  • Install MatroskaProp on Windows 7 x64

    To see more information in Windows Explorer property pages and menus about Matroska Video (.mkv) files, similar to what one can see when selecting native Windows media (.avi, .asf, .wmv or even just plain old mpg) files, Matroska links (from http://www.matroska.org/downloads/windows.html) to a download of the MatroskaProp shell extension (http://www.jory.info/serendipity/archives/14-MatroskaProp-2.8-Released.html). It used to work for me under Windows XP 32-bit. Now I have Windows 7 x64, and downloaded, installed and ran it. Configuration and settings page is fine. But it does not seem to actually register any shell extension. Nothing is added to Explorer windows, menus or property pages when selecting .mkv or .mks files). I tried calling the register hook manually using regsvr32.dll, that again invoked the configuration window and let me set all options, and when confirming even said the registration succeeded, but seems to have had no effect. In the registry I cannot find any traces of the shell extension being installed. Can this extension be made to work under Windows 7 or x64 systems? Are there known problems with installing this or other old shell extensions on x64, or on Windows 7?

  • Cut (smart edit) .mts (AVCHD Progressive) files un Ubuntu Lucid

    I have a bunch of .mts files containing AVCHD Progressive video recorded by a Panasonic camera, and I need software on Ubuntu Lucid with which I can remove the boring parts, and concatenate the interesting parts, all this without reencoding the video stream. It's OK for me to cut at keyframe boundary. If Avidemux was able to open the files, it would take about 60 hours of work for me to cut the files. (At least that was it last time I tried with similar videos, but of a file format supported by Avidemux.) So I need a fast, powerful and stable video editor, because I don't want that 60 hours of work go up to 240 or even 480 hours just because the tool is too slow or unstable or has a terrible UI. I've tried Avidemux 2.5.5 and 2.5.6, but they crash trying to open such a file, even if I convert the file to .avi first using mencoder -oac copy -ovc copy. mplayer can play the files. I've tried Avidemux 2.6.0, which can open the file, but it cannot jump to the previous or next keyframe etc. (if I make it jump to the next keyframe, and then to the previous keyframe, it doesn't end up at the original keyframe, sometimes displays an error etc.). Also I'm not sure if Avidemux 2.6.x would let me save the result without reencoding. I've tried Kdenlive 0.7.7.1, but playback is very choppy, and it cannot play audio at all (complaining that SDL cannot find the device; but many other programs on the system can play audio). It would be a pain to work with. I've tried converting the .mts file to .mkv using ffmpeg -i input.mts -vcodec copy -sameq -acodec copy -f matroska output.mkv, but that caused too much visible distortions in the video in both mplayer and Avidemux. I've tried converting the .mts file with TsRemux.exe, but Avidemux 2.5.x still can't open that file. Is there another program to cut and concatenate the files? Is there a preprocessor which would create a file (without reencoding the video) on which Avidemux wouldn't crash?

It also happens with GTK RecordMyDesktop if I enable the encode on the fly. So, the questions is how to get a normal video pace.     I encoded some videos from a dvd format (mpeg 2 I think) to h246 (using a .mkv container). When I upload them to youtube, most of them work, but there are a few that don't. After I upload it, I get the message "Failed (unable to convert video file)" What could be the problem because all the videos are the same format, and only a few of them fail.     I downloaded some mkv/mp4 files with my new router (I can download directly from it, using transmission), and all of them seem to be corrupted: lags, strange artifacts when using vlc, crashes with mp4, etc. When a downloaded part is corrupted, transmission warns you and downloads that part again. My question is: even after the transmission verification, is it possible that the downloaded file is still corrupt?

  • Can Linux play HDMI 1.4a 3D stereoscopic content?

    I'm aware that there are no Bluray players for Linux but I'm wondering if it's possible to play Full 3D HD (1080p, Side-By-Side) MKV files (or Bluray BDMV folders, etc). Full 3D HD files are actually two 1080p frames "side-by-side" so the effective resolution is 3840x1200. In order to play these properly the software needs to switch to TV into 3D mode (or however HDMI 1.4a works). I don't think simply playing the 3840x1200 resolution file will work so are there any options out there?

    I very often use subtitles on my mkv player to watch movies. I have frequently observed that there is sometime a lag between the subtitles and the actual video. Even after setting the subtitle offset one would have to go on increasing it as the movie proceeds. This is something i find extremely annoying and would like to know if there is any way when one can check if a subtitle file is the ideal one for a given video.

    I'm using the Ubuntu 10.10 with both VLC player and MPlayer and already installed the ATI drivers. I watched the same videos on Windows 7 and Ubuntu. But on Ubuntu the images have a lot of tearing. I tried some newbish-configs on my ATI config tool, but nothing changed. I tried videos in mkv, avi, rmvb... and in all kinds of resolutions. I would love to see some tips or maybe a solution to this problem. (I have searched for similar questions but I didn't find any :/ ) The english is not my primary lang so sorry for my mistakes.     I've been searching for a way to play Blu-ray using VLC on Ubuntu 12.04 64bit and all of them tell me that I've to somehow rip the disk into .mkv format then play it. But today, I found a page with directions on how to play Blu-rays directly on VLC. I've already finished downloading and pasting the files it told me to do, But it didn't work for me.     I'm using the script below to run FFmpeg on Ubuntu 10.10. I followed these instructions to install FFmpeg & x264. While ffmpeg does capture the screen it does not capture the mic audio. I've checked that the mic works via "System Preferences". Anyone have any ideas on what the problem(s) could be and suggestions on how to resolve this issue?     I recently purchased the D34010WYKH NUC and I figured this would be a great time to make the jump to a Linux based system. I'm running Ubuntu 14.04, and I'm having an issue with video rendering that is driving me mad. Essentially videos (all 1080p mkv files) appear to be slowly blurring, and its most noticeable when the camera remains on a scene for a long period of time. Then all of a sudden the video will correct the blur and the image will be sharp, only to begin happening again followed by more sudden and noticeable corrections. I have seen the exact same issue in both VLC and XBMC and across several different videos. I have installed the latest Intel graphics drivers, and searched the web but to be honest I'm not sure how to accurately describe this problem. I'm also quite new to the OS, so my experience tinkering is limited. Has anyone experienced this type of issue before? Can it be resolved?

  • Choppy video in vlc even with hardware acceleration on ATI Radeon HD

    After installing Catalyst 11.12 and studying instructions (1, 2) to enable hardware acceleration I ended up with the following command: sudo apt-get install xvba-va-driver libva-glx1 vainfo && \ vainfo && \ vlc --verbose 2 --ffmpeg-hw video.1080p.x264.mkv The output confirms that it's using the VA API: avcodec decoder: Using VA API version 0.32 for hardware decoding. But even after a reboot the video still looks choppy. There's no vlc output to indicate that the codec is having trouble, or that it's skipping frames. Any idea what could be the problem? Using vlc 1.1.12 with default settings. Also tried (in sequence): sudo apt-get install libva-glx1 sudo apt-get install --reinstall libgl1-mesa-glx:i386 libgl1-mesa-glx:amd64 libgl1-mesa-dri:i386 libgl1-mesa-dri:amd64 xserver-xorg-core Rebooting No luck yet.     when i try adding this movie file to pitivie i get the error as follows (i can play the file in mplayer just fine tho): Problem: An internal error occurred while analyzing this file: Could not find GStreamer caps mapping for FFmpeg codec 'h264', and you are using an external libavcodec. This is most likely due to a packaging problem and/or libavcodec having been upgraded to a version that is not compatible with this version of gstreamer-ffmpeg.     My audio has always worked perfectly on this hardware and 12.04. Yesterday I received an update, including a kernel update. Today the sound is periodically stuffed. In youtube, mkv files via VLC and embedded audio in web pages (memrise.com) the sound can become stuttery, sped up or stopped mid play-back. Where can I go to find if this is a known problem, or report it if it is not? Also, can I find a log that will tell me what packages were updated on my machine yesterday?

Let's say I have a foo.mkv file. Thumbnail previews work in both Windows 7 and Ubuntu. When I change the filename to anything random like foo.bar or when I remove the extension itself (making it just foo), Nautilus shows thumbnails normally like if it can recognize what type of files they are - without looking at file extension. This however, doesn't happen in Windows 7. Windows starts asking me things like which application I want to use to open that file as soon as I remove file extension (forget thumbnails...) etc. So, How does this thumbnail preview work in Windows 7 and Ubuntu? What makes Ubuntu recognize files "out of the box" unlike Windows 7?

  • Videos stutter in full screen

    Using Ubuntu 12.04 with Gnome 3.4.2. When I load video files (avi, mkv, mp4), they play smoothly in windowed mode, but when in full screen, they mildly (but noticeably) stutter. I've tried various players (from VLC to SMplayer2), with many different output drivers and it's always the same. Also, my video card is AMD Radeon HD 6450, and I've had no luck with the proprietary FGLRX drivers. Every time I install them, my system becomes very sluggish (window dragging animations become choppy etc.). Thanks in advance, guys.
