  • Algorithm to distribute objects in a box (like InDesign, Illustrator, Draw!)

    I have a set of rectangles with their corresponding positions and a big rectangle which serves as the 'bounding box' for these rectangles. I would like to know of an algorithm that would 'distribute the free space' evenly among the rectangles. Some of you may be familiar with the Distribute Spacing option in Adobe InDesign and similar layout-oriented apps. That would be what I'm looking for. I did try looking it up, but I'm not familiar with 'graphical' algorithms terminology and trying only terms relating to 'distribute' mainly yields results about Distributed Computing. So, even the names of the algorithms or better terms to look up would be a big help. Finally, the algorithm doesn't need to be rigorously the same as InDesign's one: pretty much any algorithm that 'distributes' objects inside a region will work fine. In fact, since I'm striving for visual appeal mainly, the more suggestions the better. =D

I wanna turn my URLs from www.example.com/book.php?book=title into something like this, if it is possible of course: www.example.com/book/title Notice that the title of the books are unique and cannot be repeated.   • Setting Back Button Tittle in Navigation Controller problem

    Hi, I'm trying to change Back Button tittle in a navigation controller in the following way: In the parent controller I put this in vieDidLoad: self.title = @"Calendars"; self.navigationItem.backBarButtonItem.title = @"Previous"; But this controller is in the stack since I initialized the app: -(void)applicationDidFinishLaunching:(UIApplication *)application{ navController.viewControllers= [NSArray arrayWithObjects:aController,aBcontroller,nil]; [window addSubview:navController.view]; } So, the viewDidLoad in aController is not called until I select the back buttom the first time in the bController... Does anyone knows how to call viewDidLoad just when I push it into the stack? Or do you know another way to change the BackButtom title? Thanks in advanced for your help.

In order to do this, I configured the following Appender in log4j's xml configuration: <appender name="DB" class="org.apache.log4j.jdbc.JDBCAppender"> <param name="URL" value="jdbc:postgresql://localhost/logging_test" /> <param name="user" value="test_user" /> <param name="password" value="test_password" /> <param name="sql" value="INSERT INTO log_messages ( log_level, message, log_date ) VALUES ( '%p', '%m', '%d{yyyy-MM-dd HH:mm:ss}' )" /> </appender> This works fine, except some of the messages contain ', and then the appender fails. Is there an easy way to do this?

    I'm using Intercom rails in my application and I would like to not include intercom script in a certain situation. So, I would like to skip the intercom after_filter when a value is set in the user session.   • How to write an intersects for Shapes in android

    I have an written an Object called Shape which has a Point representing the topLeftCorner and a Dimension with represents its width and height. To get the topRightCorner I can simply add the width to the topLeftPoint.x. I use to rotate them on a certain degree around their center. The problem after the rotation is, that my intersects(Shape) method fails, because it does not honor the rotation of the Shapes. The rotation will be the same for each Shape. My current implementation looks like this inside my Shape Object: public boolean intersects(Shape s){ // functions returning a Point of shape s return intersects(s.topLeft()) || intersects(s.topRight()) || intersects(s.bottomLeft()) || intersects(s.bottomRight()) || intersects(s.leftCenter()) || intersects(s.rightCenter()) || intersects(s.center()); } public boolean intersects(Point p){ return p.x >= leftX() && p.x <= rightX() && p.y >= topY() && p.y <= bottomY(); } Basically I need functions like rotatedLeftX() or rotatedTopRight() to work properly. Also for that calculation I think it doesn't matter when the topLeft point before a rotation of ie 90 will turn into topRight... I already read this and this Question here, but do not understand it fully.

Using imagejpeg (quality of 80) instead of imagepng it's about 4kB. How can this be, especially at the lowest quality setting for imagepng? I tried using imagecopy instead of imagecopyresampled, and imagecreate instead of the true color version. Unfortunately the images come out mangled somehow. Is there any way to get PNG thumbnails of a reasonably small file size (about 4 kB at 140 x 140)? Or do I have to use JPEG?

    Given an instance of IDirect3DDevice9, what approaches are available to put it in its original render state (i.e. the state it was in when the device was initially created)? The cleanest way that I've come across is to create a state block via IDirect3DDevice9::CreateStateBlock just after the device has been created so that it can be applied later. Unfortunately, I'm operating under the constraints of an existing project such that I can't modify the device creation code; by the time my component gets the device, its default state has been modified.   • What is the best way to do scoped finds based on access control rules in Rails?

    Hi I need to find an elegant solution to scoped finds based on access control rules. Essentially I have the following setup: Users Customers AccessControl - Defines which user has access to another users data Users need to be able to access not just their own customers but also shared customers of other users. Obviously something like a simple association will not work: has_many :customers and neither will this: has_many :customers, :conditions => 'user_id in (1,2,3,4,5)' because the association uses with_scope and the added condition is an AND condition not an OR condition. I also tried overriding the find and method_missing methods with the association extension like this: has_many :customers do def find(*args) #get the user_id and retrieve access conditions based on the id #do a find based on the access conditions and passed args end def method_missing(*args) #get the user_id and retrieve access conditions based on the id #do a find based on the access conditions and passed args end end but the issue is that I don't have access to the user object / parent object inside the extension methods and it just does not work as planned. I also tried default_scope but as posted here before you can't pass a block to a default scope. Anyhow, I know that data segmentation and data access controls have been done before using rails and am wondering if somebody found an elegant way to do it. UPDATE: The AccessControl table has the following layout user_id shared_user_id The customer table has this structure: id account_id user_id first_name last_name Assuming the the following data would be in the AccessControl table: 1 1 1 3 1 4 2 2 2 13 and so on... And the account_id for user 1 is 13 I need to be able to retrieve customers that can be best described with the following sql statement: select * from customers where (account_id = 13 and user_id = null) or (user_id in (1,3,4))

  • Alternatives to Java bytecode instrumentation

    I'm starting a project that will have to instrument java applications for coverage purposes (definition-usage of variables, etc). It has to add trace statements and some logic to the application and maybe remove statements. I have searched for ways of instrument Java code and what I always find is about bytecode instrumentation. My question is: It's the only way to instrument Java applications? There is any other way to do that? What are the advantages of bytecode instrumentation over the others? I'll probably use the bytecode solution, but I want to know what are the problems with the other approaches (if any) to decide precisely. Thanks!

I am trying to connect to the a database resource I have in my context.xml file.In gwt 1.5 I had set up root.xml in tomcat-conf-gwt-localhost. I have no idea where to set up the resource in GWT 2.0. I tried placing my context.xml file in war-META-INF with no luck. Anyone have an idea where to place the context.xml file to be able to use a jndi database resource in GWT 2.0? Thanks in advanced

  • Choosing an Open Source Application Server for J2EE

    Hello, I know this may be a recurring topic, but I have read a lot of articles and I still have doubts. Also, I would like to hear more recent opinions about this. The main requirements of my application server are: flexible configuration, support for a extremely high number of concurrent users. It will be a system for the mobile communications industry, so it must have high availability as well. I am going to develop a J2EE application and Open Source Applications Servers are my only option. I have use GlassFish for a very small project and I really liked it.     When a Southern “boy” like me sees somebody that used to be, or should be, a close friend or relative that they haven’t seen in a long time, that’s a typical greeting.  Come to think of it, we were often related to close friends. So “back in the day”, we not only knew people but everybody close to them.  When I started driving, my Dad told me to always drive carefully in Polk county.  He said if I ran into anybody there, it was likely they would be related or close family friends. Not so much any more… the cities have gotten bigger and more people come south and stay.  One of the curses of air conditioning I guess. Anyway, it’s been a while.  So “How’s your Momma and them”?  Have you been waiting for me to blog again?  Too bad, I’m back anyway <smile>. Here in Charlotte we just had another great code camp.  The Enterprise Developers Guild is going strong, thanks to the help of a lot of dedicated people.  Mark Wilson, Brian Gough, Syl Walker, Ghayth Hilal, Alberto Botero, Dan Thyer, Jean Doiron, Matt Duffield all come to mind.  Plus all the regulars who volunteer for every special event we have. Brian Gough put on a successful SharePoint Saturday.  Rafael Salas and our friends at the local Pass SQL group had a great SQL Saturday.  Brian Hitney and Glen Gordon keep on doing their usual great job for developers in the southeast as our local Microsoft reps. Since my last post, I have the honor of being designated the INetA Membership Mentor for Georgia in addition to mentoring the groups in the Carolinas for the past several years.  Georgia could be a really good thing since my wife likes shopping in Atlanta, not to mention how much we both like Georgia in general.  As I recall, my Momma had people in Georgia.  Wonder how their “Mommas an’ them” are doing?   Bill J

    I am trying to install Absinthe 2.0.4 on Ubuntu 11.10 on a netbook. When I try to run the install file, this keeps on happening: rafael@RafLaptop:~/Desktop/absinthe-linux-2.0.4$ ./absinthe.x86 ./absinthe.x86: /lib/i386-linux-gnu/libc.so.6: version `GLIBC_2.15' not found (required by ./absinthe.x86) Do I need to upgrade GLIBC? If so, how do I do that? Since I'm on a netbook I can't use a LiveCD so I wanted to know if there was a way I could fix this issue without reinstalling my whole OS. Any explanations about what GLIBC is exactly would be great too since this is a learning experience for me. I know that GLIBC is a part of libc.so.6 and so I tried to run sudo apt-get install libc.so.6 but was told that it was up to date. But GLIBC isn't? I hope this articulates my problem well, if there are any pieces of missing info or questions to clarity my question, please let me know! ~-~ EDIT/UPDATE: So after some help on the AskUbuntu chat room from user izx, I have gathered the following information/understanding: -I need to run this program with Ubuntu 12.04 or recompile it from source -Upgrading libc on Oneiric to 2.15 while possible, is not an easy task and is not officially supported.
