http://cdn.chaoscod3r.com/libs/polyfills/json3_polyfill.js ; it seems like I get that 403. Could anyone help me out with this one ?

  • Will Windows 7 setup overwrite Windows 8 and Ubuntu boot records?

    I have Windows 8 and Ubuntu installed, both an the same physical hd (2 partitions). Windows 8 was installed after a format, Ubuntu afterwards. I used EasyBCD to setup the boot records and the boot menu order. I want to install Windows 7 as a third operating system and just add its boot record with EasyBCD. Will there be any unwanted behavior when I install it on a third partition? I already have 100 GB of unallocated space on the disk, though have not yet made the partition. I red on this site that I should install the oldest OS first, but than I would have to do a format and start again from scratch (which I clearly do not want to do). edit: On this site, the opposite is claimed, saying it's also possible to install Windows 7 after Windows 8. However, it will restore a Windows 7 boot menu instead one of Windows 8.

  • How to "paint" the data layer of a CD using a CD drive?

    I am looking for software to "paint" geometric shapes, dots or lines on the data layer of a writable CD (or DVD) using a standard drive. These do not have to be visible to the naked eye; I'd try to abuse the small dot size on the CD for some scientific measurements. I am aware of the "LightScribe" feature of some drives and that is not what I am looking for. Most of the software available is of course limited to write music or data, on does not offer the low-level "place a dot at this radius, this angle"-functionality. Is there something out there for me?
