• How do I change the keyboard layout to a non-standard one on a Live (USB) session?

  I am running Ubuntu 13.04 in a Live (USB) session. My physical keyboard layout is called Bépo, it is the French language Dvorak method-based layout. I would like to change my input layout to this too. To do this, I tried booting in a French spoken session, then open the Keyboard Layout preferences app. Normally, to add a layout, you should click on the + sign and select your layout. However the list that appears is very short and does not contain what I want. On the contrary, on a persistent non-live installation, the choice of Bépo is present. This is also the case during an installation of Ubuntu. So I do I change the keyboard layout of my live session to the correct one?

• ffmpeg: Could not find codec parameters for stream 0 (Video: h264) unspecified size

  I try to convert a video from .raw to .mp4. For this reason I did download, build and install both x264 and ffmpeg. However, command: ffmpeg -f h264 -i output.raw -vcodec copy output.mp4 fails with error (shown in picture below). Is there any way to fix this? • Local Live Quicktime Video Broadcast, latency?

  I'm looking into the feasibility of using a local server to distribute live video of a conference to delegates in the same room. They would still hear the live audio coming from the speaker, so only the video would be streamed. I was considering a Darwin Steaming Server (a lot of iPhone users to support) and encoding with H.264. My main concern is latency across the network. Even with everything running locally, would there be lip sync issues between the live audio and the 'live' video stream? It feels like there will be problems given the encoding, broadcasting, decoding to be completed, but I've never done any like this before so thought I would check. Thanks

• How to stream H264 Video from camera over FTP?

  I bought a h264 security camera system last year and set it up to ftp video to my computer. I was able to get the video to play (even though it played a little fast) on Ubuntu 11.04 using mplayer. A few months ago, I did a fresh install of 12.04 and I cannot seem to get the video to play with mplayer, smplayer or VLC. I have the restricted formats video packages installed and when playing with any of the players, all I get is a gray video. When calling mplayer from the command line to play the video with no options, I get a lot of these errors: [h264 @ 0x7f278c61f280]concealing 1320 DC, 1320 AC, 1320 MV errors No pts value from demuxer to use for frame! pts after filters MISSING I'm not a video expert and have been coming up with a lot of dead ends when Googling for this. Could someone offer some advice about how to play these videos? • Proffesional video editor that can handle FLV?

  I tried Adobe Premiere Pro CS3 and was not able to open my file (unsupported format). Media player can open it thanks to ffdshow (tryouts IIRC). Premiere doesnt seem to want to use ffdshow. I tried renaming it to AVI and hoped Premiere would open it via ffdshow but it didnt and i checked and disabled the dont use ffdshow option in ffdshow video decoder option. What is a good proffesional video editor that can handle FLV? All ffmpeg based editors died on it and virtualdub got close but had a bad framerate. Probably bc it didnt know it was a streaming vid and the start is 26mins of 31min video. • Extracting streaming video from swf

  I am trying to speed up this video by 1.25x to 1.5x, udacity style. I tried grabbing the http://smart.if.uidaho.edu/courses/f2012/cs512/ using the Download Flash & Video Firefox plugin, but it only grabbed the swf player that streams the video. Is there any other way to download this video? (as well as future videos). As a final solution, I can use video capture software while I'm not using the computer, but I don't want that hassle and time delay if possible.

• SnagIt Live Writer Plug-in Updated

  Ah, I love SnagIt from TechSmith and I use the heck out of it almost every day. So no surprise that I've decided some time ago to integrate SnagIt into a few applications that require screen shots extensively. It's been a while since I've posted an update to my small SnagIt Windows Live Writer plug-in. There have been a few nagging issues that have crept up with recent changes in the way SnagIt handles captures in recent versions and they have been addressed in this update of SnagIt. Personally I love SnagIt and use it extensively mostly for blogging, but also for writing documentation and articles etc. While there are many other (and also free) tools out there to do basic screen captures, SnagIt continues to be the most convenient tool for me with its nice built in capture and effects editor that makes creating professional looking captures childishly simple. And maybe even more importantly: SnagIt has a COM interface that can be automated and  makes it super easy to embed into other applications. I've built plugins for SnagIt as well as for one of my company's own tools, Html Help Builder. If you use the Windows Live Writer offline WebLog Editor to write blog posts and have a copy of SnagIt it's probably worth your while to check this out if you haven't already. In case you haven't, this plugin integrates SnagIt with Live Writer so you can easily capture and edit content and embed it into a post. Captures are shown in the SnagIt Preview editor where you can edit the image and apply image markup or effects, before selecting Finish (or Cancel). The final image can then be pasted directly into your Live Writer post. When installed the SnagIt plug-in shows up on the PlugIn list or in the Plug-Ins toolbar shortcut: Once you select the Plug in you get the capture window that allows you to customize the capture process which includes most of the useful SnagIt capture options: Once you're done capturing the image shows up in the SnagIt Image Editor and you can crop, mark up and apply effects. When done you click the Finish button and the image is embedded right into your blog post. Easy - how do you think the images in this blog entry got in here? The beauty of SnagIt is that it's all easily integrated - Capturing, editing and embedding, it only takes a few seconds to do it all especially if you save image effect presets in SnagIt. What's updated The main issue addressed in this update has to do with the plug-in updates the Live Writer window. When a capture starts Live Writer gets minimized to get out of the way to let you pick your capture source. When the capture is complete and the image has been embedded Live Writer is activated once again. Recent versions of SnagIt however had changed the Window positioning of SnagIt so that Live Writer ended up popping up back behind the SnagIt window which was pretty annoying. This update pushes Live Writer back to the top of the window stack using some delaying tactics in the code. There have also been a few small changes to the way the code interacts with the COM object which is more reliable if a capture fails or SnagIt blows up or is locked because it's already in a capture outside of the automation interface. Source Code SnagIt Automation is something I actually use a lot. As mentioned I've integrated this automation into Live Writer as well as my documentation tool Html Help Builder, which I use just about daily. The SnagIt integration has a similar interface in that application and provides similar functionality. It's quite useful to integrate SnagIt into other applications. Because it's quite useful to embed SnagIt into other apps there's source code that you can download and embed into your own applications. The code includes both the dialog class that is automated from Live Writer, as well as the basic capture component that captures images to a disk file. • HTML5 and CSS3 Editing in Windows Live Writer

  Windows Live Writer is a wonderful tool for editing blog posts and getting them posted to your blog. What makes it nice is that it has a small set of useful features, plus a simple plug-in model that has spawned many useful add-ins. Small tool with a reasonably decent plug-in model to extend equals a great solution to a simple problem. If you're running Windows, have a blog and aren’t using Live Writer you’re probably doing it wrong…One of Live Writer’s nice features is that it can download your blog’s CSS for preview and edit displays. It lets you edit your content inside of the context of that CSS using the WYSIWYG editor, so your content actually looks very close to what you’ll see on your blog while you’re editing your post. Unfortunately Live Writer renders the HTML content in the Web Browser Control’s  default IE 7 rendering mode. Yeah you read that right: IE 7 is the default for the Web Browser control and most applications that use it, are stuck in this modus unless the application explicitly overrides this default. The Web Browser control does not use the version of Internet Explorer installed on the system (IE 10 on my Win8 machine) but uses IE 7 mode for ‘compatibility’ for old applications.If you are importing your blog’s CSS that may suck if you’re using rich HTML 5 and CSS 3 formatting. Hack the Registry to get Live Writer to render using IE 9 or 10In order to get Live Writer (or any other application that uses the Web Browser Control for that matter) to render you can apply a registry hack that overrides the Web Browser Control engine usage for a specific application. I wrote about this in detail in a previous blog post a couple of years back.Here’s how you can set up Windows Live Writer to render your CSS 3 by making a change in your registry:The above is for setup on a 64 bit machine, where I configure Live Writer which is a 32 bit application for using IE 10 rendering. The keys set are as follows:32bit Configuration on 64 bit machine:HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\FeatureControl\FEATURE_BROWSER_EMULATIONKey: WindowsLiveWriter.exeValue: 9000 or 10000  (IE 9 or 10 respectively) (DWORD value)On a 32 bit only machine: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\FeatureControl\FEATURE_BROWSER_EMULATIONKey: WindowsLiveWriter.exeValue: 9000 or 10000  (IE 9 or 10 respectively) (DWORD value)Use decimal values of 9000, 10000 or 11000 to specify specific versions of Internet Explorer. This is a minor tweak, but it’s nice to actually see my blog posts now with the proper CSS formatting intact. Notice the rounded borders and shadow on the code blocks as well as the overflow-x and scrollbars that show up. In this particular case I can see what the code blocks actually look like in a specific resolution – much better than in the old plain view which just chopped things off at the end of the window frame. There are a few other elements that now show properly in the editor as well including block quotes and note boxes that I occasionally use. It’s minor stuff, but it makes the editing experience better yet and closer to the final things so there are less republish operations than I previously had. Sweet!Note that this approach of putting an IE version override into the registry works with most applications that use the Web Browser control. If you are using the Web Browser control in your own applications, it’s a good idea to switch the browser to a more recent version so you can take advantage of HTML 5 and CSS 3 in your browser displayed content by automatically setting this flag in the registry or as part of the application’s startup routine if not dedicated setup tool is used. At the very least you might set it to 9000 (IE 9) which supports most of the basic CSS3 features and is a decent baseline that works for most Windows 7 and 8 machines. If running pre-IE9, the browser will fall back to IE7 rendering and look bad but at least more recent browsers will see an improved experience.I’m surprised that there aren’t more vendors and third party apps using this feature. You can see in my first screen shot that there are only very few entries in the registry key group on my machine – any other apps use the Web Browser control are using IE7. Go figure. • FFmpeg convert video w/ dropped frames, out of sync

  I recorded a video using Bandicam with the MJPEG encoder to get the least amount of lag. Now, I am trying to convert that massive file to a h264 avi using ffmpeg. I know there are dropped frames in the video stream...more than 100 in the first two minutes, which I assume is simply because Bandicam dropped some when it couldn't keep up. So, when I convert the file to h264, the video and audio are out of sync, and appear to be more and more out of sync as output video progresses. Here is my basic command in ffmpeg: ffmpeg -i "C:\...\input.avi" -vcodec libx264 -q 5 -acodec libmp3lame -ar 44100 -ac 2 -b:a 128k "C:\...\output.avi" I have tried EVERYTHING I can think of including: -itsoffset [-]00:00:01 Tried this before and after input file. This doesn't work because as the video progresses it becomes more and more out of sync. -async 1 Doesn't work. -vsync 1 Doesn't work, but it does show dropped frames being duplicated. Two inputs of same file with mapping using -map 0:0 -map 1:1. Doesn't work. The source plays just fine. Any ideas how to convert it with ffmpeg and keep the audio and video synced? Thanks.

  My system has an atom N270 + intel i915 graphic card. Under Windows I can enjoy 720p bigbuckbunny youtube video fullscreen without any trouble. Under Ubuntu 12.04 I have laggy and choppy fullscreen video and choppy video when not fullscreen. I've seen that under ubuntu the cpu is almost always at 100% use. What I must do in order to have videos playing well under ubuntu ? • Proper 16:9 video size for non-HD 4:3 video (for youtube/vimeo)

  Since High Definition video came out on all the online sites it has changed the default aspect ratio of the player from 4:3 to 16:9. This means that for people posting SD video you have to resize some of your videos to get them to fit right. For example, NTSC DVD quality (aka 480i/p) is 720x480 pixels (width x height). However, low-end High Definition (720i/p) is 1280x720. Resolution Chart Anyway, now that the video players are built for HD you will find that uploading standard quality videos will result in videos that are "letter boxed" which means they have extra black bars on the top and bottom (or sides). Correct me if I'm wrong, but in order to get a 720x480 video to fit a box that is designed for HD the best practice would be to crop some of it off so that it fits as 720x404 since: 16/9 = 1.78 (1.7777777777778) 720/405 = 1.78 405x1.78 = 720.9 The same would stand for 640x480 (old TV quality) video that would need to be 640x360 correct? I'm asking because I'm not sure about all this and whether this is the proper way to fix these letter-boxing/display problems.

  When I try to trancode a video with vlc using the MPEG-4 codec and a video bit rate, I get the following error : Either both buffer size and max rate or neither must be specified Here is the command line I used : vlc -vvv myvideo.m2ts --sout-ffmpeg-strict=-2 --sout '#transcode{vcodec=mp4v,vb=2000,acodec=mp4a,ab=96}:standard{access=file,mux=mp4,dst=/path/file.mp4}' It seems that I can't specify a video bit rate with the MPEG-4 codec. (If I remove the vb option, it works). So how can I specify a video bit rate with the MPEG-4 codec ?

  I uploaded my video to youtube and the highest resolution it appears as is 360p. This is much lower than what I uploaded. I believe that youtube isn't making higher resolutions available for my video because of its aspect ratio. The video is 720x400. How can I convert this to a different aspect ratio without losing any of the picture or picture quality? I don't care if blank space appears around the video so long as the picture doesn't get stretched horizontally or vertically.

• How do you get more space on Live Mesh/Live Sync? [closed]

  I'm looking into corporate data backs for my company's dealers. each dealership will have data back up demands ranging from 100mb to 20gb. We are an entirely Microsoft solution so when I was asked to look into back ups, of course I would look to Micro$oft. even if we have too buy this space, is there a way to get more space on Live Mesh/Live Sync (Live Mync hehe)? The 5 gb that Mesh provides or the 2gb that Sync provides isn't enough for our larger dealerships. The 25gb that SkyDrive provides is probably enough for now, but I don't know if it will be in the future. However, SkyDrive is not automatically synced. So it isn't a viable option anyway.

  I'm designing an app for streaming video from a device (e.g. iPhone) via a server to one or more devices and have been researching Apples HTTP Live Streaming protocol. One thing that isn't clear is whether it is possible to stream live video (with audio) to the server and then have it streamed simultaneously in real time to the client devices. From reading the documentation and technical notes from Apple it seems like the index file needs to be created before the segmented video files can be served to a client. Is this right? If so maybe HTTP Live Streaming isn't suitable in this case, what other technologies or software should I consider? Thanks

• 500 MB Avi video from CD lagging/glitching when reproduced

  I created an extra cd with Nero Burning that contains both audio tracks (I can hear them correctly) and a .avi presentation (pretty big one, 540 MB on a 700 MB cd). The audio is fine but the problem is that when the video is played from the cd (with whatever media player: Windows Media Player, VLC, etc..) it lags/glitches/stutters. I'd like the video to be smooth, how should I burn the video to reduce this effect? I mean: what kind of compression/format and why?

  We have to share video across around 4/8 terminals at a public facility where we need to display live video from within the facility, as well as display messages(advertisements), and also play videos(not live) which need to be controlled centrally from another location. We can do central location handling over Internet, over ssh. What we want to do is connect cameras to a computer, and use the computer to display over multiple display units. We need to do live titling if possible. Once the live local telecast which usually takes about an hour or two a day, we would like to play other videos locally off the PC server. Preferably everything should run off Linux, since budgets are very constrained.... Addendum -- Its not over WAN, it's over a local area. I prefer not using LAN, we would rather use co-axial cable if possible. The reason is if it's LAN, I need some kind of an Networking device, at least a thin client

• Skype Video not working 13.04 & 13.10?

  I am trying to fix the issue with the video calls. I can check the video from the option menu, it works fine. But it does not work while calling someone. It shows video disabled. How can i fix this issue? • Video files from another partition or volume does not play

  Some video files from another partition or volume does not display in some video displays but display on another and crashes on others. Seem to play on these video players: vlc smplayer gnome-mplayer Seem to have some issues in these video players: totem -some videos are play while others not banshee -some videos are play while others not bangarang -few videos are play while others not and it crashes and happens also in home folder of filesystem dragon player -crashes and seem not to display any video and happens also in home folder of filesystem Why this happens? Is this a bug? On ubuntu 11.10, every video display play all the video from another partition or from home filesystem.
