• ubuntu booting problem with 12-04

  i installed ubuntu through USB .. instillation was proper. but when i restarted my laptop it dint boot. so planed install it again when started selected install from USB. it booted ma previous installed ubuntu.. so after wen ubuntu boots no need of that pen drive.. so in short .. eveny time i want to start my pc i need that pendrive to boot .. so please help me out this. • Safely dual-boot XP and Ubuntu 12.04 Desktop?

  My netbook Acer AOD255 has three primary partitions in it by default - PQSERVICE/recovery (NTFS), Android x86 1.6 (FAT32), and the main WinXP Home SP3 (pre-installed, dual-booted with Android from inside WinXP). I was able to resize all three partitions to give 9GB of unallocated space for a future Ubuntu installation, which can already be booted from a pendrive. Here's my problems: 1.) I don't know how to install Ubuntu on that 9GB space (even if I create an unformatted partition for it) 2.) I currently have no means of reinstalling my XP, or backing-up any data (so I don't want to accidentally wipe out my whole HDD at all) 3.) I want XP and Ubuntu to be dual-booted thru a boot manager like GRUB or something more practical (but google searches confuse me) 4.) When I boot to try Ubuntu, GParted displays my whole drive as unallocated space. It also says "can't have overlapping partitions" or something.

• Which office suite is the ideal alternative to MSOffice?

  Let's say I want to drop MSOffice permanently and switch to a free alternative, not having the need of opening the documents on other PC's except my own (I can also carry a portable version on a pendrive and edit the docs anywhere). I know 3 free office suites - LibreOffice, Abiword and Calligra. Which one of these is the most complete and provides the best features to be a viable alternative to MSOffice, without compromising the quality of the work I can produce on Office apps? Notice that I'm not focusing the question on compatibility between MSOffice and other suites but instead I am comparing their quality, taking in comparison MSOffice.

• Install vim offline

  I have Ubuntu 12.04.02 desktop in my college Lab of around 15 pcs with no internet connection. I used to install packages : sudo apt-get install vim It was just fine. But, now I want to install vim locally(i.e.,using a pendrive or CD drive). Where and how can I accomplish this,as I am new to it.   I’ve started using rsnapshot as my backup system for home PC. I really like the idea of hard links and how they are handled. But can’t find best workflow. Currently I keep my snapshots on the same partition and let’s say, copy newest one to a pendrive at the end of the week. Cloud storage is what I’m looking for. As of rsnapshot, Dropbox doesn’t fit my needs. More over there is no way to make it respect hard links — all snapshots are treated as a full snapshot. Renting a server is pretty expensive so my question is, are there better alternatives for backup in the cloud? I would like to benefit from hard links and send only incremental backups, just like in my local host.

• The system is running in low graphics mode error before ubuntu gets installed

  I am using Bootable USB for installing Ubuntu with Windows 8.1. I have put pendrive and then booting my USB. When it shows me to try Ubuntu or install Ubuntu. Then I press Try ubuntu and then it says" "The system is running in low graphics mode". Then I press Ok. Then it shows 4 options. Then again I click Ok. Then it shows a black screen and nothing happens. I have tried all possible answers provided in AU. What should I do? Please help. I am using Windows 8.1 with dedicated graphic card (Video card - AMD Radeon HD 8670M). Installing 12.04 LTS with pre-installe Windows 8.1 in a Dell Laptop 3537 inspiron.

• When trying running Ubuntu 12.10 off a usb drive, I encounter an error while prevent me from doing anything else

  The details are that I used Universal USB Installer version 1.9.1.8 from pendrivelinux.com to install ubuntu 12.10 onto a 4gb pendrive as per instruction on Ubuntu's website. However, after I boot with drive I am met with the following message: "The system is running in low-graphics mode. Your screen, graphics card, and input device settings could not be detected correctly. You will need to configure these yourself." Pressing Ctrl Alt F1 doesn't allow me access and the options on the dialog box either send me through a loop returning me to the previous dialog or just leave me dead in the water. Pressing Ctrl Alt Del does however restart the computer if I am dead in the water, so ubuntu isn't COMPLETELY unresponsive... I feel I should mention that I'm trying to run this distribution on my netbook. I can't install it directly to the harddrive since I need my current Windows distribution for certain programs that don't quite agree with WINE yet.

I just want to install ubuntu because it is suppose to get rid of most of the virus problems, so anyway I was following online instructions to install ubuntu alongside windows 7 these are my laptop specifications. I tried booting with a pendrive using netbootin and other similar program but once I boot the laptop in ubuntu I click try without installing button and go to desktop then my mouse stops working.   I am trying install Linux on my computer (tried Ubuntu 10.4 and Linux Mint 9). I started the installation wizard and on the hard disk selection page the hard disk is not displayed. I have a 500GB disk with 5 partitions and windows 7 ultimate in one partition. If I click the forward button, it shows an error- "No root file system defined". I have tried to install by booting from CD and pendrive but both shows the same error. When I load Linux as live CD it doesn't show the hard disk. My hard disk works fine in windows 7. System config: intel i3 2100, 500GB hdd, 2GB ram

• "Show hidden files" option is not working

  OK, I know this is the very basic thing that goes with Windows, but I am asking it here in search of answer. I put my pendrive and it autoruns. This changed the show hidden files option off, I mean I am not able to see my hidden files as it is not applying the changes. What is the registry file that has modified? I have scanned my computer using 4 antivirus programs. BitDefender found and deleted something in temperary folder. The rest didn't showed anything. I have encountered this problem a few more times but this time I don't want to format it ;-)

I cannot dualboot it with windows until my friend (who is a genius at computers) backs up my windows (apparently). • Computer bluescreen-ing with 0x7A and 0xF4 errors

  Hiya, This computer is locking up for around 5-30 seconds before throwing Blue Screen of Death's with 0x7A and occasionally 0xF4 errors. The log files don't really show anything informative, and Windows Update doesn't show any new drivers for the HDD. Upon restart, it shows a "A disk error has occurred /n Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to continue", and to fix this I go into WinRE via the pendrive and run "bootsect /nt60 C: /force /mbr" and that seems to fix it so it boots. And then the cycle repeats. If you want any more information please ask. Thanks, Luke Carpenter

• Booting Linux from External HDD, with persistence

  I am trying to install Linux, specifically Lubuntu or BackTrack 5 on an external HDD (Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex) but I have had no luck using YUMI, or Untebootin to get it working. I want the hard drive to be able to save the data within Linux (As in, If I install a program, it will stay there). I also tried doing this with a flash drive, which does boot, but it does not save data (I tried following Pendrive's tutorial on creating a casper-rw file and adding "persistent" to various files, but I cannot get it to save files. Basically, I just want a form of linux on a portable device that will save files and settings between boots Note: I do not have a CD to install from. Any help would be greatly appreciated, Thanks!

• Ubuntu karmic 9.10 Live image on USB - not working.

  This is my configuration 4GB pendrive, HP ubuntu-9.10-desktop-i386 image file for live USB install pendrivelinux (u910p) and ubetbootin (unetbootin.sourceforge.net) machine T61 Earlier I have installed ubuntu live image using above two mentioned utilities, numerous times. But, on a 2gb kingston flash-drive. Today, i am trying to install the live-image on 4gb HP flash-drive. Both the utilities install, i can see the files in the drive, even the wubi-installer is working, it say press "reboot" to boot in live-ubuntu. But, when i press "reboot" it does not reboot my win7. Now, when i reboot, select boot-usb in bios, it say "no boot record". I am making my usb bootable, using the utility, even then nothing is working out. Did this a few times. Is 4GB usb a prob, does anyone knows how to partition my usb in 2-2gb and install it on one partition, and then use the live image. Is it possible.

  I am a new user of Ubuntu. When I type df -h in terminal , it gives me list of all storage devices and space usage. In my system I get this. My question is what are the other folders and what is the physical location of these folders if complete memory is taken by the device dev/sda?

• Is possible to load Windows 7 from the eSATA drive, even if it's not supported in BIOS?

  I'm using a laptop which has eSATA connection. I would like to install Windows 7 on the external disk (to have it completely separated from the OS on the internal hdd). According to the manufacturer, booting from eSATA drive won't be possible. I've checked the BIOS settings and it appears to be correct - eSATA is not even listed in the boot sequence. I'm wondering if there can be any workaround to that limitation, for example starting a custom bootloader on the USB pendrive, just to boot Windows 7 on the eSATA drive.

• Windows + Jolicloud crash!

  My girlfriend's Acer Aspire One netbook just crashed running Windows XP. It crashes at the boot process, displays the blue screen for a second and then reboots. I also installed Jolicloud through Jolicloud Express but I am not able to boot it either. I suspect it's a virus... When running a Ubuntu live session from a pendrive it seems like the Acer partition is corrupted. In a partition program it says to run chkdsk in Windows to fix it. I have used Ubuntu for a while but I am not an expert so I wanted to ask: How do I restore my NTFS damaged partition?

• All items in my pen drive had been renamed automatically and cannot open it

  All the items (both files and folders) inside my pen drive had been renamed to some characters like :]h.¡?.A++ and when I try to open any folder Windows gives this message. The filename,directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect I was told that it is a problem of the pen drive, not a virus. They say if I format the pendrive then I will be able to use it again normally. But I'm not sure. And I need those files. Does anybody knows a solution?

  Does Microsoft Office use any marks/keys in saved files, that can track the computer and software license using which file was saved? E.g.: I use Office at work and save files on pendrive. When I'm home I recall to check something and introduce little modifications. I'd save this file using MS Office Home and Student license, but at work I will be redistributing this file and it should look as it was saved at work, with company's license (not my private). Will saving it at work once again wipe license marks from home (if any exist)?
