  • Cannot get Virtualbox to install properly on Ubuntu 12.04

    I cannot get Virtualbox to install properly on my 12.04. I first went with a manual install for the .deb from the old builds section of the Virtualbox page. That .deb opened up the Software Center and installed. Then I got the error coming up of VT-x/AMD-V hardware acceleration is not available on your system. Your 64-bit guest will fail to detect a 64-bit CPU and will not be able to boot. which I can only assume was due to my Ubuntu version being 32-bit (System Details - Overview - OC type: 32-bit, right?) So I followed these instructions to remove the .deb manually, restarted my laptop, and then FOUND the actual Virtualbox install in the Software Center and installed from that (assuming it would give me the correct version I need for my system) So after all that (and then some), I'm still getting the same error when I connect to my new job's project in Virtualbox. Can anyone point me in the right direction of what to do here? This is the first time I've ever worked with Virtualbox, and no one at this company is using Ubuntu, so I'm on my own here.   • Wireless driver - how to load manufacturer's STA file (Ralink 3290)

    Caution: I'm a newb. Hardware: Giada i35G, cedar trail atom with nvidia gf119, railtek ethernet and Ralink 3290 for wireless. Already accomplished: Installed Ubuntu 12.10, loaded GPU drivers and redirected sound out through GPU card to HDMI. Ethernet works like a charm. Issue: Can't get my wireless up and running. There seems to be no package to which I can simply run a sudo get-aspt install ... I found the corresponding Linux driver from the manufacturer's site, but I have not managed to find out what to with the file. Here's the manufacturers site: http://www.ralinktech.com/en/04_support/support.php?sn=501 I get a file with the following name: \2012_0508_RT3290_Linux_STA_v2.6.0.0.bz2 I hope somebody might be able to tell me what to do next.   • DirectX works for 64-bit but not 32-bit

    I'm trying to play a game (Civilization 5) which was previously working but no longer. I believe I've narrowed it down to a DirectX issue because I get an error running dxdiag.exe in 32 bit mode. My goal (at least I believe) is to get Direct3D Acceleration "Enabled" in dxdiag (as it is in 64 bit dxdiag). A very similar issue is here: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-gaming/direct3d-acceleration-is-not-available-in-windows/4c345e6e-dc68-e011-8dfc-68b599b31bf5?page=1 The proposed answer, which looks very promising, doesn't seem to work for me. Like other users in that thread, HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Direct3D\Drivers does not have a SoftwareOnly key to change. I even tried manually adding it as a string and dword, to no avail. I have a NVIDIA GeForce GT 525M, and before you ask, yes I've tried updating (also uninstalling, reinstalling) my drivers. I've also tried doing the same with DirectX (and Civilization 5 for that matter). Been debugging for some 4+ hours now after a full day of work and I've run out of ideas. I'm hoping somebody knows the solution here! :) Here's what I see when I open dxdiag: DxDiag has detected that there mgiht have been a problem accessing Direct3D the last time this program was used. Would you like to bypass Direct3D this time?     I'm installing Ubuntu 10.10 32-bit version on an HP Envy 15. I get the same problem these people have here: "unable to find a medium containing a live file system" error when installing but the question was never resolved. I spent so long researching and got so frustrated that I took my computer down to a shop and asked them to install it for me. It took them a while but they managed to get it installed. The reason for this error they had said was because Ubuntu didn't have the USB 3.0 drivers it needed to install properly. I'm reinstalling Ubuntu yet again and I've run into the same issue so my question is: does anyone know.. a) Where to get these USB 3.0 drivers? b) How to get them installed when installing the Ubuntu OS?   • Ventrilo sound delay issue in Windows 7

    I've upgraded my machine to Windows 7 Professional (x64) (using format + clean install, not upgrade install). Everything seems to work fine except for Ventrilo. I used to have Vista Business x64 and Ventrilo worked fine there, on the same machine. The issue I am having is that when I am playing a game and using Ventrilo, everything works fine at first, but after a few minutes, I stop hearing anything that people say. If I minimize, I can see the speaker icons lighting up (meaning that people are talking), but I still can't hear anything. The sounds from the game and other OS sounds still play through the speakers just fine. Eventually, I will close ventrilo and then after a few seconds I will start hearing things that people were saying several minutes ago. I start hearing everything that was said, with no "silent time" in between. Note that the sounds keep playing even AFTER the ventrilo process is dead. I've tried using Ventrilo x64 and x86 versions. Does anyone have any advice on how to fix this problem?

I have been googling around for a bit and all posts say to decrease heap size and increase stack size but that doesnt seem to help. Anyone have anymore ideas?   • XP Client for NFS failure dialog on startup, but drive mapping works

    I'm mounting an NFS share to some windows machines using the tools that come in the Services for UNIX Administration toolkit. I've set up the User Name Mapping service to use local passwd and group files. I had to manually start the User Name Mapping service, and then created an 'advanced map' from the XP machine's user to a uid that exists in on my NFS server, like so: Windows User: Matt Bennett UNIX Domain: PCNFS UNIX User: mattbennett UID: 10250 Primary: * I can map a network drive without any issues, and it correctly identifies the UID and GID to use, but when I reboot I get this message: "An error occurred while connecting to the NFS server. Make sure that the Client for NFS service has started. If the problem persists make sure Client for NFS service can communicate with User Name Mapping or PCNFS server." After dismissing the dialog, the machine finishes booting and the network drive is there in My Computer with the title "Disconnected Network Drive", but I can open it I can see the network share without a problem, and then it drops the 'disconnected' from its title. It seems like the services are starting in the wrong order or something, so the first attempt to connect fails but subsequent ones work as expected. There don't seem to be any symptoms apart from the dialog box, but obviously something's not quite right. What have I done wrong? Thanks, Matt.

    After I turn on my machine, the first couple of Time Machine backups seem to go OK, but after about an hour I get this error: Unable to complete backup.     I've currently got a situation in my PC where I have 3 devices that connect to the motherboard via the onboard USB pinouts. The problem is, I only have two sets of USB pinouts on my motherboard. Is there any way of connecting two devices to one set of pinouts? Essentially, I'm looking for the functionality of a USB hub, but I'd like it to be inside the case, and provide pinouts rather than regular USB ports. Update: I don't need any more USB ports, I have devices that use the USB pinouts. I already have extra USB ports that aren't used, so adding an PCI USB card doesn't really help anything.

    I've been using Komodo Edit to work on a Django project. It works great except for one little annoyance: When I am editing Django template files, Komodo likes to put red squiggly lines underneath the first HTML tag that follows a Django tag, because it thinks it is an invalid HTML doc (although it isn't, it just has Django template tags/filters in it). Note that this red squiggly line is called a "Linter error" in the docs that I can find. Is there some way to turn off this red squiggly for only a specific type of language? It's nice to have when working on Python code but it's annoying to have a red squiggly on every single one of my Django templates.

    I can't for the life of me figure this out. I recently had TWC installed in my house, and wanted to disable the NAT and router functions of it. I have a Time Machine hooked up to it from LAN1 (on the Ubee) to the WAN port on the TM. The problems started occurring here. I figured the settings would be these: Ubee Configuration mode: Bridge DHCP: Off TM IPv4: 192.168.100.2 Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0 Router Address: 192.168.100.1 DNS Servers: 8.8.8.8, 8.8.4.4 Router Mode: DHCP and NAT But using those settings, my TM says "Double NAT", so I have to change it all around to the default settings of the Ubee using NAT. This leads me to believe bridge mode doesn't actually turn off NAT...

    I have had TM 1.X since a long time ago, but a week ago I updated my system to Mountain Lion 10.8.2 and installed TM2. The problem is that I write with LaTeX, and sometimes I use gnuplot for the graphs (I installed gnuplot with macports). But now it doesn't work because the --shell-escape doesn't work, this is the error message I get: Package pgfplots Error: Sorry, the gnuplot-result file '"untitled 2.pgf-plot.table"' could not be found. Maybe you need to enable the shell-escape feature? For pdflatex, this is ' pdflatex -shell-escape'. You can also invoke ' gnuplot .gnuplot' manually on the respective gnuplot file.. And then, looking around I discovered that it's not just gnuplot but everything which needs --shell-escape. Question What happened? How can I get TM have the correct rights so this works? It worked right in Snow Leopard with TM 1.5.

  • Craftsmanship Tour Day 1: Didit Long Island

    On Monday I was at Didit for my first ever craftsmanship visit. Didit seem to occupy a good part of a non-descript building in Rockville Centre Long Island. Since I had arrived early from Seattle I had some time to kill, so I stopped at the Rockville Diner on the corner of N Park Ave and Sunrise Hwy. I thoroughly enjoyed the pancakes and the friendly service. After walking to the Didit office I met Rik Dryfoos, the Didit Engineering Manager who organised my visit, and got the introduction to Didit and the work they are doing. I spent the morning in the room shared by the Didit developers, who are working on some fascinating deep engineering problems. After lunch at a local Thai place I setup a webcam to record an interview with Rik and Matt Roman (Didit VP of Engineering). I had a lot of trouble with the webcam, including losing several minutes of conversation, but in the end I was very happy the result.   • Java issues on OpenVZ Ubuntu 11.04 (.jar/.sh files)

    I've had a whole line of messes with java and .jar files. I've tried both OpenJDK (from software installer) and about three repositories for Sun. /Desktop# java -jar -Xmx1024m ss.jar Exception in thread "main" java.awt.HeadlessException at java.awt.GraphicsEnvironment.checkHeadless(GraphicsEnvironment.java:173) at java.awt.Window.<init>(Window.java:476) at java.awt.Frame.<init>(Frame.java:419) at java.awt.Frame.<init>(Frame.java:384) at javax.swing.JFrame.<init>(JFrame.java:174) at org.powerbot.bd.<init>(Unknown Source) at org.powerbot.Boot.main(Unknown Source) Two separate errors: ~/Desktop# ./ss.sh [SEVERE] org.server.Boot: Default heap size of 490m too small, restarting with 768m and about 30 different crashes were it just "aborts" with a huge file dump. Each time I've tried something a little different, whether it be updating Java or just changing -Xmx1024 to -Xmx1024m to get rid of the heap. Personally I think it has something to do with OpenVZ, but Google hasn't saved me this time, I need someone who can get to the bottom of my problem. java -version java version "1.6.0_26" Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_26-b03) Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 20.1-b02, mixed mode) is my current install.   • Stackify Gives Devs a Crack at the Production Server

Why hasn’t anyone thought of that before?” Matt Watson, CEO of Kansas City, Mo.-based startup Stackify, was telling me that the 10-person company is getting ready to launch its product in August (it’s in beta now) that will give developers an app-centric look into production servers so they can support and troubleshoot apps and fix bugs. Of course, this hasn’t happened in the past because of the security concerns of IT administrators, and a decided lack of expertise on the part of developers. Stackify installs on a server and acts like a proxy for developers, collecting data about the environment, discovering all the applications, scanning for config file changes, and doing server monitoring. “We become the central point that developers can see everything they need to know about their applications,” he said. “Developers can look at the files that are deployed, and query databases in a safe way.”  In his words:“The big thing we’re hoping is just giving them (developers) visibility. Most companies want to hire the junior developers that they pay $50,000 a year right out of college to do application support and troubleshooting and fix bugs, but those people don’t have access to production servers to troubleshoot. It becomes very difficult for them to do their job, so they end up spending all of their day bugging the senior developers, the managers or the system administrators to track down this stuff, which creates a huge bottleneck. And so what we can do is give that visibility to those lower-level people so that they can do this work and free up the higher-level people so they can be working on the next big thing.”Stackify itself might just prove to be the next big thing.

    So I have NetworkManager, connected to an AP on wlan1. I have wlan0 connected to a AdHoc network. I have Firestarter sharing my inet on the Adhoc.   • ATI Radeon HD 6870 Driver fails to install default-policy.sh does not support version

    I'm running Ubuntu 11.04 Beta, with everything updated completely. I'm using Ubuntu Classic, because Unity fails to run, supposedly because of my video card. The drivers for the Radeon HD 6870 series is apparently lacking, but I found a post stating the newest version has full support for Ubuntu Natty Narwhal. That post is slightly old, so i grabbed 11.3 for Ubuntu x86 off the ATI website. When I run the installation program, I receive the following error: > ./ati-driver-installer-11-3-x86.x86_64.run Created directory fglrx-install.uREFoO Verifying archive integrity... All good.
