• install android sdk on kubuntu

  I'm trying to follow the instructions for installing the android sdk found here: http://developer.android.com/sdk/installing/adding-packages.html After i've unpackaged and i run the android program under tools, I don't get all the options that I'm supposed to. The only 2 folders that show up are tools, and extras. Under tools, it only shows the "Android SDK Tools" with the status "Installed". Under the "extas" folder, I have nothing. I've made sure that my http: proxy settings are correct. And I've checked the logs. there are no errors. According to the android developer site, I'm supposed to install the SDK platform tools. has anyone tried this on ubuntu? I also checked and saw others were instructed to do an apt-get install ia32-libs but it failed for me. Besides which, I am running the 32bit os... so I don't think i would need to install that... ?? I've also tried following the instructions found here: http://forums.team-nocturnal.com/showthread.php/772 But... • Upgrading kubuntu to version 12.10 stops

  It's on the step "Installing the upgrades", says it's "Configuring virtuoso-opensource-6.1", and the last line in the log is "Unpacking linux-headers-3.5.0-17 (from .../linux-headers-3.5.0-17_3.5.0-17.28_all.deb) ..." .. And the application just sits there doing nothing. Trying to abort now says "The system could be in an unstable state if you cancel the upgrade", so I'd rather not do that :/ Any idea how I can kick the upgrade into gear again? EDIT: I closed the program, ran dpkg -configure (which failed). Booted ran configure again, some configuration, and things are up and running again. I'm leaving this open as I have no idea what the root cause was.

  Question: Are, and if so what, there packages for download that I can get netbook to understand it is not a desktop and that it is a netbook. Info: I'm running an Acer Aspire One with ubuntu desktop 9.10. I tried Ubuntu Netbook Remix first but it has graphics issues with the aspire one. So I changed to Ubuntu Desktop. It was the only distro (after debian, centOS, Fedora, and Knoppix all failed me) that I managed to get working. The only thing is that it is having issues doing things that a netbook/laptop should be doing. most notably is that it will run it's battery dead if I close the screen and throw it into my back pack. It seems to just stay fully on and runs it's self to death. also it will lock up some times if I close the screen and come back to it 10 or 20 minutes later. It also won't retain volume settings when I reboot, as well as screen brightness. and just a couple of other things that I can't quite put my finger on, but just seem amiss. like I said, Essentially my netbook thinks it is a desktop, how can I fix this? ~N

  I apologize if this question has come up before - I can't seem to find it. Tonight my wife and I purchased a small samsung netbook and have been enjoying it for a light-weight solution around the house. My wife has a game she loves to play that was installed on her last laptop, but we'd like to put it on the netbook. The problem is, there's no cd-drive on the netbook and the game must be installed from a CD. What other ways can I install software from a CD onto the netbook lacking a local cd-drive on the device itself? I would prefer to not have to create image files, and mount virtual drives, etc.

• How to configure kubuntu for lightweight low-memory usage?

  I just upgraded an old, secondary computer to the latest Kubuntu (10.10). It seems the effort was a bit too much for the hardware and one 512MB memory module died. I tried to take it away, clean the connectors, put it back several times, but to no avail. Until such a time I can find a second hand DDR memory module, I am left with a meagre 256MB RAM, which is below the official requirements (384MB) to run Kubuntu/KDE. Indeed: the computer constantly swaps the memory, making everything painfully slow. Since Kubuntu is already installed and I use it on all my computers (and I want to keep KDE for when I really need it), how can I configure Kubuntu to squeeze out every bit of unnecessary memory usage? This is a secondary computer but still very useful. We use it mostly for web browsing. A "lightweight" tag is missing.

  Okay so when i was running the Ubuntu installer i found something called "Desktop Interface". It was apparently selected as Ubuntu. I looked at the full set of options and found out that there's Kubuntu there! I want to know what Kubuntu is. If i can get it on Virtualbox then how? I want to try out Kubuntu but i don't want to over write my Ubuntu with Kubuntu. • Ubuntu 9.10 is not starting on netbook

  I installed Ubuntu 9.10 onto my external hard drive cause it's cool to be able to borrow a friend's laptop and be able to have my entire system. It works on the 2 systems i tested it on: my desktop and my mom's laptop. I had to work on something earlier so i borrowed my friend's netbook. I started it up, chose Ubuntu 9.10.20 and it got to the Ubuntu loading screen with the 3 people holding hands right before user selection then it suddenly went black. Naturally, i freaked out because it wasn't my laptop. I held the power button down and reset the netbook but the screen was still black, it didn't even show the BIOS. I repeated the process without my hard drive, and it was still black without the BIOS showing up. I had to remove the battery, plug it to a power source, and power up to start the netbook up again. Can anyone tell me what happened?

  I've got a home network set up with a couple of Windows XP computers. I'm now trying to add our new netbook to it - also running XP. (The goal is to share files and a printer.) I have run the Network Setup Wizard and made sure that the workgroup name is the same as the others, and have rebooted several times, but whenever I try to 'view workgroup computers,' the only one on it is the netbook. I have a Windows XP CD, but the netbook has no drive. The wizard has some options for floppy disks, but that's useless to me these days. What is this wizard actually trying to do, and can I do it manually? Surely it can't be this hard.

• oracle virtualbox doesn't work for host Kubuntu since Lucid Lynx 10.04

  I have a thinkpad edge 14 core i3 2.4 ghz and 4g ram; I have tried kubuntu 10.04, 10.10, 11.10, 12.04 and 12.10 (all x64 architecture); Both oracle and ose virtualbox only works properly to install XP and windows 7 quest system on kubuntu 10.04; For every other kubuntu release since, the guest installation goes as far as formatting the virtual drive, freezes at this step, and doesn't even go as far as copying files to hard-drive to begin installation. But virtualbox has not stopped responding to commands; I can kill that one specific window with the problem installation ("machine" - "close" - "power off the machine") and start over again without having to force-kill virtualbox application. If anyone knows how I can go about addressing this problem, any help you can provide would be very much appreciated. Thank You.

• Cyberlink PowerDVD 9 on netbook

  I tried to install CyberLink's PowerDVD 9 on a friend's netbook. The installation went OK (even though the install screen is too big to fit and you can't see the "Next " buttons etc.), but once installed, PowerDVD 9 refuses to launch. It claims it requires at least 1024x768 resolution - the Acer netbook has 1024x600 :-( Any way / hack / trick to get PowerDVD9 to work anyway?? Couldn't it scale down to e.g. 800x600?

  Hi all, Just today during a freak accident, a book got tossed onto my Samsung N120 netbook while it was open and the 'G' and 'T' key flew off. Part of the plastic underneath broke off.   My Windows CE Netbook connects to wireless network at work but can't connect at home. I tried it at work just to test that the WiFi on the Netbook does actually work and it was fine (if a bit slow) It can see the connection, and the signal, tries to "Associate" with my home network but "Fails" it will sometimes retry Encryption is set to TKIP Authentication WPA-PSK EAP Type TLS I have tried all sorts of other settings but there seems to be very little to try?? • Windows update on netbook requires CD (hint, there's no CD drive)

  An "Important" update for Microsoft Works (via Windows Update) on a Dell netbook gets about halfway through and then pops up with the super-awesome "Please insert Microsoft Works 9.0 disc" message. Of course, the netbook has no CD rom drive, there is no handy folder (that i can find) containing "Works9.msi", and I have no Works9 disc. It wouldn't be so bad, except the update keeps coming up everytime WU runs. Any suggestions?

• Dual boot :Windows 7 partition deleted after Kubuntu 14.04 install...Weird!

  I've bought two new SSD's in order to install Kubuntu on one and Win 7 on the other one. Before I had Linux Mint and Win7 together one just one SSD. So first I installed win7 as recommended, and then used the guided installer of Kubuntu to install Kubuntu. I selected the second SSD, chose the option "use entire disk and install", but to my surprise after rebooting and selecting win7 boot loader from grub2, I got a prompt that my windows installation is damaged, and I need to run the repair option from the installation disk. So I booted into Kubuntu again, fired up kparted and saw that indeed my windows partition got deleted, except the recovery partition. I don't understand what happened. I am not new to this topic, and this was not my first time installing Ubuntu alongside windows. I have never ever had that problem. What can I do to make sure this won't happen again, so I won't waste another 2 hours of my life? ?? Thanks a lot !

• Netbook (Samsung N220) on Ubuntu 10.04 slows down WiFi for other computers

  I encountered a really odd problem with my new netbook. I am running Ubuntu 10.04 on a Samsung N220 Mito. So far everything worked fine. Now I tried the machine for the first time in our work group where we have a wifi (with internet access) for all laptops. The wifi is controlled by a computer running Suse 9.3 which provides a DHCP server and imposes a firewall. At the moment there is only a macbook in the wifi, where no problems with the internet or wifi connection are encountered. Now coming to my actual problem: In addition to the macbook i connect the Samsung N220 to the Wifi. Problem: My download speed is for some reason limited to 70KB/s max. This is neither a limitation of the server/website i browse on, nor a configuration of the netbook: at home i have 500KB/s download speeds. Furthermore, it is not a default limitation for "untrusted" or "new machines" in the wifi, as for instance other new laptops get full speed internet with our wifi. Problem: Once the Samsung N220 is generating traffic in the wifi, the wifi is slowed down dramatically for all other machines: I run a ping to the router from the macbook. The ping times with the N220 ideling are 2-6ms. When I start downloading or browsing in the web with the N220 the ping speed drops to 800ms. Vice versa, when the macbook is generating the traffic the ping of the N220 to the rooter stays constant at around 2-6ms. So clearly, it is some problem originating from my netbook or maybe its treatment in the wifi. Thanks for any help

  I've had Kubuntu installed for several years, updating from one major release to another, and now I think I'd like to try to switch to Lubuntu. But since my distribution is already tuned and shaped to satisfy my needs, I'd like not to get a fresh installation, but just purge kubuntu-desktop and install lubuntu-desktop. But when I execute sudo apt-get install lubuntu-desktop, it gives me an error of the following essence: The following packages have unmet dependencies: lubuntu-desktop : Depends: usb-modeswitch but it is not going to be installed E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages. But: Reading state information... Done usb-modeswitch-data is already the newest version. So, my question is: what actions should I take in order to obtain a clean and fresh installation of Lubuntu? And also, how do I safely remove all the kubuntu-desktop-related stuff?

• PHP IDE for Ubuntu Netbook Remix 9.10

  I've installed Ubuntu Netbook Remix on my netbook and I'm wondering what would be a good IDE to use for mainly PHP development. I've used Komodo Edit in past Linux distributions but it doesn't seem to play well with Ubuntu Network Remix (it doesn't shows up in the remix "desktop", and I don't feel like opening the terminal and typing komodo every time I need to code). I'm considering Eclipse with a PHP plugin, but I've two big problems with Eclipse: I don't like the way it forces me to create a new project when I just want to edit a file. I'm not sure which PHP plugin I should install: Eclipse PDT, PHP Eclipse or Aptana - I don't really understand the differences between Eclipse PDT and PHP Eclipse. Which IDE would you recommend (doesn't need to be Eclipse)? Thanks in advance!

• Good Linux Distro for Disconnected Netbook

  I'm deployed to Afghanistan with the Army and I have a friend who's netbook had his hard drive take a dump on him. He ordered a new hard drive and I was able to download and burn a copy of Ubuntu to disk from work. However the default install doesn't support most of the media that he wants to watch (AVI files, probably some DIVX video) without installing extra packages. We don't have internet in the tent and really don't have a vaiable option for downloading additional packages through the package manager anywhere here. The computer is a small HP netbook. All my friend wants is to watch ripped movies. Does anyone know of a good way to do either of the following: Download packages seperately and install them via CD A distro that is going to come preloaded with all of the packages and needed to watch just about any type of video file you can think of? • Installing any linux distro on new netbook hangs midway

  I have just bought a new netbook, Lenovo S110 with a starter Window 7, 32 bit Operating system. I wanted to wipe away Windows and go with Debian or Ubuntu. I have successfully made my USB drive bootable with the Debian net install. The problem is, my computer always hangs up at the start of the installation (with the latter shown on screen). Keyboard stopped responding , and USB was probably not reading (since it was not blinking anymore). I know the bootable USB drive with Debian installer is working since installation works on other netbooks. What should I do to install Linux on my netbook?
